12 best gourmet balsamic vinegars
Gourmet balsamic vinegar is a high-quality and flavorful type of vinegar that originates from Italy. It is known for its rich, sweet, and complex taste, making it a versatile ingredient in cooking and culinary applications. Here are some key points about gourmet balsamic vinegar:
Origin: Authentic gourmet balsamic vinegar, known as Traditional Balsamic Vinegar, hails from the Modena and Reggio Emilia regions of Italy. It is made from grape juice that is aged for an extended period.
Production: Gourmet balsamic vinegar is typically made from freshly crushed grape juice (known as "must") that is aged and fermented in wooden barrels. The aging process can take many years, and the vinegar is often transferred to different types of wood barrels, such as oak, cherry, or chestnut, to develop its unique flavor.
Flavor Profile: Gourmet balsamic vinegar offers a complex flavor profile with notes of sweetness, acidity, and a deep, rich aroma. The longer it is aged, the more concentrated and nuanced its flavor becomes. It can range from mildly sweet to intensely syrupy and sweet, with hints of fruit, caramel, and oak.
Uses in Cooking: Gourmet balsamic vinegar is a prized ingredient in many gourmet dishes. It can be used as a finishing drizzle on salads, vegetables, or grilled meats. It pairs exceptionally well with fresh mozzarella, strawberries, or even vanilla ice cream.
Reduction: One popular culinary technique involving balsamic vinegar is reduction. By simmering the vinegar gently, it thickens and becomes a sweet, syrupy glaze that can be used to enhance the flavor of various dishes.
Grading: Authentic balsamic vinegar is often graded based on its quality and aging process. The highest quality is known as "Traditional Balsamic Vinegar," which is aged for a minimum of 12 years and can be quite expensive. There are also more affordable options available, labeled as "Balsamic Vinegar of Modena."
Imitations: Be cautious of cheap imitations labeled as "balsamic vinegar" that may not have undergone the traditional aging process. Authentic gourmet balsamic vinegar typically comes in small bottles, and the label often indicates its age.
Storage: To preserve its flavor, store gourmet balsamic vinegar in a cool, dark place, away from direct sunlight. It has a long shelf life and can be enjoyed for several years.
Gourmet balsamic vinegar is a prized ingredient for chefs and food enthusiasts alike. Its exquisite taste and versatility make it a cherished addition to many culinary creations, adding depth and complexity to a wide range of dishes.

User questions & answers
Question: | Why is the price per ounce listed actually the price per bottle? I hope the supplier will answer |
Answer: | Hello, 45 calories per serving (serving size is 15 ml/ 1 Tbsp) |
Question: | How should I store it? and for how long is it good after opening the bottle |
Answer: | Balsamic vinegar is made from two Italian grapes. Trebbiano (white) and Lambrusco (red) |
Question: | Please tell me how many calories it has listed on the label. Thank you |
Answer: | In Italy, the only balsamic that can state age is a DOP product. These run at a minimum of 12 years and require the approval of the Consortium there. In keeping with these rules, we are not able to state the specific number of years aged. I can, however, give you some extra info on the pre-bottling aging process. This balsamic is a Balsamic Vinegar of Modena - balsamic that is aged in wooden casks. This balsamic has been aged in Oak barrels with the minimum eighty percent concentrated grape must and aged red wine vinegar. With this high quantity of grape must, you'll find a balsamic that is wonderfully sweet (no added sugars) and with a great thickness. This 16 fl oz balsamic is a great mix of quantity and quality such that you have a deep viscosity that will work well for a salad and cling right on to meats, cheeses, bread and more. If you are in the hunt for a DOP certified balsamic, look for a 3.4 oz bottle with the specific certification from the Italian consortium. This is the one size they'll come in and typically range around $150-250 per 3.4 oz bottle. If you're thinking of a balsamic for every day and weekly use, we'd be happy if you gave our product a go. If you are not completely satisfied, we are happy to help you. |
Question: | Any info on what color of grape was used? Crimson, black, dark blue, yellow, white/green, orange, or pink, etc |
Answer: | No. There is no alcohol in Blazing Bella Balsamic (Barrel aged traditional, 250mg). I have many of their balsamic vinegars and they are all delicious. I wouldn't even consider purchasing another brand of balsamic vinegar. Blazing Bella is the best!!! None of their balsamic vinegars have any alcohol. |

User questions & answers
Question: | How long has this been aged for |
Answer: | 100% barrel-aged wine must and barrel-aged wine vinegar. No additives or preservatives as required by the Italian Growers Association. |
Question: | Where on the label does it have the IGP seal |
Answer: | Balsamic vinegar should never be refrigerated. In fact, the wine must (the crucial ingredient of balsamic vinegar) is aged in wood barrels that have been exposed to the elements during the aging process. Specifically, a small hole cut at the top of the barrel allows natural evaporation during the aging process. Wine vinegar is then added to the wine must. Like olive oil and vinegar, balsamic vinegar should simply be stored out of direct sunlight at room temperature. I suggest leaving the balsamic vinegar out of the fridge for a few days and it may return to normal, but it is quite possible that some separation has occurred. |
Question: | What are this product's ingredients |
Answer: | This bottle is a great value in balsamic vinegar, but the Amazon minions that type these descriptions all day do make mistakes from time to time. |
Question: | Is this supposed to solidify in the fridge? I found that after using maybe a quarter, it is no longer pouring, and appears to have solidified. Normal |
Answer: | Keep it in your regular kitchen cabinet or your pantry. Balsamic vinegar doesn't need any special care. Keep it away from direct heat and sunlight and do not put it in the fridge. Balsamic vinegar does not expire so basically you could store it for many years. Nevertheless, the expiration date is printed on the back label, it should give you plenty of time to consume it. |

User questions & answers
Question: | how many grams of sugar & carbs |
Answer: | no |
Question: | does this contain sulfites |
Answer: | I am not sure if pesticides were used on the grapes. It is a product of Italy. It has a wonder flavor. |
Question: | Refrigerate after open |
Answer: | The Italian Consortium does not permit producers of balsamic vinegar to show the "age" of balsamic vinegar on their labels or boxes. In fact, given the barrel aging process employed by traditional producers it would be impossible to give a precise age since older vinegars are topped up each year from a barrel which holds a vintage that is one year younger.Goccia Oro is a premium balsamic vinegar with a viscosity of 1.33 compared to grocery store varieties of 1.04. As such, it has a higher percentage of wine must to wine vinegar and pours like a syrup.Sadly, there are many deceptive labels and claims when it comes to olive oil and balsamic vinegar. Realistically, the only thing you can do is to insure there is an IGP seal and tilt the bottle to see how viscous it is. The more syrupy it is often helps separate quality balsamic from pretenders. |
Question: | were any pesticides sprayed on the grapes used |
Answer: | The IGP seal is on the back of the bottle and on the back of the box. We shortly post an image of the seal in the photos of the product listed on Amazon. |

User questions & answers
Question: | What are the ingredients |
Answer: | Cooked grape must and wine vinegar. It has a sweet taste but no sugar is added; the grapes themselves are the sweetness, I think. You will love this balsamic vinegar and will want to keep it on the table to use on many things. I have found that if I keep it in a dark place, away from the heat, I forget about it, so it stays on my marble pastry slab to keep it cool in our southern climate. |
Question: | does this need refrigeration |
Answer: | I do not refrigerate mine. I have had several bottles, and have never refrigerated them. It is the best Balsamic! |
Question: | can anybody compare this to other 18 year aged balsamics? A lot of the young stuff is barely dense |
Answer: | This is not aged18 years, but is good. You'll have to try a few pricer brands or go to a DOP to get much better, althugh tastes vary of course. Botte Piccola is similar but less tangy, Mussini Reserva di Famiglia is a step up to 14 years ages but is only 100 ml, not 250. Mia Bella is not in the same class, it's more food-grade. Hope this helps. |
Question: | Why do i not see the mandatory accredidation "aceto balsamico tradizionale di modena" printed on the label if it is the real thing |
Answer: | Perhaps you are referring to the DOP accreditation (Denominazione di Origine Protetta) rather than the words in your question. DOP certified balsamic vinegar production is subject to oversight be the DOP consortium. The balsamic can only contain grape must and nothing else - no wine vinegar, no sugar, no caramel coloring ... nothing. It has to be aged for a minimum of 12 years, and comes in a specifically shaped bottle which the produce has to buy from the consortium. It will also cost you 2-3x more than this depending on the source. I have a couple of bottles of the DOP and it is truly amazing balsamic, but at about $100 for a small 3.5 ounce bottle I use it sparingly and probably wouldn't put it on a salad. I've not tried this particular balsamic, but from the reviews, it looks like a good balsamic for salads and many other uses. |

Crafted in Modena, Italy Since 1605
Giuseppe Giusti was founded in 1605 in Modena, Italy and is the longest running and most prestigious vinegar producer worldwide. Giusti is dedicated to constantly improving its attention to the environment and adopts the best practices in order to reduce the environmental impact for greater sustainable agriculture. Today, the 17th generation of the Giusti family continues the tradition of creating beautiful balsamic vinegar.
Time-Honored Process
Grapes for Giustiâs balsamic vinegars are carefully selected for their high quality and delicate concentration of sugars and acidity, usually Lambrusco and Trebbiano varieties from the provinces of Modena and Reggio Emilia in beautiful Northern Italy. The grapes are then pressed and the fresh juice is boiled down to a thick, sweet syrup. The syrup then ages in a wooden cask along with the âMotherâ vinegar.
Aged in Centuries Old Casks
The heart of our production is a collection of 600 casks dating back to the 1600s, from where the purest extractions that create the unmistakable aroma of our balsamic vinegars are collected. Casks provide an intensity of wood essences and aromas to vinegars, and the older the cask, the more complex the vinegar. Each vinegar is aged to perfection and IGP certified to ensure authenticity.

User questions & answers
Question: | difference between villa manodori balsamic vinegar and villa manodori balsamic vinegar Artigianale |
Answer: | 8.5, but this balsamic is like syrup and a little goes a long way! Best product you can get!!! |
Question: | Is there a big difference between this and a $15-$20 bottle? I am thinking much better than $5 bottle but concerned about the "diminishing return |
Answer: | Don't have a clue. That being said, it is an excellent, high end balsamic. This is not a balsamic to be used to make a basic salad dressing. That would be a waste. Rather, this is used sparingly, e.g., with a good EVOO on a mozzarella and tomato salad or on sandwich made with an excellent loaf of bread. |
Question: | How many ounces is this bottle of Villa Manodori Balsamic Vinegar |
Answer: | There are 11g of sugars and 11g of carbs per Tbs. |
Question: | Ingredient? Grape with no sugar, Carmel, etc |
Answer: | The ingredients list says "cooked grape musts and wine vinegar". Having said that, grapes have "naturally" occuring sulfites (there is naturally occuring sulfur in many foods. Grapes are among them.) But there is no "added man made sulfites" here (which I think is your concern and what some people are allergic to). Grape musts are the parts of the grape that are used to make wine from grapes (musts means: skin, flesh, seeds of the grape). M G Pappas is a very good, aged balsamic vinegar without any additives (unless you count wine vinegar as such), and less acid than less quality ones. Modena, Italy is a place where some of the best balsamic vinegars come from. |
Product description
The Traditional Balsamic Vinegar di Modena is aged for at least 25 years and is unique from all other vinegar-based condiments. Unlike ordinary vinegar which has its origins in an alcoholic liquid, balsamic vinegar is produced directly from grape juice. This vinegarâs therapeutic properties have now been confirmed by its high content of mineral salts and sugars.
The grapes are harvested in the same region in which this balsamic vinegar is produced, crushed and its liquid must be boiled in an open vat over a fire. This liquid is then placed in high-quality wooden barrels in which through an oxidation process is transformed into vinegar. The barrels are kept in a vinegar loft âacataiaâ where inside is lovingly cared for through a special technique involving transfers and topping up. Over many years micro biotic and enzymatic modifications unite to achieve an exceptional balance in flagrance and flavor.

Crafted in Modena, Italy
Giuseppe Giusti was founded in 1605 in Modena, Italy, and is the longest-running and most prestigious vinegar producer worldwide.
Aged in Centuries-Old Casks
The heart of our production is a collection of 600 casks dating back to the 1600s, from where the purest extractions that create the unmistakable aroma of our balsamic vinegars are collected. Casks provide an intensity of wood essences and aromas to vinegars, and the older the cask, the more complex the vinegar. Each vinegar is aged to perfection and IGP certified to ensure authenticity.

User questions & answers
Question: | How long has this product been aged before bottling |
Question: | is this contain alcohol |
Answer: | No. There is no alcohol in Blazing Bella Balsamic (Barrel aged traditional, 250mg). I have many of their balsamic vinegars and they are all delicious. I wouldn't even consider purchasing another brand of balsamic vinegar. Blazing Bella is the best!!! None of their balsamic vinegars have any alcohol. |
Question: | What are the ingredients |
Answer: | For the traditional: 100% Balsamic Vinegar. Scroll through product images to see Nutrition Facts - at the bottom of that image, the ingredients are listed. |
Question: | does the 8.5 oz sampler come with a pourer |
Answer: | Yes, each 8.5 fl oz bottle comes with a built-in plastic pourer. |
