There were never more than 5 boxes (cleaned daily) available for them. In order to see if more were needed, I'd use a UV (black light) flashlight to look for spray spots. Oddly enough, after almost 20 years, I found that none of the kids went around spraying! To sum it up, in my experience, have two boxes for two cats. If you begin to have more than that I would suggest no more than 50% box to cat ratio, with the emphasis on keeping the boxes policed.
