10 best aviation transceivers

Aviation transceivers are specialized two-way radios designed for communication within the aviation industry. They play a crucial role in facilitating communication between pilots, air traffic controllers, and other relevant personnel to ensure safe and efficient air travel. Here are some key points about aviation transceivers:

  1. Communication in Aviation: Aviation transceivers are used for communication between pilots and air traffic control (ATC). They enable pilots to receive instructions, weather updates, and other critical information while also allowing them to communicate their own status and requests.

  2. VHF Frequency Range: Aviation transceivers typically operate in the Very High-Frequency (VHF) range. The VHF band is commonly used in aviation for its ability to provide clear communication over relatively long distances, making it suitable for air-to-ground and air-to-air communication.

  3. Airband Radios: Aviation transceivers are often referred to as airband radios because they operate on specific frequencies allocated for aviation communication. The airband frequency range is typically between 108.000 MHz and 136.975 MHz.

  4. Portable and Panel-Mounted Units: Aviation transceivers come in both portable and panel-mounted configurations. Portable units are handheld devices that pilots can carry with them, providing flexibility in communication, especially during pre-flight checks. Panel-mounted units are installed in the aircraft's instrument panel for more permanent and integrated use.

  5. Emergency Communication: Aviation transceivers play a critical role in emergency situations. Pilots use emergency frequencies to communicate distress signals, and air traffic controllers can use these frequencies to coordinate emergency response efforts.

  6. Integrated Features: Modern aviation transceivers may come with additional features such as LCD displays, programmable memory channels, and compatibility with other avionic systems. These features enhance functionality and ease of use for pilots.

  7. Regulatory Compliance: Aviation transceivers must comply with aviation regulations and standards set by aviation authorities, ensuring that they meet safety and communication requirements for air travel.

  8. International Standards: Since aviation is an international industry, aviation transceivers often adhere to international standards to ensure interoperability and consistency in communication across different regions and countries.

When using aviation transceivers, it is essential for pilots to be familiar with the specific features and functionalities of the equipment, as well as the relevant regulations governing their use. Additionally, regular maintenance and testing of these transceivers are crucial to ensure their reliability in critical situations.

User questions & answers

Question: Is there an adapter pack to use aa batteries such as with the earlier fta
Answer: No. This is a compact radio and comes with a rechargeable Li-ion battery pack and charge cradle. No option for using AA cells.
Question: I see Software for programing as a download but no programing cable? Is it avaiable
Answer: The reprogramming cable does not come with the radio. You can buy one for about $25 if you need it. (I just did a Web search for “Yaesu 250 programming cable”.) 99% of all the features are accessible via the Setup menu on the radio. This is a great basic VHF backup radio for the price.
Question: Does the headset adapter allow you to plug directly into the Bose A20 and uses the mic activator on the airplane yoke
Answer: The BOSE A20 will connect to the radio via the supplied headset adapter. Ensure that you set the mic to external on the radio, otherwise the headset microphone will not work to the radio. You will need an inline, remote PTT switch, connected via the headset adapter, and mount it on the yoke
Question: What does it mean by comm only? i would still be able to talk 2-way
Answer: It means that receiving radio-navigation channels (108-117.95 MHz;"VOR") is not included. Yes, you will be able to talk and receive on other channels(118~133 MHz).

User questions & answers

Question: Hi, can you provide a 220v charger
Answer: You of course need to have a valid amateur radio license to use this radio. Provided that you and your family member are both licensed you could use this in pdn mode or using the wires x system to a node to talk to any other node in the world.
Question: Do you need some kind of license to use this radio
Answer: The minimum channel spacing depends upon what frequency (or band) you are using. Almost every ARRL book has a frequency table, where you can sort it out.
Question: To charge this radio, do you have to plug the cord into the radio or does it have a charging tray that the whole radio fits into
Answer: Carl is correct. VERY few (if any) HTs will Tx/Rx on SSB. I own this HT (and others). I have yet to find an HT which will even attempt SSB. This is a great radio. So is the Kenwood TH-D74. However, even the Kenwood (which is a tri-band radio) will not do SSB Tx - only Rx. So, the short answer to your question is, "No".
Question: what all comes with the radio
Answer: I ordered two in the event they were duplicates. 1 worked and 1 didn’t - upon closer inspection, and my option this is not an apple product

User questions & answers

Question: Will this work with a Kore Aviation P
Answer: no
Question: Can I listen to 700mhz / 800mhz freqs
Answer: Its not a CB.... A CB operates in 11 meters, this is a 2 meter VHF radio
Question: Will this radio transmit on any ham frequencies outside the air / nav bands? Would like to communicate with wife on ground with her VX
Answer: No. This is an amateur band radio on 2 meters. It requires an FCC license (test required) to operate. It will not transmit nor receive on CB frequencies.
Question: What does it include in the package
Answer: This is a "Customer questions & answers" area, not the dealer/distributor question area, so don't expect an answer from Amazon or SARASOTA AVIONICS INTERNATIONAL. However, I can provide that the US AC adapter with US prongs, is capable of an input of 100-240V ~50-60Hz (Yaesu AC Adapter SAD-18B). So all you'd need to get to make it work is a simple, appropriate country adapter to plug the provided AC adapter into.

User questions & answers

Question: Where this device has been manufactured
Answer: The ICOM IC-A25N Transceiver is manufactured in Japan.
Question: Does this come with a charger
Answer: Yes. It comes with the 110 wall plug in
Question: Is there DME capability
Answer: No, but has GPS. Not much experience playing with the Nav functions.
Question: Can the gps functionality connect to an ipad to use foreflight
Answer: No. From my experience there is no connectivity with foreflight. This radio uses the Icom RS-Aero app and Bluetooth to communicate. You can plan your own routes in their app but no connectivity with anything even google or Apple Maps. Great radio but stand alone unit. Bluetooth will work with your ipad and headset though if it is equipped. Nice for back up without fumbling for cords but you do need to turn on Bluetooth from the radio.

User questions & answers

Question: Are they only 120 voltage, can you have then in 220 voltage charging- like in Europe
Answer: It’s not water resistant!
Question: can you talk to 911 communications
Answer: It works great in RV's. This is a VHF/ UHF Ham radio. It Transmits on 145.00 to 147.00 Mhz and 440.00 FM only. It will be great for emergencies but you will need to get a Ham license to use it.
Question: what kind of ac charger is this shiped with? EU, US, AUST
Answer: The quickest, cheapest way to use this radio legally, besides using it on FRS channels and keeping it under the required 2W or 0.5W, whichever one it is (and I'm not even sure if THIS would even be legal because it has a detachable antenna and I'm not sure if that plays a role in it's legality), would be to simply apply for your GMRS license... It's only $70 for 10 years, covers your entire family and your callsign is granted to you usually within hours of them processing your payment... This will allow you to legally use all of the GMRS channels (I believe some GMRS channels share with FRS) transmitting with radios up to 50W. So you can get nice 25-40W base stations, or units in your vehicle or what have you as well. That would be your best bet. You would only be able to transmit on the GMRS channels which is I believe around 465.0000 and above, don't remember the exact channels, but you can scan and listen in on any other channels to your heart's desire. Licensing only covers transmitting, not receiving. For more information on GMRS licensing, check out the FCC's website. They have a utility that you can use called the ULS (Universal Licensing System, or whatever) which allows you to apply for the licenses, pay for, view the status of your application, and view your license information such as callsign at any time. Though you need to register for an FRN, which is a number that you use to log in and apply for stuff or look up information.. Give it a shot, I recently applied for my GMRS license and got my callsign within a couple days. They were running slow, but I kept checking my application status and sure enough a couple hours after the point which the status said that they processed the payment, I received my callsign... You can enter your email address so that you're notified or receive your license electronically, but I haven't received an email from them yet. I just knew that I was approved by checking it repeatedly.
Question: do you have to license
Answer: Baofeng radio, seller is Mirkit
