12 best cb antennas

CB antennas, or Citizens Band antennas, are crucial components in CB radio communication systems. Here's some information related to CB antennas and their connection to accessories, CB two-way radios, portable audio-video, and electronics:

  1. Purpose and Function:

    • CB antennas are designed to transmit and receive radio signals in the Citizens Band frequency range, commonly used for short-distance, two-way communication.
  2. Types of CB Antennas:

    • Fiberglass Whip Antennas: These are flexible and durable antennas commonly used for mobile installations on vehicles.
    • Base-Loaded Antennas: Compact antennas with the coil located at the base, suitable for both mobile and fixed installations.
    • Center-Loaded Antennas: These antennas have the coil positioned in the middle and are often used for mobile installations.
    • Magnetic Mount Antennas: Designed with a magnetic base for easy attachment to metal surfaces, such as vehicle roofs.
  3. Installation:

    • CB antennas are installed on vehicles, buildings, or other structures to maximize signal transmission and reception.
    • Proper grounding is essential for effective antenna performance.
  4. Tuning and Adjustments:

    • Tuning a CB antenna involves adjusting its length or using a tuning device to match it to the CB radio's frequency.
    • Properly tuned antennas improve signal clarity and range.
  5. Accessories:

    • Coaxial Cable: Connects the CB radio to the antenna and is an essential accessory for efficient signal transfer.
    • Antenna Mounts: Secure the antenna to the vehicle or structure.
    • SWR Meter (Standing Wave Ratio): Used for tuning the antenna and measuring its efficiency.
  6. Mobile vs.Base Station Antennas:

    • Mobile CB antennas are designed for use on vehicles and are often mounted on the roof or trunk.
    • Base station antennas are larger and intended for fixed installations, such as on top of a building.
  7. Legal Considerations:

    • CB radio operation is regulated, and the length and power of CB antennas are subject to legal restrictions.
    • Users should be aware of and comply with local regulations when installing and operating CB antennas.
  8. Portable Audio-Video and Electronics:

    • CB radios, including their antennas, fall under the category of portable audio-video and electronics, as they facilitate mobile communication.

CB antennas play a vital role in enabling clear and reliable communication within the Citizens Band. Choosing the right type of antenna and ensuring proper installation are key factors in optimizing CB radio performance.

User questions & answers

Question: Is this a 26-28mhz aerial
Answer: Mine came with a long whip that was centered on the high end of 26 Mhz out of the box. You will need to trim the whip to get the desired frequency range. Out of the box, mine was not tuned to the CB band (26.9 - 27.4 Mhz). I had to trim about an inch or two off, roughly. To cover the 10m Amateur band (28-29 Mhz) you would have to trim a lot more off. But note that the bandwidth of this antenna will not cover the entire 10m band. I believe mine will tune from 26.9 to 27.5 Mhz while remaining below 2:1 swr.
Question: Work with uniden bearcat cb radio with sideband 980ssb? thanks
Answer: yes. i have it on mine
Question: how far is the range
Answer: I wouldn't give $5.00 for a truck load of K-30s. I bought one and cannot get the SWR low enough to use it. On channel 1 the SWR is 1.2 , on channel 20 its 2.5 and on channel 40 its 3.2. That will burn up a radio. I talked to three other people who got one and have the same problem. A radio tech told me a wilson 1000 is the best. I haven't yet got one and just stopped using my cb till I can afford another antenna.
Question: Do you have to drill a hole in truck to connect the cable from the anntena to cb or can it be run through window
Answer: No drilling necessary. The antenna has transmission line ("coax") already attached to it - I forget the exact length, it's about 15 feet...with a common CB antenna connector at the end. The connector is called a "PL-259", it's cylindrical and measures between 0.720" - 0.730" (a trifle under 3/4") at the widest point. You can easily pass this through a window, but you might want to consider feeding the coax transmission line in around a weatherseal on a tilting window or hatch. The coax is about 1/4" diameter and most hatch-style windows easily close and latch over it without damage. The base of the antenna is magnetic, and does a very good job of holding the antenna in place. I mention this because I read somewhere Ford is introducing aluminum body trucks, hopefully nowhere we need antennas. Magnetic mounts won't work on aluminum.

FL3-B Three Foot FireFly Antenna With Tuneable Tip (Black)

  • Lightweight
  • Easy-tune 'bare-hands tunable tip'
  • High-performance coil design
  • Flexible fiberglass tube

User questions & answers

Question: Is this firestik tip light compatible
Answer: The tip is the adjustment screw covered by a rubber cap so you can "match" it to your radio. I don't belive you can put a light on it, it definitely does not come with one on it.
Question: is this a self grounding antenna
Answer: The FL3-B antenna "requires a chassis grounded mount and horizontal metal ground plane (counterpoise)" to effectively transmit. Firestik does make a No-Ground-Plane needed version of this antenna. It is available as a kit in 3 or 4 foot lengths (models LG3-M2 or LG4-M2). The No-Ground-Plane variation must be used with the Firestik NGP (No-Ground-Plane) coax cable supplied in the kit. These NGP kits may be mounted to any surface such as metal, wood, fiberglass, plastic, etc. You do not have to provide a ground plane, nor is it necessary to chassis ground the mount of a Firestik NGP antenna.
Question: So what exactly is included in the package? Is it just the antenna or does this include the antenna and spring
Answer: Just antenna. Order spring extra.
Question: What kind of range are you getting with this
Answer: Your range is very dependant on many other factors, but when setup right about 5 miles with good trajectory to your buddies. Dont cheap out on a radio, cobra 29ltd or galaxy 959 i would recomend, then turn the mod all the way up on them, its very very worth it, these two radios are great for this and power out very well

User questions & answers

Question: is it magnetic or does it have glue
Answer: The base is attached to the top of your car or truck by a strong magnet. No glue is involved. This device is designed to be easily removable and moved to another vehicle or protected from car washes.
Question: Judt got this and i get just static when mounted on my truckroof
Answer: Static is normal on CB radios, Some days are much clearer than others, mainly due to skip conditions. Try adjusting RF gain if your CB has one or use the squelch control. Both are forms that adjust to mask out noise but will reduce pickup ability on the receiving end. It is somewhat of an art form. Experiment with one or both.
Question: will this work on Uniden 800 MHz 300-Channel Base Mobile Scanner (BC355N
Answer: no, CB antenna's are tuned to 26 to 27 Mhz, You need a scanner antenna, most of which are tuned to 25 to 1300 Mhz
Question: Can I tune the Antenna
Answer: The top of the antenna is adjustable via a set screw to tune if you use an SWR meter.

User questions & answers

Question: Is the retractable version good or bad? There's a lot of mixed reviews
Answer: The antenna I receuved was not a retractable, the one I have works superbly! The non retractable one is very limber, it will stand straight up and down but it's not so stiff that you it won't flex quite a bit. I feel any retractable antenna would diminish the value of using an antenna like this one. If you need a short antenna, then buy a short antenna, they are cheap and I have multiple antennas for multiple situations. If I'm working a festival with base station close, I run a short rubber duck, if I'm mobile/driving and will be far from a repeater or using simplex. I use this. I would recommend you buy a non retractable.
Question: Is it safe to transmit with the antenna fully retracted? Can it harm the radio
Answer: NO! The equation for an antenna length is: 2808/frequency=length in inches As stated by the Mfg: "When you are only receiving and not transmitting you can conveniently retract the antenna down to only 4 inches." So the only frequency that has a SWR of 1:1 is around 700 Mhz. If you increase the length up to about 6.3" than you could Tx at: 440 Mhz but that's it. You need to increase the length up to 12.7" for 220 Mhz. You need to increase all the way to the 16" mark for 175 Mhz. But that's not going to get you under the 3:1 SWR you will need for 2M at 146 Mhz. For that you need to get to a length of 19.2". So for all practical purposes this antenna is not suitable for Ham radio TX. Or even the MARS applications at the 150's Mhz range.
Question: is their a better antenna than this one
Answer: As a whip? Not really. Other types; then yes. A Nelson Slim Jim is my favorite. String it up a tree 10' high and i can hit a repeater 60 miles away on 8W with a 5-9 (thats perfect) come back. With this 771 whip, i can hit a repeater 30 miles away with same results... But think of it as I live in florida and the higher the antenna, the better (less trees and buildings interfering). A beam antenna will concentrate signals one direction. My 3 el handi is what i use to pick up AMSAT chatter. So the word "best" is purely up to the task. I have this antenna on my UV-5RTP unless im backpacking or tracking. Compared to all whips, this one is my favorite. Get it.
Question: Amazon says it has a max power of 10w but Baofeng has it at 5w. which is correct
Answer: BOTH ARE CORRECT. The BaoFeng radio puts out 5 watts maximum. This antenna is capable of handling up to 10 watts maximum. Your BaoFeng radio will still be transmitting at 5 watts, but if you ever chose to connect this antenna to some other radio that produced up to a 10 watt signal, it would still work. Any higher and you would fry the radio.

Extend the Range of Your Communication

Most Nagoya antennas will increase your radio's transmitting gain compared to their factory antenna.

In most cases: the longer the antenna is the better the antenna is capable of boosting weak frequencies and receiving difficult to hear stations. Shorter antennas offer more portability and convenience, while longer antennas generally perform better.

User questions & answers

Question: How long is the coax
Answer: 16-18’
Question: Can you use this with gmrs systems
Answer: For gmrs you're going to want a genuine Nagoya UT-72. Btech has the genuine article. I swept it with a VNA and it has very low SWR through the GMRS band. I also have a Nagoya mag mount with the SMA connector - the UT-308UV and it's not as broad on UHF. Good for the 70cm ham band, but it's SWR doesn't stretch into GMRS range as well.
Question: can this be used on a DX2547 base radio
Answer: Your gonna find its a damn great antenna but most base stations have a taller antenna but paired with my Stryker 497 getting 17 miles roughly
Question: How would this work on a cobra
Answer: I run a Cobra 29 LX w/ an Astatic RD104 mic and this Stryker antenna. SWR’s are near flat across all 40, TX & RX are amazing. I definitely recommend this antenna.
