User questions & answers

Question: Will this gps provide hands free calling with a windows phone? my phone has bluetooth, but no app in the windows store
Answer: I think so but I'm not sure. The manual does not state any limit on a "smartphone" operating system for the speakerphone feature to work. I doubt that a special app is needed in the phone for it to link via Bluetooth. I know when I link my Android phone to various Bluetooth devices (I do not link it to my Garmin DriveSmart 61), no app is needed. Best regards, Doug
Question: Will this work without a smart phone
Answer: Yes. You just won't have all the advertised features but the basic navigation/maps will work perfectly fine.
Question: Does this gps give voice turn by turn direction and continuous reroute
Answer: Yes, Just like every other Garmin.
Question: What is the internal storage capacity, and what is the size of the average update? I don't want to keep buying SD cards
Answer: The internal memory on this device is 16 GB. An SD card would not be needed at this time due to the space on the device. If you choose to install a card, this device can use a maximum card size of 64 GB. Thanks, James

User questions & answers

Question: For the DriveSmart 55 and 65 models, do they come with free Lifetime map updates
Answer: The DriveSmart 55 & Traffic and the DriveSmart 65 & Traffic devices receive map updates and traffic without being charged.
Question: I just purchased a smartdrive 65. i already have a gtm 60 hd digital traffic receiver. is there an advantage to use it with my new
Answer: I use the GTM 60 with my DriveSmart 55 and it works wonders. nearly as good (and in some regards better...) than WAZE. Now, even though the DS 55/65 comes with built in traffic, thats only the standard traffic, for the HD traffic you need the GTM 60. And yes, the HD is much much more up to date and detailed. Safe Travel everyone!
Question: Is there a monthly or yearly pay ? Like subscribtion , data or anything? Thanks
Answer: Garmin appears to have become sneaky on this front. Their own site offers no LMT version for the DriveSmart 55. Neither do they directly mention updates for it. Elsewhere on the site, there is verbiage about PAYING for updates. No dollar amount cited. Only that one must download an app to obtain further info.
Question: For garmindrive 55, does it have us&canda map? does it have speed camera & red light warning
Answer: Yes, the Garmin Drive 55 includes mapping of the United States and Canada and has Red Light and Speed Camera warnings.

User questions & answers

Question: What will the bluetooth on the Nuvi 2689 model do for me? My phone has it
Answer: Your Nuvi will marry your cell phone. Calls that come in to the cell will be picked up by Nuvi (which has a decent mic and speaker) so you can answer and talk "hands-free." You can give the Nuvi voice commands, and since it is married to your cell, you can tell it to call someone, while keeping both hands on the wheel and your eyes on the road. Activating the voice commands is very helpful and safer than using your phone in speaker mode or with your ear plugged up by wearing a bluetooth-to-cell receiver. You never have to look at or touch your phone to make or answer calls.
Question: Can you plan a route starting from a location other than your current location
Answer: Base Camp is awesome but you can do what you are asking without it. You do so by creating a "trip". In specific, there is an "App" included which is loaded onto the phone called something like "Trip". You specify the starting and ending points of your trip. They don't have to include your current location. I created a trip with 10 cities, and it created 10 "legs" of the trip, you might say, from City A to City B and then City B to City C, etc.
Question: Does this unit come with a windshield mount and power cord
Answer: It comes with a suction windscreen mount. It also has a power cord designed for 12v vehicle utility socket (cigar lighter socket). The provided power cord actually contains the traffic receiver. While the unit can be powered via other USB-connector sources, you will not be able to take advantage of traffic updates without use of the supplied power cord.
Question: does the power cable to the car have the outlet for the traffic antenna
Answer: According to a comment left by the manufacturer, "the 2599LMTHD (and any other Garmin automotive device with a T or THD in the model name) does not require any additional purchase to receive traffic. The traffic receiver for this model is embedded in the device itself. The vehicle power cable included in the packaging is required for traffic as it doubles as the device's traffic antenna." This comment from the manufacturer can be found in the Amazon review "Great Voice Command GPS" October 10, 2014 By L Vrieze. http://www.amazon.com/gp/customer-reviews/R3FZUBUZEQS9GE/ref=cm_cr_pr_rvw_ttl?ie=UTF8&ASIN=B00N41US72

¹If you purchase a nüMaps Lifetime subscription (sold separately or bundled together with certain GPS models), you will receive up to 4 map data updates per year, when and as such updates are made available on Garmin’s website, for 1 compatible Garmin product until your product’s useful life expires or Garmin no longer receives map data from its third party supplier, whichever is shorter. A product’s “useful life” means the period during which the product (a) has sufficient memory capacity and other required technical capabilities to utilize current map data and (b) is capable of operating as intended without major repairs. A product will be deemed to be out of service and its useful life to be ended if no updates have been downloaded for such product for a period of 24 months or more. Unless otherwise stated, the updates you receive under the subscription will be updates to the same geographic map data originally included with your Garmin product when originally purchased. In some instances, your Garmin product might not have sufficient memory remaining for you to load an update to the map data, in which case you will need to either (a) select reduced map data coverage for your updates, or (b) purchase separately a microSD™/SD™ card (if and as applicable to your Garmin product) and load all or a portion of the map data coverage for your updates to the card and insert the card into the microSD/SD card slot contained in your Garmin product. If neither of the measures in (a) or (b) can be used to address your product’s lack of sufficient remaining memory, then Garmin may conclude that the “useful life” of your product has expired. Garmin may terminate your nüMaps Lifetime subscription at any time if you violate any of the terms of this agreement or your subscription. Your nüMaps Lifetime subscription may not be transferred to another Garmin product.

User questions & answers

Question: How long does the Garmin 2557 stay charged if it isn't hooked up to "power
Answer: It stays powered for abuot a week in a half once you have fully charged it. The 2597 is the best buy for the money. It also lets you talk threw it once your phone is on it's bluetooth connection
Question: does the unit come with preloaded maps of Europe
Answer: There are lots of contradicting answers on the multiple threads. I spoke with Garmin Support and he recommended the 2577 SPECIFICALLY for this reason. The online description ( https://buy.garmin.com/en-US/US/on-the-road/automotive/2013-line/nuvi-2577lt/prod122520.html ) also lists both maps.William - If yours did not, it seems you overpaid because the 2597 is the same device at less money PLUS it has Lifetime Maps. Chas / Mark / D. - Do all of you have the device and physically confirmed it doe not have Europe? Again, this is counter what Garmin said to me about 1hr ago.
Question: Can you choose a route to avoid an area (such as New York CIty) you know you do not want to travel through
Answer: In my experience you have to set a via point so the GPS will route in the direction you want. For example. I travel from central KY to northern WI. The GPS will route me through Chicago and all the toll roads and traffic. So I set a via point at Normal, IL after I have entered my WI destination. The GPS will ask you if it's a new destination or if you want to add it to the active route. You choose "active route" and you get the opportunity to pick where in the line-up it goes. So you can set multiple via points if you wish.
Question: Is it easy to operate
Answer: The Garmin 2557 is very easy to operate. Much easier than my old 740. You just turn it on and say "voice command" and it will then ask you what you want to do, with several items on the screen to choose from, such as "find city" you then say "find city" and it will then ask you what city and you tell it and it will find it and ask if you want to start navigation, you say yes and away you go. To find an address, you say "find address" and it will say "speak an address" you tell it the address, the city and the state, all right at that time, and most of the time it will ask "do you want to begin navigation?" you say yes and again, away you go. Sometimes, if you don't speak plain or in a steady fashion, it may ask "did you say" and if you didn't you just say no, and you begin again. Also it lists several places on the screen and if you see what you said, just tap it with your finger and that will be entered. I havent had to type anything into it since I have had it and I did take two out of state trips with it. So far it has all been voice activated, and it doesn't have to learn your voice, it will work with other people just as good.

A traffic receiver’s “useful life” means the period during which the receiver (a) has the required technical capabilities to utilize current traffic data service and (b) is capable of operating as intended without major repairs. Traffic content not available for all areas. See traffic coverage areas.

²If you purchase a nüMaps Lifetime subscription (sold separately or bundled together with certain GPS models), you will receive up to 4 map data updates per year, when and as such updates are made available on Garmin’s website, for 1 compatible Garmin product until your product’s useful life expires or Garmin no longer receives map data from its third party supplier, whichever is shorter.

Question: Does this unit say "recalculating" when you miss a turn? I hate that. I've seen answers here for this unit that say both it does and it doesn't
Answer: Our Garmin doesn't, but I have to tell you that we love it and wouldn't be without it. I love the double screen when you get to the highway signs and it is hard to figure out which one to follow -- no more since we bought this Garmin. Love it. Judy
Question: what iscontained in the shipping box ina nuvi2557 lmt
Answer: The unit itself, charging cable the manual CD and the windshield mount. Everything you need.
Question: Is there a charger to use in my car
Answer: The cable that is supplied with the 2555LMT that connects to the cars power supply charges the device as well as operates it features when in use. The self contained battery in the 2555LMT is able to operate the device for about 2 hours before it needs to be recharged. So it is quite handy if want to take it out of the car and use it to walk around the city. It does have 2 modes, car and walking. I leave my unit plugged int the cars power supply all the time even if I am not using it and it is turned off. That way the battery is always fully charged. It is designed in such a way so that it will not allow itself to be overcharged, there is a screen prompt that tells you that it is charging, fully charged, and or powering down.
Question: lmt or 2595lmt which one is preferred
Answer: i bought the 2595LMT for $129 and couldn't be happier. the bluetooth works great and the voice recognition has been perfect. very intuitive navigating menus with voice. you can say walmart and it find you walmart. when speaking full addresses it is better to say " four six zero zero" than "forty six hundred". so far it has understood everything i say to it, which amuses me. without these 2 features i may as well have kept my 5 year old nuvi since it has never failed me. hope i get as lucky with this one.

User questions & answers

Question: How large is the display
Answer: This model has a 6.95" display.
Question: Is the smart phone traffic updates more reliable than the HD Traffic cable
Answer: I also find it very much more reliable. I have a Garmin with standard LMT and it often reports "no traffic" (problems) while I'm sitting in an 8-mile backup. This DriveSmart 61 is fast and accurate at least in the Seattle Metro area zones (as in from Olympia to Everett, WA. Because of this I'm replacing that one ( an 2699 LMT HD) with another DriveSmart 61.
Question: what is the release date
Answer: Shows all model's release dates: http://www.poi-factory.com/node/42240
Question: Does this unit come with the traffic cable in the box or does it need to be purchased separately
Answer: Old question I know but felt it might be needed to clarify, this GPS can work with the app or the GPS cable. The difference in the two is accuracy and range, the app will get a larger more accurate view of traffic by looking at vehicles with a Garmin GPS inside than comparing these vehicles speed to the speed limit of the road. The cable works by radio a special band that is used to inform others of heavy traffic it can work pretty well but is reliant on the radio stations it can pick up (about 20-30 miles) and how accurate these reporting are (some rarely use this while others will but never remove the notice after it's been cleared). The app offers for features and gives you a larger look of traffic around you even hours away and in some chases re-route you early on so you can avoid heavy traffic if possible but this requires mobile data to use. The cable is less reliable and it's usefulness depends heavily on how well the town you are in/near reports this information and also poor range (a reported delay of 30 mins is no good (re-routing) if it takes you 10 mins of being in bumper to bumper traffic to come close enough in range to see the alert, this isn't frequent but can happen when going thru large cities (Kansas City, Saint Louis, Memphis, Atlanta) etc you get the point.

User questions & answers

Question: is there a 110v cord available for this unit
Answer: All of these units have battery back up so you can never directly plug these into 110v. Any 2 amp cell phone/laptop chargers work or the provided 12v car adapter/charger. It also comes with a USB cord.
Question: Will this navigator allow me to choose my own route prior to leaving or does it only provide the "fastest" route
Answer: When you enter in a destination you will have an option to choose from 3 different calculated routes. If you are wanting to create a custom route to go down specific roads, there is a Trip Planner feature built into the device which will allow you to insert shaping points along a road to take a specific route.
Question: What is the expected battery life with a full charge? My neighbor says his lasts only about 35 minutes? Is this typical
Answer: My new phone 51 has a battery life of about 5 minutes! No longer even if plugged in overnight. It sucks for anything other than using it in the car. I do have a large auxiliary battery I use with my cell, and I can plug the 51 into that for a longer live. They sell another unit with a 2 hour life but I would not trust the data they at GARMIN have. I was very disappointed at the short battery life. I intended to use it in the city when I had to walk and not burn up cell minutes.
Question: What are the differences between garmin drive 61 lmt-s and garmin drive 60 lmt
Answer: Garmin Drive 61 LMT-S can use the GPS without a smartphone. You have purchase a Garmin Traffic Receivers: 1. Garmin GTM 60™ HD Digital Traffic Receiver 2. Garmin GTM 36™ Traffic Receiver (North America) Garmin Drive 61 LMT-S is compatible with Garmin Traffic Receivers: GTM™ 36 (North America) and GTM 60™ HD Digital Traffic Receiver
