13 best power line adapters
Power line adapters, also known as Powerline Network Adapters, are networking devices that allow you to create a network connection using your existing electrical wiring within your home or office. These adapters are a convenient solution for extending your network coverage or establishing a wired network connection in areas where running Ethernet cables is impractical or not feasible.
Here are some key points about power line adapters:
How They Work: Power line adapters utilize the electrical wiring in your building to transmit data signals. They typically come in pairs: one adapter connects to your router or modem, while the other plugs into the wall socket near the device you want to connect to the network, such as a computer, game console, or smart TV.
Data Transmission: These adapters use a technology called Power Line Communication (PLC) to transmit data over the electrical wiring. Data signals are modulated onto the electrical power waveform and are then received and demodulated by the receiving adapter.
Speed and Performance: The performance of power line adapters can vary depending on factors like the quality of your electrical wiring, distance between adapters, and electrical interference. In ideal conditions, they can offer speeds comparable to traditional wired Ethernet connections.
Encryption and Security: Many power line adapters offer built-in encryption and security features to protect your data from being accessed by unauthorized users. Popular encryption standards include AES encryption.
Compatibility: Power line adapters are generally compatible with most electrical systems, but it's essential to ensure that both adapters are on the same electrical circuit for them to work effectively. They may not perform well across separate circuit breakers.
Setup and Installation: Setting up power line adapters is typically straightforward. You plug one adapter into a power outlet near your router and connect it to the router using an Ethernet cable. The other adapter goes in the room where you want to extend the network, and you connect it to your device via Ethernet. Some models may offer Wi-Fi functionality as well.
Use Cases: Power line adapters are handy for extending your network to areas with weak Wi-Fi signals, connecting devices that require a stable and high-speed connection, or when it's not feasible to run Ethernet cables.
Limitations: Power line adapters may not perform optimally in environments with old or noisy electrical wiring, and their speed can be affected by other devices using the same electrical circuit. They are also less suitable for long-distance connections compared to traditional Ethernet cables.
In summary, power line adapters are a useful networking solution for extending wired network connections using existing electrical wiring. They are relatively easy to set up and can provide a reliable and stable network connection in situations where other methods may not be practical.

User questions & answers
Question: | Has anyone tried this setup with an extra wireless router at the end |
Answer: | Yes. I have a Linsys N on mine. You have to disable the DHCP on the slave router. Also you need to assign a static IP on the router. Use something like 192.168.1.250. Then only plug into the ports with the line from the wall unit and not into the internet/supply port. If you have a 4 port router with 1 internet port, you have to use one of the ports for the service so you can hook up 3 other direct connects. You then have to rename the wireless on the "slave" router to exactly match any other wireless providing service same with password. You need to make it a duplicate router. Good luck |
Question: | How secure this is? I assume it is not just limited to your house's internal circuit. Could it be accessed from outside the internal house circuit |
Answer: | These systems are hackable, but it takes a lot of work by a good hacker. Here's an excellent treatise on this subject: bentasker dot co dot uk/documentation/security/282-infiltrating-a-network-via-powerline-homeplugav-adapters As this treatise says at the end, TP-Link has released a firmware update to fix this issue, and that new items leaving the factory would not be affected. Users with affected devices can download the firmware update from tp-link dot com/en/. |
Question: | Can you add additional powerline devices to network |
Answer: | Of course you can but remember the speed its divided in the number of devices conected. your maximin badwith will allways be 500 mbps in the powerline network |
Question: | So this is a wifi repeater and it turns your electrical system into ethernet cable too |
Answer: | The TL-WPA4220 KIT allows you to expand your home's Ethernet connectivity using the existing electrical wiring within your walls, while also providing Wi-Fi signal broadcast at the Powerline Wi-Fi Adapter (TL-WPA4220) location. Simply plug the TL-PA4010 (smaller unit) into a wall outlet near your router and connect it to the router via Ethernet, then plug the TL-WPA4220 unit into a wall outlet at the desired location. Power line products in general, transmit data through the power line of your house. The power line rate is mainly decided by the quality of power line environment it’s operating in. When your power line rate is low, you may try the steps below to improve the quality of service.
Step 1:
Please check whether your powerline adapters are plugged directly into a wall outlet. If not, please move the adapters to an outlet on the wall.
Step 2:
Please check if there are electrical devices, which have a motor inside them, around the powerline adapters. Such equipment can be air-conditioners, washing-machines, electric-fans etc.. Please move such equipment to another location if possible, or move powerline adapters away from such equipment. You may also buy a surge protector and plug such equipments to its outlets to avoid any interference they may cause.
Step 3:
Please check if there are AC power adapters, such as those used for mobile phones, laptops or something else around the adapters. If the quality of AC power adapter is not good, it may cause noise on the power line circuit. Please move it to another place away from the powerline adapters.
Step 4:
Please check if the distance between the adapters is too long. In theory, the maximum distance is 300 meters. However, with interference and line quality, it will be hard to reach the full 300 meters.

User questions & answers
Question: | If I buy two of these kits will I have 1 sender and three receivers or 2 pairs |
Answer: | Keep in mind, the video on a product page misleads customers! You can't buy WiFi PL extender PLW1010 as they say in Video. If you buy two kits, you'll have - one powerline LAN distributor (non-wifi) - two WiFi extenders (each: PL receiver + Wifi broadcasting + 1 Ethernet Port) - one powerline receiver (non-wifi) you can plug to the power outlet and use as single Ethernet port |
Question: | Can someone tell me what this does |
Answer: | Depends on which version you refer to. The PLW1010 has WiFi capability, the PL1010 does not. They both have an ethernet port. The base unit is located near your router - use ethernet to connect the base unit to your router to get the best throughput from your router and into the house wiring. Plug it into an Electrical outlet and it sends your LAN signal through your house wiring to be picked up by the remote unit(s) plugged into wiring elsewhere in the house. The remote unit has an Ethernet port, so you can attach a Smart TV, BluRay, Game Console, whatever, to the ethernet and get pretty good network response (probably not gigabit, but pretty good anyway). With the Wifi Version (the PLW1010) the remote unit ALSO transmits WiFi signal. I have not purchased this WiFi product yet, I have a ethernet only version right now and looking at this to expand my iPhone/tablet Wifi signal in remote parts of the house). As such, I have an older house and the electrical wiring is sketchy and is rather noisy and fluctuates, but this technology seems to work nonetheless even on the other side of the house, I even have had the base unit plugged into an extension cord and it still works. So bottom line, this will extend your LAN signal to another room of the house via ethernet, and the WiFi version also creates a WiFi Access Point in that remote room. From what others say here, that Wifi is an extension of your router WiFi in SSID/pw. I hope this answers your question. |
Question: | Does this come with 2 units |
Answer: | Comes with 2 units. I was able to get a POE switch to work as well (get an unmanaged one for less complicated setup), and I added in multiple POE Cameras to it. Works great! |
Question: | Do you end up with a new network name or does it mirror your existing wi fi network (so you don't have to have devices switch networks |
Answer: | Most of the answers here are giving you bits and pieces. Here's the scoop from a long time network engineer and administrator. (BTW, I'm here because I'm buying another one for another client.) 1. The wired devices in this listing act as if you had a long Ethernet cable. It's transparent. Its a work of art. Much better than any mesh system 2. As far as the wireless, there are two options - The thing to remember is most devices (computers phones, tablets are fairly single minded when it comes to finding a better signal so if they can see the current access point at all they will hang on for dear life. You can turn off the wifi on the device and turn it back on and that will help it to reanalyze the situation. Business systems which have many of these monitor where devices are and will automatically kick a device off of one, forcing it to reanalyze the situation. a. Use the default setup - some people like this because then they can tell which antenna (access point) their device is connected. b. Duplicate the existing wifi network - This can be done using the WPS setup or manually. I like doing it manually so I can configure the whole setup (channel, channel width, security level, etc.) For the most part the handoff should work seamlessly however there may be times where certain devices (usually older ones) will refuse to change or take a while to make the switch. For most of my clients when I have to setup one of these, I duplicate the existing network to make it easier on them. I have yet to hear of any complaints. Two more details. For best performance of any of these devices 1. It MUST be plugged into the wall outlet, no power taps or surge protectors. They have filters which choke the communication 2. These normally wont work across a meter - in other words, you probably cant use it to share internet with your next door neighbor. There are a few instances where it works but they are few. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Is this compatible with 802.3af POE |
Answer: | Different technologies. Powerline works over you buildings electrical wires to transfer data. PoE uses your ethernet cable to transfer power to the device. Useful in places where there are no power outlets. With the these in mind, Comtrend runs with G.hn, which allows it to work with devices that run on electrical wire, coaxial cables, and POE. They do make PG-9172POE that is a bridge between powerline and POE |
Question: | Has anyone used this unit in a home built 70 to 100 years old |
Answer: | My house was built in 1951...not quite at the 70 year mark as you asked, but it works like a charm for me. Be sure you plug all units directly into the wall and not through a surge protector to get the best performance. |
Question: | Do these have to work in pairs? If I used three of these for devices, and the last connected to my switch, will that work |
Answer: | Two or more will work together. |
Question: | Do you have to be attached with a cat5 cable to the second unit or can it run through wifi |
Answer: | The initial setup has to have two Comtrend units. One is plugged into a household electrical outlet and a PC by Ethernet cabler, the second plugged into an electrical outlet and to the router or switch by ethernet cable. So the answer is yes. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Does this item come with one ethernet cable or two ethernet cables |
Answer: | It comes with 2 quality ethernet wires. |
Question: | whey will work if conect on different breakers |
Answer: | 50% chance. Most homes have 2 power lines and each breaker alternates power lines. If both breakers are on the same power line it will work. So one device on breaker #2 and the second on breaker #4 should work. Ditto for 1 and 3. If the two devices do not work you can have an electrician come in and "move" the breaker from one slot to another. Another solution is to have an electrician come in and install capacitors across the two lines. This is inexpensive and will allow the devices to work no matter what breaker you put it on. |
Question: | if i buy the adapter am i ordering 2 for one room and the other room |
Answer: | Yes, you get two adapters in the order. One plugs to the modem and the wall outlet, the other plugs to the router and the wall outlet. They even supply the cords you need for plugging into the modem and the router. That was a pleasant surprise. They are not super long, so if you need a longer cord you'll need to buy your own, but the one supplied was fine for my set up. On a side note, I just changed Internet providers and the modem was moved to a different room. I just moved the adapter to that new room, plugged it all up and it stayed paired. I didn't even need to redo that step. I'm very impressed with this product. Always be sure to plug this adapter directly to the wall and not a power strip. The modem plug can be on a power strip, just not the adapters themselves. |
Question: | Can you add other powerline devices to current network |
Answer: | Yes, you can add up to 6 devices |

User questions & answers
Question: | Are these two unit (transmitter and receiver) or one unit in |
Answer: | It's two parts yes. Works really good too. |
Question: | does this come with two devices? do all i have to do is plug in the device and then i can connect my computer with the ethernet cable |
Answer: | It comes with the 2 wall adapters that you need. you can then plug the adapter away from your router into an outlet near your desktop and plug the Ethernet cable in that way |
Question: | Can a switch be attached to the pc end of the connection to allow for two pc's to connect? can this be expanded by adding more individual units |
Answer: | Yes, you should be able to connect a switch to these adapters without issue. Keep in mind that while the switch prevents collisions these adapters work like a hub inside the power lines of your home. It is fine for two adapters regardless of how many devices are connected to either adapter but once you plug a third adapter in it becomes a collision domain and you can potentially take a small performance hit. This should not be noticeable though unless you have several of these adapters connected and using data at once. Basically when practical it is better to connect several devices to one adapter through a switch or wireless access point than to add a second power adapter. |
Question: | Can I use more than 2 units |
Answer: | These units work in pairs so if you configure them with two devices paired for 1 ethernet connection then yes. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Hello good night, if I need to put in 4 units in different bedrooms, would I need to buy 2 boxes of this same product? Greetings |
Answer: | There are 2 each, so yes |
Question: | Are these compatible with the Av600 units |
Answer: | Should be as they would all use the same protocols. |
Question: | Does the secondary unit always stay in energy saving money? I can't seem to keep it lit as if it was extending and my internet hasn't gotten any bette |
Answer: | Please describe what exactly you have tried so far. Often I can get understand the meaning of what is written, even with typos but in this case I need to know more. Where are the devices connected to power in relation to the WiFi router? What WiFi router is being used? How are the devices configured (all settings please)? What are all the settings on the WiFi router? Properly configured, the Ethernet traffic will be repeated using your power line, subject to certain caveats such as the signal not having to pass through a transformer. Try setting it up with all devices in the same room and on the same power circuit. Once that works try moving the “second” unit further and further away towards your preferred location. That being said, in my house, I don’t get anywhere near the rated transfer rate (under 100Mbps). Good luck. |
Question: | Will this work for voip phone system |
Answer: | It should. I have run game systems and servers through them. |

Question: | How does the speed of this compare to a wifi usb chip for a laptop |
Answer: | If the camera is wireless, then you need to connect it to your WiFi network. If it has an ethernet port, yes you should be able to connect it that way. |
Question: | If I purchase two pairs with the intention of using each pair with a different computer, will they interfere |
Answer: | No, not by my experience. (I had different model TRENDnet Powerline adapter.) OTOH: occasionally, high voltage appliances, such as microwave, can affect the bandwidth of the powerline adapters when they run. Connectivity was not lost, but throughput would occasionally be reduced when the appliance ran. |
Question: | I live in an older house. Do i have to have a 3prong outlet? Will a 3 to 2 prong converter work |
Answer: | You need modem with external router in order to us them |
Question: | can this work in hotel rooms if you don’t have access to the router or if they ask questions |
Answer: | TP-Link pass throughs and TRENDnet Powerline AV 500 are from different companies. TRENDnet Powerline AV 500 has some security features, passwords, and settings that we use. Such security features are unlikely to be compatible, but the TP-LINK AV500 2-Port Powerline Adapter with AC Pass Through Starter Kit looks like the same device from the same factory. Mixing devices is taking a big risk they won't be compatible because of security features, or the chips inside the devices. A worst situation is when mixing the similar adapters they don't stop helping each other, and they have no security features to stop intruders in your network. Now, I feel fear that some other company sells a device that an intruder on the outside of my home can use to get into my network, because that similar device hacks my passwords quickly by plugging it into the outlet. If you buy all the same devices, and use the security software in each of your computers, then you will have the security nearly equal to real networking wires. Having extra devices purchased in advance helps with growing networking like we have. Nothing obsolete happens unless you move to gigabit speed at 1000 megabytes per second. These are only 500 megabytes per sec. We have learned that nothing on the Internet is a gigabyte speed at all unless it has fiber optic cable, so why get it? |
