12 best power meters for vhfs
Power meters for VHF (Very High Frequency) radios are devices used to measure the output power of radio transmitters in the VHF frequency range, typically between 30 MHz and 300 MHz. These meters are essential tools for radio operators and enthusiasts to ensure that their transmitters are operating within legal limits and to optimize performance.
Here are some key points related to power meters for VHF radios and their applications:
Power Measurement:
- VHF power meters are designed to measure the output power of VHF transmitters, expressed in watts.
- They are commonly used with various radio communication devices, including Fixed Mount CB Radios, CB Radios Scanners, CB Two Way Radios, Portable Audio Video, and other VHF electronics.
Calibration and Accuracy:
- Accuracy is crucial in power measurements to comply with regulatory requirements and to avoid interference with other communication systems.
- Power meters need to be periodically calibrated to maintain accuracy.
SWR (Standing Wave Ratio) Measurement:
- Some VHF power meters also incorporate SWR measurement capabilities. SWR is a critical parameter indicating the efficiency of power transfer between the transmitter and the antenna.
Types of Power Meters:
- Analog Meters: Traditional analog power meters provide a visual representation of power levels using a needle or a moving coil.
- Digital Meters: Modern digital power meters offer precise numerical readouts for power levels and may include additional features such as frequency measurement and SWR analysis.
Connectivity and Compatibility:
- Power meters are equipped with connectors that allow them to be easily connected between the transmitter and the antenna system.
- It's important to ensure that the power meter is compatible with the frequency range and power levels of the specific VHF transmitter being used.
Applications:
- VHF power meters find applications in various fields, including amateur radio, marine communication, aviation, public safety, and other industries where VHF communication is essential.
Usage in Troubleshooting:
- Power meters are valuable tools for troubleshooting radio systems. If there are issues with transmission or antenna matching, a power meter can help identify and address these problems.
In summary, VHF power meters play a crucial role in maintaining and optimizing the performance of VHF radio communication systems. They provide accurate measurements of output power and other parameters, contributing to efficient and reliable communication.

User questions & answers
Question: | Is this made in China |
Answer: | yes it 8s. |
Question: | Will this work for a yaesu ftm 400xdr monile radio? dual band 2m/70cm |
Answer: | This is frequency dependant, not brand dependant so it will work as long as you have the correct connections. |
Question: | Will this work with digital radio dmr such as raymarine ais |
Answer: | Nope |
Question: | does this work for cb radios? just saw the frequency range. cb is 37.185 mhz |
Answer: | CB is just below the 10 meter ham band so the CB frequency should be around 27 mHz...this meter does the 2 meter and 70 cm ham bands; doubt that it would cover 11 meter CB band. |

User questions & answers
Question: | To test radio output power the manual instructs to connect 50 ohm dummy load instead of the antenna. Exactly how is that done |
Answer: | It depends on what connector type your dummy load has but all you need is a PL259 cable to connect to the antenna side of the meter then connect the dummy load to that cable using an adaptor if you need to. Then connect your radio to the input side of the meter and test away. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Can i purchase a female panel mount n connector |
Answer: | There are adapters from whatever to whatever... Search N-female coupling. This does affect in a measurable way of the unit.. |
Question: | How does the SWR/power accuracy compare to the expensive meters |
Answer: | I really like mine . Seems very good |
Question: | Does this come with the so239 connectors seen in the picture |
Answer: | Yes it does come with 2 adapters from SO239 to N connector. |
Question: | what adapters exactly do I have to buy to test this in a baofeng |
Answer: | This meter is inserted between a transmitter and an antenna (or dummy load). You need a SMA female to UHF SO-239 adapter as well as a cable to the meter. All necessary adapters and cables are available on Amazon. I recommend DHT Electronics adapter and a male to male SO-239 cable for input to the meter. You will also need a UHF SO 239 connection from the meter output to the antenna or dummy load. |

Question: | This swr says it’s not for digetal radios but what if you have a yaesu 7250 dr that can be set to analog going through this swr |
Answer: | It is an SWR/Power meter. Should work with any rig in any mode as you're looking at RF, not analog or digital signals. |
Question: | Does this measure peak or average power |
Answer: | Can’t measure peak power |
Question: | The pictures -do not show- any included connectors for the sw-102s. are there any included? type |
Answer: | No there are none wth unit |
Question: | whay kind of adapter do I need it to connecytit to a handeheld radio baofeng UV-5R |
Answer: | You would need an PL259/Uhf male to SMA female. The SMA male works with most Baofeng style radios like the UV5R. I believe DHT electronics sells them on Amazon! |

User questions & answers
Question: | Can this be used to tune an outdoor antenna connected to a baofeng uv-5r on both bands? thanks |
Answer: | Yes this speaker will fit your vehicle... JWH |
Question: | im looking for something that test rf cables with tnc/bnc connectos to see if the cable is good, is this what this device does |
Answer: | The speaker comes with what is shown in the pictures. Plugs?? If you look at the picture with the speaker upside down, you can see on the right side two "L' shaped pieces of metal. Your two speaker wires need to have a metal clip attached to them that would slide onto those "L" shaped pieces of metal. If you are replacing a speaker, you will be removing the speaker wire from the old speaker by sliding the speaker wire clip off of the old speaker. |
Question: | Since it only comes with a 5 watt dummy load, why doesn't it have a 100 watt dummy load? a 5 watt dummy load will burn up at 100 watts |
Answer: | Depends on you unit your hooking these up to... |
Question: | Does it come with the dummy load? Or do i have to order one too |
Answer: | Not sure, but I doubt it. The only output from the main screen is to plug in the second one, and that is not a hdmi connection. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Does it come with the ground plate as others do |
Answer: | Mine did not come with a ground plane. |
Question: | Is it just for ham radio |
Answer: | It is for any radio with a removable antenna in the 125 to 525 MHz range. That includes GMRS radios, but NOT FRS (antennas are not removable). Note you need the right adapters, depending upon your antenna connection. I ordered it with SMA connectors for my radios. It is applicable to HAM bands of 2 meter and 70 cm. |
Question: | Is it a proper way to measure swr on ht radios? just put this unit in between ht and antenna ? i was told it breaks the ground and gives wrong results |
Answer: | I believe it does interfere with the ground plane. I have noticed that the positioning of my body, arms and hands as it relates to the positioning of the radio affects the SWR reading. So I'm not sure that you can rely how on the accuracy of the readings. Maybe if you have a base antenna setup at a distance from the radio, then you may have reliable SWR readings. |
Question: | Will this mode work with Bao-Feng bf-f8hp |
Answer: | This unit is a very good unit works well I would buy it again yes |

User questions & answers
Question: | This is not and actually antenna tuner is it |
Answer: | Nope...... Just an SWR Meter..... Helps in tuning..... NOT an automatic Tuner.... |
Question: | Mfj-822 - will this work on cb and 2m frequencies? thanks in advance for any help |
Answer: | Actually CB is considered "11" meters, not 10 meters. But yes it is in the HF band and this will work on it. (CB is 26.965 to 27.405, "10 meters" is 28.000-29.700) |
Question: | Is this a antenna tuner as well as a swr meter |
Answer: | This is not an antenna tuner, it ONLY reads Forward power and reflected power, and that shows the SWR. If you want a HF tuner, I would recommend getting the MFJ-969 Manual tuner. |
Question: | Does it have a switch to turn the light on and off |
Answer: | no does not have an off and on switch |
