User questions & answers
Question: | Will this navigator allow me to choose my own route prior to leaving or does it only provide the "fastest" route |
Answer: | When you enter in a destination you will have an option to choose from 3 different calculated routes. If you are wanting to create a custom route to go down specific roads, there is a Trip Planner feature built into the device which will allow you to insert shaping points along a road to take a specific route. |
Question: | is there a 110v cord available for this unit |
Answer: | All of these units have battery back up so you can never directly plug these into 110v. Any 2 amp cell phone/laptop chargers work or the provided 12v car adapter/charger. It also comes with a USB cord. |
Question: | What is the expected battery life with a full charge? My neighbor says his lasts only about 35 minutes? Is this typical |
Answer: | My new phone 51 has a battery life of about 5 minutes! No longer even if plugged in overnight. It sucks for anything other than using it in the car. I do have a large auxiliary battery I use with my cell, and I can plug the 51 into that for a longer live. They sell another unit with a 2 hour life but I would not trust the data they at GARMIN have. I was very disappointed at the short battery life. I intended to use it in the city when I had to walk and not burn up cell minutes. |

Answer: | Garmin Drive 61 LMT-S can use the GPS without a smartphone. You have purchase a Garmin Traffic Receivers: 1. Garmin GTM 60™ HD Digital Traffic Receiver 2. User questions & answers
Question: | I just purchased a smartdrive 65. i already have a gtm 60 hd digital traffic receiver. is there an advantage to use it with my new |
Answer: | I asked Garmin support this exact question since I have a GTM 60 and a Drivesmart 65/traffic also. The answer I got was that the built-In traffic receiver in the GPS works in more locations (some smaller cities) but that the GTM 60 will update more frequently and give a bit more detail when you are in large metropolitan areas. I am using mine with the GTM 60 and it seems to work well with the GTM 60. |
Question: | For the DriveSmart 55 and 65 models, do they come with free Lifetime map updates |
Answer: | The DriveSmart 55 & Traffic and the DriveSmart 65 & Traffic devices receive map updates and traffic without being charged. |
Question: | Is there a monthly or yearly pay ? Like subscribtion , data or anything? Thanks |
Answer: | Garmin appears to have become sneaky on this front. Their own site offers no LMT version for the DriveSmart 55. Neither do they directly mention updates for it. Elsewhere on the site, there is verbiage about PAYING for updates. No dollar amount cited. Only that one must download an app to obtain further info. |
Question: | For garmindrive 55, does it have us&canda map? does it have speed camera & red light warning |
Answer: | Yes, the Garmin Drive 55 includes mapping of the United States and Canada and has Red Light and Speed Camera warnings. |

User questions & answers
Question: | What will the bluetooth on the Nuvi 2689 model do for me? My phone has it |
Answer: | Your Nuvi will marry your cell phone. Calls that come in to the cell will be picked up by Nuvi (which has a decent mic and speaker) so you can answer and talk "hands-free." You can give the Nuvi voice commands, and since it is married to your cell, you can tell it to call someone, while keeping both hands on the wheel and your eyes on the road. Activating the voice commands is very helpful and safer than using your phone in speaker mode or with your ear plugged up by wearing a bluetooth-to-cell receiver. You never have to look at or touch your phone to make or answer calls. |
Question: | Can you plan a route starting from a location other than your current location |
Answer: | Base Camp is awesome but you can do what you are asking without it. You do so by creating a "trip". In specific, there is an "App" included which is loaded onto the phone called something like "Trip". You specify the starting and ending points of your trip. They don't have to include your current location. I created a trip with 10 cities, and it created 10 "legs" of the trip, you might say, from City A to City B and then City B to City C, etc. |
Question: | Does this unit come with a windshield mount and power cord |
Answer: | It comes with a suction windscreen mount. It also has a power cord designed for 12v vehicle utility socket (cigar lighter socket). The provided power cord actually contains the traffic receiver. While the unit can be powered via other USB-connector sources, you will not be able to take advantage of traffic updates without use of the supplied power cord. |
Question: | does the power cable to the car have the outlet for the traffic antenna |
Answer: | According to a comment left by the manufacturer, "the 2599LMTHD (and any other Garmin automotive device with a T or THD in the model name) does not require any additional purchase to receive traffic. The traffic receiver for this model is embedded in the device itself. The vehicle power cable included in the packaging is required for traffic as it doubles as the device's traffic antenna." This comment from the manufacturer can be found in the Amazon review "Great Voice Command GPS" October 10, 2014 By L Vrieze. http://www.amazon.com/gp/customer-reviews/R3FZUBUZEQS9GE/ref=cm_cr_pr_rvw_ttl?ie=UTF8&ASIN=B00N41US72 |

User questions & answers
Question: | How large is the display |
Answer: | This model has a 6.95" display. |
Question: | Is the smart phone traffic updates more reliable than the HD Traffic cable |
Answer: | I also find it very much more reliable. I have a Garmin with standard LMT and it often reports "no traffic" (problems) while I'm sitting in an 8-mile backup. This DriveSmart 61 is fast and accurate at least in the Seattle Metro area zones (as in from Olympia to Everett, WA. Because of this I'm replacing that one ( an 2699 LMT HD) with another DriveSmart 61. |
Question: | what is the release date |
Answer: | Shows all model's release dates: http://www.poi-factory.com/node/42240 |
Question: | Does this unit come with the traffic cable in the box or does it need to be purchased separately |
Answer: | Old question I know but felt it might be needed to clarify, this GPS can work with the app or the GPS cable. The difference in the two is accuracy and range, the app will get a larger more accurate view of traffic by looking at vehicles with a Garmin GPS inside than comparing these vehicles speed to the speed limit of the road. The cable works by radio a special band that is used to inform others of heavy traffic it can work pretty well but is reliant on the radio stations it can pick up (about 20-30 miles) and how accurate these reporting are (some rarely use this while others will but never remove the notice after it's been cleared). The app offers for features and gives you a larger look of traffic around you even hours away and in some chases re-route you early on so you can avoid heavy traffic if possible but this requires mobile data to use. The cable is less reliable and it's usefulness depends heavily on how well the town you are in/near reports this information and also poor range (a reported delay of 30 mins is no good (re-routing) if it takes you 10 mins of being in bumper to bumper traffic to come close enough in range to see the alert, this isn't frequent but can happen when going thru large cities (Kansas City, Saint Louis, Memphis, Atlanta) etc you get the point. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Will this gps provide hands free calling with a windows phone? my phone has bluetooth, but no app in the windows store |
Answer: | I think so but I'm not sure. The manual does not state any limit on a "smartphone" operating system for the speakerphone feature to work. I doubt that a special app is needed in the phone for it to link via Bluetooth. I know when I link my Android phone to various Bluetooth devices (I do not link it to my Garmin DriveSmart 61), no app is needed. Best regards, Doug |
Question: | Will this work without a smart phone |
Answer: | Yes. You just won't have all the advertised features but the basic navigation/maps will work perfectly fine. |
Question: | Does this gps give voice turn by turn direction and continuous reroute |
Answer: | Yes, Just like every other Garmin. |
Question: | What is the internal storage capacity, and what is the size of the average update? I don't want to keep buying SD cards |
Answer: | The internal memory on this device is 16 GB. An SD card would not be needed at this time due to the space on the device. If you choose to install a card, this device can use a maximum card size of 64 GB. Thanks, James |

User questions & answers
Question: | my car does not have a cigarette lighter conection but does have 12 voly and usb connectors. Does this device connect with 12 volt and usb to chargej |
Answer: | I have the Garmin Nuvi 50, and the cable that comes with it - and this one - is absurdly short. It doesn't reach from the cigarette lighter/12 volt plug and the windshield. My brother-in-law had a generic usb-to-usb mini, and it worked just fine. I have also used the cable from my old BlackBerry phone (which is also USB mini), and it worked fine too. It is NOT unique, and you should not have to rig anything up. A nice length USB to USB mini should work just fine. You can also connect/charge this at home, with any plug that has a USB mini end. |
Question: | will this work on the Nuvi |
Answer: | I can't answer this for sure. I would assume that all garmin power cords are universal but do some more research. |
Question: | Will this work on Garmin Nuvi 255 GPS |
Answer: | We purchased 2 of these as replacement chargers on our 4 different Nuvi 225W and they work just fine. |
Question: | Will this work with a Garmin Nuvi 200w |
Answer: | I do not know specifically, but read a comment from someone else that said it did work well with his old Garmin Nuvi 200 |

nüvi 2597LMT features Garmin Traffic to help you spend more time on the move. With Garmin Traffic, your driving map remains onscreen at all times. Traffic alerts appear to the side of your map and messages are spoken, too. Garmin Traffic can give details about the situation, such as how many minutes of delay to expect and if there are any possible detours. It can even confirm whether or not you are on the fastest route. Garmin Traffic is voice activated, so it responds to spoken requests. Lifetime traffic² entitles your nüvi 2597LMT to receive free traffic information for its entire useful life.
The Power of Your Voice
nüvi 2597LMT has the luxury of voice-activated navigation. Speak, and your device intelligently responds; your hands can remain safely on the wheel. Of course, you can also navigate using the touchscreen interface.
Garmin Real Directions™ with Garmin Real Voice™
nüvi 2597LMT redefines “spoken turn-by-turn directions” with Garmin Real Directions, easy-to-understand driving directions that guide like a friend, using recognizable landmarks, buildings and traffic lights. No more stress from trying to read street names. Garmin Real Voice is refined speech technology that sounds more like a natural, friendly voice. Garmin Real Directions and Garmin Real Voice are features that are only available in our line of GPS navigators.
Bluetooth® Compatible
Sync a Bluetooth-enabled device, such as your smartphone, to nüvi 2597LMT for hands-free calling through its integrated microphone and speaker. Safely stow your phone in a glove compartment, pocket or purse and still make and take calls without moving your hands from the steering wheel or your eyes from the road.
Smartphone Link Compatible
Smartphone Link is a free mobile app that connects your nüvi 2597LMT with your Android™ smartphone. When paired, your nüvi 2597LMT can use your phone’s existing data plan³ to share information — such as where you parked, POIs and your destination.
Smartphone Link also gives you access to Garmin Live Services⁴, useful real-time information such as weather and traffic conditions. Garmin Live Services are available free and by subscription.
Comprehensive Driving Guidance You See and Hear
Active Lane Guidance with voice prompts prepares you to drive through an exit or interchange with confidence. As you approach, an animated model uses brightly colored arrows to indicate the proper lane needed for your route; a friendly voice offers additional help. Bird’s Eye junction view offers a detailed view of interchanges, looking down as if from overhead. photoReal junction view realistically displays junctions and interchanges along your route, including the surrounding landscape. Brightly colored arrows indicate the proper lane to drive. nüvi 2597LMT also depicts real road signs as they appear along your route.
More Information at a Glance
nüvi 2597LMT keeps your driving map onscreen at all times and additional information appears alongside. For details, simply ask or touch the screen. As you drive your route, Up Ahead constantly informs you of nearby services, including restaurants, fuel stations, hospitals and stores.
nüvi 2597LMT displays speed limit, current speed and accurate time of arrival. With a quick glance, you can read the name of your current street. nüvi 2597LMT also shows school zone warnings.

¹If you purchase a nüMaps Lifetime subscription (sold separately or bundled together with certain GPS models), you will receive up to 4 map data updates per year, when and as such updates are made available on Garmin’s website, for 1 compatible Garmin product until your product’s useful life expires or Garmin no longer receives map data from its third party supplier, whichever is shorter. A product’s “useful life” means the period during which the product (a) has sufficient memory capacity and other required technical capabilities to utilize current map data and (b) is capable of operating as intended without major repairs. A product will be deemed to be out of service and its useful life to be ended if no updates have been downloaded for such product for a period of 24 months or more. Unless otherwise stated, the updates you receive under the subscription will be updates to the same geographic map data originally included with your Garmin product when originally purchased. In some instances, your Garmin product might not have sufficient memory remaining for you to load an update to the map data, in which case you will need to either (a) select reduced map data coverage for your updates, or (b) purchase separately a microSD™/SD™ card (if and as applicable to your Garmin product) and load all or a portion of the map data coverage for your updates to the card and insert the card into the microSD/SD card slot contained in your Garmin product. If neither of the measures in (a) or (b) can be used to address your product’s lack of sufficient remaining memory, then Garmin may conclude that the “useful life” of your product has expired. Garmin may terminate your nüMaps Lifetime subscription at any time if you violate any of the terms of this agreement or your subscription. Your nüMaps Lifetime subscription may not be transferred to another Garmin product.
²FREE lifetime traffic updates may not be transferred to another person or another Garmin product. Lifetime traffic extends for the useful life of your Garmin traffic receiver (as long as you own a compatible Garmin GPS) or as long as Garmin receives traffic data from its traffic supplier, whichever is shorter. A traffic receiver’s “useful life” means the period during which the receiver (a) has the required technical capabilities to utilize current traffic data service and (b) is capable of operating as intended without major repairs. User questions & answers
Question: | How long does the Garmin 2557 stay charged if it isn't hooked up to "power |
Answer: | It stays powered for abuot a week in a half once you have fully charged it. The 2597 is the best buy for the money. It also lets you talk threw it once your phone is on it's bluetooth connection |
Question: | does the unit come with preloaded maps of Europe |
Answer: | There are lots of contradicting answers on the multiple threads. I spoke with Garmin Support and he recommended the 2577 SPECIFICALLY for this reason. The online description ( https://buy.garmin.com/en-US/US/on-the-road/automotive/2013-line/nuvi-2577lt/prod122520.html ) also lists both maps.William - If yours did not, it seems you overpaid because the 2597 is the same device at less money PLUS it has Lifetime Maps. Chas / Mark / D. - Do all of you have the device and physically confirmed it doe not have Europe? Again, this is counter what Garmin said to me about 1hr ago. |
Question: | Can you choose a route to avoid an area (such as New York CIty) you know you do not want to travel through |
Answer: | In my experience you have to set a via point so the GPS will route in the direction you want. For example. I travel from central KY to northern WI. The GPS will route me through Chicago and all the toll roads and traffic. So I set a via point at Normal, IL after I have entered my WI destination. The GPS will ask you if it's a new destination or if you want to add it to the active route. You choose "active route" and you get the opportunity to pick where in the line-up it goes. So you can set multiple via points if you wish. |
Question: | Is it easy to operate |
Answer: | The Garmin 2557 is very easy to operate. Much easier than my old 740. You just turn it on and say "voice command" and it will then ask you what you want to do, with several items on the screen to choose from, such as "find city" you then say "find city" and it will then ask you what city and you tell it and it will find it and ask if you want to start navigation, you say yes and away you go. To find an address, you say "find address" and it will say "speak an address" you tell it the address, the city and the state, all right at that time, and most of the time it will ask "do you want to begin navigation?" you say yes and again, away you go. Sometimes, if you don't speak plain or in a steady fashion, it may ask "did you say" and if you didn't you just say no, and you begin again. Also it lists several places on the screen and if you see what you said, just tap it with your finger and that will be entered. I havent had to type anything into it since I have had it and I did take two out of state trips with it. So far it has all been voice activated, and it doesn't have to learn your voice, it will work with other people just as good. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Does this have a rubber bottom or smooth cloth like one? The one I have now falls off every sharp turn. Not enough friction |
Answer: | Mine does not move or slip off dash during sudden turns. Not sure what's inside the material to keep it weighted down; material is a sturdy nylon (smooth bottom). I would purchase this item again...very pleased with it. |
Question: | Can I use with Garmin drive |
Answer: | Yes, this is compatible with a Garmin Drive 61. |
Question: | can i use this with a garmin dash cam |
Answer: | I don't have a dash cam so I'm not sure, sorry. I use it with the Garmin GPS and it's great for that. |
Question: | Mine worked great for a while, but now it lost its friction and slides everywhere. Is there any way to make it sticky again |
Answer: | Use a sticky cell phone gel pad. They cost about $5 and will keep your mount from sliding even in quick turns and hard braking. I bought one years ago and it is still working well. I always put my Garmin on the floor out of sight when parking it gets dirty but the gel pad on the dash works well anyway. |

Question: | Any owners experience inaccuracy of traffic congestion? My phone will show red, with accurate ETA but Garmin reports ETA w/o congestion. Worthless for finding best route due to this |
Answer: | Mine will not provide/update any traffic reports (Cleveland Ohio) Guess it's not a big enough metro area... although it is listed. |
