13 best matcha powders

Matcha is a finely ground green tea powder made from shade-grown tea leaves. It has a long history in Japanese culture and is known for its vibrant green color and unique flavor profile. Here's some information about matcha powder:

  1. Production: Matcha is made from tea leaves that are grown under shade for several weeks before harvesting. This shading process increases chlorophyll levels in the leaves, giving matcha its bright green color. After harvesting, the leaves are steamed, dried, and ground into a fine powder.

  2. Ceremonial Grade vs. Culinary Grade: Matcha is categorized into different grades, with ceremonial grade being the highest quality. Ceremonial grade matcha is typically used in traditional Japanese tea ceremonies and has a sweeter, more delicate flavor. Culinary grade matcha is used in cooking and baking and has a slightly stronger, more bitter taste.

  3. Health Benefits: Matcha is often touted for its health benefits. It is rich in antioxidants, particularly catechins, which are believed to have various health-promoting properties, including improved heart health and potential cancer prevention.

  4. Caffeine Content: Matcha contains caffeine, which can provide an energy boost. However, it also contains L-theanine, an amino acid that can promote a calm, alert state of mind. This combination is said to create a sustained energy without the jitters often associated with caffeine.

  5. Preparation: To make matcha tea, you whisk the powder with hot water until it becomes frothy. The traditional method uses a bamboo whisk called a "chasen." Matcha can also be used in various recipes, including lattes, smoothies, and desserts.

  6. Flavor: Matcha has a unique, earthy, and slightly bitter taste. The flavor can vary depending on the grade and source of the matcha. Ceremonial grade matcha tends to have a sweeter and milder flavor, while culinary grade matcha is more robust.

  7. Color and Appearance: Matcha is known for its vibrant green color. The color can be an indicator of quality, with brighter green shades generally associated with higher-quality matcha.

  8. Storage: Matcha should be stored in an airtight container away from light and heat to preserve its freshness and flavor. Proper storage is essential to prevent it from becoming stale or losing its vibrant color.

  9. Uses: Besides traditional tea, matcha can be used in various recipes. It's a popular ingredient in green tea lattes, smoothie bowls, ice cream, and even savory dishes like matcha-infused pasta or salad dressings.

  10. Cultural Significance: Matcha has deep cultural roots in Japan and is often associated with Zen Buddhism. Traditional tea ceremonies, such as the Chanoyu, emphasize the preparation and consumption of matcha as a form of meditation and appreciation of aesthetics.

In summary, matcha powder is a unique and versatile green tea product known for its vibrant color, health benefits, and cultural significance, often used in various beverages and culinary creations.

User questions & answers

Question: Does this have caffeine in it? Thanks
Answer: Yes it does! Each half-teaspoon (1 gram) serving of Matcha contains roughly 25-35mg of caffeine, which is approximately one-third the caffeine of a cup of brewed coffee. Matcha is easily tolerated by many people for whom coffee makes them jittery because all of the other components that make up Matcha in effect slow down the release of caffeine into the body. It typically takes a good three to six hours for this minimal amount of caffeine to be absorbed into the bloodstream, and yet the mindfulness effects are apparent almost immediately upon drinking it.In other words, Matcha doesn't make you feel jittery or wired like coffee can tend to -- it can actually help you relax.Great question Yani - thanks so much for writing in! Question: Is it sweetened
Answer: No, there is absolutely nothing added...each bag contains 100% USDA Organic, all natural, stone ground matcha green tea powder :) You can certainly sweeten it up though with the sweetener of your choice! Many of our customers prefer it that way in their lattes and smoothies.Great question Larissa - thanks so much for writing in! Question: What is the difference from cafe grade and ceremonial grade matcha
Answer: Cafe grade is the worst kind. It is poor in color, taste, and nutrients. It is not meant for drinking, cooking only. -Mei Leaf Expert You Tube Channel
Question: Has it been tested for radiation
Answer: Absolutely -- our partner farm conducts regular lab tests on the soil, water, and plants to ensure our Matcha is 100% safe to consume, in addition to lab tests performed on the final product that we import (ensuring that not only is there no radiation concern, but also that no heavy metals or other contaminants are present). Product safety is the most important issue for Jade Leaf Organics, and we take every precaution to ensure it. The Uji, Kyoto region where our Matcha is sourced is very far south of the site of the Fukushima incident in 2011, one of the furthest growing regions from the location of the incident, and detailed soil and plant analyses conducted even the year of the disaster showed no signs of radiation contamination. To be clear, our growing region was NEVER affected by the incident. Now, 4 years later, Japan has since lifted all restrictions on crops (even ones grown near Fukushima). By Hiroshi Family Farms

Our family farms have been growing the highest quality, premium Matcha Tea since the 13th Century. Most people don’t know this, but it’s true. Matcha Green Tea originated in the high mountains of China and not Japan. Japanese Matcha Tea is a relatively new phenomena.

Certified Organic Matcha.

Hunan district is the birthplace of tea in China. Jishin Shounin, high priest of Kaijuusen Temple, introduced tea tree seeds from China to Wazuka, Uji District in the 13th century. The tea cultivated here was the first official tea of the Imperial Palace.

It was here that MatchaDNA personally selected Hiroshi, a local family tea farmer to provide exclusive organic Matcha green tea from his Estate to MatchaDNA.This tea is carefully harvested for MatchaDNA exclusively by Hiroshi, his brother and wife. Our family farm is at a high altitude, away from chemical usage on lower grown tea gardens.

MatchaDNA Matcha tea is Culinary Grade – the very highest quality of culinary grade Matcha green tea in China or Japan.

Hiroshi has a reputation of being a maverick tea cultivator using secret family organic compost comprised of local herring and tea tree trimmings to produce the finest tasting green tea without any chemicals. Fewer than 10% of China’s tea gardens are certified organic. All of this exclusive organic Matcha is harvested for MatchaDNA.

Highest Potency, Over 10x Antioxidants Of Brewed Green Tea

This tea is grown under the shade of blanket canopies forcing the tender leaves to produce a deep, dark color fortified with flavor and nutrients.

Only the new leaves are picked from the top of the bush, and must be harvested within 45 minutes before the sun can lighten the color of the leaves.

MatchaDNA Matcha is a prized, naturally dark green color. Drinking fresh Matcha is like taking a multivitamin super-food filled with antioxidants, B-complex, Vitamins C, B1, B2 E, beta carotene, iron, calcium and amino acids to support a healthy body.

  • Delicious Refreshments: Try our delicious, refreshing teas if you enjoy easy bottled teas on-the-go. We offer unique traditional loose leaf teas, tea bags, matcha, matcha powder & more

User questions & answers

Question: What recipes do you use this in
Answer: The package I got was the 1 lb for around $20. I think the other, smaller sized one you are speaking of might be the Ceremonial grade. The tea in the 1 lb package is more of a Culinary grade, meaning that it is not as delicate-tasting as the Ceremonial, and is more suited for use in food. However, having said that, I also find it has a perfectly lovely taste for drinking, as well. I really love Matcha DNA, I have been buying this brand for several years now, and am very happy with it.
Question: Is this matcha organic? What is the country of origin (where the tea was grown
Answer: Yes it is keto friendly. This contains only 100% Pure USDA Certified Organic Matcha, nothing else.
Question: From what Japanese region is this? Is it certified lead/metal and radioactive free? Is it organic
Answer: 1/2 tsp usually has about 30-40 mg of caffeine (less than a soda) but tea also has L-theanine which is an amino acid and it’s sorta the yin/yang to the caffeine which is why you don’t get the coffee jitters from the caffeine.
Question: Isn't this culinary matcha from the shizuoka region that is close to fukushima where the disaster happened? is it tested for radiation before sold
Answer: No sweeteners!! 100% Pure USDA Certified Organic Matcha!

Delicious Japanese matcha from different tea growing-regions of Japan

The Naoki Matcha difference

We focus on flavor first. Thanks to the amino acids present in high quality matcha, matcha can have a wide range of flavors ranging from bittersweet to nutty and savoury. We offer several matcha blends from different tea regions of Japan so you can experience this diversity of flavors. We do our utmost to ensure that you enjoy consuming our matcha, and are only an email message away if you need any help or guidance.

Since our humble beginnings, we have built a respectable network of contacts comprising tea estates, factories and tea masters all over Japan. This lets us offer all kinds of matcha tailored to your various tastes and preferences.

Trusted partners, real relationships

It’s becoming much easier to find a tea supplier in Japan these days, but that does not mean you necessarily get good value. The problem today is separating the good from the mediocre, and we leave no stone unturned in finding reliable partners to help us grow the market for authentic, good quality Japanese matcha.

Always 100% safe for consumption

We take food safety extremely seriously. This means strict vetting of farms and manufacturers we work with and ensuring that they comply with all Japanese agricultural regulations. It also means regular third party lab testing for reassurance. All tests for radiation and heavy metals are consistently negative.

How to choose matcha

Choosing from one from a few matcha blends may be daunting. Please let us help.

  • If you're new to matcha - start with either our Superior Ceremonial Blend or Organic Ceremonial Blend if you prefer an organic product. They are beginner-friendly blends that provide versatility and a great taste.
  • The Superior Ceremonial Blend or Organic Ceremonial Blend matcha also serve as excellent choices for a daily matcha.
  • For an enjoyable matcha tea, try our Fragrant Yame Blend. It's sweetness and smooth texture will make for a pleasing experience. If you are an advanced matcha enthusiast, do also consider try our Master's Collection matcha. Our favourite is the Masters Collection Chiran Harvest matcha.
  • If you intend to drink matcha as a caffeinated pick-me-up for sleepy afternoons, why not try it as a cold brew. That simply means cold water and matcha mixed together. All our blends work well for this, but our Cold Brew Jade Blend is our mildest, lightest matcha and was made specially for this purpose.

Slow down and unwind with Usucha (traditional Japanese matcha tea)

Enjoy the classic frothy thin tea ("usucha") at home.

Use 1 tsp (2 grams) of matcha along with 3 oz of 175 degree F water.

Best made using a bamboo whisk.

The best way to make Matcha Latte (hot or iced) every morning

Create the base "matcha shot" with 1.5 tsp (3 grams) of matcha and 1 oz of water.

Mix vigorously until there are no more clumps. Add 6 oz of your favourite milk and add sweetener to taste.

This formula works for both hot and cold matcha lattes

How to make an easy Cold Brew Matcha for better energy

Add 1 tsp (2 grams) of matcha to 8 oz of cold water and mix. Adjust the amount of water according to your personal preference.

We easily make cold brew matcha at home and at work using bottles.

All you need to do is add matcha and water to a bottle and shake it up until the matcha is evenly mixed. Try this with coconut water instead of water for a real treat.

Understanding matcha

Matcha is made from shade-grown tea leaves that is milled into a fine powder. The final taste of matcha depends on a tea master who will select different tea leaves for their taste attributes.

The tea master “blends” these leaves together to accentuate certain flavors so that he can achieve a final result that the customer will find enjoyable.

User questions & answers

Question: How many servings in the 17.5 oz bag
Answer: Hi there, Not to fear, there is no other ingredient in it other than ground tea leaves in all our matcha. The reason why matcha is called a blend is because each tea plant has its own unique flavors and aromas. Different leaves from different tea plants (or different cultivars) are blended together to produce a unique taste. The tea master decides on a desired taste and "blends" the proportion of tea leaves from various plants/harvests to achieve the desired flavors and consistency. Regards, Naoki Matcha
Question: What grade/color is the matcha powder
Answer: Hey there! We provide 40% more matcha powder than the standard size provided by other brands, so you can expect about 35-40 servings per Naoki Matcha can. However, it also depends on how you consume it, if you use twice the recommended grams per serving (it's 1 gram per serving usually), then a can will last you 20 servings instead.HiroNaoki Matcha
Question: Are there nutrition facts
Answer: Hi Lee, it is made out of pure matcha (high-grade green tea powder), grown under special conditions for 30 days before being harvested and ground. This ceremonial grade is specifically made for consumption. Try it out!
Question: Is there an ingredient list for this
Answer: Hi there! Our matcha is tested regularly (To ensure safety) by a 3rd-Party New Zealand Laboratory for pesticides and have no suspicious results was observed. Similarly, the matcha is also tested for heavy metals such as Cadmium, Arsenic, Lead and Mecury with no observed suspicious result.

User questions & answers

Question: does it keep you awake at night if you drink it late in the evening ? thanks for your time n your input
Answer: The bag states that 1 serving size is 1 teaspoon (5g) and that the servings per package are 100. I don't think that is realistic. If you use the Matcha Latte recipe on the bag it states to use 3 teaspoons which would give you 33 Latte's per bag.Hope this helps you out!..
Question: What is source of sweetener in love matcha
Answer: Bright green powder, Matcha Tencha that is stoneground immediately before shipping is called Matcha. Dark Matcha (Koicha) is used in Japan's traditional tea ceremony, and was previously made from the leaves of very old tea bushes - over 100 years old. In recent times, cultivar varieties suited to Koicha have been selected, while soil fertility management techniques and covered culture methods have been developed to provide the best tea for Koicha. Matcha is also used extensively in the making of traditional Japanese confections and various savory dishes. Another unique feature of Matcha is that unlike Sencha and other teas, when one drinks Matcha the leaf is fully consumed
Question: is it kosher
Answer: Dear S. Beilstein Here is the Information that you requested. Caffeine Content: Approximately The caffeine content is 35-70mgs. The caffeine content can vary slightly depending on the type and quality of Matcha used. So if we are talking 1 serving of matcha which is 1 gram or about 1/2 tsp, this will give you approx 72 mg of the EGCG catechin, matcha’s main antioxidant. And a total catechin content of about 110 to 140 mg per gram. FDA suggests 210mg is a recommended amount of EGCG on a daily basis. EGCG only comes from tea by the way. Matcha does contain other antioxidants like Vitamin C and E, but i have not seen an actual antioxidant daily recommendation. I’d suggest 1 to 2 cups a day of a high quality matcha will give you a decent amount of antioxidants to fight all those free radicals. Personally, I drink 2 cups a day, I dont get sick, and never see a doctor. Question: does tis contain lead or contaminates since its grown in china? is there any test results to prove this? thanks
Answer: 1) ALL true Matcha is from Japan, as it’s traditional uses started ceremonially (This brand is, it states it on package) 2) Frankly, it doesn’t matter where it’s from, just that it is derived from matcha tea leaves 3) Someone that doesn’t know shouldn’t answer. Neither should you listen to the uninformed. (Or someone that can’t read the package)

BY HIROSHI FAMILY FARMS.

Our family farms have been growing the highest quality, premium Matcha Tea since the 13th Century. Most people don’t know this, but it’s true. Matcha Green Tea originated in the high mountains of China and not Japan. Japanese Matcha Tea is a relatively new phenomena.

CERTIFIED ORGANIC MATCHA

Hunan district is the birthplace of tea in China. Jishin Shounin, high priest of Kaijuusen Temple, introduced tea tree seeds from China to Wazuka, Uji District in the 13th century. The tea cultivated here was the first official tea of the Imperial Palace.

It was here that MatchaDNA personally selected Hiroshi, a local family tea farmer to provide exclusive organic Matcha green tea from his Estate to MatchaDNA. This tea is carefully harvested for MatchaDNA exclusively by Hiroshi, his brother and wife. Our family farm is at a high altitude, away from chemical usage on lower grown tea gardens.

MATCHA FROM A PURE SOURCE

Our Matcha is tested for maximum purity. Each batch of tea leaves is hand picked and may have some variances so we show ranges.

CLEAN & HONEST INGREDIENTS

All of our small scale sustainable farms are USDA ORGANIC CERTIFIED. We insure that our teas are 100% FREE from any pesticides, herbicides or other harmful substances.

SAFE & PURE ORIGIN

Your safety is our priority. You are drinking the best Matcha tea in the world for better health. The last thing you want is lead or radiation. That is why we make sure our products are regularly tested for both.

User questions & answers

Question: Can you make macarons with this
Answer: This bag contains roughly 10oz of powdered matcha (it takes up almost all of the bag's interior space, using the last bag I received as a point of reference). I've spoken with people who do make tea out of it and enjoy it at least as much as other varieties of matcha, including "ceremonial grade" matcha, but I use it exclusively for smoothies, as my interest is less about the pomp and circumstance of tea ceremonies and more about the prospective health benefits.
Question: Where can I get the probiotics matcha
Answer: there is about 34 mg of caffeine in each teaspoon of Matcha tea powder.
Question: What is the caffeine content
Answer: Organic Ceremonial Matcha is made especially for the traditional Japanese and Chinese tea ceremonies. It is supposed to be the best grade so that it is suitable for the cultural ceremonies.
Question: does it taste like the starbucks latte green tea ??? or something different
Answer: Each batch of MatchaDNA matcha green tea powder is tested for Lead and other heavy metals by an independent 3rd party laboratory called Eurofins to ensure the high standards we require on our teas. Our teas are also USDA Certified Organic and packaged in Certified BPA-Free foil bags.

Farm Direct Organic Matcha from Japan

Matcha is produced across Japan, but we've found the very best organic matcha to be ground from tea leaves grown in the Uji and Kagoshima regions. Family-owned partner farms fuse traditional and modern techniques to cultivate leaves brimming with flavor and nutrients.

100% USDA Organic

True, authentic Japanese matcha that is certified organic is still in extremely scarce supply (less than 1% of Japanese tea farms are certified!) — and we have been carefully forming partnerships with the preeminent farms to be able to supply the best quality organic matcha for fair value.

Lab Tested for Integrity

We test our products both at the farms where they are grown, as well as by third party laboratories here in the U.S. Our quality standards were developed through a combination of state and federal guidelines as well as consultation with scientific research and analysis.

Cafe Style Sweetened Matcha Latte Mix

Up to now, latte mixes we were finding at the grocery store were all full of weird emulsifiers and artificial ingredients. We believe all a latte truly needs is good quality matcha and a little sweetness, to which you add your own fresh milk (whichever kind you like!). So we kept our mix that simple, just two ingredients: organic matcha and organic, unrefined cane sugar. Nothing else added.

  • USDA Organic
  • Dairy Free, Gluten-Free, GMO-Free
  • Mixes easily
  • Lightly sweet and delicious!

Hot Matcha Lattes

Whisk or shake 2 tsp of mix with 2oz of cool water, then pour into 6-10oz of hot frothed milk (plant based or dairy).

Iced Matcha Lattes

Whisk or shake 2 tsp of mix with 2oz of cool water, then pour over 6-10oz of iced milk (plant based or dairy).

Matcha Frappes

Add 1 to 2 tbsp of mix to a blender with ice and half and half for a creamy treat! Get creative and add over a fruity base, like this popular strawberry "pink drink".

Our Promise to You

1) To provide premium quality, authentic Japanese organic matcha at a fair value.

2) To continue to improve our quality with each year's harvest, and innovate on new delicious, healthy blends and formats to enjoy matcha.

3) To stand by our products and honor our customers. If you don't have a good experience, just let us know and we'll make it right.

ABOUT MATCHA

WHAT IS MATCHA

Matcha is an ancient form of green tea unique to Japan and China. Instead of throwing out the leaves once the tea is brewed, Matcha is made from the whole green tea leaf, which is specially grown and ground into a finely-powdered form.

MATCHA ORIGIN

Matcha tea has a long history that dates back as far as the 11th century in Japan. It is thought that a Zen Monk by the name of Eisai brought green tea seeds from China and began planting the tea in monasteries. Believing the tea leaves had the ability to promote longevity and to cure certain ailments, Eisai would crush the leaves into a rough powder and drink them blended in water. This first form of matcha tea was considered a precious medicine and was only consumed by a select few. This matcha comes from China.

CAFFEINE CONTENT

Unlike other teas, which use tea bags or tea leaves that are removed from the hot water after steeping, matcha preparation involves consuming the ground tea leaves themselves. Because you are ingesting the entire green tea leaf, the caffeine content is much greater than green tea that is steeped.

On average, Matcha contains less than half the amount of caffeine per cup than in a similar-sized cup of coffee.

NATURAL BITTER TASTE

Not all people fell in love with matcha taste from the first sight. It’s the same experience as with coffee and tea- you begin to love it after few cups! Most people after drinking it for a few days start to crave the nutritious flavor of matcha. There are many variations of matcha. Each person needs to find his matcha match that meets his expectations.

Making latte, frappe, adding it to your favorite smoothie or baking goods is an excellent way to become accustomed to a new taste.

User questions & answers

Question: Can’t even put a review
Answer: None, just pure Matcha Green Tea powder, to the best of my knowledge. It is quite strong, and concentrated, so perhaps you should reduce the amount you use in each beverage.
Question: Hi. Is there fat , sugar and carbohydrates in the powder
Answer: Hello, It is from China. Thank you.
Question: When will the Ceremonial Grade matcha be available
Answer: No, just Pure Matcha Green Tea. It is quite strong, and concentrated so you will not need to use much to make a green tea beverage. I add Stevia, Sucralose/Splenda, or sometimes Honey to add sweetness. The seller has some recipes listed on the product page. Good Luck!

Answer: Yes
