User questions & answers

Question: Hi: I'm looking for a manual for this Marantz PMD201. Do you know where I can get one? Or do you have one to sell? Or download to me
Answer: The PMD670 is a larger unit and it has RCA Line inputs. The PMD661 is smaller and uses a stereo mini-plug for line level input. Both recorders have XLR inputs for mic-level signals (the PMD661's XLR inputs can also take a line level signal). If you want to use the internal mics, the PMD670 has a mono mic and the PMD661 has a built-in set of stereo mics. The PMD670 records on CF (Compact Flash) cards. The PMD661 uses smaller SD cards. If you want to record very high bitrate music, the PMD661 can record up to PCM-24 (96KHz), although the PMD670 can record WAV files up to 16 bit, 48Hz, which is still higher than ordinary music CDs. Both can record in various qualities of MP3. If you intend to record while carrying the recorder, or at a very high bitrate, the PMD661 would be the better choice, although it is more expensive. If you are not carrying the recorder with you as you record, the PMD661 has less of an advantage. I personally have used the PMD670 for years and have found it to be a very rugged and reliable recorder. I like having RCA inputs for line level as most mixers also use RCA connections for their line level outputs. The PMD670 has a larger display that is easier to read. I also like that it is larger as someone can't just stick it in their pocket and run off with it! I hope this is helpful. Best Wishes, Steve Dean Aurora Recording
Question: The description says it will take a 1/8th mike plug. Is that an RCA or a 3.5 mm size
Answer: AC Adapter, Class 2 Transformer, Input: 120V - 60Hz 15W, Output: 4.5VDC 700mA
Question: Does this have 3 heads
Answer: Yes. You can't record while playing a CD at the same time, though. Best Wishes, Steve Dean Aurora Recording
Question: does anyone know if this specific tape deck is in mono or stereo
Answer: Depending on your genre-the BEST you can afford. Sony used to sell a professional stereo condenser 'recording' mike (not for singing solos-output too low for an amp) that you could adjust the L+R Axis as well as the input levels (reduction needed for Rock Concerts). Runs on a simple AAA battery seemingly forever and is wired with a highly shielded single molded cord with a Left and Right 1/4" TS plug (your typical guitar cord). Has built in pop filter and battery test led. Used on several occasions-no detectable distortion or hiss and the frequency range is superior in specs. The included self contained mic is only good for meetings but is perhaps slightly better than an ole-fashioned Panasonic portable cassette player. There's very little this cannot do. Two caveat though. One is the rechargeable battery pack is expensive (not included). I devised an adapter I could latch onto a sealed lead acid battery (think emergency lights or UPS backup) if needed. I prefer straight power from the line cord. {beware of polarity-it's reversed in the schematic}. Two would be it's fussy about CD quality discs. My recommendation use only SONY CD-Rs to avoid a failure writing to disc. Haven't tried a Sony CD-RW. This last disadvantage is it's Achilles heel. I guess I should mention you cannot copy CD's internally, there is no hard drive or flash memory to contain the original image. Once Finalized (needed to play on other audio CD players) you can make copies via a PC or other means. Finalization takes approximately 2 minutes to complete.

The mixed down file will then export automatically as a mp3 to your specified location.
Question: Will this work with a MAC
Answer: I have found that the capture doesn't have speakers so it is difficult to get the MAC to accept it and bring it back through. Especially since my mac doesn't have a cd-rom, I have been improvising myself to death. If anyone else has been doing this, you might try to find a way to create a speaker format

User questions & answers

Question: can I plug this into my computer
Answer: When recording a mono player to a your computer, use a mono to mono 3.5mm (1/8") phone cable. This will allow you to record the single audio channel from the cassette recorder to the computer's stereo with the same signal for both the left and right channels. You should also be able to set the recording software to record in mono.
Question: Want to purchase a recorder for my elderly father to tape his memoirs. Would this be a good find
Answer: Yes. This recorder is NOT THE BEST, BUT CERTAINLY NOT THE WORST. I got it for Taping Music. I am a Musician and Singer and it DOES NOT DO WELL FOR THAT, BUT. For Talking, Yes. It would be good. One tip. Don't hold the Microphone too close to your mouth, It will blur when you record. Hold it a few inches away and it will be fine. Talking records much better than singing, or music. So if you want it for that, Yes. And the price is good, and you can use Battries or the Outlet. Hope this helps. Annie/ Houston, Tx
Question: is it eletric & battery
Answer: Yes. Runs on both AC and battery.
Question: Could I plug my phone into the mic jack and then record some songs from phone to a cassette
Answer: Not easily, no. The mic jack on this recorder is mono only. So a standard 3.5mm stereo cable won't do the trick. You would need a 3.5mm stereo to 3.5mm mono cable (or adapter). The resulting audio, of course, will be in mono only. Also, the recording head on this cassette recorder is very, very poor. I wanted to record audio for my truck and the quality was just way to low for music. It is really better suited for voice recording.
