14 best ethernet port for desktop

An Ethernet port for a desktop computer, also known as a network port or RJ45 port, is a hardware interface that allows a desktop computer to connect to a wired Ethernet network. Here's what you need to know about Ethernet ports for desktops:

  1. Physical Interface: An Ethernet port typically looks like a rectangular socket with a small tab on one side. It is designed to accept an Ethernet cable with an RJ45 connector, which is the standard connector for Ethernet cables.

  2. Wired Network Connection: Ethernet ports provide a wired network connection for your desktop computer. This type of connection is known for its stability and reliability, making it a preferred choice for tasks that require a consistent and fast internet connection, such as online gaming, video streaming, and large file transfers.

  3. Speed and Compatibility: Ethernet ports on desktop computers can support different speeds, including 10/100 Mbps (Fast Ethernet), 1 Gbps (Gigabit Ethernet), and even 10 Gbps (10 Gigabit Ethernet). The actual speed depends on both the port and the network infrastructure.

  4. Integrated or Expansion Cards: Desktop computers can have Ethernet ports integrated into the motherboard or as separate expansion cards. Integrated ports are more common in modern computers, while older systems or specialized setups may require the installation of a dedicated Ethernet card.

  5. Plug-and-Play: Ethernet ports are generally plug-and-play, meaning you can connect an Ethernet cable to the port, and it should work without needing additional software installation in most cases. However, you may need to install drivers for certain network adapters or cards.

  6. Networking Hubs and Switches: Ethernet ports on desktops are typically used to connect to networking hubs, switches, or routers. These devices distribute the network connection to multiple devices within a local area network (LAN).

  7. Security: Wired Ethernet connections are generally considered more secure than Wi-Fi connections since they are harder to intercept from a distance. This can be an advantage for users concerned about network security.

  8. Cable Management: When setting up your desktop computer, consider cable management to keep Ethernet cables organized and prevent tripping hazards. Cable clips and cable sleeves can help tidy up your workspace.

  9. Networking Products: Ethernet ports are part of a broader range of networking products, including Ethernet cables, routers, switches, and network adapters. Ensuring compatibility and quality across your network components is essential for optimal performance.

In summary, Ethernet ports are essential for desktop computers to connect to wired networks, offering reliable and high-speed internet access. They come in various speeds and are a key component of networking products for home and office environments.

User questions & answers

Question: Does it work with windows
Answer: Yes sir. It will definitely work with Windows 7 32/64 bit like what I have done with the unit I bought previously. It will be detected automatically by Windows 7 at once if properly installed. Remember to disable the onboard before installing the card. Meaning, when you install it, make sure the computer is unplug. I have been using it for almost 6 months now and it works good.
Question: An old question, but is the low profile bracket still included
Answer: Low profile bracket is included in the one I'm selling - see description. Doc's Books.
Question: Does this device work with ubuntu linux out of the box or do I need to manually compile the driver? Or other distros
Answer: I'm using it on Linux Mint Mate 18.3. The r-8169 driver that wants to load drove me nuts, it worked but researching showed many problems with Realtek r-8169 driver. I'm looking for a stable Plex Server and in the end compiled my driver own using info from https://unixblogger.com/2016/08/11/how-to-get-your-realtek-rtl8111rtl8168-working-updated-guide/ I downloaded current Realtek r8168 driver and compiled with info from there. Be aware the r-8169 driver will need to be Blacklisted all info is there if you have the nerve. I'm getting a steady file share speeds around 87mB/s to 92mB/s from Windows 10 to Linux Mint Mate 18.3 Plex Server when uploading media.
Question: Windows 10 compatable
Answer: Yes, the TG-3468 is compatible with Windows 10. Please download the latest driver from our website for best results: https://www.tp-link.com/us/support/download/tg-3468/#Driver Regards, TP-Link Support

User questions & answers

Question: What port would you plug the lan cable coming from the router into on the 24 port gigaswitch
Answer: It should work fine. Keep in mind this is a gigabit switch and cat8 would more typically be used for 10gb networking but its all compatible.
Question: Is this model wall-mountable? Does it have the little "screw-guides" to hang it on the wall
Answer: Your configuration should look like this: (Internet) Cable -> ARRIS TG1672G -> Port 1, 2, 3, or 4 -> Netgear 8-Port Switch Your Cable Modem provides 4 Gigabit Ethernet Ports and when you connect the Netgear 8-Port switch you lose 2 ports (one on the cable modem & one on the Netgear and end up with 10 Gigabit Ethernet Ports instead of 4. No configuration is needed. If one of the devices you're adding is a Wi-Fi router, then your configuration will look like this: (Internet) Cable -> ARRIS TG1672G -> Port 1 -> Wi-Fi Router -> Netgear 8-Port Switch. If you want all devices to be able to see each other, then you can have up to 7 of them plugged into the Netgear Router.
Question: what is the difference between the smart switch and the unmanaged switch
Answer: No. It's top speed is Gigabit (1000 Mbps), but it will work with 10/100 Mbps devices well. It's not just limited to Internet but any devices that wish to communicate with each other i.e. computer to Network Attached Storage (NAS) device, etc ... and usually those devices have gigabit Ethernet ports so they can communicate with each other at the gigabit speeds.
Question: Does this have a web GUI or do I have to use the TP-Link software for configuration
Answer: Make your flow as follows: Modem -> Wi-Fi Router -> Netgear 16-Port Gigabit Ethernet Switch. All your devices (up to 15 of them) will get their IP address from the Wi-Fi Router. You may also want to consider labeling your cables. I have two 16-port switches, one Unmanaged (for Internet) and one Managed (for private network), and all the cables are both color-coded and labeled.

User questions & answers

Question: Can I use this as 1 fiber uplink to data center then the other 3 fiber ports to different buildings and the copper to connect to another switch
Answer: I suggest that you enter to the web full site of Neutrogena, and in the section of cosmetics in the part below you select "find you perfect shade". There you have to indicate your skin tone and others stuffs for find the shade you need. In order to have the acne treatment in the results you should choose in the options always that you are looking for an anti acne product. Sorry for my English...
Question: Can i use regular cat7 rj45 cables in the sfp+ to achieve 10gbe speeds, or do i need to use a different cable
Answer: This is good to wear in the warmer months since it is very light on skin... I’m fair and the shade I use balances well... and being that it is a tiny and not a full coverage product you can increase or decrease the amount applied to match tone and color
Question: Anyone try connecting a 10g RJ45 transceiver in one of these sfp ports? I'd love to convert 10g fiber to 10g copper ethernet
Answer: It feels like any other make I have used. It is just more hydrating. Goes on smooth. It is not a matte finish.
Question: Can you run the ethernet port to another switch or is it strictly for management purposes
Answer: No, I found that other products and our humid weather makes my skin more oily. Use oil absorbing sheets. That will help with the greasy look. I'm 63 and still have an oily look if I don't work at it.

User questions & answers

Question: If I connect this product to a gigabit router using a category 6 cable, what speed (wired and wireless) can I expect to get
Answer: 1. You have to program the AC1200 using the admin account to act as an access point. Connect your pc directly to the AC1200. Turn the AC1200 on before you turn on your pc so that your pc gets a tcpip (internet) address that is compatible with the AC1200. 2. Login to the AC1200 with the admin account. Use your web brouser to get to the admin account. The default web address is usually 192.168.0.1 3. You have to disable the dhcp function on the AC1200. The Xfinity router needs to be the only device to assign dhcp addresses. If you don't disable the AC1200 from assigning dhcp addresses it will create a subnetwork that is separate from the Xfinity network using a different address range. (Usually starting with 192.168.000.002 to 192.168.000.255). 4. Setup any security settings and network names before you enable the access point mode. 5. Save your new settings and write down any passwords that you may have changed. 6. I also usually put a static IP address in the access point that is in the range of the Xfinity router. That way you can gain accesss to the AC1200 later because you know its address. 7. Plug in an ethernet cable from the Xfinity router to one of the 4 lan outputs of the AC1200. It might also work if you use the wan port (yellow connector) if Netgear updated their software. If you use one of the 4 outputs it guarantees that the access point will be part of the existing Xfinity network.
Question: I don't see a wan port on this ac, it doesn't have one
Answer: A WAP or Wireless Access Point is different than a "repeater or WiFi extender". The primary function of this device is to plug a Cat 5/5e/6 cable into one of the ports. It connects by "hardwire" to your network first, then broadcast the WiFi signal. A WiFi Extender/repeater on the other hand connects by wireless to another wireless access point. You must determine "where" you want to connect first. The "range" will determine the antenna selection. See this graphic: https://www.google.com/search?q=db1+antenna+Wifi&espv=2&biw=1013&bih=426&source=lnms&tbm=isch&sa=X&ved=0ahUKEwinx8uL4fvRAhXFhlQKHYinCK4Q_AUIBygC#tbm=isch&q=db1+antenna+Wifi+range+images&imgrc=lV_VC2Rf01X2XM:
Question: How do I get this to work as an access point with my Xfinity gateway/modem/router? It's connecting but no internet
Answer: Hi, thanks for your question. The salt is a product of Turkey. Thank you.
Question: Can this set up.as a repeater (wifi extender
Answer: No the grinder is not refillable sorry.

User questions & answers

Question: I am using cat 8 cables. Will this product work? If not what other switch do i need
Answer: It should work fine. Keep in mind this is a gigabit switch and cat8 would more typically be used for 10gb networking but its all compatible.
Question: Should this connect to arris tg1672g without any configuration on either side? the arris combines "..a 4-port gigabit router.." not working for me
Answer: Your configuration should look like this: (Internet) Cable -> ARRIS TG1672G -> Port 1, 2, 3, or 4 -> Netgear 8-Port Switch Your Cable Modem provides 4 Gigabit Ethernet Ports and when you connect the Netgear 8-Port switch you lose 2 ports (one on the cable modem & one on the Netgear and end up with 10 Gigabit Ethernet Ports instead of 4.
Question: Do i have to have 1gig internet speed to have this or no
Question: how to get plug and play to work? 14 ports not putting out IP, have modem and wifi router connected, but cant get other ports to work
Answer: Make your flow as follows: Modem -> Wi-Fi Router -> Netgear 16-Port Gigabit Ethernet Switch.

Question: What is the actual dimension of the 16-port switch? The dimension in production information is the size of shipping box
Answer: 11.3 × 4.4 × 1.0 in as found on the manufacturer's site https://www.tp-link.com/us/home-networking/16-port-switch/tl-sg116/
Question: Do i still need to use a poe injector to each camera if i have this switch
Answer: As the other answers point out, you can use the 4 POE ports for a camera. Some cheap injectors are dangerous for your equipment. Be sure the injector implements the IEEE 802.3af or 802.3at standard, and then you'll be safe.
Question: what do i need to daisy chain three of these with fiber
Answer: without knowing the distance between switches, you would need to research if you need single mode SFPs, or if multi-mode, either short or long range will do. Depending on the SFPs, you would then need the proper cable as each has it's own requirement. multi-mode I would recommend OM3. Single mode requires it's own single mode duplex type cable.
Question: is this a managed switch
Answer: No, it is what TP-Link calls a SMART switch. There is L2/L3 managed Switch, Smart Switch, Easy Smart Switch and Unmanaged Switch in TP-Link official website, this article will give a brief account about the features and application scenarios of the respective switch. Unmanaged SwitchYou are not able to configure the unmanaged switch because it doesn’t support any configuration interface or options. It is plug-and-play, so you only need to connect your computer or other network devices to the unmanaged switch directly. Therefore, if you do not need any L2 features, but only need to extend the number of Ethernet ports, unmanaged switch is the right switch for you. Easy Smart SwitchYou can use Utility or Web interface (Web only for TL-SG1016DE and TL-SG1024DE) to manage easy smart switch and configure basic settings, such as VLAN, QoS and a few L2 features like LAG, IGMP Snooping and Port Mirroring. If there are no advanced applications needed, easy smart switch should be the best choice for you. Normally, easy smart switch will be found in the home, SOHO or small business. Smart SwitchSmart switch can be managed by Web interface, Telnet, SSH and SNMP. It supports far more L2 features and better QoS than easy smart switch, additionally, smart switch supports more advanced functions like ACL and Spanning Tree protocol, if you want to support a solution for one small company or colleague with a lower price, the Smart switch is the indispensable device. L2 Managed SwitchL2 managed switch has a console port for CLI (Command Line Interface), it has all the managing ways and advanced features that smart switch has, besides, L2 managed switch has abundant VLAN and Multicast features as well as cluster for logical stacking and Network Security features including 802.1X and IP-MAC binding. So you can use L2 managed switch to build a resiliency and availability network or even build up a small ISP Access Network. L3 Managed SwitchL2 switch could only work in Layer 2--Data Link Layer of OSI model. But Layer 3 switch has some L3 functions just like a traditional router--static routing, routing protocol like OSPF and ECMP, multicast routing protocol and DHCP relay.Compared with a traditional router, L3 switch has lower cost but better performance in packet routing speed because the layer 3 switch routes packets by its hardware--ASIC instead of CPU, once it learned the IP address, it will forward packets by switching performance. It is mainly used in the core layer of a middle sized business network, providing better hardware switching performance in routing.

Product features

Power over Ethernet

4 of the 8 Auto-Negotiation RJ45 ports of the switch support power over ethernet (PoE) function. These PoE ports support power up to 55W and they can automatically detect and supply power with those IEEE 802.3af compliant powered devices(PDs).

Power Overload Protection

When total power consumption exceeds 55W, the intelligent power management will cut the lower priority port power off to ensure the high priority port's power supply and protect the device from power overload operation.
