9 best n900 routers

The N900 router is a type of wireless router that falls under the category of networking products and computer accessories. It is designed to provide high-speed wireless connectivity to a network, making it suitable for various home and small business networking needs. Here are some key points about N900 routers:

  1. Wireless Standard: N900 routers typically support the 802.11n wireless standard, which is also known as Wi-Fi 4. This standard offers faster data transfer rates and improved wireless range compared to older Wi-Fi standards.

  2. Dual-Band: N900 routers are often dual-band, which means they operate on both the 2.4GHz and 5GHz frequency bands. This dual-band capability allows for better performance and reduced interference in congested wireless environments.

  3. Speed: The "N900" designation usually refers to a maximum combined wireless speed of 900 Mbps. This is achieved by using multiple data streams and multiple antennas (MIMO technology) to improve wireless performance.

  4. Multiple Antennas: N900 routers typically have multiple antennas, often three or more. These antennas help improve wireless coverage and signal strength throughout a home or office.

  5. Gigabit Ethernet: Many N900 routers come equipped with Gigabit Ethernet ports, allowing for high-speed wired connections to devices such as computers, gaming consoles, and network-attached storage (NAS) devices.

  6. USB Ports: Some N900 routers feature USB ports that can be used for connecting external storage devices or printers, effectively turning the router into a network-attached storage or print server.

  7. Quality of Service (QoS): N900 routers often include QoS features that allow users to prioritize certain types of network traffic, ensuring that critical applications like online gaming or video streaming get sufficient bandwidth.

  8. Security Features: Like other routers, N900 models include security features such as WPA/WPA2 encryption, firewall protection, and guest network support to help protect the network from unauthorized access.

  9. Parental Controls: Some N900 routers offer parental control features, allowing parents to manage and restrict internet access for specific devices or users.

  10. Brand Variations: Various networking companies manufacture N900 routers, so specific features and capabilities can vary between models and brands. Popular manufacturers include Netgear, Linksys, and ASUS.

  11. Firmware Updates: It's important to keep the router's firmware up to date to ensure it remains secure and functions optimally. Manufacturers often release firmware updates to address security vulnerabilities and improve performance.

N900 routers are a versatile choice for users who require robust wireless connectivity and fast wired connections for their home or small office networks. When selecting a specific N900 router, it's essential to consider factors such as brand reputation, user reviews, and compatibility with your specific networking needs.

User questions & answers

Question: Can it run on 220 voltage
Answer: Yes. It can run on 100 V to 240 V. It's listed in the specifications and on the outside of the box.
Question: Is the firmware installed in this router "flashed" with DD-WRT? It only says that it is "VPN server support". What does that mean
Answer: The factory asus firmware is very full featured and supports VPN. I came from a dd-wrt router and am happy with the features of asus stock firmware.
Question: What is the range on this router? I have a crappy Vizio Smart TV and have a hard time receiving a signal in an 1800sqft home
Answer: I have a 2200 sq ft home and have had no issues at all. My previous router would drop all the time. This one hasn't dropped yet, and I have had it for 10 months. 2 smart phones, 1 desk top, 2 laptops, 2 Roku devices, and an IPod. I would recommend it to everyone.
Question: This vs the Netgear Nighthawk. I recently bought the "Hawk" for $136. I know the "Hawk" is better but is this a close second for $37 less
Answer: It depends what you are using it for, the nighthawk supports 802.11ac, and a very fast processor. The rt-n66w has great third-party firmware support, and supports the same speeds on wireless N as the nighthawk. If you're just looking for an access point, this is more than enough. If you want to use your router as a gateway, dhcp server, dns server, media server, samba server, printer server, vpn server, ftp server, and everything else, then the nighthawk might be a better choice simply because it has more computing resources. I personally use the rt-n66w as my gateway, dchp, dns, and vpn server, and have everything else on another server, and the rt-n66w is more than adequate. tl;dr: The rt-n66w is more than adequate for 99.999% of users
Question: What is the power consumption w/ no HDD
Answer: 1) As to actual watage, I don't have an answer. It does appear to be nominal. Power will be less w/o a HDD though.2) The fan is variable, based on factory settings. The hotter the environment, the higher the speed. There have been reports of a "noisy" fan, though in my environment it is not an issue. If it is in a general living area or bedroom, only the buyer can know how much impact it'll have.3) A router's nature is to provide service 24x7, therefore no inactivity shutdown is designed into the product. The power consumption (for my environment) is one very small part of my overall power-footprint of my home, therefore it has not been an issue.Note: Sound from the device is not dependent on the HDD specifically. Since the HDD may be derrived from multiple sources, how noisy the HDD is, is entirely dependent on the HDD. There does not appear to be any sound dampening insultation. The fan though; when running a quiet HDD is audible. It depends entirely on the setting where it is installed.I hope this helps.
Question: Does this com with a Hred Drive
Answer: WNDR4700 (Does not). WNDR4720 Should come with a hard drive. UNLESS someone is selling a WNDR with a bundled in added Hard Drive
Question: Does router support spin-down or sleep-mode for internal 3.5" hard drive
Answer: I have a model WNDR4700 and it is based on the same system as your N900. To the best of my knowledge and experience none of the Netgear Centria models allow a sleep mode for the internal hard drive or an external USB drive. The drive must stay active at all time for access by any one with a network conection. They could have put a sleep mode in the firmware but appear to not do it for 24/7 full access. Bugs me too but you can turn off the network to save the electricity.
Question: Does it make any noise? Does the hard drive ever goes into stand-by? Would you be comfortable with the router in a bedroom
Answer: This is a good router that I am pleased with. However it does make a fair amount of noise, and I would not put it in my bedroom.
Question: Does this support DDWRT
Answer: I use ddwrt on 3 other routers, and it's very nice.I've found the interface has enough options that ddwrt is not needed, if it's available.
Question: How robust are the parental controls? Can you restrict by category and individual mac addresses etc
Answer: I am satisfied with the parental controls. You can restrict the times that anyone is on, you can restrict by MAC address, by URL or keyword. I am restricting by all of these things actually. To my knowledge you can't restrict by category, say adult sites in general. However my children know that I can see every website that they visit so that is enough to keep them honest. If you enter enough keywords you can probably block particular categories, such as adult sites. Finally if you go to the ASUS website you can download the user manual and it will show you all of the controls you can work with. Hope this helps.
Question: We need to use up to 8 devices at once occasionally in our home, will this router cover that
Answer: My Current office has this router, with 6 servers running a high availability cluster, and a web server, along with 6 ip phones, 28 office computers, 2-24 port gigabit switches, along with 3 laptops, 2 windows 10, and 1 mac, and 4 iphones. I also have 2 large network copiers, and 6 network printers, I Think your laptops, tablets, and phones will settle just fine with this router. Be sure that you dont put the router in a hot or humid environment. keep it in a cooler environment in your house.
Question: what is the range of the router
Answer: That is not an easy answer. It covers my house which is 1800 sq feet. Range really depends on number of walls, floors, ceilings between the router and the end device. Also the 2.4 band may be congested with not only your neighbor's routers as well as bluetooth and microwaves. The 2.4 normally has the greater range compared to the 5. sorry I cannot give you a more definitive answer but as I indicated there are too many variables to be able to give a firm it will cover this many sq feet or this many feet from the router. There is a web site smallnetbuilder.com that has lots of good info on router tests and 3rd party firmware that is available. There is a person that goes my Merlin that modifies the Asus firmware adding fixes and features to the rt-n66u but still keeping close to the OEM firmware, unlike other 3rd party firmware should you feel adventurous. You kind find out about his firmware on the smallnetbuilder forums. Hope this helps. Bottom line, this is one of the best routers available currently in my opinion ans many others as well. --bill

User questions & answers

Question: Does this Router allow you to set Device by Device restrictions? Like setting up times that devices can use the internet, etc
Answer: I think you are referring to MAC Address Filtering, usually used to block wireless devices from even being able to get anywhere near your network (theoretically). I have this same router but V1 and while it used to be called MAC filtering, over the past updates they for some reason made it extremely difficult to find. If this V2 is like my updated V1, it will be called Wireless Card Access List, and it can be found under the Advanced tab, under the categories below that called Advanced Setup and under Wireless Settings. At the bottom of Wireless Settings you will see Wireless Card Access List, there click the button showing Set Up Access List. It's tricky to use. If you have Turn Access Control On checked, then unless that MAC address is on that list, it won't be able to even try to connect and you won't see it attempting. As long as you have the MAC address from the wifi device then this being ON is find and you can proceed to add it to the list. If you don't know the MAC you may need to uncheck that box and go out and back into the router for the list to update and it show you the MAC to the device you are trying to add. Not idea but a work around. Like I said, for some reason Netgear made MAC Address Filtering way too difficult. Maybe the V2 is completely different than this, but I'd imagine it's the same sadly. Hope this helps you.
Question: how far is the range on the netgear n
Answer: I just had this router installed by my ISP. I'm very impressed with it so far. I have a 2 acre lot around my 3700 square foot house. It covers the first acre of it at 2.4Ghz and covers the entire house at 5Ghz but doesn't go very far outside. Of course limited range is one of the things about 5G.
Question: Will this router work with the Kindle Fire HDX
Answer: Having just purchased and installed this device, I can connect a laptop, but when I try to connect my Kindle HDX 8.9 OR my windows phone, neither can connect. I have the device setup in WAP mode (wireless access point), and both devices see the connections (both 2.4 and 5), but the windows phone says there is no response and cancels, while the Kindle starts to connect, and then will sit for hours 'getting IP address', 'Authenticating', 'Saved', and then repeat the process over and over again, never connecting, and never stopping to try and connect.I believe there is a problem with the software when placed in WAP mode, but cannot be sure. Cisco support is a complete waste of time, so I am searching the internet for an answer.
Question: Is this a version 2 model? The picture shows a USB 3.0 port which signifies it's a version
Answer: Although the description and photos indicate a v2, this is *not* a guarantee that you'll get the newer hardware. The -100PAS extension indicates that the packaging and other materials are specialized for the Canadian market, for which there are also v1 and v2 revisions of the hardware. Netgear didn't change the model number when they introduced the v2, leading to much confusion for retailers. For both this and the other listing with the -100NAS extension (ASIN:B0081H8TRA NETGEAR Wireless Router - AC1750 Dual Band Gigabit (R6300)) you will currently receive either the v1 or v2 model, randomly, depending on what gets grabbed off the shelf.

Answer: Hi Li Tong,You should have the WNDR4500 (v1). If it's a v2, it should be reflected in the model number on the back of the unit. Please get in touch with us at [email protected] if you have further questions!Regards,NETGEAR Team
Question: Has anyone had good experience with two users streaming video simultaneously, say one YouTube and one on Roku? Also, any specific issues with a Roku
Answer: I have not had any problems with youtube being used by multiple users but I do not have any experience with Roku.
Question: Okay, dumb question maybe, but is this a modem and router, or do I need a separate modem
Answer: This Netgear router can be used as both a router and a modem. The general answer is that you will not need a separate modem between this router and your internet service provider (ISP). However, your ISP may require you to use one of their modems to access the internet, and this may be a good idea when settings get digitally buggered-up. If you access the internet via the ISP's modem, then the ISP can help-out in resolving some basic signal problems because the ISP can remotely access their modem to determine what the problem is and probably fix it remotely. If you do not use their modem, then you are pretty much on your own when settings and performance inadvertently get scrambled. My ISP is Comcast and they provide a modem that is connected between the internet and my Netgear WNDR4500 router. I have been very pleased with the performance of both appliances. You can peruse the operator's manual for the WNDR4500 at this web address: http://documentation.netgear.com/wndr4500/enu/202-10875-02/usermanual.pdf. The documentation is quite good. Check-out the section on set-up procedures.
Question: is it compatible with Comcast XFINITY Extreme 50 internet and Digital TV
Answer: I have COMCAST just for the internet. the 50 mbps is minmin. My download clocks in @ 57 or 58 almost always, my upload clocks in @ 12 to 13 mbps. This router really made a world of difference. I have tried severial routers brands. this brand, this router model is GREAT !!! never had anything come near to this. Speed ,ease of hookup, looks, softwear. my wifi on smart phone galaxcy s111, is even faster than direct line to new hp, desktop.. 62 or 63 download.I'm 100 % satisfied. will never waste time on any other....

User questions & answers

Question: Are the USB ports USB 3.0 or
Answer: I can't say with any certainty that the ports are all 2.0 or 3.0 or one of each. I have only one peripheral that is a USB 3.0 and it doesn't work with the router because the router will not recognize it as a back up disk. I can tell you that one port is black on the inside and the other is blue if that helps. My understanding is that blue represents USB 3.0. Sorry I can't be more helpful. Other reviews debated the same question.
Question: Can I expect this router to have a range of at least 200 to 300 feet? My office is about 200 feet from the location where I need WiFi capability
Answer: I think the effective range is about 150 feet in a residential environment.
Question: Is this compatible with hard drives that use the USB port for power, such as the My Passport Ultra or Slim
Answer: Yes. That it what I have in it right now it's 1 TB that is USB powered and it's pluged in and works perfectly.
Question: Does the wd my net n900 have a modem installed
Answer: I tried to mix the modem with the router and everything just slowed down. After some research I went back to the two items. I have a fast modem that doesn't need upgrading, but the router is a dual channel and the old one would only care part of the speed that I carry so trying this one and see if the 300Mps that I pay for is worth it.

User questions & answers

Question: Does the N900 Central support Windows
Answer: I don't know why it wouldn't. Most software that doesn't have an 8 app will load on the Desktop. However, I don't recommend it. I have at least 6 WD drives from 500GB to a 4TB MYCloud and have had no problem with any of them. But, I don't think WD was ready for routers. I had to hard reboot mine at least twice a day. I had to return it and go with NetGear.
Question: Pardon my ignorance, but does this replace a TimeWarner router? If not, can it be used in conjunction with TimeWarner
Answer: If you have a separate modem with your Time Warner router than you can replace that with this router. Most internet providers are tending to provide a combined unit that acts both as the router and the modem. You can add this router to you network with the Time Warner router however there are a few important things to do in setup that will not be in set up wizard. If you want to give it a try use manual setup turn off DHCP service, give Time Warner address as the gateway address, it will be something like 192.168.0.1 and assign an address on your network to this router where first three sets of numbers match you routers address. Good luck
Question: Is the power adapter build for 230 - 110V or just 110V
Answer: 110 only
Question: Is the USB port 3.0 compatible
Answer: Don't buy it. It's a peice of junk. You'll be reseting it everyday at least 4 or 5 times. Support for it is terrible. Just do a google search on the internet connection dropping and you'll see. Go with the Asus.
