9 best gmrs radio repeaters

GMRS (General Mobile Radio Service) radio repeaters are devices used to extend the range and coverage of GMRS two-way radios. GMRS is a licensed radio service in the United States that allows for short-distance communication between individuals or groups using higher-powered handheld or mobile radios. Repeaters play a crucial role in expanding the reach of GMRS radio communication. Here's what you need to know about GMRS radio repeaters:

  1. Repeater Functionality: GMRS radio repeaters receive signals on one frequency and then retransmit them on another. They operate on a pair of frequencies, one for receiving (input) and the other for transmitting (output). Repeaters are typically set up in strategic locations to cover a specific geographic area.

  2. Extended Range: Repeaters greatly enhance the effective range of GMRS radios. While the typical range of GMRS handheld radios is limited to a few miles in direct line-of-sight conditions, a repeater can extend this range significantly, often covering tens of miles or more.

  3. Usage and Licensing: To use GMRS repeaters, you need a valid GMRS license issued by the Federal Communications Commission (FCC). Both the individuals operating GMRS radios and those who set up and operate repeaters must be licensed.

  4. Repeater Infrastructure: Setting up a GMRS repeater involves installing specialized radio equipment, including antennas, transceivers, and controllers. Repeaters are often placed on elevated structures such as tall buildings or towers to maximize coverage.

  5. Coverage Zones: GMRS repeaters are designed to cover specific geographic zones or areas, such as a city or a county. Users within the repeater's coverage zone can communicate with each other through the repeater even if they are not in direct line of sight.

  6. Duplex Operation: Repeaters operate in duplex mode, meaning they transmit on one frequency while receiving on another simultaneously. This allows for continuous and simultaneous two-way communication among users.

  7. Access Tones: Some GMRS repeaters require users to transmit a specific access tone (often referred to as a CTCSS or DCS tone) to access the repeater. This helps prevent interference from unauthorized users.

  8. Community and Emergency Communication: GMRS repeaters are commonly used in various applications, including community-based communication among residents, outdoor activities, and emergency communication networks.

  9. Maintenance: Repeater owners or operators are responsible for the maintenance and upkeep of the equipment. Routine inspections and repairs may be necessary to ensure reliable performance.

  10. Privacy and Security: Keep in mind that GMRS radio communication is not entirely private, as other licensed users can potentially listen to your conversations. If you require more secure communication, consider other options, such as encrypted radios.

Using GMRS radio repeaters can be a valuable way to establish reliable long-distance communication within a specific area, making them a useful tool for both personal and community applications where extended range is needed. However, it's essential to understand the licensing requirements and operating protocols associated with GMRS radio use and repeaters.

User questions & answers

Question: So, it's a stripped down modified uv82 with fixed gmrs only channels to get the fcc certification? but why is it limited to 2 watts in the permit
Answer: The answer I got from BTech re: the power was "The guaranteed minimum high power output of the GMRS-V1 is 2W." I think the important word here is "guaranteed." I've heard of other owners getting anywhere from 3 to 5 watts output. The most BTech will _guarantee_ is 2. YMMV
Question: Does this radio have better range then the a regular gmrs radio
Answer: I have compared the range of this with other GMRS HTs and found that it is generally better. I replaced the antenna with a Nagoya NA-771, but even the stock antenna seems to out preform the best radios with fixed antennas. The settings on this radio have a lot more options making it much more versatile but may take slightly longer to understand than the limited settings of the ones available in most retail stores. I have a set of Midland FRS/GMRS radios that have clearer audio quality at close range but as range is increased their audio quality reduces to static over much shorter distances than this radio until this one is still able to be heard and the others are just noise. Rx range seems to be substantially better on this radio than others I have compared to. All of this is of course limited by your surroundings and terrain. For maximum range from a handheld GMRS I have been pleased with this radio!
Question: Are the antennas on this radio removable to allow connecting a longer antenna, or a cable to an exterior antenna
Answer: 1. Yes, antenna is removable. As other reviewers noted it is SMA-Female, similar to that for Baofeng etc. radios. It is different from the connector for Yaesu/Vertex, Kenwood, etc. Be gentle when you tighten the antenna. If too tight, then when you take it off the connector will stay on the radio and pull out of the antenna. 2. Agreeing with other reviewers - I believe the radio has been updated to the new GMRS rules of 2017. This is the third pair my volunteer CERT team has purchased (Community Emergency Response Team), so I know the radio well.
Question: When will this unit be update to reflect the new changes in gmrs rules
Answer: Nov. 11, 2017 The same model with updated Firmware (US32418) was released. The GMRS V1 now has all 30 channels as given in the new GMRS rules, (the additional seven FRS 467 MHz interstitials channels along with the older 23 GMRS channels including the eight repeater channels). The channels have also been moved so it now starts with the radio's Channel 01 instead of the previous firmware where the channels started with Channel 00. This helps as you can listen to the Voice announce the channels and they now correspond with the GMRS channel numbers.

Why choose UV-5X?

The UV-5X is a LEGAL GMRS handheld radio. This radio extends all the functions from UV-5R, but transmits only on the GMRS channels. It adds NOAA Weather Alert. The UV-5X offers GMRS performance as another addition to the familiar UV-5R series of radios. A true GMRS radio that will be a useful companion in your outdoor activities.

FCC Certificated: Part 95E & Part 15B

FCC ID: 2AJGM-P51UV

Please kindly know that UV-5X is an FCC Certificated model ( FCC Certification downloadable below). On UV band you can only receive but not transmit -- this meets the requirements of FCC.

Also, the antenna of UV-5X is fixed as FCC Support E § 95.1787 requires: The antenna must be a non-removable integral part of the GMRS unit.

Why choose GMRS over FRS?

  1. GMRS repeater capable. The UV-5X can take advantage of GMRS repeaters to get a more powerful, further-ranging signal. -- This is not an option with FRS radios.
  2. GMRS radios allow Wide-band FM to provide a louder and clearer signal than the FRS radios restricted to Narrow-band FM with a lower power rating.
  3. The UV-5X provides more selectable channels than FRS radios, more CTCSS and DCS tone options to reduce unwanted signals.

Cross Compatible

  1. Compatible with all accessories of UV-5R series, such as 3800mAh battery. Easy to find backup parts on market or from your previous radios.
  2. Compatible with BAOFENG new six-way charger.

NOAA Weather Alert

UV-5X can automatically scan 11 NOAA weather channels. 24/7 stand by and update severe weather, sending instant alerts and wake you up from sleep when the cell phone is turned off.

An Ideal companion for road trips, hunting, backpacking, security guard, and other outdoor activities.

User questions & answers

Question: Will these work with samcom handheld gmrs
Answer: It should work with any GMRS radios.
Question: Can anyone tell me exactly what i will need to program this, i have the 5r uv portable and the cord was wrong costing me more money
Answer: I recommend not programming with chirp. there are alot of restrictions on gmrs radio and limited number of channels you can only transmit on so there is really no need to use the software for the 22 rx/tx channels you have. unless you want to add a bunch of listen only channels its easy to program through the radio interface and if you use repeaters you will be forced to reprogram channels as you travel since you can only store 8 repeater channel settings
Question: It this radio part 95 accepted by the FCC
Answer: Yes this radio is part 95 accepted by the FCC.
Question: could i use cigarette lighter adapter for power up this radio
Answer: The advertised maximum amperage draw is 20 amps, and the supply wires are fairly heavy - 12 or 14 AGW; so it's probably too heavy for your typical cigarette lighter c circuit (15 A). The supply leads are fused from the manufacturer, and direct battery connection is recommended.

User questions & answers

Question: How large of a metal ground plane (diameter of a metal disc) do I need to provide for a non-metal mounting on my Corvette (composite panels
Answer: I would say at least 6 inches. Seems to work good for me
Question: Will the 15w version still be able to operate at 5w for the frs channels
Answer: If you operate a radio that has been approved for both FRS and GMRS, and if you limit your operations to the FRS channels with a maximum power of ½ watt effective radiated power and an integral antenna, you are not required to have a license. (Note that some dual-service radios transmit with higher power on FRS channels 1 through 7; these radios can be used without a license only on FRS channels 8 through 14.)
Question: Do you need a license to use this
Answer: Yes. A GMRS license is required to transmit on this radio. It is $70 for a 10 year license. You need to purchase from FCC. This is not a HAM radio so a HAM license will not work.
Question: Is this a CB
Answer: No, it’s a 2-way radio that utilizes a different frequency band than C.B.’s. These are GMRS radios which by law you are supposed to have a license from the FCC to operate. The license is not hard to get. It’s a 10 year license for you and your immediate family that cost $70. Which averages out to $7 dollars a year. There is no test, you just go on line and register then submit your fee. I did mine on a Saturday night and it was approved on Monday.

User questions & answers

Question: How does your repeater differ from the mcbazel surecom sr-112 repeater? they appear identical. why is there no manual available for your product

Question: Grms radio requires that a callsign be transmitted every 15 minutes. it's 10 minutes for ham radio. will this repeater do that

User questions & answers

Question: Do these have to be used with a repeater? what is the distance it can transmit with and without the repeater
Answer: Low Power on Channels 1-7 (FRS/GMRS shared channels), presumably 5 watts. No access to Channels 8-14 (FRS only channels), Medium/Hi Power on Channels 15-22, presumably 40 watts on High, unknown PEP on Medium setting. RP 15-18 Channels transmit on one frequency and receive on another (requiring a radio that can be program to transmit and receive on different frequencies, or a repeater. Transmit distances on GMRS frequencies are based on the antenna, height of the antenna, transmitter's power output (limited to 50 watts for repeaters) and the terrain. Also, UHF (GMRS frequencies) performs better in building but not as well in open field like VHF.
Question: Is this a Ham Radio
Answer: No, This is a 40 Watt GMRS Radio.
Question: When are these radios going to be updated with the new additional gmrs channels
Answer: Channels 8–14, formerly exclusive to FRS, since September 28, 2017 can be used by GMRS at 0.5 watts. Channels 15–22, formerly reserved exclusively for GMRS, can be used at up to 2 watts in the FRS. This is why. Maybe in the future they will. Hope this helps you.
Question: What kind of license is needed with this raido
Answer: There is conflicting information below. I hold both a GMRS licence, and a Amateur Radio License (Tech). This radio requires a GMRS license. No test, $70 for immediate family for 10 years. Having an amateur radio license DOES NOT qualify someone to operate on GMRS; the two licenses are for different proposes and frequency ranges. A license does help the FCC to enforce airwave regulations, something I've changed my opinion on-now believing in stronger enforcement-over the last few years. The question does come up, "Who's going to stop me?" Honestly, maybe no one. But for me, the more I see the dissolve of rule-of-law, good manners, and good sense, the more important it becomes to be a person who is fighting the real battle: whether or not to be a person if integrity. (BTW - If someone truly didn't want or can't get a license, for whatever reason, there are some other radio services that everyone is "licensed" to use (called "license by rule"; there is no "unlicensed" radio bands, so-to-speak) like Citizens Band (CB's), Family Radio Service (FRS, often packaged with GMRS, so know which channels you can use and at what power settings), etc. Radios can be great fun and good experiences for kids. Teach them well, and I hope to hear you on-the-air sometime!
