12 best digital radio scanner

A digital radio scanner, also known as a digital scanner or police scanner, is an electronic device used for monitoring and receiving radio communications. These devices are commonly used in the fields of security surveillance, emergency services monitoring, and by hobbyists interested in radio scanning. Here's what you need to know about digital radio scanners:

  1. Radio Scanning: Digital radio scanners are designed to scan various radio frequencies and receive transmissions from different sources. This includes police, fire, emergency services, public safety agencies, aviation, amateur radio, and more.

  2. Analog and Digital: Digital scanners can receive both analog and digital radio signals. Traditional analog signals are still in use, but many agencies have transitioned to digital radio systems for enhanced communication and security. A digital scanner can decode and listen to these digital transmissions.

  3. Trunking Systems: Many modern digital radio systems use trunking technology, which allows multiple users or agencies to share a set of frequencies efficiently. Digital scanners are often equipped with trunking capabilities to follow conversations on these systems.

  4. Programming: Digital scanners require programming to monitor specific frequencies and talk groups.Users can input frequencies manually or use software and databases to update scanner programming. Some scanners also support GPS integration for location-based scanning.

  5. Display and Controls: These scanners typically feature a display screen and various controls for selecting and managing channels, adjusting volume, and configuring settings. The digital display provides information about the currently monitored frequency or talk group.

  6. Recording: Some digital scanners offer recording capabilities, allowing users to capture and save audio from transmissions for later playback or analysis.

  7. Alerts and Notifications: Many digital scanners can be set to provide alerts when specific frequencies or talk groups become active. This is useful for staying informed about important events or communications.

  8. Database Access: Some digital scanners can connect to online databases that provide updated frequency and talk group information for a particular area. This makes it easier for users to program their scanners with the latest data.

  9. Portable and Desktop Models: Digital scanners come in various form factors, including portable handheld models and desktop/base station versions. The choice depends on the user's needs and preferences.

  10. Legal Considerations: It's essential for users to be aware of local laws and regulations regarding the use of digital radio scanners. While listening to most public safety agencies is legal, some jurisdictions have restrictions, especially when it comes to encrypted communications.

Digital radio scanners are valuable tools for staying informed about public safety, emergency services, and other radio communications. They are used by hobbyists, journalists, emergency personnel, and security professionals to monitor and respond to events in real-time. When using a digital scanner, it's important to respect privacy and legal boundaries and use the device responsibly.

Answer: I have the 996P2 with this GPS set but what is missing with Uniden is a Bios update as on MENU look into the GPS and on the current BIOS there is NO RANGE. I live in Raynham,Bristol, Massachusetts and why do I get , in my car a frequency of a city over 20 miles . I want to set the GPS only to 5 miles. You have to pressure Paul from Uniden to update the Bios that you may see in looking for Bios for the 996P2

User questions & answers

Question: I know this might sound stupid, but I am looking to get this for my Husband (a truck driver). What do sidebands do? When would you use this? Just wondering if I should get him this one or the 880... Thanks
Answer: If your husband wants or needs a radio capable of operating on sidebands, this is NOT radio for him. You would need to get the 980 model rather than this 880 model. Normally truckers operate on AM mode rather than sideband. However a few truckers who have Sideband capable radios will use sideband when they get further apart or can't get a good signal on AM. But the majority don't use sideband.
Question: can you use this CB in the house
Answer: Yes. You will require -1) An regulated power supply that converts AC electricity to DC. The voltage you want is a constant 13.8 VDC (not 12 volts, you won't get full power) and which can supply a minimum of 5 amps under load.2) Do NOT press the microphone button until all steps have been completed.3) You will need to mount an external CB antenna at least 9' above the roof line. If you use a mast, it must be guyed every 10' above the last (highest) physical attachement to the house.4) You will need to properly ground the antenna mast to a copper clad ground rod (between 4' and 10' long depending on soil conductivity for your location dry sand: bad: 10' / wet rich soil: excellent: 4')5) You will need to properly ground the chassis of the CB to the exact same point that the mast is grounded to on the grounding rod. This is the step that most radio noobies skip. DON'T skip it.6) It is highly suggested you purchase a ground shunt (static discharge) for your coax; and yes, connect it to the same exact spot on the grounding rod.7) Try and purchase the highest quality 50-ohm coax you can afford. If you can afford Timesmicrowave LMR-400, then that would be your best bet. Try not to use coax more then a few feet longer than you need, and beyond that always allow 2 extra feet for a 'drip loop' at the bottom just before where it comes into the house.8) Wrap the PL-259 connectors with weatherproof coax tape to seal the connections from rain/snow/condensation. If you want to overkill it, then put a shrink wrap tube over the top of the tape.9) Secure the coax GENTLY but securely every 3 feet along the mast. A UV-resistant piece of flexable plastic 2" wide by 6"long wrapped around the coax and the mast (all at once) and secured with UV-resistant tie-wraps would be a good idea.10) Calibrate your 980SSB's internal SWR meter and then check you antenna system SWR to make sure it is less than 1.5:1 (mine is 1.0:1, a perfect match). If required (never use beyond 3:1), 'trim' your antenna to get a better SWR (most don't require trimming).11) Sometimes a CB antenna will require a physical ground plane at the antenna base; but most of the times in a base setup, not.12) Re-read your Uniden BC980SSB manual to make sure nothing has been missed in your setup.
Question: Hello. I am looking to buy this for my husbands 1998 Jeep cherokee XJ..Will this be good for that? And also what other parts are needed
Answer: Hello, yes this is a nice radio that would be fine in that vehicle. With this said, along with the radio you will need the following items:Cigarette lighter 2 wire power cord, magnet mount antenna. These items can be bought on Amazon or you can get them at a truck stop.I recommend Amazon because of a lower price and free shipping and the secret nature of being able to hide your purchase if it's a surprise gift.Truck spec is a cheap brand for the 2 wire power cord and for the antenna I recommend one of the following: K40, Wilson 1000 or the Wilson 3000 magnet mount antennas. Those come with the antenna wire already attached to the magnet and all he would do is run the wire through the hatch or the rear door after mounting the antenna on the roof. It's really easy to do. Just hide the wire under floor mats and beside the seat up to the dashboard to the CB.Now if you are looking for a better radio and easier to use right out of the box, I recommend Galaxy or Connex as these are rock solid and all the knobs are right there on the front of the radio unlike this modern radio with most of the adjustments in menus which made me feel like I had to relearn everything over again. I prefer direct access. This Uniden Bearcat 980 has an annoying beep sound every time you change the channel. Those two other brands of radios I mentioned are more expensive but are what the big boys in my industry use in their big rigs. You should be able to compare the features of the Bearcat 980 with those of a Galaxy or a Connex CB and go on that alone to match up what you want. I read the other two answers you got, Why did they even bother...I hope this helps and as always just ask if you need more info.
Question: I asked if it was 100% new or a refurb and you deleted the question. I am now processing a refund/return on this item. Thanks for being a legit seller
Answer: I ordered and paid for a NEW Bearcat 980SSB from gadget-town and got a refurb/used item. If you check that seller's 100% positive reviews you will find others have had the same experience, yet Amazon has crossed out those reviews and returned the seller's 100% positive rating. Take that as you will.

The Discover It DD 1206 Will Detect:

Why Do I Need This Device?

GSM, Bluetooth, WiFi, and DECT Bugs are commonplace these days. The ability to place these minuscule devices into everyday objects is an immense threat to everyday security and the privacy of an individual. These enable people to listen in on every single sound you make whether you're talking business or personally. These threats are not the work of science fiction they are threats that far more people are susceptible than one would think.

What Makes This Device Better Than Similar Ones?

Most bug detectors out there will detect many of the same frequencies that the 1207 I does, but will not include the low energy transmissions that are produced by Bluetooth and WiFi. Ensuring the safety of your working, professional, or any type of environment is entirely possible with the 1206i. Don't gamble on safety and security, get a detector that will neutralize any possible bug threat.

Product description

The WS1040 is a handheld digital trunking scanner with Motorola P25 Phase I capabilities. The WS1040 features Object Oriented programming which has often been regarded by users as easy to program and use. Virtual Scanner mode stores 21 various scanner configurations for a total storage capacity of over 38,000 scannable objects. Just as their lower end brother models, this offers a dedicated Skywarn button and Spectrum Sweeper - Quickly sweeps the scanner’s frequency ranges for transmissions from nearby sources. Lock out found frequencies and continue searching in the same band. Free-Form Memory Organization - Allocation of memory dynamically and efficiently as it is needed. This differs from low cost and older scanners that had memory organized in rigid and wasteful memory banks

  • Menu Driven Programming with Context Sensitive Help - Each menu item provides a few lines of help text that provide assistance with programming and using the scanner
  • Scan List-functionality allows you to arrange, group and scan objects according to your preference;Lock-out Function
  • Skywarn Storm Spotter Functionality - Instant access to frequencies used by storm spotter networks
  • Digital AGC - Instantly compensates for low user audio levels that are common on digital systems
  • If you pressed the FIRE icon button it is possible that the frequencies pre-programmed in the scanner do not include your area. These Pre-programmed frequencies are generally common Police/Fire frequencies
