11 best motion detector sensor
A motion detector sensor, commonly referred to as a motion sensor or motion detector, is an essential component of many home security systems and electronic devices used in various applications. These sensors are designed to detect movement within a specified area and trigger a response, such as turning on lights, sounding alarms, or recording video footage. Here's what you need to know about motion detector sensors:
Detection Technology: Motion detectors use various technologies to detect motion. The most common types include passive infrared (PIR), microwave, ultrasonic, and dual technology sensors. PIR sensors are among the most widely used and detect changes in infrared radiation caused by moving objects.
Applications: Motion detectors have a wide range of applications beyond security systems. They are used in automatic lighting systems, home automation, energy-saving devices, and even in video game consoles for motion-sensing gameplay.
Security Systems: In home security systems, motion detectors play a crucial role. They can be installed both indoors and outdoors to monitor for unauthorized entry or movement. When motion is detected, they can trigger alarms, send notifications to homeowners or security services, and activate surveillance cameras.
Pet Immunity: Some motion detectors come with pet immunity features, which allow them to differentiate between human-sized movements and those of smaller animals like cats or dogs. This prevents false alarms caused by pets moving around.
Coverage Area: Motion detectors have a defined coverage area or detection range. The range and field of view can vary depending on the specific sensor and its purpose. Some sensors are designed for wide-angle coverage, while others are more narrow and focused.
False Alarms: False alarms can occur if motion detectors are not properly adjusted or if environmental factors like moving curtains or sudden temperature changes trigger the sensor. Proper placement and sensitivity settings can help reduce false alarms.
Battery or Wired: Motion detectors can be powered by batteries or connected to the electrical grid. Battery-powered sensors offer flexibility in placement but require periodic battery replacement. Wired sensors are more permanent but do not rely on batteries.
Integration: Many modern motion detectors can be integrated into smart home systems, allowing homeowners to control and monitor them remotely using smartphones or other devices.
Lighting Control: Motion detectors are commonly used for controlling outdoor and indoor lighting. They can turn lights on when motion is detected and off after a period of inactivity, contributing to energy savings.
Overall, motion detector sensors are a fundamental part of home security systems and are used in various other applications to automate processes, enhance security, and conserve energy. Their reliability and versatility make them valuable components in modern electronic devices and systems.

Question: | Does this come as pictured with the mounting stub or is it just the sensor? Thanks |
Answer: | The white part is a shell for this sensor, and these are packing in one paper box. There is no other case / enclosure. Thanks |
Question: | Can I use two of these in paralled to work one light? I want to mount them on the corners of a garage and turn on one central light |
Answer: | No, you just need remove the cap Here is the picture http://s5.ecpperp.com/flyfun/data/upload/160624/FZ0057-05.jpg |
Question: | Can you disable the dusk to dawn setting |
Answer: | It is 2.54mm pitch on the 3 header pins. Thanks |
Question: | does it come on during the day when detecting motion or just after dark |
Answer: | It's configured with a photo resistor so it doesn't trigger during daylight. In my application I want mine to trigger anytime someone enters the bathroom, so I jumped it out of circuit. If you hold the board with the potentiometers up there is a row of resistors just below them. The one on the right being the photo transistor. The the body is clear, so it can detect light, that makes it easy to spot. It's placement on the opposite side of the board than that of the sensor, kind of makes it worthless. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Does it work in the dark |
Answer: | There is a red led sensor that lights up inside the unit, but it is behind a white mylar window. I've not been able to see it from outside the unit even in the darkest night. Only when the cover is up for testing or adjusting. No one knows it is on my gate pillar where it is hidden. I would definitely recommend this unit. I've had one for 10+ years. |
Question: | Could I use this to power off a fan when triggered. and then have the fan turn back on after motion is not detected |
Answer: | I'm not familiar with that Model but I can tell you that for $29 you can purchase a HT (Baofeng UV-5R) that you can program to receive the signal from the Dakota Alert unit. The Dakota systems use a common VHF signal that you can pickup with any VHF HT its called MURS frequencies - hope this helps. |
Question: | Is there also a light sensor so if you plug in a small LED lamp it will only come on only when the room is fairly dark |
Answer: | No. The 3000 Series and MURS are different units and are not compatible. |
Question: | How is the sensor unit mounted |
Answer: | You can use any brand of VHF high radio if you can set it to the MURS channel(s) and optional tomes of your choice. Ch1 151.820/Ch2 151.880/Ch3 151.940/Ch4 154.570/Ch5 154.600. Channels 1-5 are narrowband on Dakota brand radios. I use BAOFENG UV5R radios, they are programmable and inexpensive. Just be sure to have them programmed correctly to keep it legal. |

User questions & answers
Question: | The photo doesn't show any wires. Will there be wires |
Answer: | JL,Yes....though the photo doesn't show it, there are three wires included in this unit. One goes to the "hot" wire of the circuit, one goes to the neutral of the circuit, and one goes to the load or light you wish to activate. Pretty much any of these replacement sensors are configured this way, although, if you read my review, I do not recommend this one, because of a variety of issues. Rest assured though, for about 3 or 4 dollars more, you can obtain a Heath/Zenith unit, which will work much better. |
Question: | Does it come in white? Mycondo requires matching colors |
Answer: | Yes it does come in white, but I don't have the white version. You can get it through another vendor I think. Thanks! |
Question: | Does it work with regular led lights or only with dimmable leds |
Answer: | This sensor works similar to a simple on and off switch. If it is dark and motion is detected it turns on. After a set period of time it shuts off. The load is irrelevant as long as it does not exceed 300 watts. So yes, this will work with both dimmable and nondimmable LED bulbs however, you will not be able to dim the dimmable bulbs. |
Question: | has temperature compensation |
Answer: | It may have temp compensation but locating it over an opening that is venting a pool area is beyond what the design is set up for. Ron |
Question: | Does this come as pictured with the mounting stub or is it just the sensor? Thanks |
Answer: | It comes with the mounting stub as pictured. The mounting stub is the standard size for attaching to an electrical box (there are any number of options as to what size and style). I purchased this unit about a year ago and it has functioned flawlessly. |
Question: | Can I use two of these in paralled to work one light? I want to mount them on the corners of a garage and turn on one central light |
Answer: | My guess is you will burn them out. i tried this once with a water circulation pump (no light in the circuit) connected to a relay. A friend of mine had 3 of these in 3 different bathrooms in his house. the thought was as soon as someone walked into a bathroom, this device would activate a pump which would circulate hot water from the water tank to the fixtures (and hence the cold water in the line back to the tank for heating). We took precautions. first we made sure the power going to the 'hot' and neutral side of the sensors were from the same breaker (otherwise you could accidentally send 240 volts to the load if the sensors were on different sides of the line coming into your breaker panel). Second, we used a relay (mentioned earlier) as 'the load' because the draw (in amps) of the circulation pump was more than the sensor would allow as a pass though (you have to pay attention to the current these things will allow... watts, amps, miliamps - all need to know stuff! - we could have hooked it up directly, but it would have burned them out in short order, not to mention create a fire hazard). Finally, we ran all three of the load wires back to one junction box, tied them together with a wire nut (to complete the parallel connection you are talking about), and connected the load to the trigger side of the relay. we walked in each room and sure enough, the motion sensor engaged the relay, and the motor kicked on and the water circulated as designed. we thought we were home free. after about 2 months, we noticed one of the sensors was no longer activating the relay (and the pump did not run). we could eliminate the motor as it was completely separated from the electrical path. we discovered one of the motion sensors had burned out. replaced it, and all was well, and then a month later, a motion sensor from ANOTHER bathroom burned out. the relay hardly drew any power, so it couldn't be that. then we separated all of them and had three separate relays to engage the pump - never had another issue with burn-out. so what happened? we think if a person 'tripped' the motion sensor, it sent 110 volts to the load side of the other sensors (which were not activated by motion), and that 'back flow' of power messed up the electronics inside the sensors not in use. only explanation that made sense. so long story short, you could connect them in parallel, but i think they would burn out because of a 'back flow' between the devices. when we separated them with individual relays - no problems. e-circulation pump would have drawn more amps than the sensor allows to pass through we ranf the 'load' side of |
Question: | Can you disable the dusk to dawn setting |
Answer: | yes |
Question: | does it come on during the day when detecting motion or just after dark |
Answer: | If your application requires it to work during the day just put electrical tape over the photo sensor and it works 24/7. I used sensor to activate a fountain pump 24/7 |

User questions & answers
Question: | any way to disable the light sensor so that it always activates lights by motion |
Answer: | Although there is an adjustment to light level needed to activate the light, you can't completely override the need for some darkness for activation. The light sensor on this model is inside the sensor head and can't be physically blocked, so the answer is no. |
Question: | Can you connect to multiple lights at once |
Answer: | Yes but you have to know how to do wiring. The device will not handle more then 500 watts. So it will also depend on the lights you use. My advice is to go with a LED light source and I did so you never have to worry about the wattage. Once again how you do your wiring between devices is where you control how many devices you add on not the Leviton unit. |
Question: | Does it have a light sensor so that it will not turn on during daylight hours? Seems like it should |
Answer: | Yes. No light in daylight |
Question: | How would I mount the motion sensor by itself, rather that to a light fixture? Is there a piece of hardware that goes with it |
Answer: | As an electrician, you would use either a round or rectangular weatherproof box with a weatherproof cover. The box or cover needs to have a 1/2 inch hole so you can screw the sensor into. Also, if the sensor has a locknut with it, screw the locknut onto the sensor, then srcew the sensor into the box or cover a turn or two, using the locknut to put tension on the box or cover so the sensor can be positioned the way it needs to be without being loose. I hope you can make sense out of what I am saying. |

User questions & answers
Question: | How do I know if I need this 250W or the similar 600W switch? Are they interchangeable |
Answer: | Depends on use. Lights and Ceiling fans, 250w is fine. If you have a Electric ceiling heater That requires more watts, then the 600w I would use. Hope this helps. |
Question: | Will the motion sensor be set off by a small (toy size - 10 lbs) dog |
Answer: | I have mine installed in a small walk-in (6 ft x 5 ft) closet and my 10 lb cat triggers it all the time, kind of annoying when it happens at 1 am. I just close the door to preven this from happening. |
Question: | Will this work as... Enter room and I manually turn on the light and then the unit automatically turns off the light after a set time of inactivity? I only want it to turn off the light |
Answer: | Follow up question on the previous answer....So if the unit turns off the light, is the actual switch toggled back to the "off" position? So that the next time someone walks in the door, they have to again toggle the switch back to the "on" position? |
Question: | I don't get the,"No neutral required." A neutral is always required. What am I missing here |
Answer: | I was an electrical engineer for Lutron back in the 1980's. Many dimmers and electronic switches like this one do not require a neutral wire to work. This is not a mechanical switch but an electronic one. It uses a silicon switching device called a triac which turns the light on and off 120 times per second, just like every dimmer ever made. During the brief period 120 times/second when the triac is off, the device draws a small amount of power through the light bulbs it controls, and uses this small amount of power to charge a capacitor, which you can think of as a rechargeable battery. Thus there are many wallbox products, such as most dimmers, that do not require a neutral wire to operate. Nor does it put any power intentionally to ground, which would be against the electrical code and thus could not be sold. The reason other companies require a neutral wire is because they were not designed by companies that also make dimmers as their engineers probably do not realize the device can be designed to draw sufficient power using a triac instead they use a relay, which would produce an audible click when switched on, where as a triac device would make no sounds when turning on and off. Hope this helps. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Can the four sensors be monitored by two receivers in two different homes. (Homes within 50’ of each other |
Answer: | I do not have two receivers, but that should work. Signal is analog not digital. Theoretically you should be able to use as many receivers as you want |
Question: | I have a very long, hilly driveway. Will the sensor transmit to the base up a 25 foot hill and 1000 feet from the house |
Answer: | I’m not sure about the hills but these are pretty good. I have one in my barn with metal walls using it as an alarm if anyone comes through that door and it works great. |
Question: | What happens if a nearby neighbor has the same system? Do they conflict |
Answer: | I purchased the 4 sensor kit. My neighbor purchased only the 2 sensor kit. When my #3 & 4 sensor activated his box would sound alarms for # 3 & 4 which he does not have. |
Question: | When set to the lowest settings, if the wind blows a flower or bushes around the area they are continually setting off, can this be fixed |
Answer: | If the bushes do not too close to the sensor, it wont cause going off. If the problem is not fixed, please contact us at :[email protected] Best regards, Sherry |

User questions & answers
Question: | Do you have hard wired version? Normally the sensor is mounted somewhere out of reach. Why would anyone wants to change battery periodically |
Answer: | No one WANTS to change a battery periodically but if there is no available outlet, it’s better than nothing. And every couple of years is no big deal. (Plus it looks much better if there is no electrical cord running down the side of your house.) |
Question: | Can I use this to trigger other smart outlets |
Answer: | Short answer: Yes Long answer: It depends. I don’t know how home automation works with android, but Phillips Hue is Apple HomeKit compatible. The sensor shows up as 3 sensors in the Apple Home app, motion sensor, light/lux sensor, and temperature sensor. You can create automation rules in Apple Home that can control any HomeKit compatible outlet. I don’t know if Phillips Hue has released any smart outlets (pretty sure they just do lighting), but if so then you could probably create a routine for it in the Hue app. Note: If you’re new to HomeKit, you should be aware that Apple HomeKit automation only works when you have an Apple device acting as a home automation hub. This can either be an AppleTV or iPad (that stays at home). If all you have is an iPhone, it either won’t work at all, or if it does it will only work when your iPhone is connected to your home WiFi. |
Question: | How long will the battery last |
Answer: | About 2-3 years |
Question: | Any way to keep the floodlights on (at a dim level) and they get brighter when detecting motion. AND off altogether if it's daylight |
Answer: | Glad to see there's finally a work around for this. I previously had an app (I can't remember the name) that allowed you to create logic linked to any smart platform... and also use things like the Nest Doorbell... so I had it set to: Hue came on sunset at 10% dim. If Nest detects person, set Hue outdoor lights to 100% Brightness for 30sec., then activate scene 10% dim. It worked great, but the people who developed that app discontinued it. It worked for a while afterward too but then one day just stopped. I'm so glad to see I can do this again!!! (since you can buy "dumb" lights that do this on their own with 2 level dusk dawn motion sensors) |
