User questions & answers

Question: Does this come with a Garmin warranty
Answer: From time telling mode press lower left button 3 times. Press lower right twice, hours flash. Press upper right repeatedly until an "H" appears to the right of the minutes. Press lower left once to return to time telling mode.
Question: Has anyone used this for diving and skiing? need a dive computer, but want to track my runs/top speed when i ski as well
Answer: The watch is an inch and a quarter in diameter. The band is up to 8 inches long. As an adult woman, the watch is a bit big for me but I love the clear numbers and the light weight.
Question: Is it compatible with tank pressure transmitter
Answer: No, you're right. Whenever you take off your watch, you should open the back and remove the battery. Leave the back off to facilitate reinserting the battery next time you need to tell the time. Doing that will extend the battery's life probably beyond the watch's.Seriously—I've 2 Casios, each on their 2nd battery, but the 1sts lasted >10years. 99.999% of that lifespan was "wasted". Casio has to insert a battery to QC the watch. Leaving it running adds an insignificant incremental extra to that 99.999%.
Question: Can I download music on the decent like my fenix 5 and use it for running as well
Answer: no there is no back lighting or glow in the dark for the watch

Versatile GPS Dive Computer for Your Diving Adventures

Whether you dive with or without tanks, in saltwater or fresh water, breathing nitrox, trimix or holding your breath — Descent Mk1 is the intuitive, do-it-all dive computer you’ve been waiting for. It’s the first watch-sized dive computer to offer surface GPS navigation with full-color onscreen mapping and location reference — so you can easily mark your dive entry and exit points.

Once underwater, the proven Bühlmann ZHL-16c algorithm makes sure you’re staying within your dive limits. Selectable tone and vibration alerts help keep you informed while you’re submerged. Returning topside, Descent Mk1 also functions as a robust training companion, offering the best features of our fēnix 5X ultimate multisport GPS watch, including smart notifications³ to help you stay in touch on the go. What’s more, the Descent Mk1 design is so sleek, comfortable and elegantly crafted, you’ll want to wear it as your everyday timepiece.

Charge It Up, Change It Up

Between charges, you can count on up to 40 hours of battery life in dive mode, up to 19 days in watch mode, up to 10 days in smartwatch mode and up to 20 hours in GPS mode (all depending on settings). QuickFit bands let you tailor your wrist-worn style for any daily activity or special occasion — no tools required. And for diving, longer QuickFit straps are included for use over thick wetsuits or dry suits.

Breathe Easier, Dive Better

Providing easy-to-access features for a range of diving activities — including the ability to plan dives on the device for recreational, technical and free diving — Descent Mk1 provides all the key, real-time data you need for a confident dive. The computer is automatically activated when you hit the water, showing your current depth, dive time, water temperature, ascent/descent rate, no-deco time, decompression stop information, battery life and more on the unit’s crisp 1.2” color display.

You can set the audible tone and vibration alarms to provide reminders at critical points in your dive. And up to 6 different gas mixes are supported, including nitrox and trimix (up to 100% oxygen). Configurable conservatism settings let you adjust your personal safety limits.

Multiple Navigation Sensors

In addition to its high-sensitivity GPS and GLONASS satellite tracking for map-based surface navigation, Descent Mk1 also provides a full array of ABC (altimeter, barometer and compass) sensor capabilities for topside navigation. And the easy-to-read compass display is available for underwater use as well. The built-in altimeter provides elevation data, while the tilt-compensated 3-axis electronic compass keeps your bearing — whether you’re moving or not. For quick access to the compass display, a handy “tap to compass” feature lets you simply double-tap the screen instead of pushing the function buttons.

Wrist-based Heart Rate

The Descent Mk1 dive computer uses Garmin Elevate wrist-based heart rate technology to optically scan your pulse (when worn in contact with your skin, not over a wetsuit or dry suit). The dive computer tracks your exertion levels and uploads your heart rate data automatically to your Garmin Connect online account for post-dive review and analysis.

Advanced Multisport Watch Features

Beyond its full range of dive computer functions, Descent Mk1 also offers a complete feature set of sports/training, fitness and outdoor navigation tools, leveraged from our popular fēnix line of high-end multisport watches. You can tap into an array of physiological metrics, running dynamics, fitness tracking features and more — to monitor your workout stats, measure your progress and help avoid injury. Special preloaded activity profiles are provided for swimming, running, biking, hiking, skiing, rowing, paddle boarding and more. Various timekeeping, lap counts and map tracking functions are easily accessible. Plus, for added motivation, you can even download advanced workouts and training plans to your device from Garmin Connect.

Smart Connectivity

When paired with your compatible smartphone, Descent Mk1 makes it easy to receive text messages, emails and smart notifications right on your watch face. It also gives you access to automatic uploads with Garmin Connect, audio prompts, music controls and more. While you’re topside, friends and family members can follow your location and adventures online, in real time, using the LiveTrack feature. Or you can use GroupTrack and your map display to keep tabs on your activity-sharing buddies as you go.

Premium Materials, Elegant Style

Crafted of premium grade materials, the Descent Mk1 dive computer is available in 2 distinctive styles: a stainless steel bezel with treated silicone watch band or a deluxe titanium bezel version with brushed DLC titanium bracelet. Both models offer advanced GPS and GLONASS satellite reception, via an EXO omnidirectional antenna in the bezel, for better reception in challenging environments (versus GPS alone). A bright, high-resolution, full-color Garmin Chroma Display with LED backlighting assures great readability in all lighting conditions, above or below the water. And for added scratch resistance, both models incorporate a high-strength domed sapphire lens.

User questions & answers

Question: When in "normal" non-exercise mode, can i set the watch face just to display time, day & date
Answer: Yes, I wear it as a watch that normally displays time, date and battery life. Then I can toggle thru other displays when I want to see heart rate, steps, weather, calendar, workout, or any of the other features.
Question: Does the GPS work if it's covered by a jacket or long sleeved shirt
Answer: I purchased this for my wife so I do not use it however I am a surveyor so I do have vast experience with GPS. GPS signals will not be hindered by thin materials such as cloth. Inside buildings with wood and shingle roofs will throw the location of a bit reducing the accuracy. GPS signals simply do not penetrate metal objects. That being said you should not experience any loss of signal or accuracy using typical clothing items. You may experience some issues if the device was covered with something metallic such as those solar blankets. Perhaps a good experiment to ease your mind is use your cell phone's GPS tucked into your sleeve as the technology is nearly identical in all small consumer products.
Question: Is it water resistant
Answer: Yes, it is...I looked at the manual and the water rating is actually 5 ATM (atmospheres), not 5 meters. 5 ATM actually equates to about 50 meters deep, so technically you could swim or shower with this watch just fine. Just be aware that this model doesn't currently have any swim tracking features built in so there's not much of a point to swimming with it anyway (although you can install apps from Garmin Connect IQ, so perhaps there is a swim tracking app on there).Source: http://www.garmin.com/en-US/legal/waterrating(the "Swim" section of the table on that page has a footnote which references devices rated at 5ATM)
Question: Does this watch have continuous heart rate monitoring like the fitbit surge
Answer: I am not familiar with the fitbit however this garmin 235 monitors your heart rate constantly as long as you are wearing it. I wear mine even while I am sleeping. It is neat to see my resting heartbeat. Love it!

Custom Apps, Watch Faces and More

You can customize your tactix Charlie with free downloads from our Connect IQ store. Change your watch face, add data fields, or get apps and widgets for information at a glance.

Garmin is continually working with top companies and developers to build strategic relationships that add even more value to your tactix Charlie multisport watch. Names such as Uber, Strava, AccuWeather and many others offer apps and enhancements that let you tailor your watch to fit your lifestyle in more ways than ever.

Map Your Route to Success

Whether you’re on training maneuvers or just out for a jog, the tactix Charlie watch’s built-in mapping and navigation features help keep you oriented and on course. Full-color TOPO mapping comes preloaded, with map data optimized for at-a-glance navigation and location tracking. GPS and GLONASS satellite network reception allows you to track in more challenging environments than GPS alone. Plus, you can use your watch to create and follow courses as well as mark locations for such things as your campsite, vehicle, course checkpoints or other points of interest.

Navigate the Outdoors Your Way

In addition to map-based guidance, your tactix watch also provides a set of ABC (altimeter, barometer and compass) sensors to guide you on or off the beaten path. The built-in altimeter provides elevation data to accurately monitor ascent and descent for activities such as hiking, while the tilt-compensated three-axis electronic compass keeps your bearing — whether you’re moving or not.

Premium Materials, Robust Performance

Built for rugged go-anywhere use, the all-black, antireflective tactix Charlie watch is crafted of the finest premium-grade materials. Its lightweight titanium bezel features a DLC coated surface and stainless steel buttons, offering maximum resistance to abrasion and corrosion. There’s a scratch-resistant domed sapphire lens plus an always-on, high-resolution, full-color Garmin Chroma Display with user-activated “night vision mode,” which reduces backlight settings to a level that doesn't interfere with the operation of night vision goggles. The watch is water-rated to 10 ATM (100 meters), and it comes with an all-weather black silicone band. For added variety, there’s also a wide selection of QuickFit bands in your choice of premium leather, metal or silicone — so it’s easy to mix and match styles to go with any sport or activity.

Monitor Your Performance, Training and Recovery

For serious physical training and fitness activities, tactix Charlie offers advanced performance monitoring capabilities. Training status is a new tool that automatically evaluates your recent exercise history and performance indicators to let you know if you’re training productively, peaking or overreaching. The new anaerobic training effect metric opens a window of insight to a critical dimension of training, telling you how your training is improving your ability to push the limits. You can even view your overall training load, which measures your exercise volume from the last 7 days and compares it to the optimal range for your fitness and recent training history. For added motivation, you can download advanced workouts and training plans from Garmin Connect.

Wrist-based Heart Rate

On your wrist, Elevate wrist heart rate technology¹ lets you monitor your heart rate without wearing a chest strap. In addition to counting steps and monitoring sleep, the watch uses heart rate to provide calories burned information and quantify the intensity of your fitness activities. It also measures your heart rate variability to calculate a stress score that helps you assess what level of activity your body is ready for.

Stay Smartly Connected

tactix Charlie supports smart notifications when paired with a compatible device. Receive emails, texts and alerts right on your watch — whether you’re on the trail, in the field or simply away from your desk. Other connected features include automatic uploads to our Garmin Connect online fitness community, live tracking and social media sharing through our free Garmin Connect and Garmin Connect Mobile applications.

Built-in Tactical Features

The watch’s tactical features include Jumpmaster activity, projected waypoints and a dual-format GPS Coordinate Data Page that supports display of MGRS, degrees/minutes/seconds and more.

Running Power

Add power data to your training by downloading our Running Power app from the Connect IQ store onto your compatible watch. Developed by Garmin Labs, the Running Power app taps into metrics — such as pace, vertical oscillation, grade and even local wind conditions — to determine the amount of power you’re applying at the ground as you run. When you know how much power you’re expending from minute to minute and mile to mile, you’re better able to pace yourself, which can help keep you from tiring out too quickly. The best news? If you already own the right Garmin devices, adding power to your run is free. All you need is a tactix Charlie watch and one of these accessories: HRM-Run, HRM-Tri or the Running Dynamics Pod.
