Regarding 'a better one that won't break the bank' - I'm not sure what your budget is, or what types of games he wants to play. He should probably start by googling the game name + "pc hardware requirements" i.e. https://www.google.com/#q=portal+2+pc+hardware+requirements - That will tell you (at minimum) what hardware you need. Usually getting hardware that's a little higher end (especially things like better graphics cards, SSD, more memory) will make game play a little nicer and allow for better graphics. 74HC595 is a Serial to Parallel Converter which has eight outputs (perfect) and three inputs that you use to feed data into it a bit at a time.
This chip makes it a little slower to drive the LEDs (you can only change the LEDs about 500,000 times a second instead of 8,000,000 a second) but it's still really fast, way faster than humans can detect, so it's worth it.

Answer: | It comes with a breadboard, LEDs and switches, but very minimal instructions/documents. But you can find tons of web sites from "how to assemble" to "how to write source code" including educational exercises and experiments, because the original intention of the Raspberry Pi is to educate young kids to learn embedded computings. This is a fairly reasonable price, I think. The "bare" Raspberry Pi is $35 (you can find the price on the Wikipedia), but you will definitely need a high capacity power supply, HDMI cable, case, micro SD card, keyboard and mouse. This kit doesn't come with a keyboard and mouse. It would probably be possible to use BlueTooth keyboard and mouse, but I don't recommend, because you will definitely need them BEFORE booting the operating system. Raspbian OS (Debian-based Linux) is recommended. I have tried Windows 10 IoT but it's super slow and almost useless. |

Answer: | The k means the processor is unlocked, meaning that you can overclock it. The f means there are no integrated graphics with the processor, meaning that you need a graphics card. The i9 9900k and kf are exactly the same, except the kf doesn't have integrated graphics. |

Answer: | The “kf” has the dedicated graphics disabled. Other than that it is the same. Which is why I purchased the “kf” over the “k” because it is cheaper and I have a dedicated GPU so I would never use the intel integrated graphics. |

2) You should apply 3.7V 18650 batteries that contains NO protective circuit board. If you use those with the board, when an overcurrent occurs, they will automatically cut off power for protection, which would suddenly shut down the Raspberry Pi. Thus, the smart car will stop working and the Raspberry Pi may be damaged.
3) If your batteries carry the protective board originally, you can just remove it for use.

LCD1602 Display Lesson
The display has an LED backlight and it can display two rows with up to 16 characters on each row. You can also see the rectangles for each character on the display and the pixels that make up each character. This LCD display is white on blue and is intended for showing text.
We will run the Arduino example program for the LCD library and learn how to control the LCD1602 Display in this lesson. We can attach a potentiometer for controlling the contrast of the display.
Power Supply Module Lesson
The power supply module with a green/red LED to indicate the presence of power, and an ON / OFF latching switch to control the power to the board. On this particular model and version, the center pin of the barrel socket is positive.
After connecting the wiring and uploading the Arduino program, we can use the potentiometer to control the extent of LED blinking.
