There is a selector switch that when set to REC, will record a message when the button is pressed (and held) and when set to PLAY will play back the message in full when the button is pressed (momentarily). The button has been designed with just enough resistance so that it is not triggered unintentionally, but little enough resistance so that it is easily triggered even when inserted in a pillow or plush. There is also a third setting on the selector switch of OFF which can be used for travel or sleep time or anytime where the user doesn't want unintentional recording or playback.
