Answer:	Not well. Des Moines is on the Iowa Statewide Interoperable Communications System (ISICS) which uses many simulcast sites. If you’re in range of two towers broadcasting the same frequency you will have issues. The SDS100 and 200 are the only current Uniden scanners to handle simulcast well.

Answer:	I have the 996P2 with this GPS set but what is missing with Uniden is a Bios update as on MENU look into the GPS and on the current BIOS there is NO RANGE. I live in Raynham,Bristol, Massachusetts and why do I get , in my car a frequency of a city over 20 miles . I want to set the GPS only to 5 miles. You have to pressure Paul from Uniden to update the Bios that you may see in looking for Bios for the 996P2

With the HomePatrol 2 Im able to monitor my local civilian airports, Nellis AFB, the Nevada Test and Training Range (NTTR) including Groom Lake aka Area 51 and the Tonopah Test Range. Theres a small piece of spectrum between 54 to 88 MHz where some military aircraft like to hangout that the HP2 cant receive, but all other bands (e.g. 30-50, 108-136, 138-144, 148-150.8, 162-174, 225-400, and 406-420 MHz) it will receive.

Answer:	Jeff: Yes you can. You must use detach the flexible portable antenna, attach the provided vehicle 12 volt power source, and then attach the external antenna to the unit.

Answer:	The only one I've found was was from J@M model PACB-409-15. And they have a high opinion of it. I slightly modified an ARKON mount with the small pouch. I cut down the belt clip to fit in the bracket on dry days and use the pouch on wet days.

Answer:	Remember your antenna is the most important part of your radio station.. Go with the Sirio Performer 5000, absolutely one of the best antennas you can get for the money.. You get what you pay for.. I've been a radio operator for over 50 years..

Answer:	Your antenna is the most important aspect in getting good range on your CB. For the beginner, your best bet is to buy the Midland 18-2442, Center Load Mag Mount Mobile CB Radio Antenna, available on Amazon for $19.99. It works perfectly with the Midland 75-822 unit. The magnetic base is strong enough to stay put until you remove it. It should be centered on the roof of your car, or truck cab, to radiate the best signal.

Answer:	Yes you can, however the output power will drop drastically (form 5 to I think about 2W) with no indication on the display - it would still show “H” for High power. With the included battery pack though (which is essentially 5 1.2 NiMH AAA batteries in series) it achieves 5W transmit power. Which means if you buy it because of 5W output you must use battery pack. However battery pack does not last long. It is only 700mAh. Radio consumes 42mA on standby. So about 16 hours standby time if you don’t transmit. Charding time on the other hand is 12 hours. Make your own conclusions.
Question:	what is the best REAL range I can expect
Answer:	There are certainly many different choices available to folks regarding radio choices. Many consumers, however, fall into the trap of believing the misleading advertising that various manufacturer’s use to help sell their products, especially when they are in panic mode due to a natural disaster (like an earthquake) or (currently) various lock-down scenarios due to the latest overseas virus. One frequently used example of this buying trap are the claims of 35 to 50 mile range from 1/2 watt UHF FRS/GMRS handheld radios with non-removable antennas (frequently seen on various Cobra, Midland, Motorola, and Uniden radios sold at various big box stores or on the internet). At UHF frequencies (and with a decent antenna), you’ll normally get around 1 mile of range for every 1 watt of power on transmit, so a 1/2 watt big box store FRS/GMRS radio is likely to get only 1/2 mile of range, nowhere near the 35 to 50 mile claims shown on the box in large type (with the phrase “under optimum conditions” shown in very small type). What that means is that if one individual is standing near the cliff face on a tall 9,000 ft. high mountain and his friend is doing the same thing 35 miles away (with nothing between the two mountains but air), then they “may” get the 35 mile range as advertised. When both individuals are at ground level, normal range is reduced to a 1/2 mile (or less) depending upon obstructions that may be in their way.

Answer:	I called the FCC. If the radio goes beyond 2 watts, even if you are only using the lower-power channels, you still need to spend the $70 for the 10 year license. immediate family can use radios with your license (and you on the channel). GMRS will make for a better experience. I would just get it to be safe.

Answer:	While you can leave it plugged in all the time, the question comes down more to the type of battery and whether you are shortening the life of the battery by doing so. I don’t personally know about this partidevice, but if you learn whether the battery is li-on, ni-mh, etc, then research that particular battery technology.

Answer:	And no there is no 12v plug or anything. Just has a positive and negative for wiring to your power supply of your choosing. And yes to needing to be wired up which is easier than you think.

Answer:	The CB has two wires built in so all you would need is a cigarette lighter socket adapter and wire it up. The wires are about 4' long so you should have no problems where you mount it. The wiring is very easy - that's the set up I have so I can unplug and remove the CB when I'm just driving around locally.

Answer:	The 520XL can also be taken to any CB shop and be "peaked and tuned" to over double the factory power. This is a very common practice that any trucker will do with his/her CB.
