13 best cacao nibs
Cacao nibs are small, crushed pieces of roasted cocoa beans. They are a popular ingredient in cooking, baking, and various culinary applications. Here's some information about cacao nibs:
Origin: Cacao nibs are derived from cacao beans, which come from the cacao tree (Theobroma cacao). These trees are primarily grown in tropical regions near the equator, with major cacao-producing countries including Ivory Coast, Ghana, and Indonesia.
Processing: Cacao nibs are made by roasting cacao beans, removing their shells, and then crushing the inner portions into small, crunchy pieces. The roasting process helps develop their rich flavor.
Flavor: Cacao nibs have an intense, deep chocolate flavor with a slightly bitter and nutty undertone. They are less sweet than traditional chocolate, making them a versatile ingredient for various recipes.
Nutrition: Cacao nibs are a nutritional powerhouse. They are packed with antioxidants, fiber, and various essential minerals such as magnesium, iron, and potassium. They are also a source of healthy fats and protein.
Uses:
- Baking: Cacao nibs can be added to baked goods like cookies, brownies, and muffins to impart a rich chocolate flavor and a satisfying crunch.
- Smoothie Bowls: They are a popular topping for smoothie bowls and acai bowls, adding texture and a burst of chocolate flavor.
- Trail Mix: Cacao nibs are often included in homemade trail mix along with nuts and dried fruits for a nutritious and tasty snack.
- Hot Chocolate: Some people use cacao nibs to make a natural and less sweet hot chocolate by steeping them in hot milk or a milk alternative.
- Salads: They can be sprinkled on salads to provide a unique crunch and a hint of chocolate flavor.
- Energy Bars: Cacao nibs are a common ingredient in homemade energy bars and granola bars, providing a healthy boost of energy.
Storage: To keep cacao nibs fresh, store them in an airtight container in a cool, dark place. Avoid exposure to heat and moisture, as this can cause them to become rancid.
Vegan and Gluten-Free: Cacao nibs are naturally vegan and gluten-free, making them suitable for a wide range of dietary preferences.
Cacao vs. Cocoa: It's important not to confuse cacao nibs with cocoa powder or cocoa nibs. Cacao nibs are made from raw cacao beans, while cocoa powder is made from roasted beans. The two have different flavors and nutritional profiles.
In summary, cacao nibs are a nutritious and versatile ingredient that can enhance the flavor and texture of various dishes. They are particularly favored by those seeking a healthier, less processed alternative to traditional chocolate chips or cocoa powder.

User questions & answers
Question: | Why isn’t this returnable? It is low quality and I don’t like it |
Answer: | These nibs are raw. The flavor is much improved by toasting. I ground the nibs in a coffee grinder, then stirred them in a pan over medium heat until they were dark and smelled chocolatey. They did not melt. Toasting brings out the chocolate flavor, and reduces the acidic/raw flavor notes. I brew ground nibs in a tea pot using a in-pot strainer and 1 tbsp ground nibs / cup of water for 15-20 minutes. |
Question: | Where is the origin of the cacao? Is it sourced from Ecuador or Peru |
Answer: | Thanks for pointing out the difference. It is 2 boxes that are 2lbs each and not 5lbs. A new photo will need to replace the current one. |
Question: | We’re these cocoa beans roasted before cracked and made into nibs |
Answer: | Sadly, I did pay that much for the 2 boxes but remember these are 2lb boxes so bigger than the ones in store. If you can get it cheaper and don’t have a child obsessed with that brand, then do buy elsewhere |
Question: | I saw on package this is fermented cacao, but is 'fermented' or 'raw' better? which is better for health? Thanks |
Answer: | The boxes that I received did have the Aunt Jemima picture on them and name. Read they have anew name and logo that was released this week but it was not out when I bought this. |

Question: | is your cocoa powder and nibs alkaline free? Non dutch processed |
Answer: | no syrup comes with this |
Question: | The package doesn't say raw on it. Are these raw? Also, the ingredients list "organic" cocao, but why is there no certification on the label |
Answer: | You can microwave them in the cup the way it's designed, and eat right from the cup; or you can use the same batter and pour from the cup into a pan and make individual pancakes. It's really good either way! |

Our cacao nibs are nutrient dense superfoods that come from peeled and crumbled cacao beans that are 100% raw and naturally fermented to remove phytic acid. The cacao nibs are then naturally sun-dried by our farmers in Peru. With a crunchy texture similar to a coffee bean, they provide a rich, pleasantly bitter chocolate flavor.
Cacao Nibs are known to contain theobromine, an energy booster which has a similar effect to caffeine. They also contain a rich supply of antioxidants, dietary fiber, magnesium, potassium and are low in carbohydrates and sugar.
Great with smoothies/drinks, cereals, yogurt, oatmeal, baked goods, cookies, ice-cream, trail mix, granola bars, coffee, snack foods, or as a fantastic chocolate chip substitute in any recipe for a tasty and fun meal!
Healthworks Raw Organic Unsweetened Cacao Nibs also go very well with Healthworks Cacao Powder, Chia Seeds, Maca Powder and Goji Berries.

- CACAO VS. COCOA: Chocolate chips have been around for centuries with indigenous tribes treasuring the cacao bean for its nutritional and natural properties. Confused by many, cacao and cocoa have different characteristics. Common chocolate-based foods are derived from cacao seeds which come from the cacao plant. Healthworks Cacao nibs are naturally sun dried while cocoa nibs are made by roasting the beans at high temps.

User questions & answers
Question: | Id love to buy this but i would just like to know if this organic cacao powder can be used for baking cake? thanks |
Answer: | The only 2 ingredients listed are organic cacao and organic maca, so yes it contains maca. But doesn't give the ratio. |
Question: | Is this cacoa certified against child slave labor |
Answer: | Hi, I opened mine and there was a slight vinegar odor but it went away quickly when the bag was left open...the dark unsweetened chocolate has a distinct odor on it's on without tampering from all the chemicals. I would suggest opening the bag and let it breath for a little...like a fine bottle of wine. Then see what happens mine smell great and taste great. Hope this helps, good luck and happy baking! |
Question: | where is it grown |
Answer: | Hi Isabel L.,Unfortunately, the consistency of cacao nibs is not identical to chocolate chips. Raw cacao nibs are higher in protein and fiber and as a result, will not melt. Chocolate chips are a combination of cocoa powder, milk ingredients, sugar and other fillers that allow the chocolate to melt, whereas cacao nibs consist of tiny bits of cacao beans that been broken. Cacao nibs represent the true essence of cacao and are considered to be all-natural additions to cookies, muffins, cereals etc. Hope this helps answer your question, and if you have any other questions you can reach us by responding to this comment thread or by email at [email protected] NutritionistViva Labs |
Question: | What is the cadmium content of this product |
Answer: | So I called the company and talked to a representative in quality control...their cacao is analysed by a 3rd party and certified organic. All the new packages will have the california new law P65 warning as they are complying to a law but it applies to water. The soil the cacao is growing in has a certain amount of minerals. The P65 new law is requesting them to let people know that some minerals in high concentration could be dangerous to your health. It doesn't mean this product has any of it. I read the 3rd party report and can vouch for its quality...i have been ordering this product for many years and as a nutritionist i am extremely careful with what i ingest. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Just got my cacao nibs. They smell and taste like vinegar? Have they gone bad |
Answer: | I'm sorry but I've already finished/throw away the bag.I think there is a very small amount of caffeine in cacao nibs but I've not been feeling jittery or anything.I found u some info online about caffeine in cocao nibs hope it helps.Caffeine and TheobromineCaffeine is one of a family of chemicals called xanthines. Both caffeine and theobromine, another xanthine compound, occur naturally in cacao beans. Both are stimulants and mild diuretics, although theobromine is much weaker than caffeine. A research study by the Department of Thoracic Medicine, National Heart and Lung Institute, Imperial College London, suggests that theobromine may act as a cough suppressant.Effects of CaffeineCaffeine is a stimulant that affects the central nervous system, giving you a sense of alertness. It is also a muscle relaxant that is used medicinally to treat migraine headaches and asthma. According to guidelines published by the South Dakota Department of Health, 300mg of caffeine per day is a moderate amount for healthy adults. Some people are more sensitive to caffeine than others, and will experience nervousness, headache, or stomachache if they consume too much caffeine.Amount of Caffeine in Cocoa PowderAccording to nutritional information published by the Hershey Center For Health And Nutrition, 1 tbsp. of cocoa contains about 8mg of caffeine and 106mg of theobromine. As a comparison, a cup of decaffeinated coffee contains between 2mg 4mg of caffeine, while a cup of regular drip brewed coffee contains between 65mg and 120mg of caffeine. |
Question: | Can I melt the cocao nibs in a microwave and coat the cocoa onto the surface of a strawberry |
Answer: | Probably because it is a food item and has been opened. I do not think Terrasoul is low quality. It is your individual opinion. I like their product. |
Question: | So this product has the cal prop warning that it does contain chemicals |
Answer: | Peru |
Question: | How do the metals (Pd, Cd, As, Hg, and Al) rank in ppm for this product? Info found on other brands, but not this one |
Answer: | Hi, Thank you for reaching out to us. Our Criollo variety cacao nibs are perfectly versatile and nutrient-dense bites created from peeled and crumbled cacao beans. User questions & answers
Question: | Can nibs be ground into a powder form using a blender? A coffee-grinder |
Answer: | GREAT question because the packaging doesn't say where it comes from. Certified by a company in CA and distributed by a company in AZ but nothing on the label stating where it was grown. I may reconsider using it although it does have a good chocolate flavor. The uncertainty of where it came from leaves me uncomfortable. Thanks for asking this question. |
Question: | How well does this blend compared to the powder form? Can a strong blender such as the Vitamix do the same job |
Answer: | According to foodensity.com, by 2025, the warning labels can be avoided only when cadmium is reduced to less than 0.800 ppm. 1.145 ppm is about 43% more cadmium than that limit. The current limit (in 2019) is 0.960 ppm. 1.145 ppm is 19% over that limit. In increasing order of mean cadmium content, Africa has the least, followed by Asia, then by Latin America. The African-origin cacaos are very nearly 0. That said, the caveat is that cadmium uptake differs by factors like the soil acidity, soil zinc content, and cadmium in water. After you eat it, cadmium absorption may only be around 3~5%. The really scary thing is how long cadmium hangs around in the body, and that’s probably why California and the EU sets such high standards for the heavy metal. |
Question: | I ordered the sweet nibs and love them not realizing there are also just regular cocoa nibs. Is there a big difference |
Answer: | Not on its own, id mix it with a protein shake and a good fat like avocado or coconut. |
Question: | Can you use these in a chocolate cookie recipe? has anyone tried that idea |
Answer: | I have the same question. We’re you able to find out? Iv done a few google searches without an answer. I absolutely will not buy this cacao powder if it’s not ethnically sourced/ fair trade compliant. |

The best way to store Organic Cacao Nibs is in a burlap bag lined with plastic. However, any airtight container will do.
- Organic Cacao Nibs nutrition value is rather high. They have about 6% of the recommended daily amount of iron in an ounce and a massive dose of Manganese, Magnesium, and Phosphorus. They are also rich in dietary fiber and antioxidants.
- Various nutrients and flavonoids from Organic Cacao Nibs make them perfect for your general wellbeing. They are particularly good for the heart and digestive tract. The best news is that as parts of crushed cacao beans, nibs also contain the endorphin-inducing chemicals. Therefore, foods with them make you happier.
- The easiest way to enjoy Organic Cacao Nibs is to add nibs to muffins, cookies, pancake batter, and various baked goods. They will give a pleasant chocolate crunch to any such treats. They are also a healthier alternative to sweet chocolate chips and are 100% vegan. Aside from baking, you can add organic cacao nibs to morning cereals, granolas, and trail mixes. They will boost the nutritional value of these foods and introduce a new dimension of flavor. Although these organic cacao nib recipes are less popular, you can also use them in savory dishes. Salads, stews, and sauces will benefit from them most. As Organic Cacao Nibs are unsweetened, they are safe to use in any recipe.
- You should try adding Organic Cacao Nibs to homemade chocolates and truffles. Drinks will benefit from them as well, but you might need to crush them further for that. Adding a spoonful of Organic Cacao Nibs to your morning smoothie is an excellent idea as well.

User questions & answers
Question: | is it hard? may i just chew it |
Answer: | No it's not resealable. You will have to put it in something to seal it. |
Question: | Regarding the cocao nibs the description says it goes through a low temperature process, does that mean its roasted or is it still considered raw |
Answer: | Do not confuse baking soda with baking powder which does or may contain aluminum. These are two very different products with baking powder having a mix of baking soda with various acidic ingredients. Make sure you are purchasing pure 100% baking soda or sodium bicarbonate.Arm and Hammers is as aluminum free as Bob's Red Mill, which advertizes itself specifically to be aluminum free, and in the process has convinced most people I know that Arm and Hammers has aluminum when it does not.http://drsircus.com/medicine/sodium-bicarbonate-baking-soda/sodium-bicarbonate |
Question: | Are the nibs still sourced from Peru |
Answer: | I think it is......I know it has no aluminum in it and I drink it |
Question: | Has the amount of cadmium and lead been determined for this product |
Answer: | Yes, each box should contain four 16oz bags! |

CACAO BENEFITS
Antioxidants which may fight free radical oxidation.
Theobromine which may provide a slow release of energy throughout the day for non-jittery natural energy.
Anandamide and phenylethylamine which may increase the feeling of love and happiness while blocking feelings of pain and depression.
Magnesium, Calcium, Potassium, and Selenium
THEOBROMINE vs. CAFFFEINE
Unlike coffee, the caffeine content in cacao is extremely low and usually insignificant. The primary compound responsible for Cacao’s energizing properties is Theobromine.
Theobromine is a cardiovascular stimulant that has less impact on the central nervous system than caffeine. It is also a vasodilator and diuretic, and relaxes the smooth muscles including those in the respiratory system.
These properties have been shown in studies to promote healthy blood pressure and relaxation.

User questions & answers
Question: | CAn you use these in Carob chip cookies |
Answer: | The Cuisanart 622-30G 12” skillet I received comes with a removable sticker label on the inside nonstick coating that says QuanTanium by Whitford. The Whitford website states cookware is “Our PFOA-free coatings, specifically designed for use in the Cookware market...” The QuanTanium coating fact sheet states ”PTFE, made without PFOA”. |
Question: | Are these tested for contamination |
Answer: | No it is not. The pan is made out of aluminum, which is not a ferrous metal. Induction cooktops require using cookware that a magnet will stick on. Cast iron and carbon steel pans are the natural cookware choices. Stainless steel pans have to be made with 18/0(zero) steel to be compatible. All other cookware metals require a thin layer of 18/0 stainless steel on the base of the pan for them to work on an induction stove. |
Question: | what are the cadmium levels of this product |
Answer: | Yes, it works the same as other pans. |
Question: | What is the exact process of fermentation? If heated, at what temperature |
Answer: | This is how the company answers this question on their site: "Like most of our products that we sell, our baking soda is minimally processed (with water) and a product of nature, nothing added (including aluminum), nothing taken out. There could be naturally occurring trace elements of aluminum in our baking soda due to the fact it is a mineral from the earth, but it is safe to say it is aluminum free." |
