11 best home theater subwoofer

A home theater subwoofer is a specialized speaker designed to reproduce low-frequency sounds, commonly referred to as bass, in a home theater audio system. These speakers are a crucial component for enhancing the overall audio experience by delivering deep and powerful bass that regular speakers cannot replicate.

Here are some key features and considerations related to home theater subwoofers:

  1. Low-Frequency Reproduction: Subwoofers are dedicated to reproducing the lowest frequencies in the audio spectrum, typically ranging from about 20Hz to 200Hz or lower. They are responsible for creating the rumbling, impactful bass that adds depth and realism to movie soundtracks and music.

  2. Types of Subwoofers: There are two main types of home theater subwoofers:

    • Powered Subwoofers: These have a built-in amplifier and are the most common type. They are easy to set up and offer more control over bass output.
    • Passive Subwoofers: These require an external amplifier and are less common in modern home theater setups.
  3. Placement: Proper placement of the subwoofer is crucial for optimal bass performance. Subwoofers can be located anywhere in the room, but optimal placement varies depending on the room's size and layout. Common positions include corners, along walls, or near the main speakers.

  4. Frequency Response: Subwoofers are rated based on their frequency response, which indicates the range of frequencies they can reproduce effectively. Look for a subwoofer with a low-frequency response to ensure it can handle deep bass notes.

  5. Subwoofer Size: The size of the subwoofer's driver (the speaker cone) impacts its ability to move air and produce bass. Larger drivers tend to produce deeper and more powerful bass, but they may also require more space.

  6. Wattage and Amplification: Consider the subwoofer's power rating in watts. A higher wattage generally results in louder and more impactful bass. Powered subwoofers have their own built-in amplifiers.

  7. Crossover Frequency: Subwoofers often feature adjustable crossover settings that determine the point at which they take over bass reproduction from the main speakers. Properly setting this crossover point ensures a seamless blend between the subwoofer and main speakers.

  8. Room Acoustics: The acoustics of your home theater room can significantly affect the performance of your subwoofer. Experiment with placement and room treatments (e.g., acoustic panels) to optimize sound quality.

  9. Wired vs. Wireless: Some modern subwoofers offer wireless connectivity options, reducing the need for long audio cables. This can be convenient for placement flexibility.

  10. Brand and Quality: Choose a reputable brand known for producing high-quality audio equipment. Quality subwoofers are built to last and provide reliable performance.

A well-chosen home theater subwoofer can greatly enhance your overall audio experience, adding depth and realism to movies, music, and video games. When selecting a subwoofer, consider your room size, budget, and personal audio preferences to find the best fit for your home theater system.

User questions & answers

Question: Is this a powered sub? And how many watts does it have
Answer: Hi Mike, I saw your question and wanted to give you the correct answer. The phase switch determines the way the subwoofer cone ( speaker ) reacts. When set to "0" the speaker cone will move in the outward direction at the same time ( phase ) of your main ( left & Right ) speakers. When it is set to "180" the speaker cone of the sub will move inward when your main speakers' cones are moving outward. What this does is cancel out any overlapping frequencies between your main speakers and your subwoofer. When you have overlapping frequencies between your sub and main speakers you will get too much or "bloated" mid bass. Some people prefer "180" because they feel the cancelled out frequencies produces "tighter" and more accurate bass. Other people like more mid bass, so you need to listen to it both ways to find which you prefer. The same thing will happen if you hook up speakers with the speaker wires hooked up with positive & negative swapped ( positive speaker wire in the negative speaker terminal and negative speaker wire in the positive speaker terminal ). Just as an added note, the "Low Pass" filter knob will determine what lower frequencies pass through from your receiver to your subwoofer. The higher the frequency (Hz) the more mid bass the sub outputs and the lower the frequency (Hz) the less mid bass that the subwoofer outputs. You want the subwoofer to optimally blend with your main speakers and that is what the "low pass" filter knob allows you to do. If you are using a surround sound receiver and it is set for Dolby Digital or DTS surround modes receivers will normally automatically crossover the sub output at 80 Hz, so moving the Low pass knob on the sub beyond 80 Hz will have no effect. Now, if you have a surround receiver that utilizes the Audyssey Microphone system to adjust the surround parameters you will want to set the subwoofers low pass knob all the way to the highest frequency. The Adyssey system will determine what frequency blends best with your main speakers. Hope this is helpful.
Question: What gain setting do you have your subwoofer set to? I want as much bass as possible from my audio sources (tv, games, movies, etc
Answer: Yes, there is base and treble adjustment, as well as Vizio truVolume adjustment. We have two of these, I have been impressed with the richness of the sound on this particular model.
Question: Are the surrounds foam or rubber...getting tire of foam
Answer: yes , it will right out of the box.
Question: What does the phase toggle do? I read ther manual, but it didn't explain it in a manner I could understand
Answer: This sound bar uses Bluetooth version 4.1.

Question: Will the sub work with the rockville hts56 home theater system
Answer: I purchased this clock for my Mom and it was not the best selection for her. The reception was bad and it was hard to set the time. I kept it too long otherwise, I would have sent it back.

Answer: This item (31874) is the replacement pilot bit for the Klein Carbide hole cutter.
Question: Which am/fm clock radio has the best reception
Answer: I have both sitting in front of me the klein is a hair smaller diameter than the ideal. the klein will fit the ideal but the ideal bit will not slide all the way into the klein. the idealis the better bit design and the greenlee is better still. I kept snapping the klein even trying to baby it and had to buy a Ideal to finish the job.

User questions & answers

Question: What in your opinion is the best power setting for normal use, "on" or "auto" for this unit
Answer: I would say depends if you use the item everyday/constantly as your sound for your surround. Or if you use surround/theater occasionally. If the latter I would use `on/off` , if you use it often or primarily the auto would be the way to go in my opinion. Plus is the sub easy to get to? Auto is great if its behind furniture or out of reach, etc.
Question: Does this speaker have a volume control? Thanks
Answer: Just to clarify something a previous reviewer stated: "Note: If you are using a Sub out/LFE connection from your receiver turn the Low Pass all the way up. " This does not apply to receivers with which you can specify the low-pass cutover frequency. For example, my modest Onkyo receiver has cutover settings of 80/100/120 HZ for the LFE/Sub output. If you have this option, you should consult your main speaker's manual for suggested low-pass settings or simply tune them by ear. For my setup, 120 HZ was both the recommended and best-sounding cutover frequency. 160 HZ was a little muddy :)
Question: Can this sub be added to a Vizio 2.0 sound bar, for small to medium-sized HDTV's? If not, what should I get? For TV/Games/Music
Answer: Like John, I too have a Vizio 2.0 sound bar and this pairs very well. I have a small theater room (10 x 20) and this one 10" fills the room. This sub is the best bang for the buck you can get.
Question: Do I need a Y-adpater? A sound tech told me one sub wire would do the trick and just plug it into the L and ignore the R. Is this true
Answer: Initially, used a one wire connection. Sounded OK, but .... Got a "Y" connector, attached at the rear of the amp, ran L & R wires to the PSW10: sounds amazing now and very adjustable. Need to get the PSW12 to get a one wire connection. Am very satisfied with this sub and would recommend it. Used in a 12' X 20' room, front/back/center and now the sub. Tom

User questions & answers

Question: This has Inputs for both Dolby Pro Logic and Dolby Digital/DTS. I play music/vids in both modes. How does this work, re: cable placement
Answer: Setting the switch to Dolby Pro Logic utilizes the Sub's built-in cross-over were Dolby Digital by-passes it and utilizes your receivers LFE filtering. You choose the mode, based of your receiver and the type of signal you are feeding it.
Question: Do I still need to buy an AV receiver to use this sub
Answer: The sub has a built in amp but it needs a sub signal from some source - maybe from your aluminum foil helmet
Question: How do I connect this subwoofer to my receiver if I do not have a sub output located on the back
Answer: I agree that getting a receiver with an RCA sub woofer output is best, a regular sub woofer output is second best and a regular speaker output is third. If it is a regular speaker output, see if your receiver will allow you to customize the output for that line. USE SHIELDED WIRE WHEN YOU CAN. My BIC picked up interference until I put in shielded cables. Twisted-pair may also aid in preventing extraneous noise.
Question: I'm considering purchasing the BIC America F12 Subwoofer, however, I see conflicting information in regards to the measurements. Can someone tell me the correct measurements of the speaker? Not shipping, not in the box size, just the actual size when out of the box. Thank you
Answer: One often sees two discordant product measurements on Amazon. The larger is always for the box (which no one cares about, at all). So the smaller is always the product measurement. Of course, sometimes you might only have one measurement and that could possibly be the box, which indicates sloppy imprecision from the distributor and makes you wonder what else is wrong. Others correctly answered your question so I won't (17H x 14-7/8W x 17-3/4D).

Powered Subwoofer

Excellent Bass for Movies and Music.

This subwoofer incorporates a number of Yamaha advanced, high-performance bass technologies, such as Twisted Flare Port, Advanced YST II (Yamaha Active Servo Technology II) with discrete amp circuitry and a high-quality 10" woofer unit. The resulting bass response is powerfully rich and impactful.

Clear and Tight Bass

The new Twisted Flare Port takes advantage of extensive subwoofer development experience. The gently twisting flared shape creates a smooth flow of air around the edge of the port versus the turbulent air flow around a conventional port. This reduces extraneous noise not present in the original input signal and provides clear, accurate low frequency reproduction. From special effect sounds in movies to the atmosphere of a live venue, you hear bass that is clear, tight and realistic.

Deep Lows

Developed by Yamaha, the Advanced YST II (Yamaha Active Servo Technology II) combines negative-impedance and constant-current principles to drive the speaker cone with even tighter control than the previous version. Using Advanced Negative Impedance Converter (ANIC) circuits, this system dynamically optimizes effective speaker impedance to maintain excellent linearity. This means more stable and accurate low range response, not to mention higher sound quality.

More than a Black Box

The gently rounded form with a slanted front surface is stylishly elegant. Designed to be unobtrusive, it’s sure to look beautiful in a living room or home theater room and will match a wide range of speaker systems. More than a black box, it’s the heartbeat of your home theater system.

User questions & answers

Question: Do i only need this to play music or do i have to connect some speakers or something
Answer: Absolutely yes! Subs only handle low frequencies (boom boom!). All mid, high frequencies are handled by main speakers (either 2 or 5 or more depending on what your receiver can support). And yes, you will need a receiver as well to connect subwoofer and main speakers.
Question: does this sub have an auto on/off where it shuts on and off with a signal from turning off/on your reciver
Answer: I just checked, the green power light stays on but I believe the sub shuts off automatically to standby just like the satellite speakers once the receiver is powered off.
Question: Can I connect this to a pioneer cx
Answer: From what I can see online it doesn't look like it has a powered sub woofer port on the back panel. Without that I don't believe it will work.
Question: Does this item come with a black grill cover
Answer: Yes, it came with black detachable grill cover. FYI, cover made out of fabric type material.

User questions & answers

Question: Pictures for the 15" sub doesn't look right. Does anyone know if the pictures are legit
Answer: You are correct. As of the time of this response, the picture for the 15" model is actually the picture of the 6.5" model. The correct picture can be found on Acoustic Audio's website at http://www.acousticaudio.net/psw15.html.
Question: I currently have a onkyo receiver hooked to a 5.1 surround by LG..my sub is not aux hookup only speaker cable so i must get a powered sub. Would this
Answer: Yes you can use the sub woofer with your receiver.
Question: Does it have a three prong power plug that includes a ground connection
Answer: No, it's just a duel plug, and no ground connection. Hope that helps. For such a small sub it hits pretty good. I have it set up in my bedroom 2 front speakers and it, and the quality is great.
Question: I just got this today and was hoping to hook it up to the aux output of my stereo. no sound. do i have to use speaker input instead
Answer: Make sure that your stereo is actually sending signal through your auxiliary outputs. Then make sure that your gain knob is turned up. This amplifies the incoming signal. If you still aren't getting any sound, you could try connecting a live speaker cable to the high level in. The signal will be converted to low frequency. You could use your Speaker B output on your stereo to do this. Just make sure that the B speakers are on on your stereo as well. Also make sure your subwoofer is plugged in and turned on, classic troubleshooting.

User questions & answers

Question: Dose it work at 220 volt
Answer: It will work. It’s 100-240V
Question: Is it support voltage 100~240V
Answer: Yes
Question: is this product working from 220 voltage
Answer: It will work. It’s 100-240V
Question: What kind of cable do i need to make this work with klipsch the sixes speakers
Answer: If this speaker follows the usual Klipsch subwoofer convention, you just need a single cable with RCA/phono/coaxial plugs at both ends. You have to plug it into the jack labeled "L/LFE". If you are sending separate left and right subwoofer signals, then this jack is for the left signal. If you just have one signal, then it treats it as a single LFE signal; that is, like the ".1" part of 5.1 or 7.1 audio. If the jack is simply labeled "L", then you might need an RCA jack to two RCA plugs Y adapter. For a definitive answer, look in the manual, but I suspect that it will handle a common subwoofer signal on the left jack like previous Klipsch subwoofers.

Product description

This is an 8-Inch powered subwoofer capable of producing 60 watts (RMS) output. The subwoofer has a frequency response range of 50 to 250 Hz with a lowpass crossover filter, which can be adjusted from 50 to 150 Hz. Gain and frequency knobs on the control panel allow you to adjust the crossover filter and the power output for the optimum blend and balance of bass output with your stereo or surround speakers. The subwoofer has multiple input options, which allow it to be used with any existing stereo or 5.1 (or greater) amplifier system. For each input there is a corresponding output. High-level inputs accept a full-range signal from the amplifier's stereo speaker outputs. When connecting the unit as part of a 5.1 system, these would be taken off the Front Left and Front Right outputs in parallel to the standard pair of front speakers. The subwoofer provides its own power and includes impedance matching circuitry, so this will not reduce the power output to the front speakers or affect the overall impedance load on the amplifier. Additionally, the subwoofer has a set of right/left Line Level inputs. If using a standard stereo system, without a special subwoofer output, you can connect these to the left and right line level outputs on the amp. The subwoofer will then combine the signals to process the mono bass signal it needs to drive the speaker. If you are using an amplifier with a single mono subwoofer line level output, simply use an RCA -Inch-Inch cable to split the output and send it to the two line level inputs on the subwoofer. The subwoofer is housed in an attractive black wood cabinet that measures 13.75-Inch x 11.75-Inch x 11.75-Inch (H x W x D). The driver and a 2 3/4-Inch sound port are located on the front, covered by a black cloth speaker grill. Amplifier Power Output: 60 Watts (RMS).

User questions & answers

Question: Why did the price go back up to $129. ? I was going to purchase it at $99. , I wont pay
Answer: There are fairly clear instruction included with the unit. If you have a receiver with subwoofer out, just run an RCA cable to the single input on the subwoofer. If you are using just a stereo amplifier, then you'll need to do some additional wiring. Again, the instructions should be clear enough, but basically, wire from the amp outs to the subwoofer and then from your subwoofer to your speakers, and then set the crossover frequency using the subwoofer dial.
Question: This subwoofer has hi level ins but no hi level outs in the pictures. How does that work? Run 2 sets of wire from amp? 1 set to sub 1 set to speakers
Answer: Yes it is powered. 400 watts, is plenty of power. Excellent sound. Keep it away from the wall a foot or so so it can breathe.
Question: Does unit have a lfe connection? i don’t see one from the pics
Answer: I adjust as needed, depending on the source. Normally people set it in the middle and use the source (receiver, etc) for adjustment, but my new receiver requires the TV to be on to adjust sound output
Question: Hi ,My question is how do i set up my subwoofer
Answer: Hi,I know it's been almost a year since you purchased the sub. Don't use any petroleum based product on the rubber surround. It will dry out the rubber. Btw, the rubber will hold up for many years and even longer if you keep sunlight off of it. It being a sub the grill won't harm the sound the way a grill can slightly harm on your main speakers.
