14 best road bike computers
Road bike computers are electronic devices designed specifically for cyclists to enhance their riding experience and provide valuable data during their rides. These devices come equipped with various features and functions tailored to the needs of cyclists, including GPS tracking, speed and distance measurement, navigation, and more. Here are some key aspects of road bike computers:
GPS Functionality: Road bike computers are equipped with GPS receivers that enable accurate tracking of your route and provide real-time data on your current location. This information can be crucial for navigation, mapping your rides, and analyzing your performance.
Speed and Distance Measurement: These devices use GPS data or sensors to calculate your current speed, average speed, maximum speed, and the total distance you've covered during a ride. This data helps cyclists track their progress and set performance goals.
Navigation: Many road bike computers offer turn-by-turn navigation, allowing cyclists to plan routes and receive directions while riding. Some devices even support preloaded maps and can provide route suggestions based on user preferences.
Heart Rate Monitoring: Some road bike computers are compatible with heart rate monitors, either through built-in sensors or wireless connectivity to external chest straps. Monitoring heart rate helps cyclists maintain their training intensity and optimize their workouts.
Cadence and Power Metrics: Advanced road bike computers can also measure cadence (pedaling revolutions per minute) and power output (watts) when used with additional sensors or power meters. These metrics are valuable for serious cyclists looking to improve their performance.
Connectivity: Many road bike computers offer Bluetooth or ANT+ connectivity, allowing them to sync with smartphones or other cycling accessories like cadence sensors, heart rate monitors, and power meters. This connectivity enables data sharing, firmware updates, and smartphone notifications during rides.
Battery Life: The battery life of road bike computers varies widely depending on the model and usage. Some devices offer extended battery life, while others may require recharging after each ride. Battery life is an essential consideration for long-distance cyclists.
Mounting and Display: Road bike computers typically come with mounting options that allow cyclists to attach them securely to their handlebars or stems. The display varies in size and readability, with some models offering color screens and touchscreen functionality.
Data Analysis and Apps: Most road bike computers can sync with smartphone apps or desktop software, where cyclists can analyze their ride data, set goals, and track their progress over time.
Weather and Altitude Data: Some advanced units can provide real-time weather information and altitude data, which can be useful for planning rides and adjusting your efforts based on weather conditions and terrain.
Water Resistance: Since road bike computers are exposed to the elements, they are typically designed to be water-resistant or even waterproof to withstand rain and sweat.
Road bike computers come in a wide range of brands and models, each offering a unique combination of features and price points to cater to the diverse needs of cyclists. Choosing the right one depends on your specific requirements and budget, whether you're a casual rider or a competitive cyclist looking to optimize your training and performance.

User questions & answers
Question: | Does the heart monitor come with a chest strap |
Answer: | Yes, it does. |
Question: | If i don’t paired with phone when i ride, can i download the data later at phone |
Answer: | Yes! The Wahoo ELEMNT BOLT contains onboard memory so that you can ride entirely without your phone and sync those rides later via WiFi. Please see our article below on syncing your device for more details: https://wahoofitness.yonyx.com/y/conversation/?id=086c1921-53dd-11e8-8f6c-bc764e10d166 |
Question: | is the element bolt a stand alone bike computer or do I have to have my phone with me |
Answer: | It is a stand alone bike computer. It has GPS to track your speed and guide you on a route. (You can also link it to speed and other sensors on your bike.) Some of the features, such as re-routing to a new destination during the ride, would require your phone. You also need the phone to set up the computer and your data fields, which you only need to do before a ride. But aside from that, you don't need to have your phone with you. |
Question: | Hi, I need to see and know my heart rate on the screen. What do I have to buy axactively |
Answer: | Wahoo makes their own heart monitor strap. The TICKR and TICKRx should do the trick. I think any heart rate monitor strap will do as long as it can connect between Bluetooth or ANT+ though. |
Question: | Does it work with Varia |
Answer: | Yes |
Question: | does it come with a charger |
Answer: | No, it does not come with its own charger but you can plug the USB cable into most any USB port style charger, PC, laptop or even a powerbank to charge it. |
Question: | Will it automatically upload my rides to Stava through Bluetooth |
Answer: | Yes and no. When I finish a ride I turn bluetooth on on my phone and open the Garmin Connect app. It the phone usually syncs with the 520 plus and uploads the ride automatically to both Garmin and Strava. But sometimes I have to turn off the bluetooth on the phone and then turn in back on and then go into the Connect app and select sync for it to work. |
Question: | What is the standard mount that comes with the "unit only" vs. the mount with the mountain bike bundle? Seems like $50 more for a mount is alot |
Answer: | The unit comes with two mounts, both the standard quarter-turn style. One mount is the “out-front” bracket that puts the unit in front of the handlebars about 3 inches. The other is to simply mount the unit to anything you can put the rubber bands around (I use that one to mount the unit to the neck between the fork and my handlebars - it has two rubber band o-ring things that you wrap around and attach to itself). Long story short - it comes with everything you need to mount it to your bike. |

Strava Live Segments Help You Push to Perform
Garmin and Strava are bringing you even more ways to test your limits. You’ll still get alerts for segment starts and finishes and be able to virtually compete against your own PR and Strava friends with a redesigned second-by-second comparison that shows how you measure up. User questions & answers
Question: | Will it work on 20 inch wheels? (Recumbent wheels |
Answer: | This has a manual that allows for the coding of dozens of tire sizes. I’m sure it would work on a 20” rim. I would have to get home and look at the owners manual. I’m safely assuming you can. |
Question: | how can I keep the cateye padrone from resetting during a ride |
Answer: | 1. I was told this is a battery slightly loose problem and to add a piece of scotch tape to the back of the battery and re-install. I folded a 2" piece of tape in half to get rid of the sticky. Re-installed - It worked. NOTE: Don't forget to write your Odometer mileage down - it will reset 000 when you open the battery door 2. Also mounting the Pedrone on a stem that is angled up can cause resetting problems (was told this by the factory). |
Question: | There are several cateye padrone cyclo computers on thise site with different prices. Is there a difference in these computers |
Answer: | it seems to me there is a version without stopwatch feature ...and version with ... check !!! I bought the latter ...... the earlier may be an older model ... |
Question: | Does the Padrone have the interference issue with led lights like cygolites? I have a strata that drops out when I turn on my head light |
Answer: | I purchased a new bike recently and decided to buy a new Cateye Padron & head light (Kryptonite) at the same time. Mounted the extras to the handlebars and calibrated the Padron. No issues.....until....riding at night with my light on. It took me a few night rides to put 2 and 2 together, but I finally discovered the interference PROBLEM associated with the Padrone. Quite frustrating as I ride almost exclusively at night during the summer months. My FIX is putting a layer of foil tape around the light. Somehow that mitigates the interference problem and I can once again log Ride miles on the Padrone....but man, my light is ugly as sin now! |

User questions & answers
Question: | does the "unit only" come with any bike mount |
Answer: | Yes, buying the “unit only” for the $199 does give you a basic mount system. Essentially what it is is a mount that is then held on with a couple of sturdy rubber bands that as of so far I’ve had no loss in faith for keeping the garmin securely on my stem. |
Question: | anyone used this for a century ride and did it have enough battery life |
Answer: | I just used it on a 5 hour ride over 137 kms with a few stops along the way. I had auto pause so it never switched off. I am using gps only (no Glonass etc) and a RideSense speed and cadence sensor and it had a Bluetooth connection going to my phone the whole time. At the end of the ride I estimate it had about one third battery left based on the icon. Hope that helps. |
Question: | Will this work with my existing Garmin heart rate strap |
Answer: | Yes, this product will work with your Garmin HRM. |
Question: | Can you pause a ride and charge it before finishing a ride and it counts as one ride. My edge 25 instantly ends any ride in progress if charging |
Answer: | I tried this out on mine, to see if I could tell. If you plug it into a cable that is not connected to a computer (just a USB charging port), then it will not interrupt your ride, as far as my attempts went. However, if you connect it to a computer where it triggers the USB/data connection, it does seem to interrupt the ride. So, any method that charges it without causing a data connection - this should be good. |

Wherever you ride, you’ll have access to the best, most up-to-date information so you can have a smooth ride — no matter how challenging the trail.
Own Every Jump
With Edge 530 on your stem, you’ll capture every bragworthy stat. It tracks the epic details with new MTB dynamics such as jump count, jump distance and hang time. So, when you huck an incredible 20-footer, you’ll have the recorded data to prove it. Edge 530 also has ratings for Grit and Flow. Grit rates the difficulty of a ride using GPS, elevation and accelerometer data. Flow measures how smoothly you descend a trail. Take Your Training to the Next Level
Your Edge 530 device goes beyond data collection — providing dynamic performance insights that can help you beat your best. See how your body is holding up in different environments with heat and altitude acclimation (when paired with compatible sensors). Get in-ride notifications when it’s time to hydrate or eat. See if your last 4 weeks of riding were balanced in terms of endurance, threshold and high-intensity efforts. When paired with compatible Garmin sensors, you can even access power curve, a new power tracking metric. No matter where you train, you can sync structured workouts from Garmin Connect and TrainingPeaks right to your Edge. You can also view your upcoming training for the week and launch into the relevant workout seamlessly when required.
Climb Like a Pro
Climbing can become your secret weapon with Edge 530 and the new ClimbPro feature. It automatically shows the remaining ascent and grade when you’re climbing while following a route or course. This helps you gauge your effort over the course and see how much you have left to suffer.
Ride with Confidence
When you’re cleaning the rock garden at 20 miles per hour, you need a device that takes safety seriously. Edge 530 allows for group messaging and tracking, so you can stay in touch when your friends are out of sight (when paired with a compatible smartphone; see safety and tracking features requirements and limitations). User questions & answers
Question: | Is there a pause function, so slow rolling while eating or resting a bit wont drag down your average speed |
Answer: | It calculates the miles continuously, so you can stop and continue and the mileage will add. The time will continue regarless. this is good for watching speed, but I have switched to using the Openrider app on my cell. It has more features that your looking for. |
Question: | Can the sensor go on either front fork with this slim model |
Answer: | Yes. Sensor can mount on either fork. |
Question: | Will this work with an mtb with the 110mm boost hub spacing |
Answer: | Yes it will. |
Question: | Does it come with a mount and will it work on a fitness bike |
Answer: | Yes it comes with a mount. No, it probably won't work on a fitness bike. If by fitness bike you mean a stationary indoor trainer that only has a flat disc in the front. Then definitely not. The reason being is the cateye sensor hardware needs standard bicycle parts to attach to. You'll need to attach the cateye sensor to the front fork, and attach the small magnet to a spoke on your front bicycle wheel. |
Question: | The picture of the computer seems to show an elevation at the bottom. Does this computer track your cumulative climbing of a ride |
Answer: | oes not show cumulative climb. Does not show elevation. Not sure what the number at the bottom portrays. I think this computer will show total number of pedal revolutions for a ride. You display cadence (revolutions per minute) and then scroll using the middle button. It will show max cadence and total number of revolutions for the ride. |
Question: | How do I remove the "computer" from the handlebar bracket? Please answer me quickly |
Answer: | Hello, it slides out (upwards), facing the unit to read it hold the handlebar bracket in place and push the unit away from you, it should slide out. |
Question: | Does this offer HR ranges or alarms or timers |
Answer: | No. Just the basics: HR set in three target ranges, distance, speed, cadence, etc. Superlative customer service. Mine went on the blink after a very wet ride, and they replaced it for free. |
Question: | dose it come with cadence transmitter thanx |
Answer: | Yes, it's wired. |
Question: | Questions: 1.) Description says 'max cadence'. Does it display actual cadence while riding? 2.) does the wheel magnet have an adhesive backing |
Answer: | The cycle computer can and does display actual or current pedaling cacdnce. It will be displayed in the very top L shaped shaded area of the display. Sometimes it will require you to press and hold the large button found on the computers top edge for 3-4 seconds or so to "wake up" this display feature. The computer will also keep track of your maximum cadence for each ride updating it each time you exceed or achieve a new maximum. Your average cadence is tracked and constantly updated or recalculated too. You can display average OR max cadence at any time by cycling the lower right button till one or the other displays on the bottom row of data and alternate between average OR max cadence by pressing the bottom left button. The wheel magnet attaches to a spoke. It clamps on and does not have an adhesive backing. Be careful not to over tighten it or the steel threads will strip the plastic of the clamping/mating half. There is a second magnet for the cadence feature. It is to be attached to the pedal crank arm. It is secured with a zip tie. It does not have an adhesive backing either. You can add some of your own but I believe the zip tie is definitely needed since I think an adhesive tape would not adequately secure the magnet. An epoxy glue such as j b weld may work but make sure the magnet is properly aligned to the chain stay mounted pickup sensor first or you will be in for a challenging repair. |

User questions & answers
Question: | I believe the sensor and the computer are attached to the bike by O rings. Is this method secure to hold the items firmly in the correct position |
Answer: | I would suggest using cable ties to secure both the sensor and computer respectively. The O ring alone is not good enough. |
Question: | Where does the display mount? Can it mount to either the handlebar or the stem |
Answer: | Can mount to either handlebar or stem. |
Question: | Does it retain memory after batter change, especially miles ridden |
Answer: | Yes. |
Question: | Does it have a backlight |
Answer: | No. It's not rechargeable, so a backlight wouldn't be a good idea for this unit. Get something that is USB rechargeable. |

User questions & answers
Question: | does this unit keep a history of your rides or is that accomplished by syncing to strava or like app |
Answer: | Hi there, the PACE 2 only has one version. There is no premium version available. |
Question: | How effective is the trailforks integration for mtb users whose primary interest is navigating unknown trail systems? Heard mixed reviews |
Answer: | Yes, all COROS watches have VO2 Max estimate, along with other sport science metrics. |
Question: | Does this sync with a Garmin HR strap |
Answer: | In my experience, under normal use the nylon strap doesn't retain a lot of moisture. I usually sponge off any excess moisture and it dries off pretty quickly. I haven't gone swimming, but expect that might cause more retention. |
Question: | Does the "device only" package include any mounting hardware |
Answer: | Good vibration strength! |

See how your body is holding up in different environments with heat and altitude acclimation (when paired with compatible sensors). Get in-ride notifications when it’s time to hydrate or eat.
