6 best wireless routers with modems
Wireless routers with modems, often referred to as "combo routers" or "modem-router combos," are networking devices that combine the functionality of a modem and a wireless router into a single unit. These devices are commonly used to provide both internet connectivity and local wireless networking in homes and small businesses. Here's what you need to know about wireless routers with modems:
Internet Connectivity: The modem component of these devices is responsible for establishing a connection to your internet service provider (ISP).It typically comes with ports for connecting to your ISP's network via a coaxial cable (for cable internet) or a DSL line (for DSL internet).
Wireless Router Functionality: The router part of the combo device allows you to create a Wi-Fi network within your home or office. It manages the distribution of internet connectivity to multiple devices through Wi-Fi and Ethernet connections.
All-in-One Convenience: Combining a modem and router into a single device reduces clutter and simplifies your network setup. It can save space and eliminate the need for two separate devices.
Compatibility: When choosing a wireless router with a modem, it's crucial to ensure that it is compatible with your ISP's network technology (cable, DSL, fiber, etc.). ISPs often provide a list of approved modem-router combos, so you can check for compatibility before purchasing.
Speed and Performance: These devices come in various models with different capabilities. You should select a modem-router combo that supports the maximum speed provided by your ISP's plan to ensure optimal performance.
Wireless Standards: Look for a combo device that supports the latest wireless standards like Wi-Fi 6 (802.11ax) for faster and more reliable wireless connections, especially if you have many devices connected simultaneously.
Security Features: Like standalone routers, combo devices should include security features such as WPA3 encryption, firewall protection, and the ability to set up a guest network for added security.
Built-in Features: Some modem-router combos include additional features like USB ports for network-attached storage (NAS) or printer sharing, parental controls, and Quality of Service (QoS) settings for optimizing network performance.
Firmware Updates: Regular firmware updates are essential to keep your modem-router combo secure and up-to-date. Manufacturers often release updates to address security vulnerabilities and improve functionality.
Customer Support: Many manufacturers offer customer support and documentation for setting up and troubleshooting their modem-router combos. Online resources and user communities can also be helpful for resolving issues.
Wireless routers with modems provide a convenient and space-saving solution for home and small office networking needs. When selecting one, consider your internet plan, the size of your space, the number of connected devices, and the specific features you require to make the best choice for your networking setup.

User questions & answers
Question: | What does "AC1200" mean |
Answer: | AC means that the router has support for the 802.11ac (or Wi-Fi 5) wireless networking standard, which offers fast WiFi network connections on the 5GHz frequency. 1200 means the max Mbps is 1200 |
Question: | Does the box come with the necessary cables? (e.g. power cord and coax cable |
Answer: | It does come with a power cord and either net cable. A coax is not needed since cable company should connect their end directly to the modern. |
Question: | Does this modem have netgear genie |
Answer: | Hello Thank you for contacting us. It has Netgear Genie App Management. Any questions please contact us again. Thanks. |
Question: | I see many ppl asking about a router and answers say “modem only” but the description says wifi modem combo. what am i missing |
Answer: | The confusion is due to the illogical way Amazon links questions and answers to products. There are several different products listed on this one product page. Some are just modems, others are modem/router combos. Unfortunately, all the different products on this page share the same questions and answers which aren't relevant to one another. If the description on the product you have selected says it's a modem/router combo, then it's a modem/router combo. The people saying it's only a router are answering the question based on the product their viewing or have purchased. This is a problem that effects many products throughout the Amazon site. |

User questions & answers
Question: | what is the range on this modem. we are having trouble picking up a strong signal. Moden router is downstairs and the streaming tv is upstairs. Thanks |
Answer: | Depending on how many walls or floors and the materials it has to pass through, I suspect the range to be able 100-150 feet. We have this router in an office building and the plaza next door to us (approx 250 feet) can see our signal. Downstairs and through a concrete floor, people who are only 20 feet away can get 1 bar of reception because the signal is trying to pass through cement. If you're using this with a wood floor, carpet or tile, you should still be getting decent signal. |
Question: | Is this modem compatible with window 8.1 devices |
Answer: | Yes. I am using 8 Windows 8.1 devices, and multiple TVs, Roku boxes, Android phones and tablets as well as several DirecTV receivers in wireless and wired situations. It should be compatible with pretty much anything that uses a wired or wireless connection. |
Question: | is this better and faster than the westell ultra line 3 i have from verizon. and if i buy this one can i hook it directly up with no problems |
Answer: | I know it was better than the one I got from Verizon-much faster, and no problem what ever in hooking it up. Buying this was the best thing I did. I plugged it in, and that was it-simple. |
Question: | Will this work with Verizon Fios Quantum |
Answer: | It is not compatible with Verizon FIOS at all, at least that was written on the box I received (although not mentioned anywhere on the description on the site). |
Question: | I have a smart tv that does not have wifi, will this box bring the internet to my tv |
Answer: | No, you will need some kind of adapter to the TV that sorts out TV feeds. I highly recommend Amazon FireTV or Roku for that. This router (box) connects that TV device to the internet, enabling your TV to receive Netflix, Amazon Prime TV, etc. |
Question: | Does this router come with a small stand to prop it up? (so it has a smaller footprint, similar to AT&T modems propped vertically |
Answer: | This one does not have a stand, however it does have a mount that allows you to mount the router to the wall. |
Question: | Is it possible to create 2 independent networks with this router |
Answer: | I don't know. I am not using it now since I got U-verse. AT&T sells their own router. |
Question: | can any body tell me the range for this device please |
Answer: | The specs and features indicate it is for a small home. I would assume that it means a one-bedroom one-level home, depending on whether you have cement or wood-frame, two-bedroom with more of an open plan could still possibly work fine. http://us.dlink.com/products/connect/wireless-n150-home-router/ |

User questions & answers
Question: | It seems impossible to connect a display via usb-c. use thunderbolt usb-c for video, then you can't charge the macbook air. why |
Answer: | The SBG7600AC2 USB 2.0 port supports connected hard drives with SAMBA and DLNA Media Sharing. In addition to supporting USB 2.0 hard drives, the USB port can be used as a charging connection for mobile devices. Note that the USB port does NOT support Internet connection. |
Question: | Received today and it is not new. already unwrapped. how do i return to get a new one, like i ordered? or get discount for receiving an open box item |
Answer: | Contact Amazon for return and replacement. |
Question: | Has anyone noticed their wifi will cut out randomly with this product throughout the day |
Answer: | Yes, this is happening increasingly. I bought about 3 months ago. The problem started maybe a couple of weeks later. Now, it’s multiple time, every day. The provider company says they can’t fix. Arris said I was only getting 1 upstream channel, instead of 3. And that was the cause of the intermittent WiFi. You can check your status by typing 192.168.100.1 in browser. Scroll down past your downstream list to see your upstream list. Each line represents a channel. An Arris rep also told me to ask for a ‘tier 1 supervisor’ at the internet provider company. Otherwise, they won’t know how to assist you. That’s where I’m at now. They’re sending a tech out to check everything. I’m just not sure they can fix my upstream problem. We shall see. |
Question: | It's impossible to get a true perspective of this modem/router because the reviews and questions are for many Arris products. How is this possible |
Answer: | I have Optimum as my ISP and my Arris modems have been very reliable. I had an Arris TM822A that worked perfectly since 2013. I wanted to stop leasing so I purchased the Arris SB6183 as an upgrade and it is working fine for the last 2 weeks. I would only buy one of two Arris. The SB6183 (16x4) or the SB8200 (32x8). I would not buy the Arris SB6190 /TM602/TM1672) or anything with a Puma 6 chipset. The Puma 6 chipset from Intel has a defect that firmware has still not fixed. You can google that chipset to see the issues with latency. If the Arris works with your cable company, I don't see an issue buying one of the two mentioned. BTW, the two are modems only, no router or telephone connection. |
