14 best zoom dsl modems
Product description
The Zoom Model 5345 is a 343 Mbps cable modem certified for money-saving own-your-own cable modem programs by Comcast XFINITY, Time Warner Cable, and other leading cable service providers. Charter Spectrum approved. Owning a certified own-your-own modem eliminates modem rental charges that are typically $8 to $10 dollars per month. The Model 5345 Gigabit (10-100-1000 Mbps) Ethernet port connects to your Windows or Macintosh computer, router, wireless access point, HomePlug adapter, or other Ethernet-enabled device. When used with a router, the high speed Internet service can be shared with multiple devices. The number of channels supported by a cable modem is the primary indicator of a modem's top speed. This modem is 8x4, which supports eight channels for downloads, and four channels for uploads. Eight channels for data downloads make this modem up to twice as fast as competing modems that support only four channels. Because this 8x4 modem uses the cable network more efficiently, average download speeds can be faster, even for service speeds below the modem's top speed of 343 Mbps. A Full-Band Capture Digital Tuner lets service providers deliver faster, more reliable Internet. The 5345 is certified by CableLabs to support the latest DOCSIS 3.0 standard plus DOCSIS 2.0 and 1.1 for use with older cable systems. IPv6 and IPv4 are supported for powerful, flexible network addressing. With its easy installation, high speed, compact size, and extensively tested compatibility, the Model 5345 is the perfect choice for almost any cable modem user. The Model 5345 has been tested and certified by CableLabs to work with nearly all U.S. cable services. The Zoom 5345 is covered by a two year warranty and quality technical support by Zoom Telephonics, a Boston based company founded in 1977.

User questions & answers
Question: | Is it compatible with Mac Sierra |
Answer: | The power light is obviously indicating the modem is getting AC power. It should light up solid gren. The DSL light indicates the status of connection with the ISP's DSL equipment. It should also be solid green. It will flash green as the training or synch process is underway. The flashing green will speed up as the training process completes. Solid green is normal, solid red indicates no connection to the ISP's DSL equipment. The internet globe determines the authentication of the modem to the ISP's network. A properly authenticated modem will show the globe green and will flash according to the amount of data flow. An amber or red globe indicates an authentication problem. Typically the PPP user name or password is incorrect. If the globe does not light up at all then the DSL is probably incorrectly wired at the ISP's facility. Power and DSL will light up if the modem is connected to any port at the ISP's equipment. However the globe won't light up if the wiring to an unassigned port or a port that hasn't been properly provisioned. Lights 1 thru 4 are Ethernet port activity lights. They light up and flash with data flow anytime and Ethernet cable is plugged into the yellow ports on the back of the modem. In some computers the motherboard isn't always "hot" so shutting down the computer will turn out the corresponding port light on the modem. The wireless light indicates the wireless broadcasting is turned on. This light will flash anytime there is data flow. The WPS light indicates the wireless broadcast is using Wi Fi Protected Security. This can be disabled in the modem interface accessible via a browser page address of 192.168.0.1 |
Question: | Have you corrected the issue of use with mac os sierra |
Answer: | All the WPS button is doing is Enabling security for your modem. That way your connection wont be open for just anyone close to your home can jump on and use. It will not Effect your ROKU OR COMPUTER. Only thing it may do after pressing the WPS button is make you 1 time on each device type in the default password or Pin, which All that info is on the bottom of your Modem. I have had to have 5 diff Modem/routers replaced by Centurylink! They either stop working fully on their own, or lighting seems to only hit the modem, even though its on a surge protector that cost a bunch cause if the electricity goes out the type of surge protector I have keeps juice going to everything plugged into it for about 2hrs depending on what all is on and running. But I have I think 6 other devices plugged to my surge protector and non of the others ever r hurt only the POS Centurylink Modem blows. Anyway sorry to get off track, U 100% need to have your security enabled in the first place! An thats just what WPS is.= WIFI PROTECTED SETUP. |
Question: | How long is the cord that comes with it |
Answer: | You can use any Modem/router as long as its ADSL OR ADSL2. I would Recommend getting the ' TP-LINK TD-W8980 N600 Wireless Dual Band Gigabit ADSL2+ (Non-Cable) Modem Router, 2.4GHz 300Mbps+5Ghz 300Mbps, 2 USB Ports for File Sharing, IPv6 Compatible' Its 2.4ghz and 5Ghz(Dunno if you need that or not but its a better brand than ANY of the modems CenturyLink Offers! I have been with them since 2014 And have had to have 5 replacement modems sent!! They just stop working, start acting nuts, or with the least little bit of lighting seems to always hit it and blow, even though I have it connected to a surge protector along with a PS4,BASIC TALK,TV, PHONE BASE and nothing else has ever been fried but that damn CenturyLink ZXEL PK5001Z has blown 3 times. I have even had a Tech that had to come out and work on a speed issue and told me their equipment is Garbage and Its def best to find a diff brand than the ones by CL. Only upside about if you do use a CL modem/router combo, is your only gonna pay 100bucks for the modem is you buy it, but luckly I was renting the modems I had when they stopped working or were hit by lighting, so Free brand new replacement. I just bought the TP LINK modem a month ago and its 100000% better. Only other Modem I would suggest that is decent from CL is the ' C1100T Technicolor Modem' or ' Technicolor C2000T Modem' |
Question: | Apple's fax modem doesn't work on new 64-bit iMacs. Does this one |

Question: | Does this modem have five portholes and does it take my comcast phone |
Answer: | Yes |
Question: | does this modem have a time warner cable phone port |
Answer: | The switch will not respond to snmp query. It only has a packet counters on its web management page. |
Question: | Is this modem an upgrade to 5341J? What is the difference between them |
Answer: | This switch is unmanaged and most likely won't function the way you're going to want. There may be some uplift if you can configure LAGG in the Synology software and let the NAS handle it. I would recommend going to a 2.5gb nic, if capable and just run it to one of the 2.5gb ports on the switch. |
Question: | Does this works with Comcast and Windows |

User questions & answers
Question: | Will this modem work on my Frontier DSL line |
Answer: | The TD-8616 is just a modem, meaning it will convert between the type of signal your computer can use (Ethernet) and type that goes over your phone line (ADSL2+).The TD-8816 is a modem and a router, the router allows you to share a single Internet connection with multiple computers at the same time. This gets a little more complicated since for most people you are going to connect this to some wireless access point which will also act as a router. Having two routers in your home connected to each other can cause issues such as double-NAT.In short if you want to connect this directly to your computer with a single wire, buy the TD-8816 so you get the add protection of the router/firewall. If you want to connect this to a wireless access point (I suggest a TL-WDR3600 as a cost effective solution) buy the TD-8616. You may need to call your ISP in either case to help get it setup. |
Question: | Does anyone know what is the difference between TD-8816 and TD |
Answer: | Works for me on CenturyLink, but i had to call tech support to get the PPPoE login and Password which is different than your Centurylink account login and PW. |
Question: | centurylink |
Answer: | The confusion stems from the fact that in recent years, most home internet access has moved to all in one devices that fulfill multiple roles. However, there are many functions that are part of providing internet access and each can potentially be assigned to seperate devices. In most home internet access you have:A modem - this is specific to the type of service you have (cable or DsL). Its job is to translate the signal from your service provider into something your local device can understand. Usually this is done by coverting the signal to Ethernet.A router - this device takes the signal from your modem and does a variety transformations to it to allow multiple devices to connect to the internet. It is usually also the device that hands out addresses to your local devices. It is also known as your gateway, as all traffic to and from the internet goes through it.A switch - this device takes care of distributing the signal from your router to all devices that are physically connected on your local network. This is almost exclusively done over RJ45 CAT 5 cabling. Looks like an over sized phone plug.A wireless access point - this device takes care of distributing the signal from your router to all device that are connected wirelessly to your local network. There is a wide variety of types protocol to do this with 802.11 a, b, g, n and ac being the most commonly in use.To simplify things for end users, many devices combine multiple functions into one. The most common device type at this time is one that combines a router, switch and wireless access point into one unit so that all you have to do is connect your provider's modem and maybe go through a few setup screens. The TD-8816 combines combines a modem and a router and goes from a phone line to Ethernet. The TD-8817 combines a modem and a router and goes from phone line to either Ethernet or USB. It also appears to have the ability to disable its router allowing you to turn it into a simple modem. This how some people would use it if they had a single PC and no need to share the connection. Your computer would then become a router of sorts but with only itself as the member of the local network. Most users nowadays do not use this configuration. Sorry for the long post. Hopefully this helps. |
Question: | I am now confused about the difference between the tp-link td 8817 and 8616, based on responses by jonathan hanson on 3/23/14 and as atwood on |
Answer: | If you mean voice activation like Alexa, I dont think so. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Can I connect it to my computer for Ethernet connection |
Answer: | yes. It can if you have Internet service as part of your cable package |
Question: | Does this work with RCN cable/internet service |
Answer: | Only RCN can answer that question. I can say that this modem will handle at lease 110 Mbps because that was what I had. It did not handle 300Mbps. The modem worked perfectly and was very reliable. |
Question: | What kind of router is best to use with this modem |
Answer: | That is a very hard question to answer in a limited amount of space. First, think about getting the Model MG7310, which incorporates an N300 wireless router. You will probably save some money and you will reduce cable clutter, increase reliability (wiring connections are a frequent source of trouble) and save desk space by incorporating both modem and router in a single device. If the MG7310 won't work for you, here are some very general rules, but the choice of a router is definitely an individual decision that has to factor in price and performance. If you are in a dense setting like a high rise building or a dense condo or apartment complex, get a dual band wireless that has both 2.4 GHz and 5 GHZ frequency support. But that assumes your connecting devices like phones and computers support 5 GHz. If you live in a very large house, or a house with masonry walls rather than sheetrock, you will want WDS support in case you need to use a range extender. With that said, if you have a 50 Mbps cable service or slower, an N300 router will probably meet your needs and save you some money. Much more could be written on this topic, a search of the Internet should provide additional information. |
Question: | Do I need to contact my cable provider that I am changing my previse cable modem for this one, or will it work out of the box |
Answer: | Short version: Use your provider's self registration website, or whichever of their customer service methods work best for you. Long version: The cable modem will go online once powered and connected to a coaxial cable with good signal parameters. You still need service authorization from the cable modem termination system. Some cable internet service providers have self registration websites. Connect the coaxial cable to the modem, an ethernet cable to a computer, and connect the power cord to an outlet. This may also work over a wireless router and with wireless devices, but just using a computer can help isolate any setup issues. When your modem first goes online, the CMTS may recognize a foreign modem and direct your web browser to the registration website. If not, the registration website can be manually searched for, which is where a secondary internet connection of some sort can come in handy. If you have your account information already, the only other thing you may need to add is the CMAC, or Cable modem Media Access Control address. Some registration systems can detect this automatically. This is the number that distinguishes your modem from all of the others, and should be on the modem if not also on a label in the box. At the end of the process, the modem will probably restart on command of the CMTS. Once it is back online, test your internet connection. You may need to power cycle the modem (unplug it and plug it back in) or reset it (hold the reset button for long enough) before using it with other equipment, most commonly a wireless router. This particular product is just a modem, so if you previously used the wireless network coming out of the cable company's equipment, you would also need your own wireless router or other networking equipment. This whole process can often be done ahead of time and the new modem plugged in later, but be advised that the previous modem (if it is still online) will lose its service. Also be aware that if the wiring leading to an old modem has issues, changing modems will not fix the real issue and is not likely to make the service any better. |

Answer: | The MB8600 modem will work with any WiFi router. Given the speed of the MB8600, you should be using at least an AC1900 router and given the other devices in your network, you might be able to take advantage of a wireless speed even faster than AC1900.The Ethernet port on the MB8600 simply plugs into the WiFi router of your choice. The router should be current enough to have a Gigabit WAN port (10/100/1000 Ethernet port), since you will need that for the speeds that the MB8600 can deliver. And for now, 1 Gbps service is the fastest cable service Comcast is providing in the US. When Comcast or other cable Internet service providers begin providing service speeds over 1Gbps, the MB8600 has the bonded Ethernet ports which will allow the MB8600 to deliver speeds above 1 Gbps. We are not aware of a consumer-home/small office router that does Ethernet port bonding today, but they are coming. Ethernet port bonding is available on Enterprise level routers (routers used in large organizations), but we can't recommend that class of product for a consumer at this point. They are more complicated than you need and more expensive. Bonded Ethernet ports for consumers will appear by the time Comcast is ready to begin delivering speeds above 1Gbps and the MB8600 will be ready to deliver those speeds. In summary: Use at least an AC1900 wireless router Be sure the router you choose has a Gigabit Ethernet WAN port. |
Question: | Does this use the now-notorious Intel Puma 6 chipset |
Answer: | Model MB8600 and all Motorola products use Broadcom chipsets and do not have the problem associated with the Puma 6 chipset. |
Question: | Do all four Ethernet ports on this modem output the same amount of bandwidth or are there only certain ports that operate at maximum capacity |
Answer: | The reason for four ports on a modem requires some explanation. It is important to understand the MB8600 does not do routing. The MB8600 is a modem only. A router can be connected to any of the MB8600 GigE ports. The link between the router and the modem is then capable of using the full rate of the one Gbps service Comcast currently can provide with their new DOCSIS 3.1 service. In the future, Comcast and other cable services are expected to offer services faster than on 1 Gbps. When those faster services are offered, the additional ports in the MB8600 will be needed. Ports 1 and 2 can be bonded to allow up to 2 Gbps to be delivered by the MB8600. The other two ports on the MB8600 are there to allow additional port bonding for speeds over 2 Gbps. When Comcast has service speeds over 1 Gbps, the router connected to the MB8600 also needs to do port bonding to take advantage of the port bonding in the MB8600. Routers used by consumers today do not support port bonding. Some routers used in corporate networks do support port bonding. In the future, routers used in homes and small businesses will be sold that support port bonding so they can take advantage of future service speeds that will be faster than 1Gbps. In summary, the four ports on the MB8600 are there to allow the MB8600 to deliver service speeds above 1 Gbps WHEN THOSE SERVICES ARE AVAILABLE. That is good design. Think twice before you buy a modem that pretends to offer speeds above 1Gbps and does not have multiple ports that can be bonded. You can not get a speed above 1 Gbps unless you have a way to get the fast speed out of the modem. The MB8600 is designed to allow speeds above 1 Gbps to be delivered to a router with bonded GigE ports. Other modems are not as well designed. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Why does it say 4x ethernet ports in your description where there is only one |
Answer: | Because Amazon hasn't corrected their product subscription. I submitted one two weeks ago and has yet to be done. If you need more than 1 ethernet port, then this one is not for you. This has only (1) 2.5 Multi-Gig port. |
Question: | Does netgear cm500-1aznas work with tds provider |
Answer: | Yes. But you need to call the TDS customer service and provide your CMAC or SN to register your device. These numbers are on the box and the unit |
Question: | Can you use a phone to ethernet splitter for voice to work |
Answer: | I have never heard of a phone to internet splitter, at least not expressed in those terms. However, for VOIP (which means Voice Over Internet Protocall), you must have at least one phone jack in a modem, or a modem-router combination. Some modems have two such jacks, which could provide two different "lines." Most importantly, you must have your internet service provider's PERMISSION to install and use such a modem, or modem-router combination! My own ISP (Wow, aka Wowway.com) REFUSED to give such permission because that would cut into their profits, since they would no longer receive a monthly FEE to RENT their age-old junk, much of which are at least five years old, which is like a millenia in this day of super-fast-paced electronic offerings. I had to send back every VOIP-capable modem I bought from Amazon and other places because my ISP REFUSED to enable them to work with their so-called service(s). Talk about anti-competitive business practices ... U.S. Federal Trade Commission (FTC), are you paying any attention? |
Question: | I understand that this modem says it will only work with xfinity. but has anyone tried this with spectrum? (aka time warner cable |
Answer: | Hello. I am writing this Dec 2, 2020 and just activated this modem 2 days ago with Spectrum. It is not on the list of approved modems, but oddly enough the CM400 is. I just told the tech support who activated it that it was compatible and it's worked fine with no problems. I went from 100-120 mbs on my 100 mb plan to 250 to 450 mbs, still on the 100 mb plan. This modem is not on the list of approved models but it seems to work fine so far without periodic latency/drops like the Arris model from Spectrum had. |

User questions & answers
Question: | How is this model different than the arris surfboard sb |
Answer: | The sb6121 only has speeds of 172 Mbps download and up to 131 Mbps upload. This model has up to 343 Mbps download and 131 Mbps upload. |
Question: | Going with the cable modem option what’s the best router to pair this with for spectrum |
Answer: | It depends on your needs. Needs are based on the number of devices connected and the size of area you are trying to cover. I would highly recommend a mesh network unless your home is 1200sqft or smaller. A centrally located router could cover that. The biggest problem is getting the 5ghz frequency to reach throughout the home. The 5ghz gives you speeds over 30mbps on wireless devices. 5ghz will reach roughly 40ft in all directions from your access point (ap). A mesh system gives you multiple ap and thus more area covered by the 5ghz. |
Question: | How many devices can connect at once? Is that that the 8x refers to |
Answer: | The 8x doesn't refer to the number of devices you can connect to it. You only want to connect one device and that's your WiFi router. You wireless router determines how many devices can be connect based on the available number of ip addresses on the wireless device. The 8x refers to the speed of Data Over Cable Service Interface Specification (DOCSIS). Its informing you on the speed of DOCSIS 2.0 vs the newer DOCSIS 3.0. Ultimately your speed will be determined by how much you want to pay your internet provider. And you can determine how many devices you want to connect by the router you choose. |
Question: | Do I also have to buy a router for the modem? And to make sure it obviously speeds up internet connection right |
Answer: | If you only need to have one computer hooked up to the internet you do not need a router. If you want to hook up more than one computer or if you want a wireless network, you will need to buy the appropriate router. My internet speed went from 20mb to 100mb(the speed I pay extra for). TWC has also stopped charging me $8.00 a month for the use of their inadequate equipment. |
