Audio Equalizer:

An audio equalizer (EQ) is a device or software application used to adjust the balance between different frequencies in an audio signal. It is an essential tool in audio systems and plays a significant role in shaping the sound to match individual preferences and room acoustics. Here are some key aspects related to audio equalizers:

  1. Frequency Bands:

    • Audio equalizers divide the audio spectrum into different frequency bands, typically ranging from low frequencies (bass) to mid-range frequencies (midrange) and high frequencies (treble).
  2. Graphic vs. Parametric EQ:

    • There are two primary types of equalizers: graphic and parametric.
    • Graphic EQ has fixed frequency bands, and you adjust the level of each band with sliders. These are common in home audio systems.
    • Parametric EQ allows you to control the center frequency, bandwidth (Q), and gain (level) of each band more precisely. They offer greater control and are often found in professional audio setups.
  3. Room Acoustics:

    • Audio equalizers are often used to compensate for room acoustics. Rooms can have acoustic anomalies that boost or attenuate certain frequencies, leading to unbalanced sound. EQ can correct these issues.
  4. Tonal Adjustments:

    • Audio enthusiasts and professionals use equalizers to fine-tune the tonal balance of audio systems. You can boost or cut specific frequency ranges to achieve the desired sound quality.
  5. Speaker Matching:

    • Equalizers can help match the sound of speakers in a multi-speaker setup. By adjusting the EQ, you can make sure all speakers contribute evenly to the audio experience.
  6. Home Theater:

    • In home theater systems, audio equalizers can optimize the sound for movies and TV shows. They enhance dialog clarity, sound effects, and the overall immersive experience.
  7. Music Playback:

    • Audiophiles and music enthusiasts use equalizers to tailor the sound to their preferences. This can involve enhancing bass for electronic music, adjusting midrange for vocals, or fine-tuning treble for classical music.
  8. Professional Audio:

    • In professional audio production, equalizers are indispensable tools for mixing and mastering music, ensuring that the final audio product sounds balanced and clear across different playback systems.
  9. Digital vs. Analog:

    • Audio equalizers come in both digital and analog formats. Digital EQs are often found in software and digital audio processors, offering precise control. Analog EQs use physical components and can impart a unique coloration to the sound.
  10. Equalizer Settings:

    • Equalizer settings can be customized based on personal preference and the type of content being played. Common adjustments include bass boost, midrange clarity, and treble adjustments.

In summary, an audio equalizer is a versatile tool used in home audio, home theater setups, and professional audio to adjust and optimize the frequency response of audio signals. It allows users to shape the sound to their liking, compensate for room acoustics, and achieve the desired audio experience.

User questions & answers

Question: How would you wire this to a head unit that has a front, rear and subwoofer channel? Would you only use the front and rear and toss the other set of r
Answer: So with only one input from the head unit does the eq convert it to front and rear sound? What I mean do you loose the rear sound or does it just double and split the front channel?
Question: Does this product light up
Answer: Yes it lights up blue cleaned up my audio very well
Question: Anyone els experiencing a popping noise when you take key out ignition if so any ideas on how i can stop it? I already tried grounding it to radio
Answer: Had the same issue with ankther brand EQ. Problem went away when I switched the positive from the EQ and attached it to the yellow cable straight to battery not the red to ignition. That should fix it.
Question: How would you do the power wire i see theres one in picture with a fuse but isint that to short
Answer: Hello, No the Red wire with fuse holder is not to short. The longer side of the Red wire goes to the Scar SKA7EQ, On Back of the SKA7EQ is the power, ground, and Remote terminal. The Red wire will be extended with a 14awg wire to your power source. Source could be the car battery, or an Accessory fuse circuit of 10 amps 12volts DC current. Extending this red wire is Normal in the audio installation world. The coupling will be needed to successfully butt the two wires together and crimp both sides, if u like install the double red wire size with Heat Shrink Tubbing, then Couple the wires with the "Butt Connector" , slide the heat shrink over it and heat the heat shrink with a Heat Gun, or powerfully hair dryer, then run the Red wire to the Accessory, or Battery positive Red Terminal. The same thing for the ground wire, black wire has no fuse in line so Run from your battery Negative Terminal Black, to the Scar SKA7EQ next to the Red wire, and Tighten it down to the SKA7EQ. The Remote wire is "In the business of Audio Installation" Traditionally Blue, Or Purple, Strip 4mm, or 3/8" and Install it into the Scar SKA7EQ at the R terminal, R stands for "Remote" or "Trigger" this Blue, Or Purple wire goes to your amplifier, and at the amplifier you will see a Positive terminal, a Negative Terminal and the R, "Remote" terminal the Blue or Purple Remote wire tightens onto the amp in the R terminal spot. The wire should be all 14 AWG for this. Wiring your amps u should at least use 4awg for both Power and Ground, Directly to the car/boat/atv Battery. Use small spools of OFC Copper, Red Positive, Black Negative, and Blue/Purple Remote from amazon, You have to have Amplifiers in your system to use the SKA7EQ. Get an Amplifier install kit, plus the three spools of 20ft of 14 AWG Red, Black, Blue from amazon....Good Luck.

Product description

Ultra-Compact 9-Band Graphic Equalizer with FBQ

If we all lived in a perfect world, there would be no need for audio equalization. Sound systems would be perfect and would reproduce perfect signals in all their glorious perfection. Also, everyone in that perfect world would like the same amount of bass, midrange and high frequency, and there would be no such thing as feedback. But the world isn't perfect, is it? Even the best sound system can benefit from the use of a good EQ--like the FBQ800.

Even the best sound system can benefit from the use of a good EQ. Click to enlarge.

1/4-inch and RCA inputs and outputs.

Nine steps of graphic EQ.

How Does it Work?

Imagine the frequency range of the sound you hear as a highway, a very wide one with nine lanes. Each of these "lanes" represents a single octave of the sonic spectrum. The first four lanes, labeled 63 - 500 (Hz) contain the really low frequency sound content, mainly bass, bass vocals, and the kick and tom drums. The three lanes labeled 1 k, 2 k and 4 k (Hz), make up the fundamental zone of most musical instruments and the male and female vocals. 8 k and 16 k cover the frequency range of cymbals, snare drums and higher pitched percussion instruments. The FBQ800 allows you to control the flow of audio traffic in each of these nine lanes. When properly applied, EQ makes it possible to hear all of these frequency ranges equally, thus the term equalization.

Feedback Elimination

When a specific frequency, or range of frequencies, reaches too high a level, feedback occurs--that all-too-familiar squeal or howl you get when the mic is too close to the speaker. Basically, feedback happens when there is so much of a particular frequency that it is picked up by the mic and run through the system again. That's why feedback typically gets louder and louder the longer it's allowed to occur. Needless to say, this kind of feedback is very undesirable.

This is where the FBQ800's Feedback Detection System really works its magic. In this ingenious circuitry, LEDs on the individual faders light up when that frequency band is approaching the danger zone. All you need do is lower the illuminated slider until the LED blinks out--voilá, feedback problem solved! What once required a highly trained ear is now an activity that even a child can master.

Sonic Toolkit

That really is the best way to describe the FBQ800. With its nine frequency bands, you easily fine-tune your sound and instantly eliminate feedback. And each fader can be used to boost or cut the frequency range it controls by as much as 12 dB (and that's a lot!).

Special attention is paid to the low frequency zone. In addition to low frequency faders, the FBQ800 features a Low Cut filter for removing unwanted low frequencies such as fl oor rumble, room resonance, electrical hum, etc. This is especially handy if your system is being used for speech rather than music.

To Boost or to Cut, That is the Question

Raising and lowering specific frequency bands can improve the frequency response of any room's acoustics. For instance, if the room you're in is "bass-heavy," lowering the 63 and 125 Hz faders can help eliminate an overall "boomy" or "muddy" sound. Likewise, gently boosting the 8 and 16 k sliders can add sparkle to a somewhat "dark" mix. Are the vocals getting lost in the mix? Raising the level of the 1 k slider can help bring them out.

It's important to note that raising a single fader level is not always the best solution; it's often better to lower the bands surrounding the frequency you want to bring out, and then boost the overall volume level to achieve better headroom.

Built for Accuracy and Reliability

Speaking of headroom, FBQ800's 6-digit LED Input/Output meters and level control are provided for precise level maintenance. Longterm reliability is ensured, thanks to high-quality illuminated faders and switches, and our ultra low-noise audio operational amplifiers provide outstanding sonic performance. In addition, all Mini Series components may be stacked to create an ultracompact signal processing solution.

User questions & answers

Question: What type of cables are required to hook this up between an amplifier and yamaha receiver? Much appreciated
Answer: Both
Question: Can you adjust each channel (left/right) separately
Answer: Nope, the only things lit are the little indicator lights for power +/- 12dbs and something else.
Question: I see many mention that they use this for helping hearing loss by using this unit with headphones. My question is how do you use this with headphones
Answer: They are very clean sounding eqs.
Question: does it connect to amplifier
Answer: First, this is not a player. This is a tone control with instead of just the normal bass, treble and high, divides it into 31 (from 20HZ to 20KHZ). Also, this model is mono (1 channel). You can get 2 of these or get the stereo model. You still need an amplifier and a player. You hook this up between a like a CD player and your amp.

User questions & answers

Question: Will this work with denon avr 2112ci receiver
Answer: Yes you can. I only use 2 channel receivers. Not into cinema and avr receivers. I use an external audio source selector. Available on Amazon. Mine handles 3 sources. But selectors with more source inputs are available. I run my sources to the inputs on the selector. Then run the single output to the auxiliary input or in the case of newer receivers, input 1,2 or 3. For my application it works very well. Technically you can connect this eq to your Denon or any other receiver without the in out loop.
Question: what would cause this to make an awfull hissing sound ? right now its useless
Answer: Trying to diagnose sound equipment is not always easy. A hum usually means a bad ground. A his could be a lose connection or a bad cable. First see if the noise is on both sides or just one. Single side noise try changing a cable from the left to the right to see if the hiss changes sides. If it does change does change out the cable. If the his stays then you have a speaker problem. If the his is on both sides check your ground. Hope this helps.
Question: Can I connect this to a yaqin mc-13s
Answer: You should beable to if u use aux cables for it
Question: Can it be connected straight to a 200 watt am/fm home reciever
Answer: Yes it will work very good with all types of recievers And 200 watts that's enuff to do alittle bit on thumppin I also have 200 watt receiver and with ROCKVILLE SOUNDS EVEN GREAT DEPENDED ON UR SPEAKER SIZE I HAVE 2 15 AND 2 SURRENDER NICE

User questions & answers

Question: Does this equalizer support stereo
Answer: Stereo just means a left and right channel as compared to "mono", which means a single channel. So, yes, this EQ does have left and right channels. No, radio or stereo that I know of today has just a single channel, unless it has one speaker.
Question: Where would i find a mounting kit to house this and a single din head unit in a double din opening
Answer: It come with a kit for mounting it to something mines is under my ash trash.
Question: will this run main and aux at the same time because i have a four channel amp and obviously front play diffrent sounds than the rear
Answer: The signal that comes out of your head unit is the same whether it is front or rear (90 percent true). That is why running the two outputs from the head unit to the EQ and then the EQ four outputs to the amp will not change anything. The only sound differential you will have is your fader, tone, treble settings which you can control and adjust with the EQ. NOW THAT BEING SAID. This true for 90 percent of the head units out there. I know my head unit has HPF and LPF filter setting and bass curves for the sub channel. You are losing all those. The only signal signal will be for the two that you hook up to the EQ.
Question: will this fit in a single din dash (2001 chevy silverado) with a deck
Answer: i realize this is an old question but for anyone with a 99-02 silverado, this is for you: you can use a single din head unit with a 1/2 din in dash eq. You simply need to get a dash kit that has single din plus eq. metra used to make one for 1999-2002 silverados but it was discontinued a while ago. the part number is Metra 99-3003. idk if scoche or AI makes or used to make one but i DO know that metra 99-3003 works. you can still find them around the internet. i just bought one for a buddies truck.

User questions & answers

Question: can I use a monoblock amp of 500 watts and one os this for the mids cus I got another mono amp for the subs
Answer: Yes I have two amps hooked to it.
Question: So the knob lights that it shows in the picture are not actually there right
Answer: All these answers are right the light aluminates from the circle around the knob not on the knob itself. but I wil say that this is a great EQ I use it instead of a head unit with my phone...
Question: What can this do for my audio quality? Can it improve bass? I'm using the Sennheiser 598's. Thanks for your time
Answer: Assuming that you are asking about the use of headphones in a car audio application, the SSL4EQ can raise the pre-amp line-out voltage from the FM/CD/HeadUnit to 7 volts. A typical head-unit alone outputs from 2 to 4 volts. The voltage rise achieved can help audio quality because a stronger signal will better reproduce weak audio frequencies and background music which may be difficult to isolate and amplify down the line.Signal voltage rise would also produce rises in volume overall, and a good clean volume rise in bass frequencies. This all depends on clean, quality audio signals from the start. Your device must also be able to handle audio line voltage rise as applied.Whether you are Aux Bluetooth or direct plugin I don't know, but if you can modify your line output using an EQ, at least you'll gain some useful rise in signal voltage until you reach distortion levels and you will have one more way to tune sound frequencies with the EQ.Hope that helps-you might also contact Sound Storm Laboratories tech, or for non-car audio (portable Windows media, USB devices and Android apps) try contacting the folks at Fiio for headphones amplification. Good luck.Pnuts.

User questions & answers

Question: How hard is it to hook up a equalizer to my Kenwood car stereo
Answer: Depends - But I'd imagine that if you are capable of installing the HU then the EQ should be just as easy. Has the 3 typical: power. ground, remote and then the input and output(s) <-- or whatever way you plan on using the EQ. All else fails, go to YouTube and watch one of the many videos. I tried "how to install a car EQ" and it came back with "about 347,000 results" I bought this EQ and am extremely pleased with what I got for the price of this thing. Buy it. figure out to install it. It is worth it
Question: Would this make a huge difference with 4 6.5 mids and 2 tweeters
Answer: It definitely would. Thats exactly what I have
Question: This can be used to take the 2 rca inputs from head unit and make them multiple rca outputs for a 5 channel amp
Answer: Yes, I have 2 AMPs connected to it. I have a 4 channel 1000 watt Rocksford Fosgate AMP pushing the highs and mids to the 6x9s and door speakers. And I have a 8000 watt Power Accoustik AMP pushing the Bass. The 1st knob is independent bass that controls my Power Accoustik AMP. The 2nd Knob is the overall volume. So the answer is Yes. It controls my 4 channel AMP and my Mono AMP at the same time.
Question: Does thing have separate inputs channels for front and rear speakers
Answer: Having trouble with my 4 channel head unit (Alpine) - I have separate front and rear L/R RCA outputs coming from the head - I plugged the front RCA outputs into the "main" which works ok, but no place to plug in the rear output RCA cables....

User questions & answers

Question: is it worth installing this equalizer although my aftermarket stereo has a built-in equalizer (will it improve soundwise
Answer: Yes and yes I Absolutely love it I'm so happy I got it it was a good deal
Question: Can this be connected to (home) stereo system
Answer: I don't think so, I use it to turn tapes in to Cd's ? I hook it up to my PC
Question: Which one of the inputs/outputs should i use to plug in for a bookshelf speaker
Answer: Any one of the input will do AUX/RADIO it make no difference and so the output just try not to used the SUB OUT
Question: can i use this as an active subwoofer crossover
Answer: IMHO, yes. You can use the sub in/out and adjust it's frequency band with the dedicated sub knob. Or, connect the sub to the main input and use the entire EQ to fine tune the bass. This is how I use it to tune to my car. I use another PEQ10 for the mid and highs. Because they are true parametrics, the range of adjustment is fantastic and I can clean up any muddiness or discoloration in the bass. Hope this helps.

Question: What size replacement fuses
Answer: 3 amp
Question: Is this able to be used for home audio
Answer: WHY IS THIS NOT FOR HOME USE? I REQUIRES A 9 VOLT POWER SYSTEM, BUT WHAT ELSE IS DIFFERENT. PLEASE ANSWER BECAUSE TO ME AUDIO COMPONANTS SUFFER EXCESSIVE VIBRATION AND JOLTS AS WELL AS MOISTURE FROM SPILLS AND HUMIDITY. PLEASE ADVISE. I'M NOT THE ONLY CURIOUS BUYER OUT HERE! RIGHT BROTHERS AND SISTERS? THANX, TOM
Question: Is it for a car or home stereo
Answer: Car
Question: can this be used as home eq between tv and soundbar
Answer: Yes, it absolutely can be used between a sound bar and a TV. You will need to purchase a 12volt power supply, that is capable of at least 20 amps. And depending on how you get your sound to your sound bar, it can be put inline if you use the headphone out jack to a RCA's. Then you can input the sound directly into the EQ, then into the sound bar, if the sound bar allows for an RCA input from a source. I have several set ups like this in my house. I should probably write a tutorial on how to set this up as it is not expensive and I'm sure a lot of dudes would like more control over their sound. If you guys ask, I will create an article on this.
