12 best voltage line conditioners
Voltage line conditioners are devices used to regulate and stabilize the voltage supplied to electrical or electronic equipment. They are commonly used in conjunction with Uninterruptible Power Supplies (UPS), computer accessories and peripherals, and other sensitive electronic devices to ensure that they receive a consistent and clean power supply.
Here are some key points about voltage line conditioners:
Voltage Regulation: Voltage line conditioners are designed to maintain a constant voltage level within a specific range, typically around 120V or 230V, depending on the region. They do this by automatically adjusting the voltage as needed to compensate for fluctuations in the input power.
Voltage Protection: These devices protect sensitive equipment from voltage spikes and surges, which can occur due to lightning strikes, power grid issues, or other electrical disturbances. Voltage line conditioners can suppress these spikes and ensure that the equipment receives a steady voltage.
Noise Filtering: They also incorporate noise filtering capabilities to remove electrical noise and interference from the power supply. This can be essential for maintaining the performance and reliability of sensitive electronics.
Voltage Sag Mitigation: Voltage line conditioners can help mitigate voltage sags or drops that can occur during brownouts or power fluctuations. They can boost the voltage to keep it within the acceptable range for connected devices.
Compatibility: Voltage line conditioners are often used in tandem with UPS systems. While UPS systems provide backup power in case of outages, voltage line conditioners focus on maintaining the quality of the power supply, ensuring that the connected equipment operates without disruptions.
Applications: Voltage line conditioners are used in various applications, including data centers, medical facilities, industrial settings, and any environment where a stable and clean power supply is critical to the operation of electronic equipment.
Types: There are different types of voltage line conditioners, including automatic voltage regulators (AVRs) and ferroresonant transformers. AVRs are more common and use electronic circuitry to regulate voltage, while ferroresonant transformers use magnetic components for voltage regulation.
In summary, voltage line conditioners play a crucial role in maintaining the quality and stability of the power supply to sensitive electronic equipment. They help protect against voltage fluctuations, spikes, and electrical noise, ensuring that computers, peripherals, and other electronic devices operate reliably. When combined with UPS systems, they provide comprehensive power protection for critical systems.

User questions & answers
Question: | if you turn it off does it still protect your equipment |
Answer: | If you turn it off, than your equipment is off as well, meaning nothing bad shall happened to it. But it does not protect from earthquake, even when LCR2400 is ON. Seriously, it is a great peace for clean power, when it is ON! |
Question: | will this eliminate noise/humming on tv's that are powered by modified sine wave inverters |
Answer: | I am not certain. We use a type of inverter, a UPS -- ahead of the Tripp-Lite box, and during power failures I have not heard noise in our equipment. But we are not using this with a TV, our use runs a radio studio and all the equipment in it. |
Question: | how loud is the hum? Would felt dampen the hum or is it fan noise? Does it interfere with the very quiet or silent parts of classical music |
Answer: | I use it for guitar amps in live situations and I have no noise issues. A friend of mine bought one at my recommendation for his studio and his had a loud hum/buzz. We tested them side by side. His was noisy, mine was quiet. He returned his and went with something else. I've been using mine regularly for 11 years. Never play a gig without it. Very happy. |
Question: | can I plug this into a UPS |
Answer: | Yes you can. The way I have it is Outlet to Tripp Lite to APC UPS to Monster Power Conditioner to Audio Visual Systems. You can have it setup from Outlet to UPS to Tripp Lite. The reason I have it the other way around is due to UPS system can maintain a constant 120V AC when you loose power. There is no need to maintain constant 120V AC and filtration system from the Tripp Lite when power is lost. The UPS is off the dirty power grid and producing a constant and clean 120V AC power via Batteries by converting DC to AC (Inverter). Hope this helps. |

User questions & answers
Question: | what is the let through rating on this surge protector |
Answer: | Electrical Rating: 15A, 1800 Watt; Voltage protection rating L-N 400V, L-G 400V, N-G 400V. Type 3 SPD. I like it because of the extra long cord! |
Question: | Anyone know what amount of current will pop the breaker on this? I assume 15 amps can't seem to confirm that |
Answer: | I have tested it with a 600 Watts Oster Blender and a Bosch driller at the same time, because I had to cut the power plug, for use a Neutrik NAC3FC-HC PowerCon, and it doesn't pop, or be hot, It is made to be reliable so it was made like a main power strip, I also connect it a 1600w vacuum cleaner and not a problem |
Question: | What are it's electronic specs (i.e. clamping voltage, energy dissipation, and response time)? I'm looking for something for musical equipment |
Answer: | Clamping Voltage = 400V. Surge Rating = 540 joules. Response Time = n/a. (Strangely, the response time is not available on the product website. I don't know if it means that it's a problem.) I would look elsewhere. There are a lot of other surge protectors that sell for less and provide better protection. It has a normal clamping voltage but its surge rating is low. So, it's going to stop working much earlier than other surge protectors. And, it's not like this really smooths out the line noise as it filters out only 20db (which is much lower than other devices). Frankly, I don't know why people would buy this, especially at this price ($30) and why it has a high rating. I guess the unit looks sturdy and looks like a heavy duty piece of equipment but it really isn't. The company is tricking you. |
Question: | Is this a surge protector or just a power strip? Not used to buying something without a Joules rating. Help! Need for my whole TV setup |
Answer: | It provides 540 Joules protection as well as EMI and RFI protection.. Furman is one of the best names in power conditioning for MUSICAL equipment. That should definitely be considered. I’ve used this brand for decades with zero problems. I’m currently using an M8lx conditioner and one of these branching off of it for added protection of a Gibson guitar/Marshall amp setup with numerous add-on equipment (pedals/PA amps etc.) |

User questions & answers
Question: | Will this eliminate torroidal transformer hum in an audio amp that may be caused by dc in the line? If not, what |
Answer: | No. The LCnn00 will only condition VOLTAGE level (increase/decrease) over a nominal level. To reduce line NOISE you should look for the "Isolation Transformer-Based Power Conditioner - Superior line noise reduction and spike suppression" models (IS250 as an example). Be sure to get the capacity required for your needs. |
Question: | I'm trying to find a good AVR for room heaters (portable ceramic & quartz). Would this work or just shutdown (like the OptiUPS |
Answer: | David, This is not a true AVR in my opinion, it is a step voltage device that boosts the power by way of transformers that are dependent on the voltage it's getting from the wall. I had a customer with intermittently low voltage and it does not regulate to steady voltage. You can't expect this device to provide constant voltage if your drawing higher than expected amps on the circuit. If your UPS is shutting down, your probably pulling to much power for that device and a AVR will not resolve that. You didn't mention what your total wattage draw was or what the amp rating on the circuit your using or if you have a low voltage condition and all of these things figure in to your situation. I ended up getting a true AVR (low AC voltage to DC to Stable AC again at a constant 120 volts) Triplight I think it was and all that really does is provide constant, clean 120 volts AC. So don't know if this is really what you need. |
Question: | Will it smooth out square waves |
Answer: | The LC1800 is designed to provide surge protection and provide a steady 120 vac power to connected equipment. It is not designed to smooth out square waves. We have other products in our offering however that may be a better fit for your application. For additional information please reach out to our presales applications team at 773-869-1773 or [email protected] |
Question: | will this work with 3500 watt portable generator |
Answer: | Yes, it will work as the wattage size of the generator does not matter. You are just limited by the amount of wattage you plug into the Tripp Lite unit. For the LC1200 you should not exceed 1200 watts. Just add up the wattage of each item you plug into it and keep it under 1200 watts. If your item only displays amps then take that number and multiply it by the voltage which is 120v. Ohms law, amps x voltage = watts. |

Question: | Does this utilize an autoformer to correct under/over voltage |
Answer: | This is what I see in the specifications: "Corrects undervoltages as low as 85V and overvoltages up to 147V. Boosts input voltages below 102V by 13.4%. Reduces input voltages above 130V by 10.4%. SURGE SUPPRESSION: 720 joules of network-grade surge suppression protects against potentially harmful power surges and spikes." I personally don't have the equipment to verify this actually works - I presume it does. |
Question: | Need to plug it into a surge protector |
Answer: | According to Tripp Lite it provides 720 joules of surge protection, so the short answer is no. The long answer would involve knowing if or how often power surges exceed that figure. I don't know the answer to that or even if a power company would know or divulge that information (for fear of being sued), but it's important to remember no surge protector will protect against lightning strikes. |

Question: | Where is this made |
Answer: | China |
Question: | Link to a bnc 12vdc led for this? all i can find are ac or 3pin |
Answer: | Search Amazon for bnc gooseneck led light. Also be aware this unit is designed to have power applied to it continuously. If there's a power failure or you unplug it and the power returns , all the relay outputs turn on at once, same as plugging all your equipment in at once. Defeats the purpose in my opinion. I took it apart and rewired the 24v to the relays to a separate switch to give the internal processor time to reset. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Does the unit balance the power within particular ranges? For example, would it add voltage during Brownouts? If not recommendations welcome |
Answer: | I think you need to look at high quality UPS especially one that can rectify voltage/current or go to battery for outage. I bought a CyberPower CP1500PFCLCD PFC Sinewave UPS System recently and it's working flawlessly. Although for high-end audio you may want a Furman P-1800 PFR as power regulator. I actually use both in series and place my high-end audio equipment behind the P-1800 PFR. |
Question: | Will this take the 60 cycle hum out of my home tube amp |
Answer: | Hum has nothing to do with surge suppression. You either have an un-screened signal cable or a ground loop. Try connecting ALL equipment to the SAME outlet. |
Question: | Does this need to be plugged directly into the wall outlet, or can it be plugged into a strip? Can I connect a strip to this unit safely |
Answer: | The warranty is void if the unit is plugged into anything but an outlet. The warranty language does not seem to address plugging strips INTO the unit. See also Dan J's response, above. |
Question: | The prior unit (ac-215) said that its surge protection was "non-sacrificial." this one does not say that. is it |
Answer: | The AC-215A manual says: "Traditional surge suppression circuits sacrifice themselves when exposed to multiple transient voltage spikes, requiring the dismantling of your system and repair of your surge suppressor. Not so with Furman’s SMP. Damaging transient voltages are safely absorbed, clamped, and dissipated. Your connected equipment is protected, while your Furman protects itself!" |

Question: | Hello! ¿does de uniplug fit "nema 6-15R" outlets |
Answer: | The LR2000 includes detachable 6.5 ft. NEMA 6-15P to C13 power cord and can connect up to 6 electronic devices to the rear outlets: 2 NEMA 5-15R, 2 NEMA 6-15R and 2 C13. |
Question: | Can this be used for split phase? two legs of 120? or would I be better off getting two 120 units and share a neutral |
Answer: | This Line Conditioner is inefficient, the accuracy of tension is unprecise, the effect on sound can be unpleasant often preferred without LR2000. My own remains unused, i lended it to a friend, his conclusions are the same. I like very much the Schaffner filter FN352Z 6-06, i obtained good results. For regulating the tension, good results with a (chinese) regulator using a cursor (very precise, about 1%),type Goldsource SVC2000N. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Can it power 220v AC devices |
Answer: | this device has only 120V nominal outputs. the following link will take you to the Pyle website and a link to the actual owners manual that will tell you anything you want to know about the Pyle PS900 https://www.pyleaudio.com/sku/PS900/Power-Supply-Processor-Sequencer---Power-Conditioner-NoiseInterference-Eliminator |
Question: | Can I use this to regulate a regular generator for sensitive electronics |
Answer: | NO! Absolutely NOT ! This is NOT an automatic voltage regulator and this is NOT a 50/60Hz sine wave reconstructions filter. The 2 stage conducted interference filter in this power conditioner removes noise at higher frequencies, typically well over 1000 Hz. If an electronic device is tripping off otherwise misbehaving when supplied from a "regular generator" this is unlikely do anything to change the situation. On the other hand if you have a modern generator you don't need to add anything. A classic "regular generator" from the design most commonly used before 1985 is an alternator that regulates its AC output using electromagnetic feedback from the AC load current in the main stator winding to boost the exciter winding that drives the alternator's rotating exciter coil through a DC rectifier, the inductance of the exciter coil is the only DC filter, hence the superimposed harmonic ripple. This type of generator has poor voltage regulation especially for capacitive (electronic power supply) loads, briefly sags/surges with changes in the load. This type of alternator produces a sine wave with smaller superimposed harmonic sine wave the harmonic determined by the number of poles in the stator's exciter drive. Since roughly 1985 a "regular generator" doesn't have electromagnetic feedback for the exciter supply and adds an electronic regulator to the rectified DC from the exciter winding output to regulate the 60Hz AC output. The regulated DC drive for the exciter coil filters out the exciter drive harmonic and the main output is a clean sine wave at the rotating speed of the machine, typically 3600 RPM for 60 Hz in North America. Electronically regulated "regular generators" don't have any voltage sag or surge unless the machine is grossly overloaded. The prime mover (internal combustion engine) is frequency regulated not phase locked, which means that it doesn't respond instantly to large load changes and the rotating machine so briefly slow down and speed up causing the AC line *frequency* to wobble, down when load suddenly increases, up when load suddenly decreases. Electronic power supplied simply rectify the AC line and are insensitive to small frequency deviations. It isn't practical to update generator with the older non-electronic regulation by adding electronic regulation, which is to say it can be done but the cost of the required expertise to do it is a multiple of the cost of replacing a residential machine. So - unless you have a very old design generator, you don't need to do anything to regulate the power. If you have an old design generator, the best choice is probably to replace the generator, an electronic AVR (automatic voltage regulator) can regulate the voltage but it won't clean up the sine wave, its just an elecronically tap changing transformer, while a ferro-magentic resonant transformer, aka a Sola transformer, will remove power spikes, regulate voltage, filter harmonics and even hold up the load during single cycle line power drop outs, but its not widely marketed to consumers, and the simplest designs have an audible buzz. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Is there a reason to decide between this and a voltage regulator if you were to get only one to protect a system? Brownouts and surges a problem |
Answer: | I would get the Voltage regulator in that case. I have measured voltage swings from 113-138 and the regulator does a great job keepingg voltage out very stable. |
Question: | This says "when installed with the it-reference 15i or 20i..." does one plug into the other, or do they serve different components |
Answer: | I plug the voltage regulator into the IT Reference 20 and use it to power my voltage sensitive components. Such as my processor, projector, DVD player. I plug other components, ie amps, sub amp etc into the IT Reference 20 that are not so sensitive to voltage swings. That works very well for me. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Is the power cable a flat plug |
Answer: | Mine is the same sort of flat, angled 3 prong plug that H. Gajjar, Scott C. and Christian Moreland have. |
Question: | Anyone using this for high end headphone amps and dacs? Thoughts |
Answer: | I am using this with a system of individual components: amp, preamp, CD player, tuner, turntable, DAC, and wifi receiver. I've had it about two years and it works flawlessly, but what I like best is that it sequences start-up and shut down so I always get everything in the order that protects the equipment. Plus it does offer spike protection. I'm not sure what you mean by high end, but my system cost ~$10000 without adding speakers. In short, I'd buy the G5BLK again. |
Question: | Is this a good unit to protect home theaters, flat panel tv 80"? Does it condition and protect surges |
Answer: | I purchased this unit for my home theater system and, yes, it will protect connected equipment against power spikes/surges up to 3400 joules of energy and also provides filtering/isolation to reduce audio/video noise. 3 of the 9 outlets are always on, which is ideal for connecting networking devices like cable modems, wireless routers and network switches. The other 6 outlets can be turned on and off using the main power switch on the front. We turn ours off at night to reduce "vampire" power draw when the home theater components are not being used. When the power button is pushed the outlets are automatically powered on (or off) in sequence to reduce power spikes cause by in-rush currents when multiple devices turn on or off at the same time. Note that you need to hold the power button a couple of seconds for it to turn off, so an accidental quick push doesn't do it. It also has a convenient outlet on the front. It's a bit expensive, but worth it to protect your even more expensive home theater equipment. Hope this helps. |
Question: | Does this come with the rack mounts - they are not pictured |
Answer: | Yes, it comes with rack mount brackets, and feet. You can see a picture of the rack attachment brackets on the APC web site at http://www.apc.com/shop/us/en/products/APC-AV-15-Amp-G-Type-Rack-Power-Filter-120V/P-G5BLK. The product installation manual is also available at the same site and also shows the brackets. I bought this unit a few years ago and just checked the original box, since I didn't use them, and the were not there, but the box does say they are included. So, my confidence is high that brackets are included. |
