12 best generic internal hard drives
Generic internal hard drives are essential computer components used for data storage. They are commonly found in desktop computers, laptops, servers, and various electronic devices. Here's what you need to know about them:
Function: Internal hard drives are primary storage devices used to store and retrieve digital data. They provide a non-volatile, long-term storage solution for operating systems, software applications, files, and user data.
Types: There are two main types of internal hard drives:
- Hard Disk Drives (HDDs): These drives store data on spinning magnetic disks (platters). Data is read and written using a mechanical arm with read/write heads. HDDs are known for their high storage capacities but are generally slower and less durable than SSDs.
- Solid State Drives (SSDs): SSDs use NAND flash memory chips to store data. They have no moving parts, which makes them faster, more reliable, and more power-efficient than HDDs. SSDs are often used for faster data access and system performance.
Capacity: Internal hard drives come in a wide range of storage capacities, from a few hundred gigabytes (GB) to multiple terabytes (TB). The choice of capacity depends on the user's storage needs.
Form Factor: Internal hard drives come in various form factors, with 3.5-inch and 2.5-inch drives being the most common for desktop and laptop computers, respectively. Smaller form factors, such as M.2 and U.2, are often used in ultrabooks and high-performance desktops.
Interface: The interface of an internal hard drive determines how it connects to a computer's motherboard. Common interfaces include SATA (Serial Advanced Technology Attachment) and NVMe (Non-Volatile Memory Express) for SSDs. The choice of interface can affect data transfer speeds.
Performance: SSDs are known for their superior performance compared to HDDs. They offer faster boot times, application loading, and file transfers. HDDs are typically slower but provide larger storage capacities for a lower cost per gigabyte.
Reliability: SSDs are generally more reliable than HDDs due to their lack of moving parts. HDDs are more susceptible to mechanical failures over time, such as disk platter damage or head crashes.
Usage: Internal hard drives are used for various purposes, including storing the operating system, software, multimedia files, documents, and backups. In some cases, multiple drives may be used in a single system for redundancy or enhanced storage performance.
Upgrades: Many users upgrade their internal hard drives to increase storage capacity or improve system performance. This can involve replacing an existing drive with a higher-capacity model or adding an additional drive.
Data Backup: It's important to regularly back up data stored on internal hard drives to prevent data loss in case of drive failure.External backup drives or cloud storage services are commonly used for this purpose.
In summary, generic internal hard drives are fundamental data storage components used in computers and electronic devices. They come in HDD and SSD varieties, with varying capacities, form factors, and interfaces to meet different storage needs. The choice between HDDs and SSDs depends on factors such as performance requirements, budget, and usage scenarios. Proper data backup practices are crucial to safeguard data stored on these drives.

User questions & answers
Question: | Is the 2tb (st2000dm008) internal hard drive cmr or smr |
Answer: | The 2TB, 4TB, and 8TB drives are all SMR, which means they are slow for random writes and not suitable as boot drives. (Google "Why SMR drives are sub-optimal for write-intensive workloads".) |
Question: | Is this really 7200rpm? the model number suggests otherwise |
Answer: | I got the ST4000DM004 which claims 7200 rpm on amazon and my computer is reporting it has a media rotation rate of 5425 rpm |
Question: | Is a sata cable included in the package |
Answer: | Cables not included. You can buy a SATA data cable and likely the appropriate power cable for your computer right here on Amazon. Depending on your power supply, the power cable may already be connected to it in your computer -- some have that and some do not. |
Question: | Is this 7200 or 5400rpm |
Answer: | Only the 1 TB (#ST1000DM010) and 2 TB (#ST2000DM008) models are 7200, all the larger models are 5400. Both the llisted speed and model number change in the product description as you pick different disk size options. This is consistent with Seagate's website -- From the home page, drill down through (or search for) Internal / Hard Drives / BarraCuda - Learn More, and then click the 3.5 inch models tab (NOT the 3.5 inch PRO models tab). Then click on the data sheet next to any model to get a PDF with a table containing all of the models along with their drive speeds and other specs.. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Is this drive smr if so i don't want it |
Answer: | No, it’s not. All Ironwolf and Itonwolf pro drives are SMR free, according to Seagate |
Question: | Does any one know a case where 3 could fit inside |
Answer: | I have 3 of these in a Synology 4 bay NAS DiskStation DS918+ works great! |
Question: | I purchased (2) 12-tb: anyone knows why i get 10.91-tb for each? why are we short |
Answer: | manufacturer considers 1 Megabyte to be 1000 Kilobytes, 1 Gigabyte to be 1000 Megabytes, 1 Terabyte to be 1000 Gigabytes and so on. This is correct considering that kilo means 1000 and mega means 1000000 (10^6). However, computers calculate on base 2 and to them, 1 MB is actually 1024 kilobytes, 1GB is 1024MB and 1 TB is 1024GB. This difference in the method of computation is responsible for this "missing space." Let's take an example of a 500 GB hard disk. From a manufacturer's point of view, the 500GB will have 500*1000*1000*1000 = 500000000000 bytes. From a computer's point of view, 500GB is actually 500*1024*1024*1024 = 536870912000 bytes. So, a hard drive that promises to have 500 GB storage space will actually display 465.66GB, 536870912000-500000000000 = 36870912000 bytes (34.34GB) less storage space when connected to a computer. This is true of every drive you buy |
Question: | Can this be used as a normal hdd storage drive for a desktop pc |
Answer: | I have two NAS drives in my computer, and they work great. I bought two easystore external hard drives and removed the hard hard drives from the case. The hard drives are 5400 rpm drives. I only archive things on those drives, and they work great. The 7200 rpm drives are better for gaming but more expensive. The easystores only costed me $150. They also have a 256mb cache. |

User questions & answers
Question: | How have these typically been renewed |
Answer: | Just get the small seam ripper. I removed 6 logos in a few minutes. Would've been faster but one of them was particularly troublesome. A tiny wrinkle of material was sewn into the logo material and had to be very careful not to damage the shirt threads. The seam ripper is less than 4 bucks.https://www.amazon.com/Dritz-608-Seam-Ripper-Small/dp/B005574EBO/ref=sr_1_17?s=arts-crafts&ie=UTF8&qid=1480374254&sr=1-17&keywords=seam+ripper |
Question: | Is 7200 RPM accurate |
Answer: | Yes they are |
Question: | Does this include a warranty or buyer protection |
Answer: | Not only does the size not shrink in the wash, but the color lasts and lasts. |
Question: | Is there a sata cable |
Answer: | the size is accurate so I would get 12 size unless youre taller would get a bigger size. A 12 sizes should fine. |

Question: | Does the 14tb drive have the power disable feature |
Answer: | My husband is 6'2" and weighs 250. 3X is very big and long. He likes it that way. I hope that helps. Have no idea what size a 44 would be. Sorry. Shirt is nice weight as well. |
Question: | Is the ultrstar 8tb drive warrantied by western digital and for how long |
Answer: | No, they run true to sizes listed. These shirts are the absolute best a shirt can be. I love them, and have been wearing them for at least 12 years. I now own at least 30 of them, and they are the only shirt I wear unless my wife says I need something different for some occasion. User questions & answers
Question: | Does this drive support sata iii |
Answer: | Yes |
Question: | How do these compare with older PH3500U-1I72 version? Toshiba dropped the warranty on X300 to 2 years, why? What compromises were made |
Answer: | I think they are the same disk nearly, when I test the performance, they behave no difference. Moreover, both disks use the same firmware version. However, when i check the warranty period on Toshiba website, x300 stated as 3 years and ph3500u stated as 2 years, totally mixed up. |
Question: | What is warranty period? it is not available on toshiba site, or amazon |
Answer: | It appears the warranty period is 2 years on this particular model.Using the model # of HDWE140XZSTA found here in the description, I found the following on toshiba's web site:http://support.toshiba.com/support/viewContentDetail?contentId=4001732&pf=trueI personally went with the 5 TB hard drive and have been very happy with it.You might contact the actual seller and verify this info, but that is what I found on Toshiba's web site.Hope this helps. Later. |
Question: | What's the difference between this one and the older model |
Answer: | The X300 uses more advanced storage techniques and more efficient cache management techniques and protocols. It is faster, and more efficient. There is nothing wrong with the older model, I have both in use n my network, but the x300 is better suited for a busy digital media server especially if your server/workstation has multiple core processors. I like the X300 the only drawback (if you want to call it that) is tha te X300 is a little bit on the noisy side due t the read/write head technology used. It is not objectionable in my opinion. Both drives have been dependable. |

Answer: | You will need a mounting rail for the drive (with screws) to secure it in the computer, similar to http://www.amazon.com/StarTech-com-Universal-Mounting-Bracket-BRACKET/dp/B0001UZQWG/ref=sr_1_2?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1402791368&sr=1-2&keywords=hard+drive+mounting+rail+kita SATA cable to connect to your motherboard if you do not have an extra available, such as: http://www.amazon.com/Monoprice-18-Inch-Locking-90-Degree-108783/dp/B009GUXU52/ref=pd_sim_pc_23?ie=UTF8&refRID=1039H3T1A80RRZ6K7P7H,and an available power plug or Y-cable (the white 4 pin or 6-pin) depending on what power cables your computer has, again depending on whether your computer has an extra alreadyhttp://www.amazon.com/StarTech-com-PYO2SATA-Power-Splitter-Adapter/dp/B002N2EHVQ/ref=sr_1_4?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1402791237&sr=1-4&keywords=computer+power+y+cableorhttp://www.amazon.com/Computer-Molex-Power-Supply-Splitter/dp/B001PI9AAC/ref=sr_1_3?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1402791237&sr=1-3&keywords=computer+power+y+cableYour computer may already have a full width cable internally, in which case it will provide both power and communication |
Question: | Is everything I need to install this drive in my desktop included in the package |
Answer: | It only includes the drive. You have to make sure you have a SATA cable available. You also need screws, but it depends on your PC. Many new PC's do not use screws anymore. Instead they you reataining clips and brackets. On the otherhand, if you are replacing a bad drive, then you can just swap this one in its place. |
Question: | Why is this particular model about one-half the price of the following model |
Answer: | Buyer's beware! The Western Digital website blog is full of complaints on the current 1TB Black Drive . People with the software to test them have found that the new 1TB WD Black is a restickered WD Blue: a single platter with the performance and latency of the 1TB WD Blue. The 2TB, 3TB and 4TB WD Blacks have 3, 4 and 5 platters, not just one and look nothing like the 1TB Black which looks like a WD Blue clone. WD's blog manager is arguing that it "meets the specification" which has conveniently been neglected by WD and their vendors to list (but not on NewEgg which has the throughput of the1TB WD Black listed on a WD round up of the Black Series. Customers are saying they do NOT meet their expectation and that the extended warranty is not a comfort since what they wanted was a "high-performance" drive, not a reduced performance drive with better endurance.I would want to see a drive that looked like its family, not like another product line. Read the comments before you buy, then decide what you want to do. |
Question: | So many of these reviews say the drives are old (pass their 5 year warranty). Is this true |
Answer: | You Get A warranty for 5 years no matter what as far as the age of these drives i have no idea but that does not matter since you get a 5 year warranty no matter what and they are great drives they offer great performance definitely worth the price get this drive for your laptop you wont be disappointed |

For "Drive Bays Supported", please contact your Solutions Provider as compatibility with host device will vary based on the system. Workload is a measure of the data throughput of the year, and it is defined as the amount of data written, read or verified by commands from the host system. MTTF (Mean Time to Failure) is not a guarantee or estimate of product life; it is a statistical value related to mean failure rates for a large number of products which may not accurately reflect actual operation. Actual operating life of the product may be different from the MTTF. Read and write speed may vary depending on the host device, read and write conditions, and file size. User questions & answers
Question: | Does this Work with tivo |
Answer: | In a stock PS4? No. The PS4 can only hold a 2.5" hard drive internally. But, if you purchased the Nyko Data Bank for your PS4, you could essentially use any 3.5" hard drive that you wanted.Update: I just installed this hard drive in my PS4 (with an external set-up), and it functions FLAWLESSLY. |
Question: | My toshiba 8gb came with two partitions on it already - 2 and 5.4gb. is that how your 8gb hdd was, or is that a sign that it was used and returned |
Answer: | Bare drive is just that ... BARE.You need a place to put it and that is where cable connections come into play.I use an external case/power supply and all cables came with it. (NexStar CX)Internal use might require purchase of a cable. I must use external since mycomputer is a laptop. ONE eSATA connection gives me a classic two drive system. The Toshiba is a third drive. Both are in external cases. |
Question: | does it come with migration software |
Answer: | Generally, Toshiba HDD's tend to last longer than most other brands but from time to time some bad drives get out there. You would be hard pressed to find a more reliable brand out there, overall. I have a Toshiba 350 GB HDD (circa 2007) that I just recently relegated to a older secondary PC that saw everyday use for almost 10 years and it is still going strong. |
Question: | drive buy limit on a nas drive, makes sense. raid5 or something with not 100% parity overhead would require at least 3 drives. why |
Answer: | I was shocked to just discover this drive is not listed on the Toshiba US website. I own three of the drives and one from 2014 just failed. When I went to investigate the warranty terms by putting in the model number in the support website (http://support.toshiba.com/support/modelHome?freeText=DT01ACA300), the pop-up error message was this product is unknown in the Americas, New Zealand, and Australia. I will post a review with a screen print of the message. |
