14 best barley flour

Barley flour is a type of flour made from barley grains, specifically the kernels of the barley plant. It is a nutritious and versatile ingredient that has been used for centuries in various culinary applications. Here's what you need to know about barley flour:

  1. Production: Barley flour is produced by grinding whole barley grains or hulled barley (barley with the outer hull removed) into a fine powder. The milling process can produce different types of barley flour, including whole barley flour and pearl barley flour.

  2. Nutrition: Barley flour is known for its nutritional benefits. It is a good source of dietary fiber, vitamins, and minerals, including B vitamins, iron, magnesium, and phosphorus. It is also relatively low in gluten, making it an attractive option for those with gluten sensitivities.

  3. Flavor and Texture: Barley flour has a mild, nutty flavor and a slightly denser texture compared to wheat flour. It can add a subtle, earthy taste to baked goods.

  4. Gluten Content: While barley flour contains some gluten, it is not as high in gluten as wheat flour. Therefore, it is not suitable for making bread on its own but can be combined with wheat flour to make bread with a different texture and flavor.

  5. Uses:

    • Baking: Barley flour is commonly used in baking to make items like biscuits, pancakes, muffins, and quick breads. It can replace a portion of wheat flour in many recipes.
    • Thickening Agent: Due to its thickening properties, barley flour can be used to thicken soups, stews, and sauces.
    • Grain Bowls: It can be used to make grain bowls or porridge when cooked with water or milk.
    • Coating: Barley flour can be used as a coating for meats or vegetables before frying to create a crispy texture.
  6. Health Benefits: Barley flour is considered a healthy choice due to its fiber content, which can aid in digestion and promote a feeling of fullness. It may also help regulate blood sugar levels and reduce the risk of certain chronic diseases.

  7. Storage: Like other flours, barley flour should be stored in an airtight container in a cool, dry place to prevent spoilage and maintain its freshness.

In summary, barley flour is a nutritious and versatile ingredient that can be used in various culinary applications, from baking to thickening soups and sauces. Its unique flavor and texture make it an interesting addition to a wide range of recipes, and its nutritional benefits make it a healthy choice for those seeking dietary diversity.

  • Barley is rich in vitamins, minerals and other beneficial plant compounds. It’s available in many forms, ranging from hulled barley to barley grits, flakes and flour. Almost all forms of barley utilize the whole grain — except for pearl barley, which has been polished to remove some or the entire outer bran layer along with the hull.
  • This versatile grain has a somewhat chewy consistency and a slightly nutty flavor that can complement many dishes. It’s also rich in many nutrients and packs some impressive health benefits, ranging from improved digestion and weight loss.
  • Many of barley's health benefits come from it being an excellent source of dietary fiber. Fiber is essential for keeping the digestive system healthy.
  • Barley is a soluble fiber, meaning it can dissolve in water and provides the body with useful energy. Fiber can also be insoluble, meaning it passes through the digestive tract without breaking down and does not provide the body with energy.
  • You will be pleased to know that you can consume it in many kinds of preparations like salads, soups, and stews. Therefore, it does not only add value to your health but also to your palate. Additionally, barley packs lignans, a group of antioxidants. However, like all whole grains, barley does have antinutrients, which impair your body’s digestion and nutrient absorption.

  • Barley lessens hunger largely through its high fiber content. A soluble fiber known as beta-glucan is particularly helpful.
  • That’s because soluble fibers, such as beta-glucan, tend to form a gel-like substance in your gut, which slows the digestion and absorption of nutrients. In turn, this curbs your appetite and promotes fullness.
  • Barley is a very healthy grain. It’s rich in vitamins, minerals and other beneficial plant compounds.
  • To reap the most benefits, avoid processed, pearled barley and stick to whole-grain varieties like hulled barley or barley grits, flakes and flour.

Food to Live

Product description

You can easily make your baked goods more nutritious and delicious by adding some Barley Flour. Whole-Grain Barley Flour provides you with all the benefits of this incredible grain. It also contains some gluten. Therefore, you can use this flour on its own and not only in mixes since gluten helps the dough rise.

Food To Live Barley Flour is finely ground. It’s made from hulled barley using stone-grinding to minimize the loss of nutrients. By default, barley flour contains almost three times as much fiber as wheat flour.

Barley is also more nutritious than wheat. Therefore, this flour contains more essential minerals (iron and zinc) and B vitamins. The taste of whole-grain barley flour is also different. Whereas white wheat flour is almost tasteless, barley flour is mildly sweet and nutty. Therefore, by using it in a recipe, you enhance its taste even without any additional flavorings.

Finely Ground Barley Flour Uses and Storage Guide

Barley Flour contains some gluten, but only a little of it. Gluten is the ingredient that makes yeast rise and stretch. So this flour is best used in recipes where you don’t need the dough to rise.

For example, it’s the right choice for muffins, cookies, and flatbreads. You can also use it to make delicious and nutritious pancakes for breakfast.

If you want to add the benefits of barley to your bread or even pie crust, you can mix whole-grain barley flour with all-purpose flour.

Barley flour stores for about four months and needs to stay in a cool and dry place. Always keep it in a sealed airtight container. Double-check the seal after every use.

If you want to extend the shelf life of the flour, keep it in the freezer. But make sure that the container you use is 100% airtight. Otherwise, the flour will soak up moisture from the air.

  • DELICIOUS FLOUR: Whole-Grain Barley Flour has a delightfully nutty and slightly-sweet flavor that will enhance your dishes.
  • RICH IN NUTRIENTS: Barley is a nutritionally-rich grain, and barley flour also contains a lot of essential vitamins and minerals, including B vitamins, iron, and zinc.
  • GREAT SOURCE OF FIBER: Barley Flour contains about three times more fiber compared to white wheat flour.
  • EASY TO USE: You can use Finely Ground Barley Flour on its own or in flour mixes.
  • VERSATILE FOR BAKING: As it contains a small amount of gluten, Barley Flour great for cookies, muffins, and shortbread.

Great River Organic Milling

Product description

Great River Organic Milling is located on the upper Mississippi River, in the heart of what is called the Hiawatha Valley. The natural beauty of the area is a constant reminder of the importance of our commitment to organic agriculture. Organic, or sustainable agriculture is more than the avoidance of chemical fertilizers and pesticides. An organic farm strives to protect our environment by building and maintaining healthy soil which, in turn, improves water and air quality. It has been shown that grain and other food crops grown in a healthy soil, resist pests and diseases better than conventionally grown crops and also contain more vital nutrients important to humans. Consuming organic foods promotes the health of individuals and the land on which it was grown. In supporting organic agriculture we promote the cycle of a healthy environment which includes the lives of microorganisms, plants, and humans. Most Great River flour is stone-ground. We believe the natural granite millstones contribute to the quality, taste and nutritional integrity of whole grain flour. Grain flowing into the stones becomes very thin, flat flakes which integrates all parts of the wheat immediately into the flour, allowing the flour to have more flavor. The cooler temperatures that occur during milling with stones allows important enzyme activity to continue. Protein levels are also be maintained. Our stone-ground flours are milled to order, to retain the nutritional value of the flour. Great River is Certified Organic by Quality Assurance International and Kosher approved. Obtaining our certification requires a yearly inspection of our milling facility and records to insure that our products meet industry standards.

  • Contains 1 - 25 pound bag
  • Stone Ground from whole, hulled barley
  • Like brown rice, hulled barley is not stripped of its bran layer and so it is higher in fiber than pearled barley
  • Can be substituted for wheat flour in most quick bread recipes
  • Grown and harvested in the USA

Barony Mill, Stoneground Orkney Beremeal (Barley) Flour, 53 Ounce Bag

Barony Mills

Based on 13 reviews Check latest price

Product description

Bere is an ancient form of barley which is tolerant of the cool temperatures and short growing season of Orkney. Our Beremeal is 100% organic with nothing added in and nothing taken out. Low in gluten but high in protein and fiber, Beremeal is unique and distinctly Orcadian.

Like most northern mills of this period, a kiln for drying the grain is integral with the building. All mechanisms within the Mill are powered by a fully functional overshot waterwheel which is connected to the nearby Boardhouse Loch. All our grinding takes place over the winter and the Mill opens to the public over the summer.

The Barony Mill is Orkney’s last remaining working watermill and has been operated by the Birsay Heritage Trust since 1997. Built in 1873, the Barony Mill is believed to be the only working watermill in the world to still commercially produce Beremeal.

  • Bere is an ancient form of barley grown for thousands of years, with a unique appearance and taste, grown and milled in Orkney for over 300 years. 100% natural, it is perfect for baking Scottish bannocks, scones and cookies
  • 1.5kg (3.3 Lb) Bag
  • Bere has 4-6 rows of grain and long stalks. Modern barley has only 2 rows of grain and shorter stalks. Bere has more protein than modern barley, but less starch, and the yield from bere is lower.
  • 100% All Natural, Low in saturated fats, high in soluble fiber such as beta glucans which help to lower cholesterol and a source of many minerals and vitamins.
  • Each order comes with recipe booklet.

User questions & answers

User questions & answers

Question: Is this good to use in bread machines? Also, I don't imagine it's kneaded (heehee) if you're using something like Almond or Coconut Flour? Thanks
Answer: It's fine to use in a bread machine. I also don't imagine it's kneaded when baking exclusively with something like almond or coconut flour :-).
Question: Is this to be combined with the flour and dry ingredients or should it be combined with the wet ingredients first
Answer: Combine with the dry ingredients, whisk together before adding wet ingredients.
Question: I have been using this for grain-free baking at one tsp per 2 1/2 c flour. Can someone tell me what the reason is for the proportion in the direction
Answer: If you're using it for grain free baking, you're not grain free any longer. This product is malted barley, which is a grain. If you want a more accurate measurement, add it at 0.5% to 1.0% by weight in flour already containing barley malt (most AP and Bread flours). Get a kitchen scale and weigh things out. For example, if you have 100 grams of flour you would add 0.5 grams to 1.0 grams. That is very important when working with such small quantities. Adding too much diastatic malt powder will ruin your dough, and too little will do no good.
Question: How long will it Keep
Answer: It stays viable for 1 year from the time of milling. We ship freshly milled flour to Amazon regularly so it's likely your "best use" date won't be more than 11 (or possibly 10) months out.

Question: What differences are there between this whole-grain milled barley flour, and barley flour milled from pearled barley? Thanks
Answer: We mill the whole grain of barley, so it still ha the husk on. This results in a fine flour, but it does have some flecks of the hull that can often be seen in the finished product. It give the final product a rustic look, but you don’t notice the flecks when eating.
