10 best direct drive turntables
Direct drive turntables are a type of record player commonly used in home audio setups. They are characterized by a motor directly connected to the turntable platter, which provides a stable and consistent rotation speed. Here's some information about direct drive turntables:
Motor Placement: In a direct drive turntable, the motor is located underneath the platter, directly driving its rotation. This setup allows for precise control over the speed of the platter.
Speed Stability: One of the main advantages of direct drive turntables is their excellent speed stability. This means that once the desired speed is set, it remains consistent, which is crucial for accurate playback of vinyl records.
Quick Start and Stop: Direct drive turntables have the ability to start and stop quickly. This is particularly useful for DJs who need to manipulate the playback speed during a performance.
Reverse Play: Some direct drive turntables have a feature that allows for reverse play, where the record spins in the opposite direction. This can be used for creative effects in DJing.
Torque: Direct drive turntables are known for their high torque, which refers to the rotational force provided by the motor. High torque allows for the quick acceleration and deceleration of the platter.
Less Maintenance: Unlike belt drive turntables, which have a belt that can wear out over time and require replacement, direct drive turntables typically require less maintenance.
DJ-Friendly: Direct drive turntables are popular among DJs due to their ability to withstand the rigors of scratching and other performance techniques. They provide the necessary torque and stability for these demanding applications.
Anti-Skate and Tracking Force: Many direct drive turntables come with features like anti-skate controls and adjustable tracking force, which help to ensure that the stylus tracks the grooves of a record accurately.
Pitch Control: Direct drive turntables often include pitch control, allowing users to adjust the playback speed slightly. This is important for beatmatching and mixing in DJing.
Availability: Direct drive turntables are widely available through various retailers, both in physical stores and online. They come in a range of prices to suit different budgets and preferences.
Direct drive turntables are favored for their reliability, accuracy, and suitability for DJing. They are a popular choice for both audiophiles and professional DJs looking for a high-performance vinyl playback solution. When choosing a direct drive turntable, consider factors like torque, speed stability, and additional features that may be important for your specific use case.

User questions & answers
Question: | Can I plug this turntable into powered speakers and have sound or do I need a receiver |
Answer: | You can use it in both ways. |
Question: | I have always owned belt drive turntables. I have read that direct drive can be noisy. How is this one as far as rumble |
Answer: | My previous turntable was a very nice AR belt drive table, and I had the same concern about direct drive rumble. Not any more. The AT-LP120XUSB is dead silent. It sounds incredible. |
Question: | So, since this turntable has a built in preamp, does this mean I can use passive speakers? Or do I need powered speakers |
Answer: | No. You'll need powered speakers or you'll need to plug it into an amp to use passive speakers. "Preamp" = pre (before) amplifier. Preamps and phono amps take the very low signal from the stylus and amplify it to a level that an amplifier can use. AND (the reason record players need phono-specific preamps instead of a standard preamp) the preamp/phonoamp also decodes the RIAA format that all albums since the 1950s use, which is proprietary and needs a specific type of decoding to play the music. |
Question: | Ok,..in plain english,...can i plug this tt into external speakers? that's all i want it for. if yes,...what type of speakers |
Answer: | Yes you can... The turntable has a built-in preamp. You want to buy powered speakers. They sell tons of them now. The best I have heard were KRK powered speakers. To get a good idea of what’s available, check out the needledoctor or crutchfield websites. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Does this have a built-in preamp |
Answer: | Most DJ professional turntables will not have a preamp. Those are inside of our DJ mixers. It’s easy enough to get a preamp or a mixer if you plan on ripping sound files. |
Question: | Where is this product manufactured |
Answer: | Manufactured in China. Designed in Japan. Hope it helps |
Question: | What headshell can I buy as a replacement |
Answer: | The bearings are extremely easy to adjust and are designed to be slightly tightened. A miniature screwdriver and a needle nose pliers are all that is needed. loosen the outer ring and then tighten the internal screw 1 or 2 degrees. They should not be tight, just tight enough to not jiggle. I own 8 technic 1200 turntables a few Vestax turntables and a few belt drive audiophile belt drive turntables. All the dj style turntables need to have bearings adjusted periodically. Completly Normal. Standard Headshells are readily available. Audiophile headshells are also made. |
Question: | How does this pioneer plx-1000 compare to the audio-technica at-lp |
Answer: | I think the best answer to which table is "best" depends on your preferences. Am not a DJ, home listening only. Recently traded a good sounding ATLP 1240 (never used the internal preamp) for an excellent sounding Pioneer PLX 1000. The AT's internal preamp seemed add a "cloud" or "veil" to the sound in my system. Even when switched to the phono out position the signal still passes through the AT's preamp circuitry. The Pioneer with straight analog output (no internal preamp circuitry to mess with the signal) sounds much "cleaner." In my opinion as a user of both, if "good" vs "excellent" sound works for you get the AT. It's a better value than the Pioneer. |
Product features
High-torque direct drive professional turntable (black)
- The PLX-1000 is precision engineered for the booth, drawing on 50 years’ experience of making high-end turntables. The result is a familiar layout with some next generation improvements, including a high-torque direct drive system, multi-pitch control, club-grade build and sound quality, and detachable power and audio cables. It’s solidly built for excellent vibration damping and ultra-precise, high-grade audio playback.
- Simply add your choice of cartridge and stylus to the PLX-1000 (not included) and combine with your mixer for an ideal setup for turntablists. An ideal match for DJs is the handmade PC-X10 (sold separately).
Turn the Tables
The high-torque direct drive ensures stable rotation and exceptional control – and it reaches 33⅓ rpm in just 0.3 seconds thanks to a starting torque of 4.5kg/cm (or more).
Excellent Sound Design
The PLX-1000’s heavy-mass, die-cast zinc chassis prevents resonance and vibrations. The lower part of the unit is reinforced with 8mm-thick resin, plus 9mm-thick, vibration-damping material at the base. Product features
THE WORLD’S FIRST BLUETOOTH APTX HD TURNTABLE
Built-in Bluetooth aptX HD liberates your record player from the hi-fi rack. With the freedom to place Alva TT anywhere you like, your records are invited into the lime-light. Your music can be streamed from Alva TT to any compatible Bluetooth receiver at up to 24bit/48kHz Hi-Res quality.
INTEGRATED PHONOSTAGE
Alva TT’s custom designed, integrated phonostage simplifies process of a physical connection - removing the need for extra boxes in your set-up. This phonostage builds on the success of our award-winning, 5-star standalone pre-amplifiers, the Alva Solo and Alva Duo, reducing unwanted noise while preserving the characteristic warmth of your vinyl.
MC CARTRIDGE PRE INSTALLED
The cartridge on the Alva TT is pre-installed. There’s no tricky set-up needed, and it’s perfectly matched to the other components in the turntable.
We opted for a High-output Moving Coil (MC) cartridge with an exposed cantilever design. It reduces unwanted resonance and vibration, delivers high levels of gain and outstanding musical detail during playback.
PROTECT YOUR TURNTABLE
Your records are your prized possessions, so we include a detachable dust cover with the Alva TT to protect whatever your spinning.
DIRECT DRIVE
Rather than go for a Belt Drive system with the ALVA TT, we opted for a medium-torque Direct Drive. Over time, the elastic used on a Belt Drive turntable can stretch and will need to be replaced. As a result of this wear, Belt Drive turntables traditionally have a less accurate playback speed than their Direct Drive cousins. This isn’t a problem on the ALVA TT – it has just 0.06% Wow and Flutter. This means a far better pitch stability – particularly during longer, more sustained musical notes.
POM PLATTER
Complimenting the Direct Drive motor, the platter on the Alva TT is both dense and heavy. It’s made from Polyoxymethylene (POM), an high-tech engineering thermoplastic used in precision parts requiring high stiffness and excellent dimensional stability. The weight of the platter, coupled with our medium torque Direct Drive motor, ensures excellent speed stability during playback of your records.
