9 best food pickled ginger
Food pickled ginger, often referred to as pickled sushi ginger or gari, is a popular condiment and ingredient in Asian cuisine, particularly Japanese and Chinese dishes. It is commonly used to accompany sushi and sashimi, but it has a range of culinary applications. Here's what you need to know about pickled ginger:
Ingredients: Pickled ginger is made from young ginger roots. The ginger is typically sliced thinly into small, translucent pieces.
Flavor: Pickled ginger has a sweet and slightly tangy flavor with a hint of spiciness. It is not as pungent as fresh ginger and has a milder taste.
Color: The most common type of pickled ginger is pink or pale rose in color. This pink hue is achieved by soaking the ginger slices in a mixture of rice vinegar, sugar, and a bit of salt.
Texture: Pickled ginger has a tender, crisp texture that contrasts well with the softness of sushi or sashimi. The slicing of ginger into thin strips ensures that it is easy to pick up with chopsticks.
Uses:
- Sushi and Sashimi: Pickled ginger is traditionally served with sushi and sashimi to cleanse the palate between bites.
- Condiment: It can be used as a condiment or garnish for various Asian dishes, including rice bowls, noodle dishes, and stir-fries.
- Sushi Rolls: Some sushi rolls incorporate pickled ginger within the roll for added flavor and texture.
- Marinade: It can be used as a marinade or a flavoring agent for grilled or roasted meats and vegetables.
- Salad: Pickled ginger can be added to salads for a unique flavor twist.
Health Benefits: Ginger, even in its pickled form, retains some of its health benefits. It is known for its potential anti-inflammatory and digestive properties.
Storage: Store pickled ginger in a cool, dark place or in the refrigerator. Properly stored, it has a long shelf life.
Variations: There are variations of pickled ginger, including natural pink ginger (which gets its color from beets instead of artificial additives) and pickled ginger with added wasabi for extra heat.
DIY: While pickled ginger is widely available in stores, some people prefer to make their own at home. Homemade pickled ginger can be customized to suit individual taste preferences.
Cultural Significance: In Japanese culture, pickled ginger is considered an important accompaniment to sushi. It is not only appreciated for its flavor but also for its role in cleansing the palate between different types of sushi.
In summary, food pickled ginger is a versatile condiment with a sweet and tangy flavor that is commonly associated with sushi but can be used in a variety of culinary applications. It adds a delightful contrast of flavor and texture to dishes and is a staple in Asian cuisine.

User questions & answers
Question: | What is the difference between the pink and white pickled ginger |
Answer: | Pink pickled ginger should get its color from shiso leaves, which are also a natural preservative. Look at the ingredients, avoid if they list "Red #3". White pickled ginger is acceptable. |
Question: | does it have aspertame |
Answer: | Yes it does. |
Question: | What country produce this product?! Japan |
Answer: | It’s a product of China |
Question: | What’s with all these sushi gingers having aspartame |
Answer: | I was also disappointed with the artificial sweetener... I'd rather have a real natural 5 g sugar than any artificial sweeteners! I'm glad noticing it before ordering it! I hope I can find one without the artificial sweeteners. |
Question: | What is the shelf life stamped on the bottles |
Answer: | It doesn't give any information on the bottle about shelf life. The web address on the bottle is www.rolandfood.com |
Question: | Is this really the *only* sushi ginger on amazon that doesn’t have aspartame in it |
Answer: | I'm unsure if this is the ONLY one without aspartame that was not why I chose the Roland brand. Ginger is also known as Gari and Sushi ginger is basically paper thin sliced gari pickled in vinegar and sugar. Have you also looked under the name gari or pickled gari? It isn't always pink as that is an added dye, too. If you're looking for all natural, seek out the sushi ginger that is cream or pale yellow colored. |
Question: | Does this product contain aspartame |
Answer: | Do not know, but has red 40. I return the product |
Question: | Is this soft ginger or is it crunchy? ex: At Benihana's they have a soft(er) ginger, and I have ordered take out sushi that had pink crunchy ginger |
Answer: | This is probably what you would call "crunchy". It's sliced ginger root (around a nickle to quarter size slices) that has been pickled. Benihana may be shredding their ginger to make it softer. You might look for shredded, grated or, for a finer piece, minced ginger. You'll have to find out if it's been pickled though or do it yourself (it's really just sugar and water to pickle ginger there are recipes all over the internet for it). Amazon has a selection of various gingers available (it's also a good tea for arthritic people) so I'll let your fingers do the typing to find out what's out there. A quick look found "Sokensha pickled ginger (minced) 60gX5 bags" for $28. There are probably more items available and don't just look at Amazon, I've seen Asian markets online that may have better choices or prices. You may even try your local (specialty) stores by phone and see what they have. Most of the major Food Chains are online, too. So you might find what you're looking for on your next shopping trip. GOOD LUCK! And I hope you find a great deal! -Linda |
Question: | Does this have dye in it |

SUSHI GINGER
The ginger is usually eaten before each course of sushi to eliminate the taste left by the previous food in the mouth.
The ginger itself has bactericidal effect, so the use of Sushi Ginger can prevent food poisoning to a certain extent. In addition, because sashimi is cold food, gingerols in ginger make the body temperature rise, reaching the goal of invigorating the stomach and increasing appetite.

- Pickled ginger contains gingerol, a naturally occurring chemical compound that has strong anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties.

Question: | What is the shelf life (expiry date) on these bottles |
Answer: | This item shelf life is 24 month. |
Question: | What Are The Benefits Of Using This Product |
Answer: | for me the benefit is that I don't have to pickle the ginger and then I don't have to slice ginger into paper thin slices and then I don't have to put every thing in the jar and because it comes in a jar and is pickled it is preserved and that means I can go into my refrigerator and the only work I have to do is unscrew the jar and eat it. I hope this answers your question |
Question: | Why ‘aspartame’ ? it has such an ‘off~putting, aftertaste! just figure out a better method to discontinue |
Answer: | Aspartame was removed from several products in 2002 due to the discovery of its carcinogen class with the FDA. It is known to cause tumors and excels the growth of cancer cells. Sugar is bad too, but will kill you much slower and will also burn off during exercise. Artificial seeeteners get stored as fat because the body does not understand them. |
