13 best phono amps
A phono preamplifier, often referred to as a phono amp or phono stage, is an essential component in a turntable-based audio setup. It plays a crucial role in the reproduction of vinyl records. Here is what you should know about phono amps in the context of turntables, home audio, and electronics:
Purpose: Phono amps are designed to amplify the low-level signals generated by a turntable's cartridge when it reads the grooves of a vinyl record. The signal from the cartridge is extremely weak, so it needs to be boosted to a level suitable for playback through speakers or headphones.
Equalization: Vinyl records are encoded with a specific equalization curve (RIAA equalization) during the mastering process. Phono preamps include an equalization stage to reverse this curve, ensuring that the audio playback is tonally accurate.
Gain: Phono preamps provide gain (amplification) to bring the weak phono signal up to a standard line-level signal, typically around 1 to 2 volts. The amount of gain can be adjustable on some models to accommodate different cartridge types.
Types of Phono Preamps:
- Built-In Preamps: Some turntables come with a built-in phono preamp, making it easy to connect the turntable directly to a set of speakers or a receiver with line-level inputs.
- External Preamps: In setups where the turntable lacks a built-in preamp or when audiophiles want more control over the sound, external phono preamps are used. These can be standalone units or integrated into amplifiers or receivers.
MM and MC Compatibility: Phono amps are often designed to work with either Moving Magnet (MM) or Moving Coil (MC) cartridges. It's important to match the cartridge type to the appropriate phono preamp, as they have different signal levels and impedance characteristics.
Adjustable Settings: Higher-end phono preamps may offer adjustable settings for cartridge loading, capacitance, and gain to fine-tune the sound to the listener's preferences and cartridge specifications.
Signal Quality: The quality of a phono preamp can significantly impact the overall sound quality of a vinyl playback system. High-quality preamps minimize noise, distortion, and coloration, preserving the warmth and fidelity of vinyl recordings.
Connectivity: Phono preamps typically provide RCA output connectors for connecting to an amplifier or receiver, but some may also include balanced XLR outputs for even better noise rejection.
Grounding: Proper grounding is essential to minimize unwanted hum or noise in a turntable setup. Most phono preamps have a ground terminal for this purpose.
Budget and High-End Options: Phono preamps are available in a wide price range to suit various budgets and audio quality expectations.High-end models may incorporate advanced circuitry and materials to achieve superior sound.
In summary, a phono amp or phono preamplifier is a critical component in a turntable-based audio system. It amplifies the weak signal from a turntable's cartridge, applies the necessary equalization, and prepares it for playback through speakers or headphones. The choice of a phono preamp should consider factors such as cartridge type, signal quality, adjustability, and compatibility with the overall audio setup.

User questions & answers
Question: | Does this thing have an/off switch or do you need to plug/unplug everytime you use it |
Answer: | no switch. You can plug/unplug, I leave it plugged in all the time. |
Question: | Unit works fine for awhile and then starts outputting static, even with no input connected. I've tried it with several amps with the same results |
Answer: | Most likely people who are having noise problems it is because of ground loop isolation problem. If you have a ground loop isolation problem grounding the preamp box is unlikely to help. Without getting technical, what you want to buy is a ground loop isolator or a humm eliminator; both the ground loop isolator and humm eliminator tackles the cause of the noise at the fundamental source of the problem, depending on your audio setup, one maybe easier to use than the other. To use the ground loop isolator or the humm eliminator they generally come with instructions, or you can google this topic. If the noise in your audio system isn't fixed by using this solution the first time, try putting the ground loop isolator and humm eliminator at various points in your audio system. Also you can talk to audio people and get advice about how to fix ground loop problems from people who setup big audio systems, for concerts and such; if you talk to the average electronic garage shop audio enthusiast you are likely to get bad advice, i.e., meaningless explanations. Also caution must be used when Googling this topic, much of the discussion, advice and explanation on this topic is bogus, you can get a general correct feel of this topic if you read a number of explanations. Also one more thing that can cause a "popping noise" is that you have too much gain, this is a phono amp and the gain is huge, it takes a 3mV and makes it 2Vp-p this is a gain of around 100 to 200, if you gain up the audio signal too much then the signal out of your amplifier runs out of head room and clips, this can cause a popping sound, essentially you have too much gain. If this is occurring you need to either buy a preamp with less gain or attenuate the signal before it gets to the preamp. If this is a problem, too much gain, you can buy preamps with gain control. |
Question: | My turntable has very quiet output. Will this device help boost the volume |
Answer: | Yes, indeed. If your need was like mine (no built-in pre-amp on the turntable and no specifically dedicated phono input on your amplifier) you will find this unit to be the perfect solution to needed amplification of the turntable's output. Don't forget to hook up the ground wire as directed or you may wind up putting unwanted noise into the audio. |
Question: | My amp DOES have a Phono Input, but my cartridges are low output. Can I use this to boost the signal using the Phono Input to reduce audible hiss |
Answer: | No, you can't. This is a phono preamp with RIAA playback equalization that amplifies the signal about 100 times, so it essentially does what your built-in phono preamp does. The output signal from the separate preamp is equalized to a nominally "flat" frequency response and the amplified signal level will overload and probably damage your built-in phono preamp. Plug it into any other stereo line input on your system (AUX, CD, DVD, TAPE, VCR, etc.), but NOT the PHONO input! If you need higher signal gain, maybe look at phono preamps from ART or TCC that have output level controls. If you use moving-coil (MC) cartridges, you need a preamp specifically designed for them...they require at least 55 dB (over 500 times) signal gain vs. about 40 dB (100 times) for moving-magnet (MM) cartridges. Noise becomes a critical issue with MC cartridges because of their extremely low signal output, so good-quality cables and good turntable grounding are essential. |

User questions & answers
Question: | If I have a record player without a Preamp, will this help me with hooking it up to a Sonos |
Answer: | You can hook it up to anything with a red and white connection. Or if you get the rca to 3.5mm jack then you can hook it up to anything with an input slot. I used this on my realistic lab 440 which doesn't have a preamp. Once I connected the ground from my turntable into the ground slot on this amp, my music sounded loud and clear. |
Question: | mp |
Answer: | Turntables (with typical magnetic cartridges) have very low signal output (a few thousandths of a volt). Records have the bass reduced to provide enough room on the surface for the recorded grooves, and the treble boosted to reduce the surface noise level when played back. A phono preamplifier performs two jobs: - It boosts the small signal from the turntable by about 50 to 100 times (producing a "line level" signal) so it can be used by typical receivers or amplifiers.- It also boosts the bass and reduces the treble according to an industry standard (the RIAA equalization curve) to restore the signal from the record to its original frequency response. The Pyle PP999 is just an inexpensive phono preamp, nothing special. Phono preamps can range from $20 on up to whatever you're willing to pay for ultra-high quality. Some manufacturers make "USB" phono preamps that have A/D (analog-to-digital) converters built in and connect to a computer's USB port. Most of these provide "CD quality" conversion (16-bits at 44kHz or 48kHz). These may be adequate for digitizing your vinyl, but many computer sound systems can provide up to 24-bit, 192 kHz conversion depending on the software you use (much higher quality), by connecting the preamp output to the computer's line input. Don't just convert directly to MP3 files...you'll lose too much detail compared to the original vinyl sound. It takes almost no time to make an MP3 copy of a high bit-rate WAV or FLAC (lossless) file, but it'll take you an hour to make ANY digital copy of an LP, so do it the best you can the first time! |
Question: | So this is a stupid question, I plug my RCA wires coming from my turntable into the Amp. But where do I plug the speaker wires into on the Amp |
Answer: | TurnTable==>PreAmp==>Receiver/Amplifier==>SpeakersThe 'Pyle PP999' is the "Preamp". The Turntable is plugged into the PP999 INPUT and the PP999 OUTPUT plugs directly into any (non Phono) INPUT on the receiver. Your Receiver allows you to switch between different music-sources, contains the primary-amplifier and distributes the final sound out to the speakers(and subwoofer). The Receiver should have multiple inputs for receiving signals from eg. CD, Tape, VCR, etc. In my experience those labels are for convenience and interchangeable with the exception of a "Phono" input. NOTE: If the receiver has a "Phono" input then there's a built-in preamp. If your using an external preamp (Pyle PP999) do NOT plug it into the Receiver's 'Phono' input, it could cause damage. I plug the preamp for the turntable into the Receiver's 'VCR' or 'TV' inputs. |
Question: | I have the Pyle turntable and Pyle stereo but they don't work together--VERY low sound--so is this the missing piece |
Answer: | Turntables (with typical magnetic cartridges) have very low signal output (a few thousandths of a volt). Records have the bass reduced to provide enough room on the surface for the recorded grooves, and the treble boosted to reduce the surface noise level when played back. Most modern receivers DO NOT have the right inputs to deal with this signal (no "phono" input). User questions & answers
Question: | input sensitivity |
Answer: | How loud it will get greatly depends on your speaker sensitivity. If you are using very efficient speakers it will fill a medium size room with sound. My speakers have a sensitivity of 99 db and it will fill the medium size living and dining room with plenty enough sound for my liking. If you are talking about a large gathering of people in a large area I am not sure this amplifier will fit your needs. |
Question: | Can the VU meters sensitivity be adjusted to deflect (jump) more for aesthetic reasons |
Answer: | Is this the one with point to point wiring and the tube cage?---------YES. point to point wiring and come with the tube cage. |
Question: | w? Seems light. Is that enough to power a large speaker or is this amp for powered speakers only |
Answer: | Most turntables will need an additional pre-amplifier to boost their signal before plugging them into the Reisong A10. However, if you happen to own the Audio Technica AT-LP60, which contains it's own inboard phono pre-amplifier, you won't need a separate phono pre-amp. |
Question: | How loud can it get? Is it adequate for just bedroom listening or can it be used for a party |
Answer: | Can i replace 6n2j tubes with 12ax7/ecc83 tubes? ----YES. But you please pay attention to adjusting the electronic pin position when you replace them. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Where is the Input located on this? I only see output |
Answer: | Mine appears to be coated aluminum... |
Question: | Will this system increase the volume of my phono |
Answer: | I have not used a wireless sub of any kind with this unit, but I would be surprised if this worked with a BT sub. The BT on this unit as far as I have read will pair with a device as an “input” to the receiver for audio but will not transmit to an external device. I would not count on using it this way. |
Question: | Can the amp wake up from standby when it receives a signal |
Answer: | Yes I am driving elac unifi ub5 with this. Kept it on 8ohm but can be switched to 4 ohms if you don’t want to live adventurously |
Question: | Does the volume control the output of the line levels, as well as the headphone |
Answer: | I just purchased this receiver. N803 and YES, hooked up my EQ. Here is how. 1st depends on how many INPUTS you have on your EQ. Mine has 6. Plug in devices you have into INPUTS you have on back of EQ. Phono, Tape, Tuner, Aux, etc. Device name is only to help you remember what is hocked up. where. You could plug in CD player into Tuner INPUT. It's just a memory thing. Now your OUTPUT on the EQ, hook to the back of your RECEIVER IN LINE 2 OR 3. NOT 1. You need an OUTPUT. This would be like adding a reel to reel to tape to. But you don't have to. [1 doesn't have an output.] I hooked up to [Line2] on receiver. Turn dial on receiver to [Line 2]. Control your devices you want to listen to on EQ, not the receiver. Receiver will always be [Line 2]. this set up allows you, if your EQ has memory to program each device, save the settings from one device to another. Change settings by a push of a button. You get double the punch. EQ plus the base and treble on Receiver. No sub-woffer needed. Good luck, have fun. I am |

User questions & answers
Question: | My audio technica only has 2 rca jacks. how can the connection be made |
Answer: | As long as your turntable has RCA inputs, this should work just fine. Hookup is simple and amplifier is easy to use. |
Question: | Will it work with a jvc la55 turn table |
Answer: | There is no on-off switch. The unit draws very little power from its wall-wart power supply which would remain powered-up even with the unit switched off. I recommend leaving it on or controlling it along with the other audio equipment. Powering it up while monitoring its output results in a loud "thump." |
Question: | Where would i plug this into my receiver? my denison receiver does not have phono plugs. it does have an aux, cd, and vcr though. which plug |
Answer: | You can't "hurt" anything with any of these settings. Of course, you want to use the 'phono' or direct output of the turntable, not the 'line level' or amplified output. just try the 100pf (I think this is more 'standard') and listen for a while. Then try the 200pf setting and see if it sounds better. I think the effects would be mainly small, possibly none. |
Question: | Will this work with the U-Turn Orbit |
Answer: | Yes, you need a preamp to drive the aux channel on your amp. This one work great. |

Fresh Sound for Vintage Record Players
The GOgroove phono preamp boosts your turntable's phono audio level up to a more speaker/stereo receiver-friendly line level, giving you better volume and increased sound quality. If you're planning on hooking up your turntable to a computer, stereo receiver, bookshelf speakers or any other modern audio equipment, you're going to want this preamp to get the high sound quality that you expect from vinyl.
Modernize Your Equipment
You'll want the preamp to connect to the phono output of the turntable and the line input of the receiver/speakers. And even newer turntables that may feature a built-in preamp probably aren't going to give you the highest quality sound that could be achieved from an external preamp.
Clear Sounding Audio
Complete with RIAA equalization which recognizes that the phono preamp creates smooth equalization for balanced, clear audio. Helps limit distortion and for the best quality sound, make sure to securely plug in all cables.
Quick, Easy Setup
You don't need to be a sound engineer or techie to understand this preamp's setup process. It takes only a minute to power up the preamp with it's included 12 Volt DC Adapter. After that , it's just a matter of using RCA cables (NOT INCLUDED) to hook the preamp to both your turntable and your stereo receiver, speakers or other audio device.
Product description
- Schiit Mani gives you the flexibility you need for both moving-magnet and moving-coil cartridges, together with exceptionally accurate, and low-noise performance.
- Accepting All Cartridges!
Many low-cost phono preamps are only good for typical moving-magnet (MM) cartridges. They don’t have the gain needed for moving coil (MC), or the flexibility for high-output MM cartridges like Decca, or high-output MC cartridges that that might end up somewhere in the middle of the gain range. Mani, with 4 switchable gain modes, (30, 42, 47, and 59dB) is ready for any cartridge you can throw at it. - Accurate, Quiet Passive RIAA Network
Mani’s RIAA network is implemented fully passively. What that means is there are no poles in the feedback loop, for more consistent sonic performance. Coupled with precision 2% film capacitors, 0.5% thin-film resistors, and super low-noise gain stages, Mani delivers superb accuracy and performance, even well beyond its modest price. - Designed and Assembled in USA
By “designed and assembled in USA" this is what we mean: the vast majority of the total production cost of Mani—chassis, boards, transformers, assembly, etc—goes to US companies manufacturing in the US. Our chassis are made minutes from our facility. Our PCBs are done just over the hill from us, or done in NorCal. Yes, the wall-warts are made in China, but there's some give and take at this price point. - 2-Year Warranty
Mani is covered by a limited warranty that covers parts and labor for two years. That’s 2x the coverage of most amps in this price range.
- Can be used with moving-magnet (MM) cartridges, moving-coil (MC) cartridges, or high-output cartridges
- Consistent sonic performance, super low-noise. 115VAC, USA Plug.
- Four switchable gain modes: (30, 42, 47, and 59dB)
- Accurate, quiet, passive RIAA Network
- Designed and assembled in the USA from high quality components
User questions & answers
Question: | How do I order this in the black version |
Answer: | The manufacturer sells the silver and black versions directly from their website. |
Question: | Hello. can it be ordered in silver, 230v australian plug? many thanks, gustavo |
Answer: | Direct from their website yes. |
Question: | Ask please i have a pro ject carbon dc connected to my denon dra 800h if ill add this pre amp the sound quality will improve!? Thanks |
Answer: | It should. It is WAY BETTER sound quality than any built-in phono pre-amp on a receiver. I tried to connect my turntable to the phono input on my Yamaha RX-v685. The sound was uninspiring (to me). I then got the Schiit Mani and plugged my Pro Ject turntable into it and fed the output to the Yamaha Aux-in port (line level). The sound quality difference was dramatic. If you have a nice vinyl collection and turntable, get the Mani. You won't be disappointed. If you have a built-in pre or phono input on your receiver, you can compare and see for yourself as I did. |
Question: | Any one know if these are the latest version? v |
Answer: | I believe it is the latest version since it is coming from the manufacturer itself |

User questions & answers
Question: | How well would this work with 6 ohm bookshelf speakers |
Answer: | It would work. I’m using 8 ohms right now and I tried 4ohms also and it worked. |
Question: | Does it have a connection for a powered subwoofer |
Answer: | Most subwoofers have speaker level connectors. You connect all four speaker wires out from the amp into the sub and then there are four connectors to go out to the speakers from the sub. Then you can set the pass through levels on the subwoofer for the optimum sound you want. The sub handles the low tones and passes the higher tones on to your speakers. It works great. Plenty of tutorials on youtube and such. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Can I use this preamp on a Numark pt1 scratch turntable |
Answer: | Yes you can,but this device is cheap as crap. It didn’t work fresh out the box.It only worked with the 9v battery. The DC plug input had like a shortage or something.I had seen all the 1 star reviews but I tried my luck and yeah, no luck at all. |
Question: | would the preamp work with a shure c608 microphone or the impedance is to much off. 2.what is the current draw?. 3 how long the battery lasts |
Answer: | You need to purchase a preamp that is designed for the input that you are using. Microphone inputs and phono inputs are not the same. Behringer designs different preamps for each of those functions. Check them out. |
Question: | I have a turntable with RCA jacks out, then Logitech speakers with a converter from a headphone-type jack to RCA jacks. Do I just need a preamp |
Answer: | Yes. You can hook the turntable's RCA jacks to the speaker RCA jacks and get audio. However, if it's an older turntable it may not be grounded, and you will hear a humming sound. Also, your audio will be very low in volume. The pre-amp will eliminate the humming sound, and give you the volume you desire. |
Question: | I have an Audio Technica AT-LP60 and Lepai LP-2020A+ Tripath TA2020 Class-T Hi-Fi Audio Amplifier with Power Supply, would I still need a preamp |
Answer: | I have the Bluetooth model so your internal pre-amp may or may not be different but I route my turntable through a midi device with onboard sampling and the built in preamp is not enough to boost the signal to useable levels. You can test yours out but I know I need a preamp. |
