13 best open back headphones

Open-back headphones are a type of over-ear headphones that are designed with a specific ear cup construction, which allows air to flow freely through the back of the ear cups. This design choice is in contrast to closed-back headphones, where the ear cups are sealed or partially closed. Open-back headphones have several distinctive characteristics and are preferred for specific applications due to their unique design:

  1. Sound Quality: Open-back headphones are renowned for their exceptional sound quality. They provide a more natural and spacious soundstage, making them popular among audiophiles and professionals in fields like music production and mixing. The open design allows air to pass through the ear cups, preventing sound reflections and echoes inside the ear cups, resulting in a more accurate representation of audio.

  2. Soundstage: The open-back design creates a wider soundstage, which makes the audio feel more three-dimensional and natural. This can enhance the perception of instruments' placement and create an immersive listening experience, particularly for genres like classical, jazz, and orchestral music.

  3. Comfort: Open-back headphones are often more comfortable for extended listening sessions. The open design reduces heat and pressure around the ears, which can help prevent discomfort during long periods of use.

  4. Ventilation: The open-back design offers better ventilation for the ears. This can be particularly useful in warm environments, as it helps prevent excessive sweating and discomfort.

  5. Noise Leakage: One significant drawback of open-back headphones is that they leak sound. Due to the open ear cups, others in the vicinity can hear what you are listening to, and external noise can also enter the headphones. This makes open-back headphones less suitable for noisy environments and less ideal for situations where privacy is a concern.

  6. Isolation: Open-back headphones provide minimal isolation from external noise. This is because they are not designed to block out external sounds. As such, they are not ideal for use in loud or noisy environments.

  7. Use Cases: Open-back headphones are best suited for critical listening, studio monitoring, and situations where sound quality and accuracy are paramount. They are commonly used by audio engineers, musicians, and serious audiophiles. However, they are not well-suited for travel, commuting, or situations where noise isolation is essential.

In summary, open-back headphones are prized for their superior sound quality and comfort during extended listening sessions. However, their open design results in sound leakage and minimal isolation, which limits their use to specific environments where sound quality is the top priority.

Question: How do these compare to the Sennheiser HD 598 Headphones

User questions & answers

Question: what are the differences between the 500x and the 700x? And how are these with movies
Answer: They are the best headphones I've ever owned. The only difference is what drivers are actually used, I've never owned the 700x but I'm sure they would more than likely be sufitient.
Question: are they good for gaming
Answer: I added an Antlion to mine and it works great for gaming. The positional audio is solid. If you want ground-rumbling bass, well, don't use a headset. My sounds card has a good EQ and the bass and overall sound is excellent.
Question: Does the cord have the option of detaching (unplugging) from the headset
Answer: Yes, if you want to mod it
Question: How does the sound quality on these compare to the ath-m40x? If you had to choose between the two for piano practice/orchestras, which would you pick
Answer: As the m40x is closed, I would imagine your question is about recording and monitoring? A closed monitor headphone would suit that objective very well. If you meant you were planning on enjoying music in a quiet and comfort of a room somewhere the ad700x will definitely open your ears and blow your mind a bit if you've never had an experience with open headphones before. Closed for monitoring or noise area, open for quiet and most enjoyable sound. Closed may have better bass.

User questions & answers

Question: Hi, how is this in terms of bass
Answer: Don’t think so. May well not work if you do. Or result in a flash fire or worse. As in Zippos, the “cotton” serves as a sponge from which the wick draws the fuel to the flame
Question: Can anyone compare these to Grado headphones? I have a pair of sr-60's and was wondering if these are any better
Answer: It's more of an antique light brass color. And yes it's the same size as a standard zippo for the body, the top is smaller and only goes over the wick. It's a very interesting piece.
Question: are these good to block out loud conversation and music say on a school bus
Answer: It comes with one installed, but no extras.
Question: How do these compare to the Sennheiser HD
Answer: It doesn't say but I can tell ya if you intend on using it for Extracting its junk the neon has much better results and that's about as cheap as you can get so it tells ya a lot about the quality of this product!!

User questions & answers

Question: hi any recent buys here that can tell if it's still the made in Austria models
Answer: K712= made in slovakia. everything else (including K612) = made in china.
Question: hi , are they wireless
Answer: No, they are not wireless.
Question: Do these K702 have substantially more bass than the Q701 (which I found to be very light in the bass
Answer: Although I don't have a 701 the bass on the 702 is not deep but is present, if you want more bass maybe you have to look for 600/650's....
Question: Looking at the 712 and 612. I am a musician who also does production. Why would I want to spend the extra money for the 712s? Thanks
Answer: I own the 712's and 702's, but not the 612's so I can't fully comment on your question. However, I can say that the 712's are much better than the 702's. The 712's have a richer bass tone, which more than makes up for the lack of bass in the 702's. With the 702's I was producing mixes that actually had too much bass to compensate. The 712's are extremely clear, clean sounding, yet extremely flat too (except maybe a tiny boost in the bass, but it is not a boomy sound - still very clean). You can listen to them for a long time without getting fatigue. Also, they are more comfortable than the 702's. Another headphone that I really love is the Audio Technica ATH-M50's. They are definitely more fun to listen to than the 712's, and way better than Dr. Dre Pro's, but the highs and lows seem to be a bit more exaggerated (which is why they sound so good). They are closed back too, which makes them not quite as good for mixing as the 712's. But, they are in the $100-$150 price range. I hope this helps...
Question: Do I need an amplifier for this
Answer: You don’t need it, but I wonder if it would improve the sound....I first tried them on the iPhone XR using the lightning adapter. Better than what I was using before....but when I plugged them directly into my work pc...wow huge difference bass is more pronounced , overall sounded much better.
Question: I didn't find the 599se version on their official website. What is the difference between the standard version? The only difference I see is the color
Answer: the main difference is the color, because a lot of people didn't like the cream/silver design. I personally like it, however.
Question: The HD598's pads were known to flake over time. Has this been fixed in this updated 599 model
Answer: I have used this model very little (599), but I see that the pads are very well held and firm. In aliexpress.com there are many spare parts.
Question: what is the frequency response
Answer: 12- 38,500 Hz

User questions & answers

Question: Can any recommend an amp for these? i was thinking of getting the objective 2 but if anyone else has a better one please tell me. p.s. i'm on a budget
Answer: I powered the HD599s with my LG-G4 smartphone, an Acer Chromebook R-13 (excellent headphone section for a laptop), a Schiit Modi 2 Uber/ Vali 2 (Genalex Gold Lion 6922 tube) stack that I use at work (I also used a Schiit Magni 2 Uber with the Magni 2 Uber), and a Schiit Bifrost Multibit/Valhalla 2 (Genalex Gold Lion 6922 tubes)stack I have at home (I also used a Schiit Asgard 2 with the Bifrost). I did/do not apply any equalization or effects when I listen. Like all the higher end Sennheiser headphones, the HD599s improved noticeably as the driving components improved. After a lot of listening to the 598s and 599s I concluded that they both sounded best when run through my Bifrost/Asgard 2 stack (The Modi 2U/ Magni 2U pairing was also excellent), so this is how I listened when doing my analysis. Like most lower impedance headphones, they both seem to prefer solid state amps to OTL tube amps, but they did pair well with the Vali 2 (a hybrid tube amp) as well. I know the O2 is a brighter amp (and solid state) and would probably pair quite we with these.
Question: How is the bass on these headphones? Does it effect the mids/highs at all
Answer: While these aren't "bass head" headphones, they have noticeably more bass than their predecessor the HD 598s. I always found the HD 598s to be a little "bass light", where the HD 599s have a much richer sound. The HD 599's are more musical where the HD 598s are more analytical. Depending on the track and your listening level there may be some noticeable intermodulation distortion where the bass frequencies will distort the mids and highs. On Deadmau5's new track "Let Go" the effect is very noticeable when you turn them up (and not all that loud). Playing the same track on my HD 600s, HD 650s, and HD 700s does NOT result in this distortion. It isn't that the bass is distorting, it just interferes with the mids and highs. These HD 599s are my daily driver (at work) and I REALLY like them. They are a far more versatile than the HD 598s, they sound fantastic, and I don't regret the purchase at all. At work I run them on a Schiit Modi 2 Uber/Magni 2 Uber stack and the pairing with the HD 599s is excellent. The highs are also better on the HD 599s than the HD 598s (which struggled with "Sh" and "F" sounds).
Question: Can you use these on a phone
Answer: I do So everyday at work. No external DAC or Preamp, and its just an iPhone 6.
Question: How do these compare to the 598s
Answer: I think the sound is tighter, the base is slightly more pronounced, again, tighter with some snap but not boom box silliness. The sound is more focused as if you were close to the stage and not several rows back. The soundstage or separation is very close to the 98 but not that noticeable unless you're very observant. The build is better, and these phones will not have to be handled like rice paper or egg shells. Overall, just a better headphone, really. It is said, by many, the 599 shares some values present in the Senn 600 with its clinical clarity and separation of instruments present. The highs are well rounded, not sharp or shrill. The midrange presence is very solid, and not released. These are not V sounding phones like your M50 Audio Technica. To me, those phones are offensive. The V sound is pronounced base, kind of extreme, and ditto for the offensive treble while the mids are not really projected. The Senn is the opposite, a very balanced headphone in all respects, with wonderful separation, clarity, and build. It is a great all around jack of all trades headphone. That is, TV movies sound really good with these and music, well, I like them better for the focus and presence compared to the 598. Hope this helps. As far as the 598, those are cheaper if you buy the black model. And the 558 sounds a lot like them, and even cheaper if money is an issue. You may also, for a few dollars more, look into the Shure 1440 headphones. They are within affordable range, just as good as the 599 in every way, but do not have that dark and sometimes veiled sound as the Senn does.

User questions & answers

Question: how long is the cable
Answer: I've not actually done this as I have a different novation device for this, but as this device's buttons are assignable, the answer is yes. Depending on your DAW's compatibility with this device though, you might find yourself needing to do a good bit of device registration customization. For instance I use Studio One and there was not a direct device match in it's available profile. I can use the keyboard and some of the knobs as a default midi device, but have to customize the device profile to assign all of the functions. Something to be aware of.
Question: Would these pair well with the dragonfly red dac/amp
Answer: Hi Amin, It has higher quality components, as well as full RGB pads. - Pixel Pro Audio
Question: Can the balanced cable be used with an onkyo dp-x
Answer: No, it does not have speakers, and does not create sound on its own. It is a MIDI controller, not a synth. It needs to be plugged into a computer, or a tablet, running music software. I use it with Ableton Live on a Mac, and it works with Animoog on the iPad.
Question: Would the LG V30 power these well without a amp
Answer: Novation doesn't make one directly, but there are after market cases that would work.If this was helpful, please consider purchasing from us on Amazon. We can help with support after the sale as well. We have it in stock and ready to ship. - Pixel Pro Audio

Answer: Amazon seems to be cross post this on different aftershokz products. The aftershokz aeroplex definitely will not fit a large head. My head is 7 1/4 and the bone conduction part wants to rest in the ear canal where an earbud would go instead of in front of the ear on the cheekbone where its supposed to be.

Question: If I pair these with a 19.95 Sony Walkman tape player from ebay will that be ironic enough to get me in with the hipsters
Answer: There is no way for and end user to change the beep volume. Supposedly, Aftershockz is aware of this. Their "R & D department is "working on this" and a "product of lower beep sound" will be "introduced to the production line" and "the volume of the sound will drop by 3dB". (Source: A contact us / support request email exchange with Aftershockz in JAN 2021. No indication of which model or when this improvement will be introduced, but I am hoping soon and that they tell us when it happens). If I remember correctly, the beeps on my older Trekz Titanium were a lot quieter. The loudness of beeps on my recently purchased (Jan 2021) Aeropex Mini is very jarring and almost painful if I am wearing ear plugs or in a quiet environment. I find that loud beeps aren't as bad if I am not wearing ear plugs, but definitely annoying and a bit uncomfortable. In my opinion, this is a SERIOUSLY BAD DESIGN decision by Aftershockz. This has CHANGED my view of the Aeropex / Aeropex Mini from a really AMAZING, NEARLY PERFECT product, to something that I am SERIOUSLY CONSIDERING RETURNING. (Since language settings can be changed by the end user, I think Aftershockz should seriously consider a programming a setting where you can mute these beeps for those sensitive to loud or abrupt sounds.) (NOTE: I tried lowering & muting my ring tone and adjusting max volume settings on my phone per other commenter's suggestions, but this has not had any effect on the loudness of the headset button beeps. I am not using an iPhone though.)

Sennheiser HD 800 S

The audiophile headphones all others are measured against, the HD 800 S doesn’t just raise the ceiling for critical listening—it catapults right through it. The HD 800 S is assembled at Sennheiser's state-of-the-art facility in Germany so you can explore your entire music collection from the inside out.

The Exploration of Sound

The HD 800 S demonstrates over seven decades of audio expertise, redefining the critical listening experience. Sennheiser's goal was to provide acoustics so immersive that you the lines between playback and reality were erased. The signature sound of the HD 800 S is possible because of the synergy of every world-class component.

Around-the-Ear

Luxuriously soft earpads rest around the ear for long-term comfort.

Open Earcups

Experience the breathtaking sound of a vented earcup that lets soundwaves expand naturally.

Wired

Comes with cables for connecting to singled ended 1/4-inch (6.3mm) and balanced 4.4mm Pentaconn outputs such as headphone amplifiers, A/V receivers, audio interfaces and more.

It Has A Ring To It

The heart of the HD 800 S and its striking sound is the 56mm Ring Radiator transducer. It leverages the air displacement of a large speaker diaphragm without losing the rigidity of a smaller one. The result is hyper fast response for superb detail across the entire frequency range. The headphone’s vibration damping chassis and inert headband ensure that what you put into the HD 800 S is precisely what you will get out of it, too.

Each transducer is manufactured, tested, and measured to the tightest tolerance for the most dependable performance out of the box. Even the 40mm voice coil is wound in-house to ensure the shape and consistency is held to the highest standard. Each HD 800 S includes the frequency response plot unique to those perfectly matched transducers, sparing no resource to help you retrieve the most critical details from every corner of your music collection.

Behind the Mask

Achieving acoustics that are true to the source also requires management of compounding frequency clusters that produce undesirable masking effects. Sennheiser integrated a patented frequency absorber to reduce resonances that hide extraordinary musical details in plain sight. Further, the transducer system is mounted in a vibration damping chassis using aerospace-grade materials. As a result the problematic energy peaks of lower frequencies are controlled to unveil the purity your hi-fi setup is capable of.

Let’s take a look at the specifications...

  • Frequency response: 4 – 51,000 Hz
  • Impedance: 300 Ohms
  • THD: <0.02%
  • Sensitivity: 103 dB at 1 kHz, 1V

User questions & answers

Question: Hi, how is this in terms of bass
Answer: The sound quality is very good in general. If you’re looking for something real bass, highly recommend that you use a DAC with bass control. For reference I'm using Fosi Audio DAC Q4. https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07VDQQY95/ref=cm_cr_arp_d_product_top?ie=UTF8
Question: Can anyone compare these to Grado headphones? I have a pair of sr-60's and was wondering if these are any better
Answer: These Philips SHP 9500 headphones sound twice as good as the Grado SR-60's. The Philips have a unbelievably good sound stage unlike any headphones I have ever heard. Grado headphones are somewhat harsh in my opinion. You won't find a better pair of headphones under $500.00 than the Philips SHP9500's.
Question: are these good to block out loud conversation and music say on a school bus
Answer: Amp up the volume enough and you can make the music loud enough that no one can hear each other.
Question: How do these compare to the Sennheiser HD
Answer: I have both. The SHP 9500 sounds brighter and more forward for 2 reasons: the back is more open and the drivers are closer to your ears. The Sennheiser is more neutral sounding -some find it somewhat muffled unless you do the "mod" (removing a piece of tape inside) - I did. The opening on the Phillips is huge so fit maybe something to consider for one who wears a small size hat.The stock Sennheiser cable/plug size is for Home stereo. I mostly listen on an I-pod so I had to replace the stock cable - a $22 accessory. It was well worth it!!! The Phillips comes with a long but replaceable cable. As mentioned, I mostly use an ipod for portability and convenience so I replaced the cable with a much shorter 1.3 m monster cable that I picked up for $ 25. I played both headphones for 100 hours to allow them to "bloom". They have differing sound signatures and I can use them for long listening sessions. I love long solitary hikes and being "open type" they allow ambient noise to be heard - I just amp up the volume. Indoors, I can play them softly. By now, you can see that I am not a critical listener and use the headphones to enjoy music in any environment. I defer to the experts for the critical listening opinions.I use the headphones with a Fiio 7 portable amp. This is a winning combination. Both will sound good on an ipod without any boost but if you want presence, amp it up! We all have different ears...I have no qualms about using EQ either.Let me sum it up - If I catch a cold and sneezing results in some swelling if the ears, I will use the Phillips. Good Luck!!

User questions & answers

Question: how do these compare to the beyerdynamic Dt 990 pro
Answer: Both are excellent headphones. The Dt 990 pros will have more treble extension. They both have good bass. The X2's are a little smoother. The Dt pros more energetic. The X2's are very nicely built, well constructed, more aesthetic than the sturdy and quite functional Dt pros. Both have incredible ear pads. The price on the X2's make them the better relative value. They both have quality sound.
Question: What is the specification for the microphone
Answer: While it does not include a microphone it can easily be paired with something like the VMODA Boom Pro.
Question: Will these still be a worthy purchase if I'm not willing to purchase an amplifier as well
Answer: The answer is "yes". This headphone is designed to reproduce the full range of audible frequencies in a premium way. So, even if you intend to use it with a non HiFi system, the quality of the sound you will ear through this earphone will be definitely much better compared to that offered by "standard" earphones. In addition, I will add that this earphone is designed following the traditional sound composition by Philips. That is, well balanced bass, warm middles and crystal clear low frequencies, meaning that any MP3 player will benefit from it.
Question: I have heard that Phillips has been acquired by Gibson and quality control has suffered. Any truth to that
Answer: I heard the same thing so I guess it's true. One issue apparantly has to do with the ear pads being glued on. Some pairs have glue while others do not. The pair I received had no defects at all and the pads were not glued on. They have a tight fit but they are removable.

Created for excellence

With over 50 years of heritage in headphone acoustics, we remain dedicated to ensuring exacting standards in both sound and ergonomic performance. That's why we continually work to refine and innovate our products, integrating your preferences and experiences into our signature designs.

Fidelio X2HR integrates iconic design matched with an impeccably clear and detailed sound range. With the Philips Fidelio X2HR, immerse yourself in the experience of your own personal concert right at home.

50mm high power drivers

Each speaker is carefully handpicked, tuned and tested, and is paired for the most detailed natural sound. The 50mm drivers utilize high power neodymium magnets to reproduce all your music’s dynamics and deliver well balanced crisp bass, transparent mid-range and pristine high frequencies.

Acoustic open back design

An acoustic open-back architecture eliminates air pressure build-up behind the driver, allowing the diaphragm ample free movement, greatly enhancing sound transparency and smoothening extended high frequencies.

Layered motion control

Layered Motion Control (LMC) drivers feature a multi-layered polymer diaphragm that encases a layer of damping gel. These layers form a flexible boundary and – together with the gel – absorb and dampen any exaggerated frequencies, resulting in a smooth and flatter frequency response. The result is a more balanced, natural and refined range of high frequency sounds.

Pre-tilted drivers fit the ears for minimal sound reflection

The earshells are engineered to tilt at 15 degrees, fitting your ear’s natural geometry and immersing you in a truly precise and unadulterated sound performance. Audio signals are directly channeled into your ears, creating a dynamic and authentic listening experience.

Self-adjustable hammock

The self-adjustable lightweight hammock features an airy 3D mesh, which is not only breathable, but is flexible enough to ensure a perfect fit – always.

Breathable velour & memory foam cushions

Crafting the Philips Fidelio X2HR starts with meticulously choosing each material for its functionality and ergonomic comfort. Deluxe memory foam ear-pads are matched with a velour material of optimized density with high breathability, to dissipate pressure and heat for longer-wearing comfort.

Built for quality

Obsession has its advantages, especially if it fuels our passion in bringing you exceptional acoustic performance and best-in-class detailing. For the ultimate ergonomic fit, our newly enlarged headband features a precisely machined external hinge system coupled with metal tubes wrapped in genuine calf leather.

Double layered earshells

The Philips Fidelio X2HR's double layered earshells are engineered to reduce resonance and vibration, bringing you flawless sound with genuine precision and uncompromised detail. The solid, layered construction ensures durability, making X2HR the ideal music companion at home.

User questions & answers

Question: What size are the drivers
Answer: I'd say about 50 to 55 millimeters
Question: What are the plugs that go into the headphone, 2.5 mm or 3.5 mm
Answer: 2.5 mm
Question: What if I don’t like the sound quality
Answer: If you don't like the sound quality follow the return guidelines set by Amazon. But, these headphones have very good sound quality. Highs are exceptional so are the mids. Bass is tight and accurate. Unless your a bass head these are worth it. If you need more bass then give up any semblance musical taste and get some beats. Now sometimes it could be the fit or comfort then except my apology about the beats comment. The point is you can't do much better than these for the price.
Question: Which amp\s have you tried with this headphone and which amp do you think suits best for the he4xx
Answer: I use a nobsound ns 08e and it works excellent. The only thing I did was swap out the pre amp tubes for some nos Russian stock tubes (new old stock). Russian tubes are sturdy and accurate. The sound is excellent. Now, that is only if I use my phone or other device. Thur my home sound system I don't need any extra amp help.
