User questions & answers
Question: | What is the difference between this modem, the SB6183, and the SB |
Answer: | The SB6180 enables channel bonding of up to 8 downstream channels and 4 upstream channels, which allows an operator to offer their customers advanced multimedia services with data rates of well over 300 Mbps in DOCSIS mode and 400 Mbps in EuroDOCSIS mode for downstream and 120 Mbps upstream. The SB6183 has 16 download & 4 upload channels. Download speeds up to 686 Mbps and upload speeds up to 131 Mbps based on your Cable provider service. That is the main difference I could find. I hope it helps. |
Question: | do most users need such a fast cable modem? I have comcast performance....is this over kill or futureproofing with docis 3.1 on horizaen |
Answer: | DOCSIS 3.1 is here, true. And the first set of cable modems using the standard will offer some improvements. As with many technologies, they don't saturate the market overnight. In most cases the availability and maturity of a technology in the marketplace can take years - as much as 3 to 5 years. Even if 15 to 20 percent of the market goes to DOCSIS 3.1 in the first or second year, that says 80 percent hasn't. Future proofing your technology is nice, but a measure of sensibility should be used too. I went to the ARRIS SB6183 knowing that my ISP service is 200 Mbps. It allows a considerable cushion for growth. If my ISP's average speeds jumped to 500 Mbps, and I were to consider another cable modem upgrade, I would focus on a faster cable modem that uses the DOCSIS 3.1 standard or any newer and more powerful standard - allowing me to benefit from the latest standards and speeds. The DOCSIS 3.0 standard may well be nearing its End-of-Life in 2 to 3 years. Therefore, I would see no value going to a 1.4 Gbps DOCSIS 3.0 modem. |
Question: | Does ARRIS/Motorola support firmware upgrades for the 6183 via downloads to the consumer's computer |
Answer: | The Cable Operators (MSOs) have complete control of what cable modem/gateway hardware they will allow installed and the firmware it uses, on their cable plant. This means anything directly connected to the cable plant (COAX) in your house. They do this to ensure that nothing happens to anyone upstream from your connections. Cable Operators follow the DOCSIS Specifications that control this methodology of firmware upgrades as well as providing security for the firmware upgrades. Cable Operators also run both the products and firmware through their own test cycles to approve any manufacturers' modems, wireless gateways, and the associated firmware updates for deployment. This is not an ARRIS only implementation, but the required implementation of any cable device manufacturer. After an MSO has tested and approved a new version of firmware for a cable device, they will then "push" that new firmware out to the devices. So upgrades to the modem firmware will be made automatically but you cannot download them to your computer and perform the upgrade yourself. |
Question: | I purchased this item almost 8 weeks ago 8 August 2014 will i receive this item in my lifetime or will i need to leave this item in my will for my kid |
Answer: | Purchased SB6183 a week ago, My invoice says estimated shipping between Oct 1 to 10th. What was your estimate date? If i don't see any update by Oct5th i'm going to cancel my order and stick with SB6141. |

User questions & answers
Question: | How is this model different than the arris surfboard sb |
Answer: | Yes it is a ADSL2+ Modem/Router combo. For Wireless networking it was useless. I even changed to a higher gain antenna combination. I used if for two weeks then got rid of it. I've tried 6 different Modem/Router Combo's over the last year. My service Provider, CenturyLink will not replace a broken Modem/Router. They make you lease one from them. Their equipment has normally been CRAP as far as performance and networking distance. I have been using a TP-LINK TD-W8970 for the past two month's 24/7 without any problems and it has a superior range to any of the others I've tried in the past. I have 6 computers on my home network with the farthest one being located in a small workshop in the back yard approx. 250ft from the TP-Link Modem/Router which is located in a separate room in the house. The three antenna's really make a difference. If you require a dual band modem/router TP-Link has one also, but I only needed a single band one. Hope this helps. |
Question: | Going with the cable modem option what’s the best router to pair this with for spectrum |
Answer: | The Zoom Modem/Router comes with a line-splitter which plugs into the phone line wall outlet. The router plugs into one side of the splitter and your phone plugs into the other side. This is standard for all DSL internet line internet services. |
Question: | How many devices can connect at once? Is that that the 8x refers to |
Answer: | Yes, you absolutely can. You can use any device that has a built in web browser and the GUI is fully functional. Here is a link for the ASUS RT-AC3200 setup video. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y8HjIJf7joY |
Question: | Do I also have to buy a router for the modem? And to make sure it obviously speeds up internet connection right |
Answer: | The number of devices depends on how they are connected and what they are doing. Wired devices only use the router's CPU as they pass traffic, wireless devices use the CPU and radio recourses. This router has a pretty powerful CPU, so I would expect it to handle wired devices well (having said that, it designed for home/small business use so there could be unknown limitations in the software). Radio is tricky to predict because there are so many unknown factors. I would not plan to have more than about 15 active wireless devices on this kind of router, but it can probably maintain a connection to a greater number of devices if they are mostly idle and well divided between the 3 bands. It also depends on what kind of data the devices use. If it is basic webpages without a lot of graphics and video, then you can have more devices than if they used a lot of bandwidth. |

Question: | Will this support xfinity extreme 1200mbps ? it's not on the supported device list |

User questions & answers
Question: | What’s the WiFi range on the sbg |
Answer: | In a house it tends to be sufficient. My security cameras run without issue 40-50 feet away. Range drops off outside the house after about 15 feet. So a 60-70 foot radius from the router, then I tend to jump to a neighbors xfinitwifi as a backup outside |
Question: | does this have a phone jack |
Answer: | No phone jack. Mine has 3 ports 1. Power, 2. Incoming Cable, and 3. Outgoing ethernet. |
Question: | will this work with WOW |
Answer: | This will work with WOW for everything but their 1 Gb service tier. |
Question: | Can you turn off the Mcaffee crap? Has anyone noticed this router not allowing you to visit sites it thinks are “dangerous |
Answer: | As OP said I never installed, so nothing to turn off. I started having many problems using a non standard gate way address (192.168.10.1). Router would forget WiFi password, couldn’t access the GUI there. Almost as though the firmware was becoming corrupted. I sent mine back, waiting for replacement - that’s another story. |

User questions & answers
Question: | It seems impossible to connect a display via usb-c. use thunderbolt usb-c for video, then you can't charge the macbook air. why |
Answer: | The SBG7600AC2 USB 2.0 port supports connected hard drives with SAMBA and DLNA Media Sharing. In addition to supporting USB 2.0 hard drives, the USB port can be used as a charging connection for mobile devices. Note that the USB port does NOT support Internet connection. |
Question: | Received today and it is not new. already unwrapped. how do i return to get a new one, like i ordered? or get discount for receiving an open box item |
Answer: | Contact Amazon for return and replacement. |
Question: | Has anyone noticed their wifi will cut out randomly with this product throughout the day |
Answer: | Yes, this is happening increasingly. I bought about 3 months ago. The problem started maybe a couple of weeks later. Now, it’s multiple time, every day. The provider company says they can’t fix. Arris said I was only getting 1 upstream channel, instead of 3. And that was the cause of the intermittent WiFi. You can check your status by typing 192.168.100.1 in browser. Scroll down past your downstream list to see your upstream list. Each line represents a channel. An Arris rep also told me to ask for a ‘tier 1 supervisor’ at the internet provider company. Otherwise, they won’t know how to assist you. That’s where I’m at now. They’re sending a tech out to check everything. I’m just not sure they can fix my upstream problem. We shall see. |
Question: | It's impossible to get a true perspective of this modem/router because the reviews and questions are for many Arris products. How is this possible |
Answer: | I have Optimum as my ISP and my Arris modems have been very reliable. I had an Arris TM822A that worked perfectly since 2013. I wanted to stop leasing so I purchased the Arris SB6183 as an upgrade and it is working fine for the last 2 weeks. I would only buy one of two Arris. The SB6183 (16x4) or the SB8200 (32x8). I would not buy the Arris SB6190 /TM602/TM1672) or anything with a Puma 6 chipset. The Puma 6 chipset from Intel has a defect that firmware has still not fixed. You can google that chipset to see the issues with latency. If the Arris works with your cable company, I don't see an issue buying one of the two mentioned. BTW, the two are modems only, no router or telephone connection. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Does anyone know if "Bridge Mode" is supported |
Answer: | Not sure if it's supported, per-say, however you are able to enable bridge mode on the device's interface. This disables both wireless radios and essentially gives you a pass through network connection to whatever you connect to it. |
Question: | How come the price is almost $20 higher when I put this item in my cart? Price jumped to |
Answer: | Price changes every time. Many times they only have a couple and when they are sold it jumps to the next seller. It's happened to me many times. |
Question: | Does this device still broadcast the the hidden and/or unhidden "public xfinity wifi" ssid |
Answer: | The xfinity wifi does not appear anymore since I switched to this modem. I also disabled the modems Wi-Fi in favor of a better Wi-Fi router. |
Question: | Is this arris surfboard svg2482ac sold by amazon carried the intel logo on the modem as the picture shown |
Answer: | this modem has the flawed Intel Puma 6 chipset which causes problems with streaming video and gaming. Arris knew of this problem as far back as 2015 yet they still released this piece of junk new in 2017. Avoid at all costs if you plan to use this for gaming or video streaming, it is not reliable. |
