Answer:	I love my Bogs! Nothing really works on ice except some form of Yaktrax with metal grippers . They slip on and off and shoe or boot. I work at a barn and when it is icy, sure, I can "shuffle" along on my Bogs, but in order to truly be able to "walk" you need buy some Trax!the sole is neither hard or soft. Answer:	There is a narrow zipper pocket in the middle that divides the bag in half. There is also a padded area for laptops as well as a small pocket on the side with slots for pens. Depending on how many books you have, this may not be the bag for you. It is very narrow. My bag fits my laptop in a sleeve, my planner, a folder of work documents and thats about it. But it is a beautiful bag.
