Answer: There will be 2 open pin slots per pin on one side, and 3 on the other, but it seats securely in the breadboard. You get what you see in the pictures. I don't know what you mean by "inverted;" as long as you keep the board's orientation static, your column headers aren't going to change, because both orientations are labeled. Just read it from the "top," regardless of which side of the center line you're working on.
Question: What operating system isn’t it
Answer: The direction of the cable does not matter. What matters is that the 'T' shaped board is plugged by the ribbon cable correctly. You could have the cable go over, or away from the pi -you would just need to rotate the 'T' board correctly. Best thing to do, is use as continuity tester (after connecting everything) and make sure the correct output pin of the pi corresponds with the correct pin label of the 'T' board.
