12 best d link modems

D-link modems are networking devices that play a crucial role in connecting your home or office to the internet. They fall under the category of modem router combos, which means they combine the functionality of a modem and a router into a single unit. Here's what you need to know about D-link modems:

  1. Modem and Router Combo: D-link modems are designed to serve as both a modem and a router. As a modem, they connect your network to your Internet Service Provider (ISP) and translate digital data from your ISP into a format that your devices can understand. As a router, they distribute this internet connection to multiple devices within your home or office via Wi-Fi or wired Ethernet connections.

  2. Wireless Connectivity: Many D-link modem router combos feature built-in Wi-Fi capabilities. This allows you to create a wireless network within your premises, enabling devices like smartphones, laptops, and tablets to connect to the internet without the need for additional hardware.

  3. Ethernet Ports: D-link modems often come equipped with Ethernet ports, typically labeled as LAN (Local Area Network) ports. These ports allow you to connect wired devices directly to the modem for a more stable and faster connection, which can be particularly useful for gaming consoles, desktop computers, and smart TVs.

  4. Security Features: D-link modems usually include security features to protect your network and devices from online threats. This may include firewall capabilities, WPA/WPA2 encryption for Wi-Fi networks, and the ability to set up guest networks for visitors without granting them access to your main network.

  5. Compatibility: It's important to ensure that your D-link modem is compatible with your specific ISP, as different ISPs may have varying requirements for modem/router compatibility. D-link often provides a list of supported ISPs and modem models on their website.

  6. Configuration and Management: D-link modems typically come with a web-based interface that allows you to configure and manage various settings. You can set up network names and passwords, manage connected devices, and configure advanced settings such as Quality of Service (QoS) to prioritize certain types of internet traffic.

  7. Firmware Updates: Like all networking devices, D-link modems should receive regular firmware updates to ensure security and performance improvements. Check for updates periodically to keep your device up-to-date.

  8. Customer Support: D-link offers customer support through their website, including user manuals, FAQs, and troubleshooting guides. In case of technical issues, you can contact their support for assistance.

D-link modems are a popular choice for many consumers due to their reliability and versatility in providing both modem and router functions in a single device. When choosing a D-link modem, it's essential to consider your specific internet needs, such as the speed of your internet plan and the number of connected devices, to select the right model that suits your requirements.

User questions & answers

Question: Why does it say 4x ethernet ports in your description where there is only one
Answer: Because Amazon hasn't corrected their product subscription. I submitted one two weeks ago and has yet to be done. If you need more than 1 ethernet port, then this one is not for you. This has only (1) 2.5 Multi-Gig port.
Question: Does netgear cm500-1aznas work with tds provider
Answer: Yes. But you need to call the TDS customer service and provide your CMAC or SN to register your device. These numbers are on the box and the unit
Question: Can you use a phone to ethernet splitter for voice to work
Answer: I have never heard of a phone to internet splitter, at least not expressed in those terms. However, for VOIP (which means Voice Over Internet Protocall), you must have at least one phone jack in a modem, or a modem-router combination. Some modems have two such jacks, which could provide two different "lines." Most importantly, you must have your internet service provider's PERMISSION to install and use such a modem, or modem-router combination! My own ISP (Wow, aka Wowway.com) REFUSED to give such permission because that would cut into their profits, since they would no longer receive a monthly FEE to RENT their age-old junk, much of which are at least five years old, which is like a millenia in this day of super-fast-paced electronic offerings. I had to send back every VOIP-capable modem I bought from Amazon and other places because my ISP REFUSED to enable them to work with their so-called service(s). Talk about anti-competitive business practices ... U.S. Federal Trade Commission (FTC), are you paying any attention?
Question: I understand that this modem says it will only work with xfinity. but has anyone tried this with spectrum? (aka time warner cable
Answer: Hello. I am writing this Dec 2, 2020 and just activated this modem 2 days ago with Spectrum. It is not on the list of approved modems, but oddly enough the CM400 is. I just told the tech support who activated it that it was compatible and it's worked fine with no problems. I went from 100-120 mbs on my 100 mb plan to 250 to 450 mbs, still on the 100 mb plan. This modem is not on the list of approved models but it seems to work fine so far without periodic latency/drops like the Arris model from Spectrum had.

User questions & answers

Question: Cm600-1aznas ($89.99) vs cm600-100nas ($109.99), what's the difference
Answer: 1aznas is an amazon sku, 100nas is the retail sku. Otherwise they are the same modem.
Question: Does this modem have a router built in
Answer: NETGEAR Gigabit Cable Modem 32x8 DOCSIS 3.1 Max speed 6 Gbps | For XFINITY by Comcast and Cox. Compatible with Gig-Speed from Xfinity (CM1000-1AZNAS) This model, nope, that's a no router model and the one Ethernet port is indicative of that. Netgear does not make any Cable Modems are dual units if there is only one Ethernet port, that's the point, no router, if there is a router, there's at least two ports. And the liars here, says up to 6 Gbps, with one single 1 Gbps port, that's a defined 1 Gbps port and there's only 1 so no bonding. Anything that connects to THIS cable modem will only ever, ever, ever be able to max 1 gb up or down, and we know you'll never see that speed but Cox Gigablast, yeah it's insanely fast. I just don't get why it 100 % is lying and does not ever, under any condition support a connection beyond 1 gb, obviously they are referring to what the cable (coax) is capable of doing per docsis 3.1 but that's misleading, that doesn't matter, it support whatever the slower port is, in this case, the limiting port is actually the Gigibit Ethernet port so that's the max speed 1 Gbps, please correct.
Question: Can the stand be removed
Answer: The stand on the CM1150V can easily be removed by removing one silver screw from the bottom of the unit. For this particular modem you need a Torx-8 screwdriver or equivalent. An earlier review, presumably for a different modem indicated a Torx-9 was required.
Question: Does this device increase the Internet Speed? Why i buy it
Answer: For someone to tell you, "yes"....really doesn't understand how the internet speeds work or do not understand your question. In basic terms....."No", this will NOT increase your internet speed that you subscribe too and pay for. You can't pay for a low internet speed and expect to get fast internet speeds because you bought a piece of equipment. The speeds do not work that way. HOWEVER.....using my current situation for example....I'm a time warner customer. I am paying for the 50 meg speed and I have an Arris 6141 modem. Time Warner just increased all their speeds for free so now I am able to get 300 meg speeds for the same price that I'm currently paying for ***BUT my Arris 6141 modem will only allow roughly 100 megs to get through to me...*** SO I am buying THIS modem because it allows all 300 megs to get through. The internet speed really isn't increased....it's still 300 megs, but by buying a different modem it allows the speed of what I'm paying for to get through. I hope this is a better explanation for you and others wondering about this topic. The answer can be more complicated because of how many "channels" a modem has, ect...but this is a simplistic answer. A modem with 24 downstream channels will allow more speed to get through than a modem with 8 or 16 channels. And a 32 channel will allow more speed to come through than a 24 channel. Allowing more speed to come through isn't the same as increasing the internet speed you have paid for. If that makes any sense.

User questions & answers

Question: Can I connect it to my computer for Ethernet connection
Answer: yes. It can if you have Internet service as part of your cable package
Question: Does this work with RCN cable/internet service
Answer: Only RCN can answer that question. I can say that this modem will handle at lease 110 Mbps because that was what I had. It did not handle 300Mbps. The modem worked perfectly and was very reliable.
Question: What kind of router is best to use with this modem
Answer: That is a very hard question to answer in a limited amount of space. First, think about getting the Model MG7310, which incorporates an N300 wireless router. You will probably save some money and you will reduce cable clutter, increase reliability (wiring connections are a frequent source of trouble) and save desk space by incorporating both modem and router in a single device. If the MG7310 won't work for you, here are some very general rules, but the choice of a router is definitely an individual decision that has to factor in price and performance. If you are in a dense setting like a high rise building or a dense condo or apartment complex, get a dual band wireless that has both 2.4 GHz and 5 GHZ frequency support. But that assumes your connecting devices like phones and computers support 5 GHz. If you live in a very large house, or a house with masonry walls rather than sheetrock, you will want WDS support in case you need to use a range extender. With that said, if you have a 50 Mbps cable service or slower, an N300 router will probably meet your needs and save you some money. Much more could be written on this topic, a search of the Internet should provide additional information.
Question: Do I need to contact my cable provider that I am changing my previse cable modem for this one, or will it work out of the box
Answer: Short version: Use your provider's self registration website, or whichever of their customer service methods work best for you. Long version: The cable modem will go online once powered and connected to a coaxial cable with good signal parameters. You still need service authorization from the cable modem termination system. Some cable internet service providers have self registration websites. Connect the coaxial cable to the modem, an ethernet cable to a computer, and connect the power cord to an outlet. This may also work over a wireless router and with wireless devices, but just using a computer can help isolate any setup issues. When your modem first goes online, the CMTS may recognize a foreign modem and direct your web browser to the registration website. If not, the registration website can be manually searched for, which is where a secondary internet connection of some sort can come in handy. If you have your account information already, the only other thing you may need to add is the CMAC, or Cable modem Media Access Control address. Some registration systems can detect this automatically. This is the number that distinguishes your modem from all of the others, and should be on the modem if not also on a label in the box. At the end of the process, the modem will probably restart on command of the CMTS. Once it is back online, test your internet connection. You may need to power cycle the modem (unplug it and plug it back in) or reset it (hold the reset button for long enough) before using it with other equipment, most commonly a wireless router. This particular product is just a modem, so if you previously used the wireless network coming out of the cable company's equipment, you would also need your own wireless router or other networking equipment. This whole process can often be done ahead of time and the new modem plugged in later, but be advised that the previous modem (if it is still online) will lose its service. Also be aware that if the wiring leading to an old modem has issues, changing modems will not fix the real issue and is not likely to make the service any better.

User questions & answers

Question: How is this model different than the arris surfboard sb
Answer: The sb6121 only has speeds of 172 Mbps download and up to 131 Mbps upload. This model has up to 343 Mbps download and 131 Mbps upload.
Question: Going with the cable modem option what’s the best router to pair this with for spectrum
Answer: It depends on your needs. Needs are based on the number of devices connected and the size of area you are trying to cover. I would highly recommend a mesh network unless your home is 1200sqft or smaller. A centrally located router could cover that. The biggest problem is getting the 5ghz frequency to reach throughout the home. The 5ghz gives you speeds over 30mbps on wireless devices. 5ghz will reach roughly 40ft in all directions from your access point (ap). A mesh system gives you multiple ap and thus more area covered by the 5ghz.
Question: How many devices can connect at once? Is that that the 8x refers to
Answer: The 8x doesn't refer to the number of devices you can connect to it. You only want to connect one device and that's your WiFi router. You wireless router determines how many devices can be connect based on the available number of ip addresses on the wireless device. The 8x refers to the speed of Data Over Cable Service Interface Specification (DOCSIS). Its informing you on the speed of DOCSIS 2.0 vs the newer DOCSIS 3.0. Ultimately your speed will be determined by how much you want to pay your internet provider. And you can determine how many devices you want to connect by the router you choose.
Question: Do I also have to buy a router for the modem? And to make sure it obviously speeds up internet connection right
Answer: If you only need to have one computer hooked up to the internet you do not need a router. If you want to hook up more than one computer or if you want a wireless network, you will need to buy the appropriate router. My internet speed went from 20mb to 100mb(the speed I pay extra for). TWC has also stopped charging me $8.00 a month for the use of their inadequate equipment.

User questions & answers

Question: Confirming that only one device can be connected to the modem, despite additional lan ports? you can't connect, say your pc and a router at same time
Answer: The MB8600 will allow for one device. You can connect your PC to the MB8600, or connect a router to the MB8600.If, in the very unusual situation, you are paying for and receiving more than one IP address from your provider, then you can directly connect up to 4 devices to the MB8600.
Question: I also need wifi, what do you recommend
Answer: The MB8600 modem will work with any WiFi router. Given the speed of the MB8600, you should be using at least an AC1900 router and given the other devices in your network, you might be able to take advantage of a wireless speed even faster than AC1900.The Ethernet port on the MB8600 simply plugs into the WiFi router of your choice. The router should be current enough to have a Gigabit WAN port (10/100/1000 Ethernet port), since you will need that for the speeds that the MB8600 can deliver. And for now, 1 Gbps service is the fastest cable service Comcast is providing in the US. When Comcast or other cable Internet service providers begin providing service speeds over 1Gbps, the MB8600 has the bonded Ethernet ports which will allow the MB8600 to deliver speeds above 1 Gbps. We are not aware of a consumer-home/small office router that does Ethernet port bonding today, but they are coming. Ethernet port bonding is available on Enterprise level routers (routers used in large organizations), but we can't recommend that class of product for a consumer at this point. They are more complicated than you need and more expensive. Bonded Ethernet ports for consumers will appear by the time Comcast is ready to begin delivering speeds above 1Gbps and the MB8600 will be ready to deliver those speeds. In summary: Use at least an AC1900 wireless router Be sure the router you choose has a Gigabit Ethernet WAN port.
Question: Does this use the now-notorious Intel Puma 6 chipset
Answer: Model MB8600 and all Motorola products use Broadcom chipsets and do not have the problem associated with the Puma 6 chipset.
Question: Do all four Ethernet ports on this modem output the same amount of bandwidth or are there only certain ports that operate at maximum capacity
Answer: The reason for four ports on a modem requires some explanation. It is important to understand the MB8600 does not do routing. The MB8600 is a modem only. A router can be connected to any of the MB8600 GigE ports. The link between the router and the modem is then capable of using the full rate of the one Gbps service Comcast currently can provide with their new DOCSIS 3.1 service. In the future, Comcast and other cable services are expected to offer services faster than on 1 Gbps. When those faster services are offered, the additional ports in the MB8600 will be needed. Ports 1 and 2 can be bonded to allow up to 2 Gbps to be delivered by the MB8600. The other two ports on the MB8600 are there to allow additional port bonding for speeds over 2 Gbps. When Comcast has service speeds over 1 Gbps, the router connected to the MB8600 also needs to do port bonding to take advantage of the port bonding in the MB8600. Routers used by consumers today do not support port bonding. Some routers used in corporate networks do support port bonding. In the future, routers used in homes and small businesses will be sold that support port bonding so they can take advantage of future service speeds that will be faster than 1Gbps. In summary, the four ports on the MB8600 are there to allow the MB8600 to deliver service speeds above 1 Gbps WHEN THOSE SERVICES ARE AVAILABLE. That is good design. Think twice before you buy a modem that pretends to offer speeds above 1Gbps and does not have multiple ports that can be bonded. You can not get a speed above 1 Gbps unless you have a way to get the fast speed out of the modem. The MB8600 is designed to allow speeds above 1 Gbps to be delivered to a router with bonded GigE ports. Other modems are not as well designed.

User questions & answers

Question: Is this both a modem and router ? (2 in1 thing
Answer: Yes it is! It has dual functionality. If you have a router you like already you can turn the wifi part off and just use it as a modem
Question: This says it isn't compatible with at&t, does that mean my iphone, with an at&t connection, will not be able to use this modem
Answer: It is not compatible with AT&T High Speed Internet service, only good with traditional Cable Service. Your iPhone will connect to the Wi-Fi without issue.
Question: i'm using this with netgear router (with port forwarding). therefore i have to run this modem in bridge mode. would i be better with a cheaper modem
Answer: I think you'd be better with a cheaper modem. The whole point of getting this modem is so you don't need to purchase a separate router/Wi-Fi access point.
Question: I was reading that you cannot run the lan jack and wifi at the same time on this device, is that true? Has anyone else experienced this problem
Answer: Yes, you can use LAN and wifi the same time.

User questions & answers

Question: What is the difference between this modem, the SB6183, and the SB
Answer: The SB6180 enables channel bonding of up to 8 downstream channels and 4 upstream channels, which allows an operator to offer their customers advanced multimedia services with data rates of well over 300 Mbps in DOCSIS mode and 400 Mbps in EuroDOCSIS mode for downstream and 120 Mbps upstream. The SB6183 has 16 download & 4 upload channels. Download speeds up to 686 Mbps and upload speeds up to 131 Mbps based on your Cable provider service. That is the main difference I could find. I hope it helps.
Question: do most users need such a fast cable modem? I have comcast performance....is this over kill or futureproofing with docis 3.1 on horizaen
Answer: DOCSIS 3.1 is here, true. And the first set of cable modems using the standard will offer some improvements. As with many technologies, they don't saturate the market overnight. In most cases the availability and maturity of a technology in the marketplace can take years - as much as 3 to 5 years. Even if 15 to 20 percent of the market goes to DOCSIS 3.1 in the first or second year, that says 80 percent hasn't. Future proofing your technology is nice, but a measure of sensibility should be used too. I went to the ARRIS SB6183 knowing that my ISP service is 200 Mbps. It allows a considerable cushion for growth. If my ISP's average speeds jumped to 500 Mbps, and I were to consider another cable modem upgrade, I would focus on a faster cable modem that uses the DOCSIS 3.1 standard or any newer and more powerful standard - allowing me to benefit from the latest standards and speeds. The DOCSIS 3.0 standard may well be nearing its End-of-Life in 2 to 3 years. Therefore, I would see no value going to a 1.4 Gbps DOCSIS 3.0 modem.
Question: Does ARRIS/Motorola support firmware upgrades for the 6183 via downloads to the consumer's computer
Answer: The Cable Operators (MSOs) have complete control of what cable modem/gateway hardware they will allow installed and the firmware it uses, on their cable plant. This means anything directly connected to the cable plant (COAX) in your house. They do this to ensure that nothing happens to anyone upstream from your connections. Cable Operators follow the DOCSIS Specifications that control this methodology of firmware upgrades as well as providing security for the firmware upgrades. Cable Operators also run both the products and firmware through their own test cycles to approve any manufacturers' modems, wireless gateways, and the associated firmware updates for deployment. This is not an ARRIS only implementation, but the required implementation of any cable device manufacturer. After an MSO has tested and approved a new version of firmware for a cable device, they will then "push" that new firmware out to the devices. So upgrades to the modem firmware will be made automatically but you cannot download them to your computer and perform the upgrade yourself.
Question: I purchased this item almost 8 weeks ago 8 August 2014 will i receive this item in my lifetime or will i need to leave this item in my will for my kid
Answer: Purchased SB6183 a week ago, My invoice says estimated shipping between Oct 1 to 10th. What was your estimate date? If i don't see any update by Oct5th i'm going to cancel my order and stick with SB6141.
