9 best mastic gum for chewing

Mastic gum, also known simply as "mastic," is a resin obtained from the mastic tree (Pistacia lentiscus). It has been used for various purposes for centuries, including as a chewing gum and in traditional medicine. Here's what you should know about mastic gum for chewing:

  1. Natural Resin: Mastic gum is a natural resin that is harvested from the bark of the mastic tree. It is typically obtained by making small cuts or incisions in the tree's bark, allowing the resin to ooze out and harden.

  2. Chewing Gum: Mastic gum has been traditionally used as a chewing gum in Mediterranean and Middle Eastern cultures for its unique flavor and potential health benefits. It has a distinct and earthy flavor with a slightly pine-like or cedar-like taste.

  3. Chewing Benefits: Chewing mastic gum is believed to offer several potential benefits, such as freshening breath, promoting oral hygiene, and aiding in digestion. It is often used as a natural alternative to modern chewing gums that may contain synthetic ingredients and sweeteners.

  4. Digestive Aid: In traditional medicine, mastic gum has been used to help with digestive issues, such as indigestion and heartburn. It is thought to have soothing properties that can help alleviate gastrointestinal discomfort.

  5. Potential Health Benefits: Mastic gum has gained attention for its potential health benefits, including its antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory properties. Some studies have explored its use in addressing conditions like Helicobacter pylori (a bacteria associated with stomach ulcers) and inflammatory bowel diseases.

  6. Culinary Uses: Mastic gum is also used in cooking and baking in some Mediterranean and Middle Eastern cuisines. It can be added to desserts, pastries, and beverages to impart its unique flavor.

  7. Availability: Mastic gum for chewing is available in various forms, including as small resinous granules or beads. These can be chewed directly or softened in the mouth for a gum-like consistency.

  8. Storage: To keep mastic gum fresh and pliable, it should be stored in an airtight container in a cool, dry place. Exposure to heat and moisture can cause it to harden and lose its chewy consistency.

It's important to note that while mastic gum has been associated with various potential health benefits, more research is needed to fully understand its effects and confirm its therapeutic uses.Additionally, individual reactions to mastic gum may vary, so it's advisable to consult with a healthcare professional before using it as a remedy for specific health concerns.

Mastic gum is primarily known for its unique flavor and cultural significance, making it a distinctive and natural option for those interested in chewing gum with a traditional twist.

Product description

Mastic is a 100% natural product. That means that NOT all the pieces of mastic (or tears as they are called) are the same. Some pieces are bigger, some are smaller, some are harder and some are softer. · Mastic -due to temperature- is softer in summer and harder in winter. · Usually larger pieces are softer than the smaller ones which dry out and harden faster. · Generally, medium or large pieces are better for chewing and small pieces are better for grounding them into powder.Chios island is home to mastiha also known as mastic. But why is mastiha so special? Mastiha is basically a resin from the mastiha trees and appears in drops. While the mastiha trees may grow in other areas in the Mediterranean and produce resin, only trees in Chios produce the mastiha “tears” that have the characteristic aroma, taste and health benefits.Mastic collection starts usually mid August, with the work starting again very early in the morning. The larger pieces are collected (along with dust, tree leaves and small stones) from the ground. They are spread in large wooden pans and taken in to the growers house to be stored in a dry and cool place. The cleaning of mastic is a laborious task which starts November. Usually the family participates and the cleaning process lasts throughout the winter period. Mastic is washed and then the larger pieces are manually cleaned one by one with a small pointed knife.

  • Mastiha gum, Masticha, mastica, mastix or mastixa.mastic gum is unique in the world! Real mastic is only produced in the south part of Chios Island. It comes from the mastic tree. Chios gum Masticha is hand cleaned piece by piece. It is rare and unique, full of miraculous properties that made Hios mastic gum so much sought after.
  • Mastiha gradually loses its colour and after a long time it can appear yellowish or even yellow, something which is clearly due to its oxidation. Keeping it refrigerated (ideally) can slow down this process. But even when oxidized, it is absolutely safe despite being degraded.
  • The best mastiha for chewing is a combination of hard and soft tears that prevent it from being sticky on the teeth and make it agreeably chewable. It needs patience, though, because at the beginning the sensation is unusual and the taste rather bitter.
  • The summer months Mastic should be preserved either in a fridge, or in a very cool place where temperatures do not exceed 18ο C (64ο F).The mastic if exposed to high temperatures will stick together and become one lump, because the mastic is 100% natural mastic without any other additives.
  • If the mastic sticks and becomes one lump it does not lose any of its beneficial properties, or its taste..In this case,If the mastic is very much stuck (if it has been exposed to high temperature) then you might have to put it in a deep freezer for a few hours and then while it is still frozen break it into pieces and kept in the refrigerator.

Product description

«Chios Mastiha: A tear that pleases, perfumes, relieves, heals!» Chios Mastiha is the name of a resinous sap produced from the mastic tree (Pistacia Lentiscus var. Chia). It is a natural, aromatic resin in teardrop shape, falling on the ground in drops from superficial scratches induced by cultivators on the tree's trunk and main branches with sharp tools. As it drips, this sap appears as a sticky and translucent liquid which, 15-20 days later, is solidified into irregular shapes influenced by the area's weather conditions in summertime, that is intense drought and sunlight. After being solidified, it has a crystal form, while its rather bitter taste quickly subsides to leave a distinctive aroma that really makes it unique. That solid product is then harvested and washed by mastic growers, giving us finally the natural Chios mastiha. Its colour is initially ivory-like but as time goes by, that shade is lost and 12 to 18 months later it changes into yellowish due to oxidation. It is made of hundreds of components, among which only 80 are contained in identifiable quantities. Such multitude probably justifies the multiple uses of Chios mastiha, in the fields of food industry, health and cosmetic care, worldwide. Chios Mastiha is a unique product with many beneficial qualities and wide- ranging uses since antiquity. Nowadays, it is used in pharmaceuticals, perfumes, cosmetics, beverages, bakery goods, sweets as well as in cooking. Chios Mastiha is the natural resin of Pistacia lentiscus var. Chia, a tree which grows only on the Aegean island of Chios, Greece. Scientific research shows that Chios Mastiha has anti- microbial, anti- inflammatory, and healing activity. Also, it has beneficial effects on both body hygiene and skin care. You can use mastic as ordinary chewing gum, or you can grind it into powder and use it as a natural medicine for peptic ulcers and general for stomach disorders.

Question: Is this gum very hard and tough
Answer: Hi New York! I reached out to the manufacturer and here is their reply: Each capsule contains 500 mg of Mastic Extract, created from Mastic Resin sourced from the Mastic tree (Pistacia lentiscus). Mastic / Mastic Resin is the English common name of the sap or resin that comes from the tree. It is also sometimes called Yemen Gum and Arabic Gum (not to be confused with Gum Arabic, another very common food additive). In Greece, it is called Tears of Chios, after the Greek island of Chios where the tree grows, and because the resin drips out of the tree and hangs, resembling a crystalline teardrop. Mastic trees also grow and in parts of Turkey. Solaray Mastic Extract is created through an ethanol extraction process of wildcrafted, sustainably harvested Mastic Resin from Greece and Turkey. Through the extraction process, the Mastic Acids and Masticoresin are concentrated such that each 2 capsule serving (1g extract) provides 35% or 350mg of Mastic Acids and Masticoresin. Hope this helps and thanks for considering Solaray!

Question: How mang Grams ae in each piece of gum ? How many can you chew a day
Answer: One pack (2.9 g) has two pieces.8 calories per serving; 0 fat; 0 sodium; 0 protein; carbs (sugar) 2 g; If you chew 20 packets a day it is only 160 calories and 40 g carbs and keeps you from eating many more calories and carbs! It also tastes great but it is an acquired taste!
Question: Expiration date? I see where it says" best before,"but there isnt a date
Answer: I have been chewing this gum for years and never thought to investigate an expiration date. If you know how much you use over a period of time. I would order only enough to cover that period. I assume the shipments via Amazon represent new product.

Answer: I didn’t have a chance to chew or spit out. There was a human hair attached to the piece I put in my mouth. It was about 14 inches long and needless to say it all went into garbage. If that didn’t happen to me, I would not have swallowed it anyway. What happened to hairnets in the factory. I never got so much as an apology from seller.
