10 best millet flours

Millet flours are a type of flour made from various varieties of millet grains. Millets are small-seeded, drought-resistant grasses that have been cultivated for thousands of years, primarily in Africa and Asia. These grains are highly nutritious and provide a good source of vitamins, minerals, and dietary fiber. Millet flours are a gluten-free alternative to wheat flours, making them suitable for individuals with gluten sensitivities or celiac disease.

Here are some key points about millet flours:

  1. Types of Millet Flours: There are several varieties of millet, and each can be ground into flour. Some common types of millet flours include pearl millet flour, finger millet flour (ragi), sorghum millet flour, and foxtail millet flour.

  2. Nutritional Benefits: Millet flours are rich in nutrients like vitamins (especially B vitamins), minerals (such as magnesium and phosphorus), antioxidants, and dietary fiber. They are also considered a good source of protein, making them a valuable addition to a vegetarian or vegan diet.

  3. Gluten-Free: Millet flours do not contain gluten, making them suitable for individuals who need to avoid gluten due to celiac disease or gluten sensitivity. They can be used as a wheat flour substitute in gluten-free baking.

  4. Versatility: Millet flours can be used in a variety of culinary applications. They are commonly used in traditional dishes like roti or chapati in India and couscous in North Africa. They can also be used in baking, particularly for making gluten-free bread, pancakes, muffins, and cookies.

  5. Texture and Flavor: The texture and flavor of millet flours can vary depending on the type of millet used. Pearl millet flour has a slightly nutty flavor and a coarse texture, while finger millet flour (ragi) has a mild flavor and a finer texture.

  6. Storage: To keep millet flours fresh, store them in an airtight container in a cool, dry place. It's a good practice to use them within a reasonable time frame to ensure they remain flavorful and nutritious.

  7. Health Benefits: Millet flours are considered a healthy choice due to their high nutritional value. They may help support digestion, provide sustained energy, and contribute to overall well-being.

In summary, millet flours are gluten-free, nutritious alternatives to wheat flours that offer a range of culinary possibilities. They are valued for their health benefits and versatility in cooking and baking. Incorporating millet flours into your diet can be a flavorful and nutritious choice.

Great River Organic Milling

Product description

Great River Organic Milling is located on the upper Mississippi River, in the heart of what is called the Hiawatha Valley. The natural beauty of the area is a constant reminder of the importance of our commitment to organic agriculture. Organic, or sustainable agriculture is more than the avoidance of chemical fertilizers and pesticides. An organic farm strives to protect our environment by building and maintaining healthy soil which, in turn, improves water and air quality. It has been shown that grain and other food crops grown in a healthy soil, resist pests and diseases better than conventionally grown crops and also contain more vital nutrients important to humans. Consuming organic foods promotes the health of individuals and the land on which it was grown. In supporting organic agriculture we promote the cycle of a healthy environment which includes the lives of microorganisms, plants, and humans. Most Great River flour is stone-ground. We believe the natural granite millstones contribute to the quality, taste and nutritional integrity of whole grain flour. Grain flowing into the stones becomes very thin, flat flakes which integrates all parts of the wheat immediately into the flour, allowing the flour to have more flavor. The cooler temperatures that occur during milling with stones allows important enzyme activity to continue. Protein levels are also be maintained. Our stone-ground flours are milled to order, to retain the nutritional value of the flour. Great River is Certified Organic by Quality Assurance International and Kosher approved. Obtaining our certification requires a yearly inspection of our milling facility and records to insure that our products meet industry standards.

  • Contains 1 - 25 pound bag
  • It is a more complete protein than any of the other grains and is easily digested
  • As a flour it can be added to any baked good for nutritional enhancement
  • Certified organic and kosher approved
  • Grown and harvested in the USA
