User questions & answers
Question: | Clone software available or not? desc "ssd dashboard and cloning software download (4) " would like to clone my c drive to it |
Answer: | The Acronis WD Edition (a special eidtioin of Acronis Backup) did not work for me as it did not see the SanDisk drive on the USB dongle. I ended up using the full version of EaseUS Todo Backup but the free version of it would do the job as well. Both are Windows solutions but with Todo Backup you should be able to create the bootable CD/DVD on a WIndows machine then use it on anything else that will let you boot. Clonezilla is a Linux based solution that I've also used before but it's not as intuitive. You burn an ISO image to a CD/DVD or a USB stick (different version for the latter) and boot to it and follow the instructions. You create a bootable CD or DVD with Todo Backup after the Windows installation and boot to it (you may need to change your boot options in BIOS to be able to do that) with the SanDisk plugged into the USB. Choose the source drives (there's a small partition ahead of the drive C partition that you need to check), and any other partitions you created, then continue and choose the destination drive, the SanDisk. Choose "optimize for SSD" and then proceed and wait a long time (a few hours). The remaining time left indicator, like it is with many of these backup programs, will tel yo there's only 5 or 10 minutes left in the copy operation when it will take a few hours. I left mine go overnight and it was finished in the morning but in my experience, it would have taken only a few hours (I just didn't check until morning). You can continue to use the Todo Backup CD/DVD you created to back up your PC/laptop to an external hard drive for regular backup. The full (paid) version allows you to restore incremental backups so I feel it's worth the money, but if you always only make a full backup, the free one will do nothing more for you. |
Question: | Is this compatible and does it fit a late 2011 macbook pro to replace the sata disk hard drive |
Answer: | Yes. The "Unibody" MacBook Pro models are compatible with a 2.5-inch (notebook) SATA drive at as much as 9.5mm thick. http://www.everymac.com/systems/apple/macbook_pro/macbook-pro-unibody-faq/macbook-pro-13-15-17-mid-2009-how-to-upgrade-hard-drive-ssd.html This Sandisk SSD is the 7mm form factor, however, I don't think it's significant because Apple uses the screw heads to hold the drive in place. You can view the installation (instructions) for free at OWC https://eshop.macsales.com/installvideos/ -- the "Early 2011" revision is identical in procedure to your "Late 2011" |
Question: | Does it come with the required sata cable |
Answer: | I have MANY SSD's in MANY older laptops and in MANY 2.5" USB drive cases, and have never had to worry about a SATA cable. For laptops and such USB cases, you just slide the drive as is, into the SATA interface pins -- it only will go one way, and you're done. If you're going to install this 2.5" form factor drive into a desktop or tower machine, you should get a kit to do so. It should come with proper adapters and the needed SATA cable for THAT specific application. I have never, ever, seen such a drive come with a SATA cable, as in the vast majority of cases, it simply isn't needed. My laptops span the 2008 to 2014 manufactured date range. |
Question: | Mlc or tlc? thanks |
Answer: | The old models (those with MLC), the "G25" in its name and the new TLC-based devices instead called "G26". https://pcpartpicker.com/forums/topic/214469-sandisk-ssd-plus-120gb240gb-models-with-the-model-number-ending-in-g26-have-different-nand-flash-quick-rant |

User questions & answers
Question: | Does this one have the option of Transferring files or photos from phone directly onto drive or is computer needed |
Answer: | You should be able to access it thru the files app on an iPad or an iPhone as long as you have the correct cable. My iPad Pro will work great with it. |
Question: | The posted dimensions do not seem correct when looking at user photos (4.34 inches x 2.24 inches x 1.68 inches). Is it really 1.68" high |
Answer: | No - correct dimensions are 4.345" x 2.254" x 0.45" (just measured with my calipers) No clue how anyone could come up with 1.68 inches high. It's pretty small and faster than anything I've ever used. |
Question: | Can I transfer smaller files |
Answer: | Yes; you can think of 500GB as the drive's capacity (although the operation system will use up a tiny fraction of that total). You can use is just like any other hard drive. The only real difference is that it has no moving parts and the transfer rate is FAST! |
Question: | Can this be used to provide cctv video storage (constantly reading/writing............forever |
Answer: | No; nothing is forever. Solid state disks have a maximum number of writes, referred to as TBW (terrabytes written) which are typically 65 to 150 TBW. SanDisk estimates about 65-80 TBW depending on device. Putting this in perspective, TBW stands for Terabytes Written. It can also be referred to as “endurance”. It is a metric indicated by hardware manufactures to state how many terabytes could be written to the solid state disk (SSD) during it’s lifetime. The TBW metric is an important one to look out for when buying an SSD as it indicates how long a drive can be operational and useful before needing to replace it with a new one. For example, if your drive has a capacity of 100 GB's, and the drive was rated at 100 TBW, then this means that the drive can be fully rewritten 1024 times! (1 Terabyte = 1024 Gigabytes). Reading is forever, but writing is the limit... Solution: plan to replace the SSD when you approach the capacity metric for TBW... use the "old" drive as a read only archive. I used to do this for databases - put the data which is static on the SSD's for fast access and the dynamic data on the hard drives. The TBW rates are constantly improving and someday may be infinite, but we're definitely not at that point. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Where do you get the software to migrate your old hard drive to this ssd |
Answer: | I had good results with falconfour utility disk available free at their website. Install the utilities on an expanded CD, DVD, or thumbdrive and boot your computer on the utility disk. Select miniXP and then launch windows explorer. Copy all of your files from your old drive to the new drive. DO NOT copy the "system volume information" file. Disconnect the old drive, remove the utility program and you should be able to boot up on your new drive. It worked for me, but no promises that it will work for you. |
Question: | What type of controller it uses |
Answer: | The 120GB & 240GB models uses Silicon Motion's SM2246xt controller. Which is a low cost DRAM-less model of the SM2246EN. http://www.custompcreview.com/news/computex-2015-silicon-motions-sm2256-sm2246xt/24498/I have no idea which controller is used on the new 480GB model. Looking at max sequential read results of it compared to the 240GB model, it could be using a different controller. |
Question: | is this as fast as the 850 EVO from samsung |
Answer: | The theoretical read speak is similar (520 MB/s vs 517 MB/s), the write speed of 850 EVO is much better 424 MB/s vs Sandisk Plus's 350 MB/s. In practical everyday use I think the actual difference is barely noticeable. |
Question: | Does it come with cloning software |
Answer: | No cloning software included. 30 day trial version of 'Macrium Reflect' worked for me perfectly. Super easy & fast. Software: http://goo.gl/NKd5qg & Tutorial: https://goo.gl/SQxAuL |
Question: | Update: I just received this drive and it is under warranty but with only THREE years of the FIVE year warranty remaining |
Answer: | Amazon would have shipped your drive from one of several sellers supplying this part. For information regarding your particular sale, it would be better to reach out to the seller you received it from. |
Question: | Are these drives new and unused? Full warranty from WDC |
Answer: | Only buy these drives from Amazon if you want to be sure you get the factory warranty. Otherwise, you risking the chance that they will be OEM and no warranty. |
Question: | Do these drives have the 5 year warranty from WesternDigital - you had a bad review saying these are OEM and didnt have a warranty |
Answer: | Unless a listing specifically states manufacture warranty, items will more than likely have warranty through the seller, such as ourselves. |

User questions & answers
Question: | will this work with any brand of ssd |
Answer: | Yes, it works in the PS4. The default PS4 drive is an HGST 5400rpm drive. This one is the same brand and form factor, but significantly bigger and faster. As to which would be faster, it depends on what you're doing and how often you do it. You're going to see noticeable improvement over the default drive in game loads with either drive. Installing games to the hard drive and loading a game or level the first time will be faster from a 7200rpm standard hard drive than a 5400rpm hybrid because the hybrid has to load from the platters the first time it loads a file. With repeated loads of the same game or level, it "learns" what is being used most often and stores that information in the flash memory, then loads from there instead, speeding subsequent load times when reloading the same game, map, level or app. You would see less benefit playing a single player campaign or when switching between games because the hybrid needs to load a file two or three times for it to "learn" which files are used most often.Short answer: Sometimes. Tests show that the hybrids perform almost as fast as a solid state drive, and they're a good price right now. It depends on whether you find the potential speed increase to be worth the extra cost. |

User questions & answers
Question: | I keep seeing the word laptop in the description. will this fit in my tower? its from 1996 but it is sata |
Answer: | The reason it says laptop is because of the physical size of the drive. This is a 2.5 inch drive meaning it is small enough and to fit into a laptop. Desktop drives are usually 3.5 inches. So it should work fine but you will probably need to buy an adapter to mount it inside your desktop tower. (Here is an example of an adapter: https://www.amazon.com/Sabrent-Internal-Drive-Mounting-BK-HDDH/dp/B00G57BN1M/ref=sr_1_4?s=pc&ie=UTF8&qid=1489599904&sr=1-4&keywords=2.5+to+3.5+adapter). The sata cable in your computer should also connect and work regardless of the version. This drive has Sata 3 port and your computer may have an older version if it is from 1996. Question: | what do you mean by "generous battery life |
Answer: | Ssd drives do not spin at all like traditional hard drives at 5200 or 7200 rpm. So ssd drives do not use up your battery nearly the same. That is if you are swith in to an ssd. |
Question: | can I use this to replace ps4 2.5'' hdd |
Answer: | Yes but has a smaller capacity. see how here http://www.gamesradar.com/how-to-upgrade-ps4-hard-drive/ |
Question: | Is this drive a backward compatible to sata 1 as my old toshiba laptop is with sata1hard disk drive |
Answer: | Yes. |
Question: | Hi all: is this m.2 2230 ssd will work on windows 7 sp1 version? many thanks in advance |
Answer: | To the best of my knowledge it should work. However, it also depends what you are installing it in. I installed mine in my Surface Pro X. It worked beautifully. |
Question: | Does this drive make any sounds? Looking to replace a similar one from Dell that crackles and pings |
Answer: | There are no moving parts. It is silent. |
Question: | I have a surface laptop 3 for business - 15 inch, black (metal), intel core i7, 16gb, 256g. if i install this will it run windows 10 pro |
Answer: | Yes, I have the i5 128GB and this was a drop in replacement for the original drive. There is a handy YouTube video that shows how to pull apart the little tray to mount it. Super simple, took me 10 minutes total. |
Question: | My surface pro x ssd has one opening slot at the bottom to insert and this one your selling has two openings at the bottom, will It still work |
Answer: | Yes, it will still work. |
