10 best gmrs radio

GMRS (General Mobile Radio Service) is a type of two-way radio communication system used for both personal and business purposes. It operates on UHF (Ultra High Frequency) radio frequencies in the United States and Canada. Here are some key points about GMRS radios:

  1. Licensing: To operate a GMRS radio, you need to obtain a GMRS license from the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) in the United States. This license covers you and your immediate family members for personal use. It's essential to follow the rules and regulations outlined in the license.

  2. Range: GMRS radios typically have a longer range compared to Family Radio Service (FRS) radios, which are another type of two-way radio. The range can vary depending on factors like terrain and the power output of the radio, but it can often reach several miles.

  3. Channels: GMRS radios have access to multiple channels, including shared FRS/GMRS channels, which can be useful for communication with FRS radios that do not require a license. However, the use of higher-powered GMRS channels may require a license.

  4. Privacy Codes: Many GMRS radios offer privacy codes or sub-channels, which allow users to reduce interference from other users on the same channel. These codes can help maintain clearer and more private communication.

  5. Applications: GMRS radios are commonly used for a variety of outdoor activities such as camping, hiking, and hunting. They are also valuable for communication in situations where cell phone coverage is limited or unavailable, such as in remote areas or during emergencies.

  6. Compatibility: Some GMRS radios are compatible with FRS radios, which can be useful when communicating with friends or family members who use FRS radios. However, it's important to be aware of the power limitations when using shared channels.

  7. Accessories: Many GMRS radios come with accessories like headsets, belt clips, and rechargeable batteries. These accessories can enhance the convenience and functionality of the radios.

  8. Emergency Communication: GMRS radios can be a valuable tool for emergency communication. They are often used by outdoor enthusiasts and families during outdoor adventures to stay in touch in case of separation or emergencies.

Remember that GMRS radio use is subject to regulations set by the FCC, and it's essential to comply with these rules to ensure proper and legal operation. Obtaining a GMRS license is a straightforward process, and it allows you to enjoy the benefits of this communication system while staying within the bounds of the law.

User questions & answers

Question: So, it's a stripped down modified uv82 with fixed gmrs only channels to get the fcc certification? but why is it limited to 2 watts in the permit
Answer: The answer I got from BTech re: the power was "The guaranteed minimum high power output of the GMRS-V1 is 2W." I think the important word here is "guaranteed." I've heard of other owners getting anywhere from 3 to 5 watts output. The most BTech will _guarantee_ is 2. YMMV
Question: Does this radio have better range then the a regular gmrs radio
Answer: I have compared the range of this with other GMRS HTs and found that it is generally better. I replaced the antenna with a Nagoya NA-771, but even the stock antenna seems to out preform the best radios with fixed antennas. The settings on this radio have a lot more options making it much more versatile but may take slightly longer to understand than the limited settings of the ones available in most retail stores. I have a set of Midland FRS/GMRS radios that have clearer audio quality at close range but as range is increased their audio quality reduces to static over much shorter distances than this radio until this one is still able to be heard and the others are just noise. Rx range seems to be substantially better on this radio than others I have compared to. All of this is of course limited by your surroundings and terrain. For maximum range from a handheld GMRS I have been pleased with this radio!
Question: Are the antennas on this radio removable to allow connecting a longer antenna, or a cable to an exterior antenna
Answer: 1. Yes, antenna is removable. As other reviewers noted it is SMA-Female, similar to that for Baofeng etc. radios. It is different from the connector for Yaesu/Vertex, Kenwood, etc. Be gentle when you tighten the antenna. If too tight, then when you take it off the connector will stay on the radio and pull out of the antenna. 2. Agreeing with other reviewers - I believe the radio has been updated to the new GMRS rules of 2017. This is the third pair my volunteer CERT team has purchased (Community Emergency Response Team), so I know the radio well.
Question: When will this unit be update to reflect the new changes in gmrs rules
Answer: Nov. 11, 2017 The same model with updated Firmware (US32418) was released. The GMRS V1 now has all 30 channels as given in the new GMRS rules, (the additional seven FRS 467 MHz interstitials channels along with the older 23 GMRS channels including the eight repeater channels). The channels have also been moved so it now starts with the radio's Channel 01 instead of the previous firmware where the channels started with Channel 00. This helps as you can listen to the Voice announce the channels and they now correspond with the GMRS channel numbers.

User questions & answers

Question: Can I use this radio for a home base
Answer: Yes you can, but you'll need a 110v AC to 12v DC power converter and you'll also need a base station type antenna. I'm not sure why you would use this particular unit though because Midland makes a 40watt unit that would be much better suited to base station use.
Question: Are the privacy codes compatible with Motorola talkabout radios
Answer: Yes, however, I also have the T600 talkabouts and I was disappointed in the range between the MXT275 and the T600. I live in the city (Boston) in a neighborhood with lots of houses, so I knew that I had obstructions to deal with. But I thought I would have gotten better performance. The MXT to T600 only got about 50-75 feet further than the two handheld T600s got with each other. I am awaiting the upgraded 3db antenna to see if that helps any. Also, just a note, I did some research and the Talkabouts are limited to max power of 1.5 watts. Probably more realistically 1 watt consistently. I decided to pick up a set of the new Midland T295 handhelds.. as they are rated at nearly 3 watts.. probably 2.5 watts more realistically. But thats still a 150% power increase over the T600s so in theory.. I'm hoping the more powerful handheld.. paired with the MXT and the upgraded 3db antenna will have far better performance. I'm sure I'll have far more success with this set up when we use them on camping trips away from the city tho. Cheers.
Question: Is the internal speaker in the microphone or in the base unit
Answer: There are speakers in both the head unit and the base unit
Question: Does this radio have an internal ID that will show up on another radio or be able to be identified if used with a repeater
Answer: Don’t be fooled, most users don’t and shouldn’t be required to have a license to use this radio. The other answer that says you are required to have and use a call sign is false. You can get a GMRS license which might be a good thing to have. Now if your setting up a repeater I believe you do need to be licensed.

User questions & answers

Question: can you also use AA batteries to power these radios
Answer: Yes you can, however the output power will drop drastically (form 5 to I think about 2W) with no indication on the display - it would still show “H” for High power. With the included battery pack though (which is essentially 5 1.2 NiMH AAA batteries in series) it achieves 5W transmit power. Which means if you buy it because of 5W output you must use battery pack. However battery pack does not last long. It is only 700mAh. Radio consumes 42mA on standby. So about 16 hours standby time if you don’t transmit. Charding time on the other hand is 12 hours. Make your own conclusions.
Question: what is the best REAL range I can expect
Answer: There are certainly many different choices available to folks regarding radio choices. Many consumers, however, fall into the trap of believing the misleading advertising that various manufacturer’s use to help sell their products, especially when they are in panic mode due to a natural disaster (like an earthquake) or (currently) various lock-down scenarios due to the latest overseas virus. One frequently used example of this buying trap are the claims of 35 to 50 mile range from 1/2 watt UHF FRS/GMRS handheld radios with non-removable antennas (frequently seen on various Cobra, Midland, Motorola, and Uniden radios sold at various big box stores or on the internet). At UHF frequencies (and with a decent antenna), you’ll normally get around 1 mile of range for every 1 watt of power on transmit, so a 1/2 watt big box store FRS/GMRS radio is likely to get only 1/2 mile of range, nowhere near the 35 to 50 mile claims shown on the box in large type (with the phrase “under optimum conditions” shown in very small type). What that means is that if one individual is standing near the cliff face on a tall 9,000 ft. high mountain and his friend is doing the same thing 35 miles away (with nothing between the two mountains but air), then they “may” get the 35 mile range as advertised. When both individuals are at ground level, normal range is reduced to a 1/2 mile (or less) depending upon obstructions that may be in their way.
Question: How much range can I expect from these radios in rugged, mountainous and forested terrain
Answer: Expect
Question: do I need a gmrs license
Answer: I called the FCC. If the radio goes beyond 2 watts, even if you are only using the lower-power channels, you still need to spend the $70 for the 10 year license. immediate family can use radios with your license (and you on the channel). GMRS will make for a better experience. I would just get it to be safe.

User questions & answers

Question: Will these work with samcom handheld gmrs
Answer: It should work with any GMRS radios.
Question: Can anyone tell me exactly what i will need to program this, i have the 5r uv portable and the cord was wrong costing me more money
Answer: I recommend not programming with chirp. there are alot of restrictions on gmrs radio and limited number of channels you can only transmit on so there is really no need to use the software for the 22 rx/tx channels you have. unless you want to add a bunch of listen only channels its easy to program through the radio interface and if you use repeaters you will be forced to reprogram channels as you travel since you can only store 8 repeater channel settings
Question: It this radio part 95 accepted by the FCC
Answer: Yes this radio is part 95 accepted by the FCC.
Question: could i use cigarette lighter adapter for power up this radio
Answer: The advertised maximum amperage draw is 20 amps, and the supply wires are fairly heavy - 12 or 14 AGW; so it's probably too heavy for your typical cigarette lighter c circuit (15 A). The supply leads are fused from the manufacturer, and direct battery connection is recommended.

GMRS-50X1 50 Watt GMRS Mobile Radio

The GMRS-50X1 is a 50 Watt GMRS mobile radio compatible with all brands of FRS and GMRS radios. It is also compatible with GMRS repeaters. Channels are wideband and narrowband compatible. The GMRS-50X1 is the best GMRS mobile radio available!

GMRS channels are setup in the standardized FRS/GMRS flow. Channels 1-22 are non-repeater channels coordinating with the GMRS channel list and channels 23-30 are GMRS repeater channels.

Channel List:

  • 226 Programmable Scanner Channels (Channels 00 & 31-256) - Receive Only

* Per FCC GMRS Radio Guidelines; Channels 1-7 are limited to Low Power - 5watt output

Highlighted Features and Functions

[Privacy Tones] You can mix and match tones for repeater usage. The GMRS-50X1 will save any modification to the channel (even during a reboot) and will remember any channel change you apply in any mode. All CTCSS and DCS tones are supported.

[QUAD Watch] The GMRS-50X1 operates as multiple radios in one, with a channel selected as the primary channel, while simultaneously watching up to 3 other frequencies or channels. You can simplify the radio to only watch one or two channels as well.

[FM, NOAA, and Scanner] The GMRS-50X1 has a built in FM radio along with the ability to store VHF and UHF scanner channels. This means while talking on GMRS - you can still monitor other channels on VHF or UHF including the NOAA weather bands.

User questions & answers

Question: How large of a metal ground plane (diameter of a metal disc) do I need to provide for a non-metal mounting on my Corvette (composite panels
Answer: I would say at least 6 inches. Seems to work good for me
Question: Will the 15w version still be able to operate at 5w for the frs channels
Answer: If you operate a radio that has been approved for both FRS and GMRS, and if you limit your operations to the FRS channels with a maximum power of ½ watt effective radiated power and an integral antenna, you are not required to have a license. (Note that some dual-service radios transmit with higher power on FRS channels 1 through 7; these radios can be used without a license only on FRS channels 8 through 14.)
Question: Do you need a license to use this
Answer: Yes. A GMRS license is required to transmit on this radio. It is $70 for a 10 year license. You need to purchase from FCC. This is not a HAM radio so a HAM license will not work.
Question: Is this a CB
Answer: No, it’s a 2-way radio that utilizes a different frequency band than C.B.’s. These are GMRS radios which by law you are supposed to have a license from the FCC to operate. The license is not hard to get. It’s a 10 year license for you and your immediate family that cost $70. Which averages out to $7 dollars a year. There is no test, you just go on line and register then submit your fee. I did mine on a Saturday night and it was approved on Monday.

User questions & answers

Question: What happens if you don't have a lisence
Answer: Large fines are possible, I have seen sources that say up to $10,000 and jail time. There is a pending repeal of the license requirement but is currently still required and I think the fee right now is $70 for 5 years and extends to your family for use as well. The site is a bit of a pain to figure out but you will only take a day to have your license.
Question: How long is the antenna cable
Answer: The packaged antenna cable for the MXT105 is approximately 20 ft. in length.
Question: What kind of max range does this thing have
Answer: 3 miles without repeater
Question: Will this work with midland lxt600vp3 radios
Answer: Yes it sure will, the only channels you will not be able to use are 8 - 14 which are set to .5W of power per the FCC. The GMRS MicroMobiles are not programmed with those channels. However, use channels 1 - 7 and 15 - 22 for easy communication between these units!
