13 best dsl modems

DSL (Digital Subscriber Line) modems are crucial networking devices used to establish high-speed internet connections over existing telephone lines. Here's what you need to know about DSL modems:

  1. DSL Technology: DSL is a type of broadband internet connection that uses the copper telephone lines installed in most homes and businesses. DSL modems enable data transmission over these lines, providing an internet connection with faster speeds than traditional dial-up.

  2. Splitting Signals: DSL modems work by splitting the telephone line signal into two frequency bands: one for voice communication (low-frequency band) and another for internet data (high-frequency band). This allows users to make phone calls while simultaneously using the internet.

  3. Types of DSL: There are various types of DSL technologies, including ADSL (Asymmetric DSL), VDSL (Very High Bitrate DSL), and DSL Lite. Each type offers different speed capabilities and may be suitable for different internet usage scenarios.

  4. DSL Modem vs. DSL Router: DSL modems typically come in two forms: standalone modems and modem-router combo devices. Standalone DSL modems only provide the internet connection and require a separate router for distributing the connection to multiple devices. Modem-router combos, on the other hand, integrate both functions into a single device, simplifying setup.

  5. Installation: Installing a DSL modem involves connecting it to a telephone jack and configuring the necessary settings provided by your internet service provider (ISP). The modem's settings may include your ISP's username and password, connection type, and other parameters.

  6. Data Speeds: DSL internet speeds can vary significantly depending on factors like your location and the type of DSL technology in use. While DSL may not offer the ultra-fast speeds of cable or fiber-optic connections, it is still capable of providing reliable internet service for various online activities.

  7. Compatibility: Before purchasing a DSL modem, ensure that it is compatible with your ISP's network and the DSL technology used in your area. ISPs often provide a list of approved modem models.

  8. Security: It's important to configure security settings on your DSL modem or modem-router combo to protect your network from unauthorized access. This includes setting up Wi-Fi passwords and enabling encryption protocols.

  9. Maintenance: Regularly updating the firmware of your DSL modem can improve its performance and security. Check for firmware updates on the manufacturer's website or through the device's management interface.

  10. Obsolescence: As technology evolves, older DSL modems may become obsolete, and ISPs may stop supporting them. It's a good idea to periodically check with your ISP to ensure your modem is still compatible and supported.

In summary, DSL modems are essential networking devices that enable high-speed internet access over traditional telephone lines. They come in various types and configurations, so it's essential to choose the right one for your specific needs and ensure compatibility with your internet service provider. Proper installation, configuration, and maintenance are key to ensuring a reliable and secure DSL internet connection.

User questions & answers

Question: is it compatible with netgear nighthawk x6 router
Answer: Will work with any router especially a better but any router i s fine
Question: This is a modem/router or just a modem
Answer: Router and Modem combined. Router has all the functionality you need for home network. Firewall/DHCP/Port forwarding etc. I just put my wireless router in Firewall/DHCP OFF and made it a wireless access point. Plugged the DM200 into a LAN port of the wireless router and now all wireless clients have internet/LAN access. Great having a router/modem in one box under $100.I have Century Link. They are unfortunate souls....clueless. They couldnt make their ADSL2+ modem work. Come to find out they have VDSL and didnt know it. What a bunch of bozo's :) Once I had my PPPoE login and password the DM200 took it from there.Firewall test show the DM200 is totally stealth. DM200 is easy to configure and a great little Router/Modem combo.
Question: Will this work with at&t dsl
Answer: Be certain it is actual AT&T DSL not UVerse DSL. The line between the two is often blurred in many areas.
Question: Will this work with windstream vdsl (not bonded
Answer: I have it. Yes. You have to set it up as vdsl pppoe. Search up the user manual for it and go to that section.

User questions & answers

Question: Why is this labeled c2100t when in the picture it clearly says the unit is a c1100t
Answer: When i bought mine the pictures where of the correct device. I am not sure why Amazon changed the product.
Question: Does this work for bonded vdsl
Answer: It does work for bonded vdsl2
Question: Is this a router and a modem? Also, is there any lag when streaming through wifi
Answer: This is a pretty decent modem/router. However I did notice some lag when I pushed it hard via Wifi. Specifically having 2 Apple TVs streaming, along with internet use, would cause issues. I do not see this lag when I use my R7000 router, and set up the modem in bridge mode. Overall, I would say this is the best modem/router combo I have used, but not as good as a high performance router - especially if you have a lot of Wifi devices. If your TV streaming devices are on ethernet, then this performs well, but Wifi is not as good as a high end router.
Question: Can it work with centurylink Fiber
Answer: Yes. I use it with Centurylink Fiber now.

User questions & answers

Question: Will this unit work with our centurylink adsl service
Answer: I think the main difference is that the C3000Z's wireless is 5G compatible.
Question: How is this different/better than the C1100Z
Answer: CenturyLink installed the C3000Z as the router to use for their gigabit fiber service - so yes, it does work with 1gb from CenturyLink. I wouldn't call it a modem, although they refer to it as such because that's what most people think is used to connect to the Internet but it is a decent enough router for most people's needs. We'll be upgrading to an ASUS router in the near future for more flexible configuration and better penetration in our home.
Question: Can this modem handle 1gb from Century Link
Answer: Yes, I have Centutylink with a bonded connection and run Netgear for my router
Question: Does this support bridge mode so you can use your own router
Answer: Just wanted to say that the set up was fairly easy, but NetGear was great to make sure we had all completed. Their customer service was very impressive. I recently upgraded to a higher speed via Windstream and it came with a new router/dsl unit and so far so good, BUT I will be reconfiguring and going back to the NETGEAR unit when I have time.

User questions & answers

Question: What does "AC1200" mean
Answer: AC means that the router has support for the 802.11ac (or Wi-Fi 5) wireless networking standard, which offers fast WiFi network connections on the 5GHz frequency. 1200 means the max Mbps is 1200
Question: Does the box come with the necessary cables? (e.g. power cord and coax cable
Answer: It does come with a power cord and either net cable. A coax is not needed since cable company should connect their end directly to the modern.
Question: Does this modem have netgear genie
Answer: Hello Thank you for contacting us. It has Netgear Genie App Management. Any questions please contact us again. Thanks.
Question: I see many ppl asking about a router and answers say “modem only” but the description says wifi modem combo. what am i missing
Answer: The confusion is due to the illogical way Amazon links questions and answers to products. There are several different products listed on this one product page. Some are just modems, others are modem/router combos. Unfortunately, all the different products on this page share the same questions and answers which aren't relevant to one another. If the description on the product you have selected says it's a modem/router combo, then it's a modem/router combo. The people saying it's only a router are answering the question based on the product their viewing or have purchased. This is a problem that effects many products throughout the Amazon site.

User questions & answers

Question: Why does it say 4x ethernet ports in your description where there is only one
Answer: Because Amazon hasn't corrected their product subscription. I submitted one two weeks ago and has yet to be done. If you need more than 1 ethernet port, then this one is not for you. This has only (1) 2.5 Multi-Gig port.
Question: Does netgear cm500-1aznas work with tds provider
Answer: Yes. But you need to call the TDS customer service and provide your CMAC or SN to register your device. These numbers are on the box and the unit
Question: Can you use a phone to ethernet splitter for voice to work
Answer: I have never heard of a phone to internet splitter, at least not expressed in those terms. However, for VOIP (which means Voice Over Internet Protocall), you must have at least one phone jack in a modem, or a modem-router combination. Some modems have two such jacks, which could provide two different "lines." Most importantly, you must have your internet service provider's PERMISSION to install and use such a modem, or modem-router combination! My own ISP (Wow, aka Wowway.com) REFUSED to give such permission because that would cut into their profits, since they would no longer receive a monthly FEE to RENT their age-old junk, much of which are at least five years old, which is like a millenia in this day of super-fast-paced electronic offerings. I had to send back every VOIP-capable modem I bought from Amazon and other places because my ISP REFUSED to enable them to work with their so-called service(s). Talk about anti-competitive business practices ... U.S. Federal Trade Commission (FTC), are you paying any attention?
Question: I understand that this modem says it will only work with xfinity. but has anyone tried this with spectrum? (aka time warner cable
Answer: Hello. I am writing this Dec 2, 2020 and just activated this modem 2 days ago with Spectrum. It is not on the list of approved modems, but oddly enough the CM400 is. I just told the tech support who activated it that it was compatible and it's worked fine with no problems. I went from 100-120 mbs on my 100 mb plan to 250 to 450 mbs, still on the 100 mb plan. This modem is not on the list of approved models but it seems to work fine so far without periodic latency/drops like the Arris model from Spectrum had.

User questions & answers

Question: Does it come with set up instructions
Answer: You can. Most people would use a old router like a hub just to get more than the 4 ports. Be sure the radio is off for the second router. If you do use the WIFI radios be sure to change the channels so that they are different between the two.
Question: can you add another router
Answer: The one I bought on Amazon did not have a "warranty". It was used. But when I did not need it and requested a return they did give me my money back in full but that was less than 2 weeks after I ordered it. Please always read any policies about returns when you are thinking about your purchase with anything on Amazon.
Question: what sort of warrenty does this come with
Answer: I had to return this modem/router because CenturyLink has service issues in my area. I had to switch to cable.
Question: Will this work with 1 Gig speed from CenturyLink
Answer: With the RV132W router you do have two options to connect to the Internet -either using the Fast Ethernet WAN port (UTP copper cable with RJ-45 connector) or the ADSL2+ port (runs over a standard telephone cable with RJ-11 connector). More about the product you can find at https://www.cisco.com/c/en/us/products/collateral/routers/small-business-rv-series-routers/datasheet-c78-736464.html

TP-Link ADSL2+ Modem, Up to 24Mbps Downstream Bandwidth, 6KV Lightning Protection (TD-8616)

  • Up to 24Mbps downstream bandwidth
  • One Phone line port and one 10/100M Ethernet port
  • Built-in firewall protects against Internet attacks
  • 6KV Lightning Protection avoids the damage from thunderstorms

User questions & answers

Question: Will this modem work on my Frontier DSL line
Answer: The TD-8616 is just a modem, meaning it will convert between the type of signal your computer can use (Ethernet) and type that goes over your phone line (ADSL2+).The TD-8816 is a modem and a router, the router allows you to share a single Internet connection with multiple computers at the same time. This gets a little more complicated since for most people you are going to connect this to some wireless access point which will also act as a router. Having two routers in your home connected to each other can cause issues such as double-NAT.In short if you want to connect this directly to your computer with a single wire, buy the TD-8816 so you get the add protection of the router/firewall. If you want to connect this to a wireless access point (I suggest a TL-WDR3600 as a cost effective solution) buy the TD-8616. You may need to call your ISP in either case to help get it setup.
Question: Does anyone know what is the difference between TD-8816 and TD
Answer: Works for me on CenturyLink, but i had to call tech support to get the PPPoE login and Password which is different than your Centurylink account login and PW.
Question: centurylink
Answer: The confusion stems from the fact that in recent years, most home internet access has moved to all in one devices that fulfill multiple roles. However, there are many functions that are part of providing internet access and each can potentially be assigned to seperate devices. In most home internet access you have:A modem - this is specific to the type of service you have (cable or DsL). Its job is to translate the signal from your service provider into something your local device can understand. Usually this is done by coverting the signal to Ethernet.A router - this device takes the signal from your modem and does a variety transformations to it to allow multiple devices to connect to the internet. It is usually also the device that hands out addresses to your local devices. It is also known as your gateway, as all traffic to and from the internet goes through it.A switch - this device takes care of distributing the signal from your router to all devices that are physically connected on your local network. This is almost exclusively done over RJ45 CAT 5 cabling. Looks like an over sized phone plug.A wireless access point - this device takes care of distributing the signal from your router to all device that are connected wirelessly to your local network. There is a wide variety of types protocol to do this with 802.11 a, b, g, n and ac being the most commonly in use.To simplify things for end users, many devices combine multiple functions into one. The most common device type at this time is one that combines a router, switch and wireless access point into one unit so that all you have to do is connect your provider's modem and maybe go through a few setup screens. The TD-8816 combines combines a modem and a router and goes from a phone line to Ethernet. The TD-8817 combines a modem and a router and goes from phone line to either Ethernet or USB. It also appears to have the ability to disable its router allowing you to turn it into a simple modem. This how some people would use it if they had a single PC and no need to share the connection. Your computer would then become a router of sorts but with only itself as the member of the local network. Most users nowadays do not use this configuration. Sorry for the long post. Hopefully this helps.
Question: I am now confused about the difference between the tp-link td 8817 and 8616, based on responses by jonathan hanson on 3/23/14 and as atwood on
Answer: If you mean voice activation like Alexa, I dont think so.

User questions & answers

Question: Can an external antenna be added? Can the antenna power be increased
Answer: There is no external antenna port on this device. The antenna is built in. Antenna power cannot be increased.
Question: Is this comparable with frontier dsl
Answer: Yes, but Frontier refuses to drop the $10 per month fee for 2 years meaning their unit will cost you $240 over the course of 2 years.. Gigantic rip-off. Don't purchase if you are committed to their agreement. The FCC should be alerted to this Frontier scam!
Question: Can this router be used on Consolidated Communications
Answer: I don’t understand your specific question. I can only say, as rather IT savy person, I could not get this modem to connect to my DSL internet. I spent over an hour with Comcast and at the end, I requested a return of this device. I do not recommend this device, which has other reviews of being unable to connect.
Question: Is this compatiable with at&t
Answer: It did not seem to be. I sent it back.

User questions & answers

Question: So how do control the cable modem if comcast doesn't provide one
Answer: Once you install the modem you can either go online and register the device or call Comcast with the serial number. It will then activate and you are good to go. I’ve had no issues with mine at all. And online registration was very easy.
Question: Quick start quide says it doesn't have wifi capability or router. so, can i get to xfinitywifi wirelessly or not
Answer: Model MB7621 is a bridge modem, or a Cable modem without a built in WiFi router. You can either purchase an all in one (modem with the built in WiFi router) such as a Motorola MG7700, or purchase a a WiFi router to connect to the MB7621.
Question: Which one is better for my needs - the mb-7621 or the mb-7420? comcast highest speed for home use is 150 mbps and 100 for downloads
Answer: 3 things I can tell you. 1. The 7621 is 24 x 8 channels vs 16 x4 for the 7420. More channels means better flow of the data. 2. The 7621 can handle 1000 Mbps vs 643 Mbps for the 7420. Good for future upgrades of your internet speed if needed. 3. The 7621 came out in Dec 2017 vs 2015 for the 7420, newer tech, longer support from right now.

User questions & answers

Question: Does it support Band 12 - 700 MHz
Answer: Yes it works just fine using the ethernet port on your desktop connected directly to the Mobile Hotspot Router. I have even connected a multi-port Ethernet router and sent the Hotspot connection to other wired equipment.
Question: Confusion: How to use Wan port? I could understand wan port on router, but in modem.... What dose that means? What kind of advantage would it make
Answer: I have used mine with T-Mobile, Ting, Mint Mobile and "Onesimcards" onesimcard.com. ALL of them provide voice/text/and data services without any trouble when they are installed in this Mobile Hotspot Router. I agree their might be an issue regarding data speeds. In my situation I do not have a data only sim to experiment with.
Question: Is this device "unlocked" for use on other compatible networks
Answer: Verizon uses bands 2, 4,5 , 13, 66 depending on what tower you are located by. This device supports all but 13, which is the main band. Will it work, yes, but it is not 100% compatible. I would use cellmapper to find the tower closest to your location and find out what bands are used on that tower before purchasing.
Question: Will this work with a t-mobile sim card
Answer: Sweet sweet capitalism

User questions & answers

Question: Does this connect via phone line or coaxal cable
Answer: The Cisco RV132W router with product ID RV132W-A-K9-NA comes with US power plug whereas the RV132W-E-K9-AU comes with Australia power plug so if you are going to deploy the RV in Australia you would purchase AU version (RV132W-E-K9-AU). Please also note since the RV132W is wireless router there is also difference in the band plans between the US and AU product versions with the approved radio channels. For more information about the features you can visit the product data sheet web page at https://www.cisco.com/c/en/us/products/collateral/routers/small-business-rv-series-routers/datasheet-c78-736464.html
Question: Really, an Australia plug, for my US residence
Answer: When you use AT&T Uverse, you have to use AT&T gateway in order to get the service. Even though it doesn't mean you have to settle for the WiFi that it provides. That means you can use the RV132W router to boost your wireless to the level that you would normally expect from a router. The RV132W can be used behind the AT&T gateway, placed in either DMZ mode or IP Pass Through (https://www.att.com/support/smallbusiness/article/smb-internet/KM1188700/).
Question: does it work with att uverse
Answer: Yes, the RV132W does have embedded ADSL modem so it can be used as a second ADSL connection. However, you will need to confirm with your Service Provider whether it is doable or not splitting the line.
Question: Can this be used as a second adsl modem on a single residential line? i have one in one room and was wondering if i can use this instead of extender
Answer: According to their website, it is compatible with ADSL.
