User questions & answers

Question: Is this drive smr if so i don't want it
Answer: No, it’s not. All Ironwolf and Itonwolf pro drives are SMR free, according to Seagate
Question: Does any one know a case where 3 could fit inside
Answer: I have 3 of these in a Synology 4 bay NAS DiskStation DS918+ works great!
Question: I purchased (2) 12-tb: anyone knows why i get 10.91-tb for each? why are we short
Answer: manufacturer considers 1 Megabyte to be 1000 Kilobytes, 1 Gigabyte to be 1000 Megabytes, 1 Terabyte to be 1000 Gigabytes and so on. This is correct considering that kilo means 1000 and mega means 1000000 (10^6). However, computers calculate on base 2 and to them, 1 MB is actually 1024 kilobytes, 1GB is 1024MB and 1 TB is 1024GB. This difference in the method of computation is responsible for this "missing space." Let's take an example of a 500 GB hard disk. From a manufacturer's point of view, the 500GB will have 500*1000*1000*1000 = 500000000000 bytes. From a computer's point of view, 500GB is actually 500*1024*1024*1024 = 536870912000 bytes. So, a hard drive that promises to have 500 GB storage space will actually display 465.66GB, 536870912000-500000000000 = 36870912000 bytes (34.34GB) less storage space when connected to a computer. This is true of every drive you buy
Question: Can this be used as a normal hdd storage drive for a desktop pc
Answer: I have two NAS drives in my computer, and they work great. I bought two easystore external hard drives and removed the hard hard drives from the case. The hard drives are 5400 rpm drives. I only archive things on those drives, and they work great. The 7200 rpm drives are better for gaming but more expensive. The easystores only costed me $150. They also have a 256mb cache.

User questions & answers

Question: what if the NAS device fails? Can you remove the drives and put in another device to recover data or are they hardware layer encrypted
Answer: Yes. A long story short, my WD My Cloud Mirror suffered a "blown out" ethernet port due to a lightening strike. I purchased the EX2 Ultra (diskless) and placed my old WD Red drives, that were in the My Cloud Mirror, and it worked flawlessly. It didn't skip a beat. I was up and running like nothing happened. I was so relieved that the content on the drives were unaffected!
Question: Is the 8tb option include 1 drive at 8tbs or 2-4tb hdds
Answer: 2 4TB drives wich can then be run in a raid configuration.
Question: Im assuming any advertised capacity would be half using raid
Answer: Well, this is an old question, so nobody will see my glorious contribution; but here goes anyway! In order to use RAID 1, the two drives in use for that must be of the same size. They should be identical --- well nearly so. But, if one of the drives is slower than the other, the slower drive controls the speed (obviously). Two 6 TB drives in RAID 1, however, does not give you exactly 6 TB. There is a small part of the discs that gets assigned overhead duty to keep track of the status of the mirroring and to manage the mirroring. You could assume a high percentage --- maybe even more than 99%. I can't find any real figures for it, but since a 6 TB drive doesn't hold 6 TB anyway, you might just assume something like 5.98 TB for two nominal 6 TB drives in RAID 1. Keep in mind that RAID isn't free!! Not only is the capacity of the RAID array less than the combined capacity of the drives, there is also a performance hit because everything has to be written more than once and depending on which RAID (n) you choose, it may be split across several drives. Another consideration which I had not previously considered is the age of the drives. If you start with two identical drives, four years from now each of those drives will have been in service for, guess what, four years. If one of them fails, the other may not be long behind. Some folks (what we usually refer to as "THEY") would suggest a mix of drive ages. Your mileage may vary, as "they" say. :-)
Question: Has anyone used this nas with plex
Answer: I am going to buy the 4 bay version. If I can stream from Plex using 2 old Lenovo IX4-300D's than I am sure the ARMADA 388 1.6ghz chip will be fine for steaming from Plex. The Lenovo only has a 1.2ghz chip and ARMADA XP chip in it.

User questions & answers

Question: for redundancy does it require all disks be matched, capacity and firmware/model
Answer: If you build 4 hard drives as JBOD, the drives will be mounted as a single one drive with the total capacity of the 4 drives. If any hdd is failed, the data would be lost. And yes, it's always just only one cable needed to connect the device with your PC no matter what RAID modes you build. If you need 4 separate drives showing in your PC, you need to build Single mode under Windows, while under Mac, the default mode is Single, no need to use the software RAID Manager. In considering the data security, it's recommended to build RAID 5 and yes, 4 drives can build RAID 5.
Question: Is this model ts-351 m.2 2280 supports 6gbps or 500mbps? i saw on some website list it as 6gbps and some as 500mbps (on qnap website
Answer: Yes, just set it up in single mode. Each disk will show up as an independent drive. If you do switch it raid later you’ll need to backup and restore the data since the raid initialization will wipe the drive.

User questions & answers

Question: Does it support nfs and cifs
Answer: I know what you are saying. Thru make it sound like it's thr Pro when its not? Right? I order 4 one time then realized they weren't the Pro I cancel the order. Be careful. But Amazon always has their 30 monry back Guarantee.
Question: Does this have 8 gb ram? spec says 8gb ddr3l ram (2x2gb, max 8gb
Answer: Mine was in anti static bag with plastic holders on each end. It is factory packaging.
Question: How many drives and which raid configuration it comes with? product title says raid 1 and description says raid
Answer: Ideally, setting up RAID (the term for redundanncy) does stipulate similar, if not identical disks. There are complex math calculations the device does in writing redundant issues across multiple drives. If you use different type/size drives, the system will use the least common denominator in capacity available on each drive.
Question: Does this bundle comes pre configured already with a two 4t seagate hard disk drive and 8gb of ram
Answer: Hi, On this listing, it is 500mbps. So I will go with that to be safe. Thanks, EW
