13 best artichokes
Artichokes are a type of edible vegetable known for their unique appearance and delicious, tender hearts. They belong to the thistle family and are widely used in cooking, making them a common item found in the grocery, gourmet food, and pantry staples sections. Here's what you should know about artichokes:
Appearance: Artichokes have a large, globe-shaped bud with thick, green, pointed leaves that surround the edible part known as the "heart." The leaves have sharp thorns on their tips.
Varieties: The most common variety of artichoke is the globe artichoke (Cynara scolymus). There are also smaller, elongated varieties like the baby artichoke and the purple artichoke, which have a slightly different flavor and appearance.
Nutrition: Artichokes are a nutritious vegetable. They are low in calories and a good source of dietary fiber, vitamins (especially vitamin C and folate), and minerals (such as potassium and magnesium). They are also known for their high antioxidant content.
Flavor and Texture: Artichokes have a mild, slightly nutty flavor with a tender and meaty texture in their hearts. The leaves, while less commonly eaten, are often scraped with the teeth to extract the flesh at the base.
Preparation: Artichokes require preparation before cooking. This typically involves trimming the thorny tips of the leaves and cutting off the top portion of the artichoke. They can be boiled, steamed, roasted, or grilled. The tender heart is the most prized part and is commonly used in various dishes.
Dips: Artichokes are often served with a dipping sauce, such as garlic butter or aioli, to complement their mild flavor.
Canned and Jarred Artichokes: Canned and jarred artichokes are available as a convenient option for cooking. These products are often packed in water, oil, or brine and can be used in a variety of recipes, including salads, pasta dishes, and dips.
Culinary Uses: Artichokes can be used in a wide range of dishes, including artichoke dip, artichoke and spinach-stuffed chicken, artichoke salad, and pasta dishes like artichoke and sun-dried tomato pasta. They are also a popular ingredient in Mediterranean cuisine.
Seasonality: Artichokes are a seasonal vegetable, with peak availability in the spring. However, you can find canned and jarred artichokes year-round.
Health Benefits: Consuming artichokes may have various health benefits, such as improving digestion, reducing cholesterol levels, and providing antioxidants that can help protect cells from damage.
Selection and Storage: When buying fresh artichokes, look for ones that feel heavy for their size and have tightly packed leaves.Store them in the refrigerator and use them within a few days for the best flavor and texture.
Artichokes are a versatile and nutritious vegetable that can be enjoyed in a variety of culinary creations. Whether fresh or canned, they add a unique flavor and texture to dishes and are a popular choice for those looking to incorporate healthy, delicious vegetables into their meals.

User questions & answers
Question: | Is the citric scid derived from soy |
Answer: | I dont beliefe if is kosher |
Question: | Are these on the keto diet |
Answer: | They're frozen, so for the time being they can be delivered (via a local Whole Foods or perhaps Amazon Fresh) if you're not shopping in person. |
Question: | Are these artichoke hearts organic, or no? Very important, basic question. Thank you |
Answer: | In much the same way you would use a lemon bath at home, the citric acid has everything to do with keeping the artichoke hearts from browning while they are "prepped" for freezing. The quantity used for this purpose is incidental and doesn't affect the taste of the artichoke hearts. |
Question: | Are these gluten free |
Answer: | You make an excellent point; apparently the title is mistaken. The vast majority of frozen and canned artichoke hearts available in the US market -- including these -- are from Peru. And not organic. Fresh ones are typically from CA; I can tell you firsthand as recent as earlier this year and last year the gorgeous artichokes for sale in Cali were not listed as organic either. No idea what the background is on that. I have caved in to my cravings and used both these artichokes and canned ones with good results. |

Question: | Why does the description say they are high in fiber, but the nutrition label says there isn't any fiber? I thought they had protein too |
Answer: | Not sure if this is a question for the vendor or in general? Just my 2 cents: Unless a recipe calls for coarse salt- say a focaccia, (then I prefer a corse sea salt); I will always use https://realsalt.com/mine/ The salt profile really compliments the food highlighting and bringing flavors together in a way other salts cannot. If you haven’t tried it- it’s definitely worth a test, not to mention the health benefits. |
