14 best ethernet switch
An Ethernet switch is a fundamental networking device used to connect multiple devices within a local area network (LAN). It is a crucial component in both home and business networks, helping to manage and control the flow of data between devices. Here's what you need to know about Ethernet switches:
Function: An Ethernet switch operates at the data link layer (Layer 2) of the OSI model and is responsible for forwarding data frames between devices within the same network. It uses MAC addresses to determine where to send data packets.
Ports: Ethernet switches come with varying numbers of ports, typically ranging from 4 to 48 or more. Each port allows you to connect a device, such as a computer, printer, or another switch, to the network.
Managed vs. Unmanaged: Ethernet switches can be categorized as managed or unmanaged. Unmanaged switches are plug-and-play devices with no configuration options. Managed switches, on the other hand, offer advanced features like VLAN support, Quality of Service (QoS) settings, and network monitoring, making them suitable for larger and more complex networks.
Speed and Duplex: Ethernet switches support different speeds, including Fast Ethernet (100 Mbps) and Gigabit Ethernet (1,000 Mbps). Duplex options include half-duplex and full-duplex, with full-duplex being the preferred choice for most modern networks.
PoE (Power over Ethernet): Some Ethernet switches support PoE, which can supply power to devices like IP cameras, VoIP phones, and access points over the Ethernet cable itself, eliminating the need for separate power sources.
Layer 3 Switches: In addition to basic Layer 2 functionality, Layer 3 switches also offer routing capabilities. They can make routing decisions based on IP addresses, which is essential for more complex networks.
Uplink Ports: Many Ethernet switches come with uplink ports that allow you to connect them to other switches or routers. These uplink ports may support higher speeds than regular ports.
Rack-Mountable: Larger Ethernet switches are often designed to be rack-mounted in data center or network cabinet setups, saving space and providing better cable management.
Quality and Brand: When choosing an Ethernet switch, consider the quality and reliability of the brand. Popular networking equipment manufacturers include Cisco, NETGEAR, TP-Link, and D-Link, among others.
Security: Managed switches offer security features like VLAN segmentation and access control lists (ACLs) to help secure your network and control access to resources.
In summary, Ethernet switches are essential networking devices that enable the efficient communication of data between devices in a local network. They come in various configurations, including managed and unmanaged, with different port counts and speeds to suit the specific needs of your network. Consider factors like PoE support, Layer 3 capabilities, and security features when selecting a switch for your networking setup.

It's not just limited to Internet but any devices that wish to communicate with each other i.e. computer to Network Attached Storage (NAS) device, etc ... and usually those devices have gigabit Ethernet ports so they can communicate with each other at the gigabit speeds. |
Question: | how to get plug and play to work? 14 ports not putting out IP, have modem and wifi router connected, but cant get other ports to work |
Answer: | Make your flow as follows: Modem -> Wi-Fi Router -> Netgear 16-Port Gigabit Ethernet Switch. All your devices (up to 15 of them) will get their IP address from the Wi-Fi Router. You may also want to consider labeling your cables. I have two 16-port switches, one Unmanaged (for Internet) and one Managed (for private network), and all the cables are both color-coded and labeled. |

Answer: | No it is just a gigabit switch, 1 gps. Also, there are no uplink ports on this switch, some switches (mostly managed high end) have uplink ports that will do 10gbe. |
Question: | If i have true poe cameras, do i still need a poe injector, or will this switch allow me to connect 4 camera feeds to one output to the nvr receiver |
Answer: | Provided your cameras adhere to the 48V POE standard adopted by cisco, polycom, yealink, grandstream and others, then all is fine - but some consumer targeted devices cheat and use 12V power injectors with their own creative pseudo-POE putting 12V wall warts wired onto pairs of the Ethernet cable with their own (cheap) "power injectors" which are not compatible with the Ieee POE definition. I have yet to find a POE inserter that used 48V and was not compliant, so usually the voltage of the wall wart that ships with the product will guide you down the right path. |
Question: | Will this switch do 24v passive? The description is insanely vague |
Answer: | No. This provides 802.3af and 802.3at. The common 24v PoE used in this arena is a non-standard form favored by Mikrotik and Ubiquiti. For that, you are looking for an Ubiquiti EdgeSwitch/ToughSwitch. There may be others. It is safe to say that if a device supports 24v Passive PoE it will say so. 24v Passive is not a standard but is very common in WISP equipment. Devices which only say they support 'PoE' are indicating that they support 802.3af. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Will it work with a Cisco cablemodem (Cox |
Answer: | As long as the cabinet has some air space you should be fine. I have not noticed a heat issue while using this switch. |
Question: | Does anyone know if it has holes on the bottom for wall mounting |
Answer: | All switches act as repeaters or "boosters" to utilize your term. Cat-5 is limited to 100 meters which is about 330' . In the past I have placed switches at about 200' distance in large factory warehouses to run long distances. They recompile the wave length as attenuation starts around the 300' mark. |
Question: | what does it do |
Answer: | Yes, this is my exact setup. You can not only plug these into the Google Wifi puck that is acting as your main router, but also into any of the pucks you're using to create a stronger Wifi signal elsewhere. The small form factor actually makes these ideal for this scenario. |
Question: | Which port do I connect my router to |
Answer: | Odd that both answers managed to give a completely wrong answer (or, rather, an answer that ignores the reality of the situation). Yes, you can do that, in the sense that the switch doesn't have a dedicated input, so you can connect an Ethernet cable from your modem's output to a port on the switch, then another cable from another port on the switch to the input on the router, then a third cable from the router's output to a third port on the switch, and it should function the same as if you connected the router's input directly to the modem's output, assuming you don't actually plug anything else into it. However, and this is where the other 2 somehow managed to get the answer completely wrong, neither the switch, nor a modem that isn't also a router, is going to function as a DHCP server. As far as consumer devices go, that will require a router. So the above, which is a total waste of 2 of the 5 ports (as well as requiring an otherwise unnecessary cable), is the only sense in which the answer to your question is "yes". In every other sense, including, presumably, the way you actually meant it, the answer is "no", because something needs to act as a DHCP server for all of the devices connected to the switch. And, in your case, that thing is going to be a router. Put another way, your modem, if not acting as a router, is capable of assigning 1, and only 1, IP address. That's why a modem that's not acting as a router has 1, and only 1, active Ethernet port. A router functions as a DHCP server, which means that it's capable of assigning IP addresses to other devices that connect to it. Put even more simply, only 1 device can get to the Internet via a modem that isn't functioning as a router. Multiple devices can get to the Internet via a router. Therefore, logic dictates that you make the router the 1 device that can access the Internet via the modem and then connect everything else to the Internet through that. A switch like this isn't going to remove that limitation. So the router needs to be the only thing connected to the modem's output, so it unquestionably receives the single opportunity to access the Internet. Then a switch like this can be used to connect other devices to the router's output, since, unlike the modem, it's capable of granting multiple devices connected to it access to the Internet. |

User questions & answers
Question: | How can I get this to work with a macbook pro 2019? It currently does not work |
Answer: | Our switch could mount on the rack, wall or place on the table. The package contains mount brackets. |
Question: | How can i get this to work with a macbook pro 2019? it doesn't work and there are no drivers i can find. if you own a macbook, please link to driver |
Answer: | That is the "vlan" switch. It isn't a true vlan capability, but it blocks broadcast packets, so you can have (for example...) a DHCP server on the LAN side that doesnt interfere with a DHCP server on the upstream port. Most users will probably want to leave it on the "S" side unless you have a very good reason not to. |
Question: | Lost connectability with catalina 10.15.7. tried installer 2.16 and 2.18 from asix. no avail. any newer drivers |
Answer: | Yes, the mouse wheel is smooth, no bumping and fast, excellent for scrolling and so much more. I've used the 325 for a very long time, wearing many out over the past 24 years. |

Question: | Does it work with bsd, specifically pfsense v2.2.4 which is based off freebsd |
Answer: | I'm not sure on this specific model but I did use one made by TrendNet which uses the same ASIX AX88179 Chipset. The trendnet adapter worked fine with no issues in the latest version of pfsense (2.2.4). Although I can't tell you how long the device will work on a home network long term. I use it as a backup NIC in case the second hand PCI-e I'm using burns out. |
