Answer:	Hi there, I had asked this question this morning just before you did :) I ended up contacting the maker, as folks who purchased were not quite sure...this is the DoughEZ response: "...We designed it that way so that you can stack the stick for varying thickness. I do recommend that when doing this, simply wrap a small piece of plastic wrap around the center or ends of each set. This will prevent them from separating during the rolling process. I also place my guide sticks underneath the mat while rolling to avoid them from getting dough on them. Just less clean up. :)". Hope this helps!
