14 best usb external dvds
A USB external DVD drive is a peripheral device that allows you to read and write CDs and DVDs using a USB connection to your computer. It falls under the category of CD DVD Drives, Optical Drives, External Components, Computer Components, Computers Accessories, and Electronics. Here's what you should know about USB external DVD drives:
Purpose: USB external DVD drives are used for reading and writing optical discs, including CDs and DVDs. They serve as external alternatives to built-in optical drives on laptops and desktop computers that may not have an integrated optical drive.
Connection: These drives connect to your computer via a USB port. They are typically plug-and-play devices, requiring no additional drivers for most operating systems.
Compatibility: USB external DVD drives are compatible with a wide range of devices, including laptops, desktops, and even some tablets that have USB ports. They work with various operating systems such as Windows, macOS, and Linux.
Read and Write Capabilities: USB external DVD drives can read and write both CDs and DVDs, making them versatile for tasks like playing movies, installing software, burning data or media files, and creating backup discs.
Portability: These drives are portable and compact, making them easy to carry and use on the go. They are especially useful for laptops that lack built-in optical drives.
Speed: The speed of USB external DVD drives is measured in terms of read and write speeds, typically indicated as "X." Higher X values indicate faster data transfer rates. Common speeds include 8X, 16X, and 24X.
Power Source: Most USB external DVD drives draw power from the USB port itself, eliminating the need for an external power source or adapter. However, some high-speed models may require an additional power source for optimal performance.
Price Range: USB external DVD drives are available in a range of prices to suit different budgets.More expensive models may offer faster speeds and additional features.
Media Compatibility: These drives can read various disc formats, including CD-R, CD-RW, DVD-R, DVD+R, DVD-RW, DVD+RW, and DVD-RAM. Some models also support dual-layer (DL) DVDs for increased storage capacity.
Use Cases: USB external DVD drives are handy for various tasks, such as installing software from discs, playing DVDs or CDs, creating data backups, and archiving files. They are also useful for older computers that lack modern optical drives.
Design: The design of USB external DVD drives can vary, but they typically feature a slim and lightweight form factor. Some models may come with additional features like a disc tray, LED indicators, and anti-vibration mechanisms for stable disc reading and writing.
In summary, USB external DVD drives provide a convenient way to read and write optical discs on computers that lack built-in optical drives or for users who require a portable and versatile optical drive solution. They are compatible with various devices and operating systems and are useful for a range of tasks involving CDs and DVDs.

User questions & answers
Question: | Anyone noticed the usb cable provided seems like usb 2 instead usb |
Answer: | Indeed, the cable is USB 2, not 3. This shouldn't be an issue, though, because the drive speed is the limiting factor. Reading & writing CDs & DVDs (not Blu-Ray disks) is slow enough that USB 3's high data rates are wasted. |
Question: | Will it play bluray disk also |
Answer: | Im sorry, the product will not play blue ray |
Question: | can it be used with a mac? I have a new macbook pro running yosemite |
Answer: | Yes it does work on Mac, BUT the drive will not mount until you insert a disc into the drive. I tested this on both Yosemite and Sierra. On Sierra, I tested it against USB-c, which is the smaller port found on newer (2017 and forward) Macbook Pros. I used a USB-c to USB-a adapter to do so. It worked fine. |
Question: | Will this play on Windows |
Answer: | will this work on a lenovo ideapad with windows 10 |

Question: | does this device need 1 or 2 USB ports |
Answer: | Thank you for choosing Rubbermaid Home Solutions. Our goal is to provide our customers with the highest quality and service. Amazon does state there is a lock that isn't included. You may also find this in the description on our Rubbermaid website. |
Question: | Is this compatible with Windows |
Answer: | We think it would be best to build an additional solid platform to set it on and attach the wheels to the platform for best support. Also bolt the cabinet to the platform for safety. We don't feel it has enough structure at the bottom to support the weight if the wheels would be directly bolted to the cabinet without the support of the floor underneath. We are very pleased with the cabinet though and would definitely buy another one. Becky |
Question: | IS this CDR or CD RW & DVD-R or DVD-RW (or both |
Answer: | The shelving would need to be used with this cabinet. |

Verbatim External Slimline CD/DVD Writer
Though CDs and DVDs are still among the most commonly used media types, more and more computer manufacturers are choosing to leave optical drives out of their new models. If you still use these media types, or even newer optical media types such as Blu-ray discs or M-Discs, you may find yourself in the position of needing to buy a separate optical drive, and there are several things to consider.
Internal vs. External
Optical drives can either be internal or external, and it’s an important choice when deciding which optical drive to buy. Internal drives are actually placed inside your computer, connected via an IDE or SATA port. Internal drives are usually more affordable and have higher read/write speeds. However, installation can be difficult and for some laptops, impossible, given the ultra-slim profile of some newer models.
External drives, on the other hand, exist outside of your computer and connect to your computer via a USB or FireWire port. They can either pull power from your computer itself or from a separate power outlet. Typically, they are more compact, more portable, and can fit easily into a laptop bag. However, due to external connectivity, they may have slightly lower read/write speeds compared to internal drives.
Formats
Another important factor in deciding which drive to buy is the format you want to work in. Today most drives work with multiple formats, but it is still important to make sure the drive you’re buying is compatible with the media types you want to use. Some common formats most drives now support are DVD+R, DVD-R, DVD+RW, DVD-RW, CD-R, CD-RW, and DVD-ROM. Some less common formats include DVD-RAM, DVD+R/DVD-R Dual Layer and miniDVD. If you’d like to work with Blu-ray discs, make sure you get a drive that is Blu-ray compatible. Generally, if you’re unsure what media type you’ll be working with, choosing a drive that works with multiple media types may be your best option.
System Compatibility
With the prevalence of drives, finding one that is compatible with your operating system is less of a challenge than it has been. However, it is still important to make sure they are compatible, both with the hardware and software. If you choose to get an external drive, it will connect to your computer one of two ways: a USB port or FireWire port. While most computers will have at least one USB port, some newer models do not come with a FireWire port. You’ll also want to make sure you have enough USB ports to support your drive. Software-wise, some drives come with additional software, such as writing software; make sure it is compatible with your operating system as well.
Tray vs. Slot Loading
How a drive actually loads the disc may be another factor to consider. Typically there are two different loading styles: tray and slot. Tray loading is your typical DVD player style; you push a button, the tray ejects, you place the disc into the tray, and the tray goes back in. Drives with tray loading have the advantage of accommodating irregular sized discs (such as miniDVD), and feature a manual eject button, in case the disc fails. Slot loading is the newer style of disc loading; there is a slot on the drive in which you insert the disc without a tray – similar to your car CD player. Slot loading drives have fewer moving parts, and allow for a slim drive form factor, however, they may not recognize irregular shaped discs, so formats like miniDVD may not be supported.
M DISC Compatibility
Unlike traditional optical discs, which use dyes that break down over time, data stored on an M DISC is engraved on a patented inorganic write layer – it will not fade or deteriorate. This unique engraving process renders these archival grade discs practically impervious to environmental exposure, including light, temperature and humidity.* ISO/IEC 16963 longevity tests have proven the durability of M DISC technology, and it withstood rigorous testing by the US Department of Defense. Based on this testing, M DISC media has a projected lifetime of several hundred years.**
*U.S. Department Of Defense Longevity Test Summary
Storage Capacity
Verbatim M DISC media has storage capacities up to 100GB. M DISC BD-R media is compatible with the latest Blu-ray hardware from leading manufacturers – no special drives required for recording or playback. However, if you want to use M DISC DVD for archiving, you need to select a drive that is M DISC compatible.

M DISC Compatibility
The Verbatim Slimline Blu-ray writer is also M DISC compatible, allowing you to archive important data on M DISC media. Unlike traditional optical discs, which use dyes that break down over time, data stored on an M DISC is engraved on an inorganic write layer, which resists fading and deterioration. This unique engraving process renders these archival grade discs practically impervious to environmental exposure, including light, temperature and humidity.* ISO/IEC 16963 longevity tests have proven the durability of M DISC technology, and it withstood rigorous testing by the US Department of Defense. Based on this testing, data written on M DISC media has a projected lifetime of several hundred years.**

Question: | Does this support mdisk. if so does it support 25gb, 100gb or 125gb mdisk |
Answer: | According to Pioneer's site, single double and triple layer m-discs are supported. Since 125gb is quad layer, it might not be supported by this burner but other sizes will. https://www.pioneerelectronics.com/PUSA/Computer/Computer+Drives/BDR-XD07B |

User questions & answers
Question: | How do I tell the cables apart |
Answer: | headset. this product it is terrible. it causes noise on the system and affects the speakers and the headset. There are better audio switches out there. |
Question: | What is an integrated f cable for |
Answer: | No |
Question: | is this device compatible with Surface Pro 3 & Windows |
Answer: | Hi Tjay! I have the headset switcher you are considering, and it works great, but it is really made for attaching a microphone, speakers, and a headset to one computer. I would not recomend it for your application. However, if you search Amazon for "audio switch box" you will find many low cost switch selectors designed to connect multiple audio/video (A/V) devices to one A/V device. Most of these switch selectors are not too expensive, plus they give you video options you may want to use later. For your present need you will utilize only the audio inputs and outputs, all of which support stereo. Your biggest challenge may be that most of the switch boxes utilize only RCA-type audio jacks. Your computer, ipad, aand iphone probably use only miniature plug-in connections (3.5 mm); for some of the switch boxes you will have to purchase one or more "Y-adaptors" to converts RCA to 3.5 mm. One Y-adaptor sold by Amazon is listed as "2 x RCA Male, 1 x 3.5mm Stereo Female, Y-Cable 6-Inch" (about $3 + free shipping). A few of the switch boxes you may want to look at are listed as: 1) "Gino PC Monitoring 4 In 1 Out VGA Ports Audio Switch Box Blk" ($23 with four 3.5 mm inputs and four VGA inputs, plus one 3.5 mm output and one VGA output. Probably your best choice); 2) "Sima SVS-14 4 Input Manual A/V Selector" ($16 with four RCA A/V inputs, one RCA A/V output, plus a 3.5 mm headphone jack to monitor audio inputs); 3) "3-Way Audio Video AV RCA Switch Selector Box Splitter For XBOX XBOX360 DVD PS2 PS3 with AV Cable" ($4 with three RCA A/V inputs and one RCA A/V outputs); and 4) "TCC TC-716 6-Way Stereo Source Selector; BLACK VERSION" ($30 with six RCA A/V input/outputs, four of which are RCA and two, 3.5 mm. With this device, multiple inputs can be monitored at the same time and you would only have to purchase one Y-adaptor). I would say your best choice may be the Gino device because all the audio inputs and outputs have 3.5 mm connections (no Y-adaptors are necesary). Hope this helps. Blessings to you! |
Question: | Does the Cyberlink media suite work with Windows |
Answer: | It will work, but he will be conforming to an unbalanced signal, so he'll run the risk of getting some buzz and hum. |
Question: | Anyone use this just for kb/mouse but not video? i use an hd tv as a monitor and have extra hdmi on the t.v. so only need the kb/mouse functions |
Answer: | Yes, you will just need a 1/4” to headphone jack adapter if your headphones do not already have a 1/4” connector. |
Question: | The switch fails about 1 of 100 switches and I can't recover mouse/keyboard function without restarting the system I am switching to. Any fixes |
Answer: | I don't quite understand the question, what do you mean by external sound? Basically this device can act as a "3 input to 1 output" switch or "1 input to 3 outputs" switch. It is a passive device. So if you have several audio sources connected to one speaker pair, then you will be able to switch from one source to another and hear them separately in your speakers. Or if you have 3 pairs of speakers and you have a single audio signal, you can switch from one pair of speakers to another and listen to how the music sounds on different speakers. |
Question: | Does it work with Linux |
Answer: | I would suspect you can. I run 3 different line level synths using this device. Works great. |
Question: | Can you use a keyboard key/hot key to switch computers |
Answer: | There is no impedance protection on or off button on the selector box. |
