11 best digital tv recorders

Digital TV recorders, also known as DVRs (Digital Video Recorders), are devices used to record and store television content for later viewing. While they are primarily associated with recording TV shows, they can also have applications in surveillance video equipment and security surveillance systems.

Here are some key points about digital TV recorders in relation to surveillance and security:

  1. Recording Capabilities: DVRs are equipped with one or more tuners that allow them to receive and record digital TV broadcasts. They can record TV programs, movies, and even live events.

  2. Storage: DVRs come with internal hard drives that vary in capacity. The recorded content is stored on these drives, and the amount of storage determines how many hours of video can be recorded.

  3. Playback: Users can playback recorded content at their convenience. DVRs often offer features like pause, rewind, fast forward, and the ability to schedule recordings.

  4. Live TV Pause and Rewind: DVRs usually allow users to pause and rewind live TV, so they can catch up on missed content in real-time.

  5. Series Recording: Many DVRs offer the option to set up recurring recordings for specific TV series, making it easy to follow your favorite shows.

  6. Remote Viewing: Some DVRs have network capabilities that allow users to access recorded content remotely. This can be useful for surveillance purposes, as it enables remote monitoring of security cameras.

  7. Security Surveillance Integration: In the context of security surveillance, DVRs can be used to record footage from security cameras. They are commonly used in closed-circuit television (CCTV) systems. These systems are employed for monitoring and recording activities in homes, businesses, and public spaces.

  8. Compression: DVRs typically use video compression techniques to maximize storage capacity. Common video compression formats include H.264 and H.265.

  9. Motion Detection: Security DVRs often come with motion detection features. This means they can start recording when they detect movement in the camera's field of view, conserving storage space and making it easier to review relevant footage.

  10. Playback Search: Users can search recorded footage based on time and date, making it easy to find specific events or incidents.

  11. Remote Control: Many DVRs come with remote control units, allowing users to navigate menus and control playback from a distance.

  12. Multi-Channel Recording: Some DVRs can record multiple channels simultaneously, making them suitable for security applications with multiple cameras.

Overall, digital TV recorders have evolved to offer versatile recording and playback functionality, and they are commonly used not only for personal entertainment but also for security and surveillance purposes. Their ability to store and retrieve video footage makes them a valuable tool in various settings.

User questions & answers

Question: So, it's a Tivo
Answer: No. There is a reason the Fire TV Recast (this product) does not have an HDMI in/out port, a Cable CARD port or many of the additional ports which a TiVo has. TiVo devices have a slot in the back for a cable card which you can get from your provider. This allows for unscrambling of whatever service they provide per their agreement with you which may include package lineups like Disney (not included in Hulu), sports, science and movies. TiVo previously had an agreement with Comcast/Xfinity allowing users in some markets to access their OnDemand though not any longer. Depending on which TiVo device you purchase they have different storage sizes and numbers of tuners which you can then pair with TiVo minis for other TVs to access and control the DVR. Tuner number determines how many shows can be recorded at the same time on ANY model of DVR. If you have 6 tuners for example like my TiVo has, you can record 6 shows at the same time. You cannot watch a 7th show but you can watch any of the 6 being recorded. Having a mini attached takes up a tuner space so I have one mini meaning my DVR can only record 5 shows at the same time. TiVo uses all of the common apps ranging from Hulu, Netflix and Amazon Prime Video through YouTube (and more) for you to search in addition to your cable or OTA TV connection. It can ONLY record from your cable or OTA connection and does not support satellite providers. You can view your DVR contents from your mobile device at any time. There is a monthly fee just for the TiVo service - for each box/mini you have unless you opt to pay the lifetime fee. This covers maintenance (which this Amazon box does not have). Notice that, as I said, the Amazon Fire Recast has no HDMI port. That's because it's only compatible with an Amazon Fire TV! If Your TV is not an Amazon Fire TV you have to purchase an Amazon Fire Stick just to use this! This device comes in a limited storage and tuner size while you can get a large TiVo and even expand upon that yourself if you need to. I did! Having a cable card slot on a TiVo might not seem like much of you are a cord cutter, we don't have any TV service anymore, but when we did it saved us about $30 monthly in rental fees for 2 boxes from our provider about 2 years ago. Prime Video does have a lot of content but it's easy to burn through and let's all be honest: this device relies heavily on other apps to provide content Netflix, Hulu, Philo, Sling, etc are all where we go! This device does NOT record from these apps. Keep in mind as well: if you buy the 2 tuner option you can record 2 shows and that is all. You cannot watch another show. If you buy another Fire Stick for a different TV, that takes up a tuner space. The Amazon box is a more expensive, limited featured, small storage OTA box. TiVo has been around for many years and their boxes have more features which are all compatible with TVs instead of "Amazon Fire".
Question: What do I have to have/do (equipment-wise) to have a setup that has live and pre-taped shows to get close to what cable provides
Answer: So for the TL/DR: Antenna, DVR, a few RG-6 cables, and TV, depending on your set up and location booster, splitter, terminators, and more RG-6 cables. The hard part to answer your question is what kind of cable TV do you have: how many channels can you watch and record at once? do you have premium channels like Bravo, HBO, or other cable-only channels? and how many TVs is it hooked to? First thing to understand is that not all cable channels are also broadcast OTA (over the air) AND not all OTA channels are available in all areas. I would first do an internet search of something like antennaweb.org or just google for what OTA channels are available in my area. Second part is the Antenna, you will need a good antenna and the choices are too numerous and application-specific (indoor, outdoor, directional, omnidirectional as a few examples) and you may need a booster depending on your location from the transmitting towers and splitters depending on how many devices you will be watching or recording the OTA channels on. You will need cable, Typically RG-6, to run from antenna to signal booster, to device and/or TVs. If you are using a really old TV or computer to watch you will also need a digital tuner (this is sort of rare case, so probably not). To record TV shows you will need a DVR (digital video recorder) and most have built-in storage with the option to expand onto some kind of external storage device this is where you get the limit of how many hours you can keep. The number of show you can watch and record at one time is limited by the number of tuners, most TV after around 2007 have at least one digital tuner built in, so you can use a splitter and run one cable from your antenna to your DVR and another cable to your TV allowing you to watch one show while your DVR records as many shows at one time as it has built-in tuners. The recast has a 2 tuner and a 4 tuner model. So using the above example you could watch one TV show live and record an additional 2 or 4 at the same time. If you use a 4-way splitter and only use 3 of the 4 splitters you will also need terminators or plugs, think of it as an open water faucet, you don't want any open holes in your lines. Each DVR has it's own kind of output type, my Tivo has HDMI, the recast use wifi to transmit to other fire capable products, and some rare and older ones will output to RG-6 meaning if your TV only has one RG-6 input you will HAVE to use that to connect your TV to your DVR to watch what is on your DVR. So OTA DVRs get their signals from the RG-6 and depending on make, model, and design can have one or multiple of several different output options to send it to your TV.
Question: Will Amazon make improvements and fix issues via updates on this device or should I wait on the next generation
Answer: Someone has commented about a possible SW or Firmware fix for ATSC 3.0. I doubt this is possible since it would involve new hardware, yet, all of those TVs we have, will now require a CONVERTER BOX to operate. I doubt they would have a converter box for this RECAST. Mine arrived today (10-2020) but I believe it will be EOL as the ATSC 3.0 standard becomes more readily available. I am looking for specs now. If anyone knows, please share! PS. Probably worth 2-3 years of free TV to me...Looking for a hardware version now (after I plug it in and get it rolling).
Question: What is the highest recording and playback resolution? 720p, 1080i, 4k uhd
Answer: The key problem is that the resolution is not consistent during playback. When there is a lot of action on the screen, for some reason the Recast scales down the resolution to an unwatchable 360p. Rewinding and re-watching can sometimes help, but not always. This is over a high-bandwidth wifi router. I can stream in any 4k show from the internet to my Firestick with no resolution issues, but the Recast is somehow unable to transmit at full 720p resolution on my own network! Hardwiring does not resolve the issue - it must be some overly cautious internal bandwidth limitation. I would love for Amazon to resolve this, because otherwise the recast is good!

User questions & answers

Question: Anyone have any issues with their recording schedules disappearing? Mine wiped all my schedules
Answer: Ok I don't have this model but I have another model by same company (HW-150pvr) and it is dumping schedules too. I've had two units over 4 years and it's happened in the past but happening a lot more now. I'm on Amazon to find a replacement because this is unacceptable. I'm thinking Mediasonic is to be avoided.
Question: Hi folks what external hard drive do you use with this? Thanks lynn
Answer: I used a 500GB salvaged out of an old laptop that was totally dead. I ordered a cheap $7.99 ORICO USB3.0 to SATA III 2.5" External Hard Drive Enclosure from Amazon as well to mount it in. Worked perfectly. I've also used a cheap (free) 32GB USB thumb drive that I didn't have any problem with. Got that thumb drive free from a Microcenter computer store.
Question: Es japones - *brasileño
Answer: Hecho en Canada
Question: Can you program the remote to control your TV
Answer: Read the manual friend. The remote does control (it can, in the settings) the TV.

User questions & answers

Question: My network is hardwired. i do not have wifi. will the tablo work without wifi and connected only to a hardwire network
Answer: If your TV is WiFi capable, Tablo should broadcast a WiFi signal of its own, like Tablo_XXXX, when hardwired to your modem. You would need the Tablo App. If your TV is not WiFi, then you may be able to flow it through your TV by connecting the USB from Tablo to the TV.
Question: Will the unit power an external hd, not a usb stick
Answer: Lifetime subscriber using a 1 TB external USB Toshiba drive (self powered, no power cord) for many years without any issues. Would purchase again.
Question: tcl roku 4k tvs, one 1080p with a roku and a samsung 1080p smart tv. i'll need to use wifi 2 attach the tablo. how well will the tablo work
Answer: We have had our Tablo Quad for a couple months now. We also have four TV's hooked up to the internet and we have never had any issues and we have crappy internet. We can record most of our must have shows on the Tablo so we don't have to load up the Roku. We don't pay for the guide and it hasn't been a problem. I would highly recommend it
Question: What are the restrictions if you don't subscribe to the guide service
Answer: My premium trial subscription expired about a month ago so I thought I give the non-subscription Tablo a try. Here are my observations and opinions of the non-subscription after a month of using it. It is usable, especially if you don't do a lot of searches for new material. There is no search facility. There is no automatic time extensions of live events like football games, etc.. So, you have to manually add some estimated time in your manual record setup, very similar to the old VCR days. It does not differentiate between repeat episodes and NEW episodes, so you will sometimes end up with shows you've already seen. You can only look 24 hours into the future in the guide. I ended up using one of the online TV guide sites to see farther into the future for programming the show recordings. I find you pretty much need the online TV guide as a companion app. If you don't particularly enjoy a technical challenge of finding shows and typing in with a remote control, then this option probably is not for you. I'm more of a computer geek and find this option a little intriguing. But, for people who just want an easy, very elegant way of finding and recording shows, the premium subscription is definitely worth the money. I suspect someday I'll tire of this manual stuff and dish out the premium dollars. In the grand scheme of things, the $50 per year or $150 lifetime is a fraction of the cost of paying for cable video. Sticking with the non-subscription flavor is pretty much a case of the old English saying, Penny Wise Pound Foolish.

Question: FOX in my area is channel 4 and even with converter box set on channel 3, I still get no reception on channel 4, is this usual
Answer: I am not sure this is the answer however my local FOX is also channel 4. After scanning the local stations available none of them actually display on the box as the local channel number. As example I can enter the actual channel (Channel 4 ) on the remote and it will display as channel 1 on the box but will actually be the correct channel on the TV to watch. I just enter the actual number on the remote. Hope this helped.

Product features

How It Works

The iView 3300STB works by acquiring digital channels coming from ATSC, Over-the-Air, or ClearQAM, unencrypted digital cable transmission. The HD content that comes out allows users to receive unscrambled digital cable signals with the use of a monthly cable provider.

From Analog to Digital

The iView Digital Converter box automatically converts the signal to be compatible with your analog unit. Analog TV owners won't need to get themselves a new TV if they don't want to.

The iView 3300STB has built-in QAM capabilities that allow you to watch unscrambled, unencrypted cable channels and supports Over-the-Air (OTA), which allows the user to receive some unencrypted digital cable channels, also known as "in-the-clear" channels.

Our iView 3300STB has a 3/4 channel switch you can toggle in the back to access analog channels in countries and areas where analog signals are still present. Broadcasting is still alive and well, even in your old TV.

ATSC and QAM Capabilities

OTA (Over-the-Air)

The iView Digital Box works great in ATSC, otherwise known as over-the-air or local channels. Once plugged in, the 3300STB gives you a wider range of channels you can view, with noticeably higher picture clarity. Just connect to your antenna line, scan for channels, and you're ready to go.

QAM Capability

The iView 3300STB comes with QAM, or Quadrature Amplitude Modulation, capability, a format that most cable companies use to transmit and encode their signals.

Our converter boxes are able to pick up ClearQAM channels with a monthly cable provider that offers unscrambled, unencrypted cable.

Watch local OTA channels, unscrambled digital programming and possibly some bonus channels (depending on your location). HD and SD channels become unlocked the moment you plug and successfully setup the iView 3300STB in.

Universal Media Player

The iView 3300STB can act as a universal media player to play videos and music.

To use the media player functions, it is required to connect a USB Flash Drive or External Hard Drive to the box. The drive needs to be no bigger than 4TB in size and formatted to Fat32 or NTFS.

If the storage device has any media already saved on it, those media files can be played on the Iview Box. Selecting “Pictures” will display a slide show of any pictures in JPG, BMP, or PNG format. Selecting “Music” will turn the device into a music player. This music player can play any music files in WMA, MP3, or AAC format. The final option, “Video” will allow playback of any videos in AVI, MKV, MPG, and MKV formats. During video playback, you can press the green SCHD button, on the remote, to cycle between preview and full-screen modes.

DVR Capabilities

Record digital content while you're away with the iView 3300STB.

Connect the box to a USB Flash Drive or External Hard Drive to start recording with DVR. Plug your external drive and record movies and shows to playback later straight to your device.

The DVR function can be done two ways: A recording can start and stop using the red REC and STOP buttons on the remote, respectively, allowing for impromptu recordings at any time. The device can also schedule recordings. From there, the channel, start time, and end time can be set and the box will automatically record and end at the scheduled times. This can also be set to record daily (every day, including weekends), weekly (once a week), or just once. However, the box’s recording functions are limited to one at a time and can only have no more than 30 scheduled recording jobs saved onto the box’s memory.

User questions & answers

Question: how many chanel does the box have
Answer: I was able to pickup 32 channel with a outdoor antenna
Question: how many chanel can iwacth
Answer: As many channels that you can pick up over the air. In the Detroit, MI area, I picked up around 50 channels.
Question: Can you record one channel and watch another channel
Answer: Nope, "what you see is what you get". It can only decode one channel at a time. If you wanted to record & watch a different channel you could do it by buying two converter boxes & have one feeding the TV and another feeding the recorder. (Then hook the recorder to the TV as an AUX input--use 2 audio & 1 video type hook up wire.=available everywhere.) Piece of cake!! OH yeah--get a coax splitter to hook both boxes to your antenna line.
Question: Does this work on an analog TV
Answer: They work great for my older antenna tv's.

User questions & answers

Question: Is there a dvd recorder that you put a blank cd in and it records antenna tv shows like the vhs recorder did
Answer: It records one channel at a tine
Question: Can you record whats on the tv onto a blank dvd? like u could do with a vhs to a vhs tape
Answer: The AverMedia EZ Recorder supports both USB 3.0 and USB 2.0, BTW most any device that supports USB 3.0 is downward compatible with USB 2.0. I use mine with a WD Passport HD that is USB 3.0. AverMedia recommends USB 3.0
Question: Can you watch a pre-recorded video and record an incoming video at the same time
Answer: No, It re-encodes the audio for only two channels in AAC format.
Question: how many gb does the flashdrive needs to be to use in the video recoder
Answer: It should work fine, but what I have found to work best are Samsung micro SD in a USB 3.0 adapter. Makes moving content between the DVR and PC a breeze. I would not recommend the my passport since it is bus powered and the DVR just doesn't provide enough power to power the device and an external drive. The instruction booklet shows that kind of drive but every one I have tried I get an under power error and the DVR shuts down.
