10 best cloud drives

Cloud drives, often referred to as cloud storage or online storage, are services that allow individuals and organizations to store and access their digital data over the internet. Unlike traditional external hard drives, cloud drives are not physical devices but rather remote servers hosted by service providers.

Key features and aspects of cloud drives include:

  1. Remote Storage: Cloud drives provide a means to store data remotely on servers maintained by service providers. This enables users to access their data from anywhere with an internet connection.

  2. Accessibility: Data stored on a cloud drive can be accessed using various devices such as computers, tablets, smartphones, or other internet-enabled devices. Users can access their files by logging into the respective cloud drive account.

  3. File Synchronization: Many cloud drives offer file synchronization, allowing users to sync files across multiple devices.Changes made on one device are automatically updated on all synchronized devices.

  4. Security and Encryption: Cloud drive services typically employ encryption protocols to secure data during transmission and while stored on their servers. Some services also offer additional encryption options for sensitive data.

  5. Collaboration: Cloud drives often include collaboration features, enabling multiple users to work on and edit documents simultaneously. This facilitates teamwork and enhances productivity.

  6. Storage Capacity: Cloud drives offer different storage plans with varying capacities. Users can choose a plan based on their storage needs and budget.

  7. Cost and Subscription Models: Cloud drives usually offer both free and paid subscription plans. Paid plans often provide additional features, more storage capacity, and better support.

  8. Integration with Applications: Many cloud drives integrate with various applications and software, allowing seamless file sharing and access directly from those applications.

  9. Automatic Backup: Cloud drives often have automatic backup features that continuously back up selected files or folders, ensuring data integrity and availability.

  10. File Sharing and Links: Users can share files and folders stored on cloud drives with others by generating shareable links. Access permissions and expiration dates can be set for enhanced control.

Overall, cloud drives have become an integral part of modern digital life, offering convenient and scalable solutions for data storage, accessibility, and collaboration.

User questions & answers

Question: Can I connect a usb cable to this drive to access what's stored on it via computer or tv? or can you only access stuff through a network connection
Answer: if you really want to access via USB, just get a harddrive docking station. They are so much cheaper then networked attached storage anyway, less electronics to fail...just better all the way around unless you are dealing with someone who can't cope with connecting and disconnecting stuff, it's far better. You can sway in and out many drives and store them...
Question: questions: does it by default appear in windows 10 pro file manager? can the contents be encrypted? can i directly copy to the drive via usb
Answer: This is a network attached storage device. In order to use this with Windows 10 you'll need to map it as a network drive. Yes, the contents can be encrypted. No, it's not a USB device, it's a network device.
Question: does this support time machine
Answer: Yes, all Buffalo NAS support time machine.
Question: Anyone use this successfully as a Plex media server
Answer: To clarify, this can absolutely be used as storage for the media you host on a plex server but you will need to run the plex server on another device. Kind of Similar to DC Mike's setup; I have a an old AMD PC that hosts my plex server (Athlon x2 4400+, 8gb DDR2, and Radeon HD 6870 *can't remember if video card helps with plex decoding at all, but it's there anyway and has no other use to me) I do have a couple TB worth of media on HDDs in that box but the majority of my data is on similar NAS devices like this buffalo Linkstation. Literally any USB external or NAS drive can host media for a Plex server with extremely little chance of limited performance. The limiting factor in Plex performance comes with the capability of the computer hosting the server to decode and encode media to play on the device you're trying to stream to (for instance, accessing your plex server from another pc takes much fewer resources than on your ipad would require because the server pc has to reencode the media to a format that iOS can utilize) and, in the case of remote streaming, your internet connection. The 10+ year old pc I described can stream multiple 1080p video remotely with no visible lag and I've tried as much as 7 local network 1080p streams and had not issue there.tl;dr - This can host all of your music, video, pictures for a plex server to access but not run the plex server itself.

User questions & answers

Question: what if the NAS device fails? Can you remove the drives and put in another device to recover data or are they hardware layer encrypted
Answer: Yes. A long story short, my WD My Cloud Mirror suffered a "blown out" ethernet port due to a lightening strike. I purchased the EX2 Ultra (diskless) and placed my old WD Red drives, that were in the My Cloud Mirror, and it worked flawlessly. It didn't skip a beat. I was up and running like nothing happened. I was so relieved that the content on the drives were unaffected!
Question: Is the 8tb option include 1 drive at 8tbs or 2-4tb hdds
Answer: 2 4TB drives wich can then be run in a raid configuration.
Question: Im assuming any advertised capacity would be half using raid
Answer: Well, this is an old question, so nobody will see my glorious contribution; but here goes anyway! In order to use RAID 1, the two drives in use for that must be of the same size. They should be identical --- well nearly so. But, if one of the drives is slower than the other, the slower drive controls the speed (obviously). Two 6 TB drives in RAID 1, however, does not give you exactly 6 TB. There is a small part of the discs that gets assigned overhead duty to keep track of the status of the mirroring and to manage the mirroring. You could assume a high percentage --- maybe even more than 99%. I can't find any real figures for it, but since a 6 TB drive doesn't hold 6 TB anyway, you might just assume something like 5.98 TB for two nominal 6 TB drives in RAID 1. Keep in mind that RAID isn't free!! Not only is the capacity of the RAID array less than the combined capacity of the drives, there is also a performance hit because everything has to be written more than once and depending on which RAID (n) you choose, it may be split across several drives. Another consideration which I had not previously considered is the age of the drives. If you start with two identical drives, four years from now each of those drives will have been in service for, guess what, four years. If one of them fails, the other may not be long behind. Some folks (what we usually refer to as "THEY") would suggest a mix of drive ages. Your mileage may vary, as "they" say. :-)
Question: Has anyone used this nas with plex
Answer: I am going to buy the 4 bay version. If I can stream from Plex using 2 old Lenovo IX4-300D's than I am sure the ARMADA 388 1.6ghz chip will be fine for steaming from Plex. The Lenovo only has a 1.2ghz chip and ARMADA XP chip in it.

User questions & answers

Question: Can it be used as a datastore for esxi or backup VMs
Answer: Technically you can but not recommended. You will likely get terrible performance because the CPU and memory is not designed for this use case. 512MB RAM is very low for a datastore. This model is really geared towards traditional file sharing and media streaming. You want something with higher CPU and read/wrtie caching like the DS218/DS218+.
Question: Is the memory upgradable
Answer: No, the DS220j only supports 512MB
Question: what physical size harddrives can be used
Answer: Carlos is correct. 16tb is the limit of the ds218j or 8tb in raid configuration and the DS220j is 2ea 12 Tb for a total of 24Tb or 12Tb, in used in a raid situation.
Question: If single drive is installed initially, then 2nd drive is added later. does raid 1 get configured? or does both drive need to be installed together
Answer: I installed one drive initially, and then added a second drive later. The second drive was automatically added as a Raid 1 drive.

User questions & answers

Question: Am I able to set the permissions so people can read and write data but not delete anything
Answer: Contrary to HIS answer I got my Linkstation of to work with Windows 10. When it comes out of the box the SMB option is in the OFF position. You have to go to Advanced then File Sharing. The SMB setting is there. I switched it on. After that mapping network drives and running backups to the NAS went without error.
Question: Does it support IP cameras like the synology surveillance station? If no, which other models do
Answer: Don’t buy buffalo, I’ve had two crash and lost most of my data. It does support cameras but I will never buy anything from buffalo. I have a Synology that also supports cameras and has run flawlessly.
Question: Can i backup/upload photos from my iphone? if yes, then does it store the photo in same format(eg.: heic) with exif metadata & same size as in iphone
Answer: Yes, you can backup/upload your iPhone photos with our WebAccess-I app. It does not alter the files in any way.
Question: standard drives" does not sound like a nas (iron wolf) rated 24x7 duty drive. if "standard" desktop model drive, can they be upgraded to nas spec
Answer: Yes, the Buffalo LinkStations use what I would call common home computer drives. Yes, you can replace those drives with any similar size SATA drives. But, I see no need as I have five Buffalos running 24/7 on my network, the oldest purchased in 2009, the newest in 2018. I have had no failures - zero. If you configure the Buffalo to RAID 1 you have no problem even if a drive dies as they are hot-swap and the system does automatic restore on insertion of a new drive.

User questions & answers

Question: how easy is it to set this up in my HOME
Answer: Easy. Plug it in to power and an Ethernet connection. Download the WD my cloud app on your PC and log in to administer the device. That’s about it.
Question: Can each family members have their own folder with a password
Answer: Hi - I bought the 4TB my Cloud Home device. I am still trying all the features. It is possible to let your family members set-up their own user ID, password and dedicated folders which only your family member will have access to etc. I found it very annoying that as administrator of the home cloud, you WILL NOT have any control o what they are storing (or) access to any of those files. May be the WD designed the product that way that individuals have complete data security to their own areas. I am still learning. Good Luck
Question: Can you install BitTorrent/transmission client on it
Answer: From what I can see, this is pretty locked out but it does come with a few services preinstalled (Plex, IFTTT etc.)
Question: Can this be connected to a local network without an internet gateway? Does this require an internet connection to function locally
Answer: You could but it would be of limited value. It is not designed for local storage. It wants to be a Cloud device. Go read this review and the mnaufacturer’s response: https://www.amazon.com/review/R438M3H6BK69U/ref=cm_cr_srp_d_rdp_perm?ie=UTF8&ASIN=B076CTK55W

User questions & answers

Question: Is there any subscription fee, or just 1 time purchase? Is data stored on WD servers somewhere or is the cloud just the physical hard drive at home
Answer: Yes.
Question: Does it require a static public IP address? Or can I use domain name using a product like NO-IP.org
Answer: No, it does not connect to other devices. This is strictly a disc to disc duplicator. It will not copy from a different media format to duplicate to a dvd/cd disc. Thank you very much.
Question: I'd like to set this up to set aside a certain amount of space for time machine backups for two macs and have the rest for network storage. How
Answer: Hi, it will burn at 8x as the writing speed is also determined by the media that you used. The maximum speed of the burner is 24x, but the media would also need to support at the highest speed of the burner to burn at the maximum speed. If the blank disc is only 4x at top burning speed, then it's going to be duplicating at 4x. This is not a hardware issue, but the blank media's issues.
Question: Can i use the built-in USB port to access the files writeen in the HD Faster, or the access is only throught network connection
Answer: yes it will. I have copied many cds that I have made. it is quick too.

User questions & answers

Question: can ds218j be setup to work seamlessly with windows 10 file history backup feature
Answer: Yes it comes with all cables needed, and the unit works great!
Question: Cannot see this device on Windows 10, thousands of other people have the same problem. Why
Answer: The short answer is yes, but its not as easy as it sounds. It requires using a PC with a video capture card. After you record the program, you can then burn it onto a DVD. I suggest you look at a few forums on how this is done. http://www.tomsguide.com/answers/id-2438853/watch-record-shows-laptop-windows-internet.html
Question: Can you attached additional external drive enclosures via usb? can you attach an eternal usb hub with multiple external drives
Answer: I have it running on my Mini running Mavricks and it works fine.
Question: So, does it transcode and does it stream video well or is it choppy
Answer: I can't say I know either of those specific components, but unless they differ somehow from the usual recorder and DVD player, you'd hook the video (yellow) cable from the dvd player's Video out to the godvd and another yellow video cable from the godvd to the recorder's Video in.

User questions & answers

Question: Why such a low rating
Answer: WD 4TB My Cloud Mirror (Dual-drive) --> You absolutely CAN set it up to use a dynamic DNS service. The setting can easily be found on the Dashboard of the device's web GUI -- it is located in "Settings | Network Services | Dynamic DNS"; the two options are "www.DynDNS.org" and "no-ip.DDNS" .4TB WD My Cloud NAS (single drive) --> You cannot set dynamic DNS on the NAS, but you can set it up through your router (unless you're using double-NAT...i.e. Comcast -> Router1 -> Router2 -> NAS). If you're using a double-NAT network, you'll need to install a client-based service on an always-on computer like "DUC" provided by no-ip.ddns.Generally, the answer is usually "yes" if you have the knowledge...
Question: Can I print pictures from ibi to my home printer
Answer: There is a convenient slider under the My Cloud settings that you can adjust to limit the space allocated for Time Machine backups. No need to partition the drive. It is recommended that you 1st leave the slider to maximum usage for your first backups (use an ethernet cable at first for faster transfer), then adjust the slider down to limit how much space Time Machine will occupy. The remaining space can be used for storage/media server. If you need more space, you can always add a 2nd, 3rd, etc. hard drive to the WD My Cloud through its USB 3.0 port.
Question: How do you backup the ibi in case it dies
Answer: The previous answers are wrong. The USB port is for adding additional hard drives only. You can only access the files through the Ethernet connection.
Question: Does it recognize duplicate photos so I won’t get the same photo downloaded several times
Answer: Is your hub powered? Insufficient power tends to make some of these imports under perform.
