Answer:	I haven't tried to. But it's possible if you have it set to the voice activated setting more than likely. I'd assume the battery would die if it was just on full blown record setting the whole time.

Answer:	Hi...The recorder is not always on. To turn it off, press and hold the round Play/Pause button and you will see a countdown on the monitor; 1...2...3, Bye, Bye. Then the monitor goes dark. I haven't set a passcode so to turn it on I press the same button until Welcome appears on the monitor.

Answer:	I think what happens is that the recording is still resident but just ends with the *beep beep* of the battery dying. I've not paid attention lately to it, though.

If you are following the instructions correctly for turning off the device, and it doesn't operate as specified in the manual, that would suggest a malfunctioning unit. I've seen some situations where a contact will stay "closed" which would be the equivalent of holding down the power button which might only RESTART the device (would APPEAR to shut off but then start back up). But first check the manual to be sure you're doing the shut-down correctly.
