12 best ssd with hard drives
SSD (Solid-State Drive) with hard drives, often referred to as hybrid drives or SSHDs (Solid-State Hybrid Drives), combine the advantages of both SSDs and traditional HDDs (Hard Disk Drives) in a single storage solution. Here's what you should know about SSDs with hard drives:
Dual Storage Technologies: SSDs with hard drives essentially consist of two types of storage within a single device. They have a smaller SSD portion (typically 8GB to 128GB) and a larger HDD portion (usually 500GB to 2TB or more).
Faster Boot Times: The SSD portion of the hybrid drive is used to store the operating system and frequently accessed files. This results in faster boot times and quicker access to commonly used applications and data compared to a traditional HDD.
Large Storage Capacity: The HDD component of the hybrid drive offers a larger storage capacity for less frequently accessed files, media, and data. This combination allows you to store a significant amount of data while still benefiting from the speed of an SSD for key tasks.
Automatic Data Management: Hybrid drives typically have built-in algorithms that automatically determine which data should be stored on the SSD portion for quick access and which can be relegated to the HDD portion for long-term storage.
Cost-Effective: SSDs are faster but more expensive per gigabyte compared to HDDs. Hybrid drives offer a cost-effective compromise between speed and capacity, making them a popular choice for laptops and desktops.
Performance Boost: While not as fast as a standalone SSD, hybrid drives offer a noticeable performance boost compared to traditional HDDs.This is especially beneficial for tasks like booting up your operating system, launching applications, and opening frequently used files.
Compatibility: Hybrid drives are generally compatible with most systems that support standard 2.5-inch or 3.5-inch hard drives. They can be used as direct replacements for traditional HDDs.
Battery Life: In laptops, hybrid drives can help extend battery life compared to using a pure SSD, as they use less power for data access.
Data Backup: As with any storage solution, it's important to have a backup strategy in place, as data can still be lost if the drive fails. Regular backups are essential to protect your data.
Choosing the Right Capacity: When selecting an SSD with a hard drive, consider your storage needs. If you require faster performance for tasks like gaming and video editing, opt for a larger SSD portion. If you need more storage for media and documents, choose a hybrid drive with a larger HDD capacity.
SSDs with hard drives offer a good balance between speed and storage capacity, making them a practical choice for users who want improved performance without sacrificing storage space. They are commonly found in laptops and desktop computers where performance and capacity are both important factors.

User questions & answers
Question: | How do you format this and why is that necessary for new drives? What stops me from plugging it right into my system and getting started |
Answer: | Depends on what you're doing. You can connect this to your system but new drives will not be functional until you initialize them and create a partition under Disk Management. Your other option (what I did with this drive) is to disconnect your existing drive and then install this (while PC is off if that's not obvious). Then you have a blank drive in your system and can boot from an OS disc like Windows 10. A fresh Windows 10 installation will still recognize the drive and be able to initialize it properly as well as create the necessary partitions. Let me know if you have any follow up questions. |
Question: | Hi i have questions how the better samsung evo 970 or wd black 250gb high-performance nvme pcie gen3 8 gb/s m |
Answer: | Reviews have suggested that the two drives are VERY close in performance (nearly within margin of error of tests). The WD Black gen3 devices were the first ones to actually challenge the 960 EVO NVMe drives for dominance of the high-performance consumer grade SSDs. You can't go wrong with either one, as far as I can tell, at least from reviews. They'll provide insignificant differences in speed/performance between the two. Therefore, you should purchase based on price and (if it's important to you) warranty. Note also that the WD drive caps at 1TB in size (vs. 2 TB for the 970 EVO), so if you wanted to go that route, there's only one choice. As far as "best high-performance consumer level" NVMe drive, the 970 EVO and the 3rd generation WD black are on an even playing field, and both at the top of the stack (this ignores the "prosumer" market devices like the 970 Pro where prices are much higher per gigabyte). Note that it's possible that you won't notice any performance difference between these high-performance NVMe drives and, say, a high-quality SATA drive. |
Question: | I want the 2 TB, is it possible |
Answer: | If you find someone with TB, you can have as much of it as you want! |
Question: | Whats the difference between this one and the 960 pro |
Answer: | The 960 Pro is from the previous generation. The newer one is the 970 Pro. Comparing the 960 Pro to the newer 970 EVO is a bit difficult because they aren't in the same class. The Primary difference between the Pro and the EVO is the Pro uses MLC (Multi Level Cell) whereas the EVO uses a Triple Level Cell. Case and point with the EVO. You can get a 2tb EVO drive but the Pro tops out at 1tb. The silicon is able to get more storage space for the real estate with TLC. On the other hand MLC is more reliable and more hearty than TLC which is why the Pro is using the MLC. Maybe you want to know about write endurance. One thing to keep in mind about write endurance is you will probably never come close to hitting it's limits unless you are using the drive all the time to save and load large files like a professional would. Also, the write endurance of the 1tb 970 Pro is double the write endurance of the 512gb 970 Pro. hardware review sites and done tests of the actual write cycle longevity of these drives and these drives last longer than what they're rated for. More than likely in your case, these drives will be long obsolete by the time they're half worn out. The write endurance of the 500gb 970 EVO is 300TB write cycles. Sequential R/W of the 970 EVO is 3400MB/s read and 2300MB/s write. I believe the 970 evo uses a Single Level Cell cache to boost write speeds. The write endurance of the 512gb 960 Pro is 400TB/wc. Sequential R/W of the 960 Pro is 3500MB/s read and 2100MB/s write The 970 series is more refined. Both use the updated Phoenix controller whereas the 960 series uses the Polaris controller. Both the 960 Pro and 970 EVO have a 5 year warranty. The older 960 EVO only has a 3 year warranty. The answer to this question between the 960 Pro and 970 Evo is simple........... get whichever is cheaper. |

User questions & answers
Question: | My pc has a i7 8700k with 16 gigs of ram with a nvidia 2080 graphics card and already has one of these 1 tb ssd in it. Cab I install 1 more |
Answer: | Almost certainly yes: you may need to purchase a cable to connect it to the sata port on the motherboard, and go into the bios to update the settings and ensure your primary drive remains the boot drive |
Question: | Does this come with free cloning software |
Answer: | I think so (on their website), but you seriously shouldn't be purchasing any WD Green storage options anyway. Sequential write speeds on them are famously low. I just got a new Samsung 970 Evo drive and it's literally 10x faster than this Green SSD. |
Question: | What's the difference between this an a wd blue ssd? furthermore, would this be ideal as a boot drive on a desktop pc |
Answer: | Performance and longevity, the Blue is faster than the green and has a higher endurance rating (lasts longer). WD Green is essentially the economy line, which tends to also use less power, thus being an ECO line. I wouldn't recommend the green line unless web-browsing and office is the extent of your computer usage. The Blue has 5 times the endurance rating, 400TBW vs 80TBW, which is enough of a difference alone, for me. |
Question: | What's the difference between this an a wd blue ssd? furthermore, would this be ideal as a boot drive on a desktop pc |
Answer: | All the negatives of a WD green HDD, brought to you in SSD form! But you are saving $11 ☹️ |

User questions & answers
Question: | Can this device clone a larger drive to a smaller drive (say a 512gb to a 256gb) as long as the smaller drive has enough room to hold the data |
Answer: | The target drive *must* be equal or larger. If the drive is larger, you'll need to expand the partition in the operating system after cloning. |
Question: | Can this also be used to erase/wipe drives |
Answer: | The seller's answer is misleading without context. Yes, technically it CAN be used to erase/wipe drives, but that is not a native feature to this device. It is a cloner/dock, so you can use the dock functionality to connect to a PC and from there use a third party application to erase the drive. Seller should have specified, but it seems to me (I am a tad cynical by nature) that the seller purposefully didn't in order to increase interest in the product. Boo to you seller. Boo. |
Question: | will a samsung drive be seen as a samsung drive with this unit |
Answer: | Hi friend. Our Acasis nvme enclosure identification is to identify the name of our hard drive box and will not display the name of the hard drive |
Question: | Can I use the one with only a single slot(The one that cost $40) for cloning |
Answer: | Hi friend. Thank you for your questions. We are sorry to tell you that the single slot just for one NVME SSD's Data transfer and storage. If you want to transfer the A SSD data to the B SSD, you need to go to the clone nvme which has two slot. Thank you and have a good day! |

Question: | Will this drive work with a mid 2012 macbook pro? I haven't seen this model addressed yet. Thanks |
Answer: | Yes. I just installed this drive in my son's mid-2012 13" Macbook Pro (non-retina) and the speed difference is amazing! I would recommend first updating your operating system to Mac OS X High Sierra which also updates the recovery partition on your Mac. When you install your new drive, hold down Option-Command R when powering on to boot into the recovery partition which will then allow you format and install the OS. If you happen to see a message that the Recovery server is not available, you probably just need to set the Macbook clock to the correct time with the command: date mmddhhmmyy. For example: date 0128140018 will set the date to January 28, 2pm, 2018. The date is set through the Terminal app, also available on the Recovery partition. |

Question: | Will the echo 5(latest for 2020) work any better than the echo 5 version that comes with the cloning kit |
Answer: | They share the same software versions. The Cloning Kit package includes a 2.5" SATA-to-USB adapter, which is tested and quality proven to be compatible with the software. -- NTI Customer Service |
Question: | Will this clone server 2016 between 2 sata 3.5 drives |
Answer: | Yes it will, provided that your source drive isn’t configured as RAID or Dynamic Disk. Also, if you connect the 3.5” drives externally, you’ll need a special adapter cable with a power source; otherwise internal SATA connection will be fine. — NTI Customer Service |
Question: | Will this clone from a external usb drive to a new internal sc308 128gb m.2 2280 sata drive |
Answer: | Honestly, I couldn't get it to clone anything, and I'm pretty savvy with this stuff. I was luck to find something to fix what ECHO messed up while trying to clone my drive. |
Question: | How many licenses |
Answer: | Per software licensing laws, each unit is one license good for one PC. You can certainly install multiple times but on the same PC. Also, after installation, you can clone multiple hard drives (or SSDs) by connecting the source drive to the PC. Hope this helps. -- NTI Customer Service Additional Note: It's important to note that the Echo 2019 software can work with any adapter; and the adapter we include can work with any software. This increases your flexibility. Unlike kits of other brands, which actually bind the software and adapter together tightly: they can work only with each other. Please beware of this. |
Product features
Dynamic Resize
With a single click of the mouse Echo will clone your entire hard drive (i.e. Operating System, Programs, Data, Partitions, etc.) to another drive. Dynamic Resize cloning method uses Echo’s smart cloning technology and will automatically resize the original drive’s partitions to fit onto a smaller or larger replacement drive. This is the default and recommended cloning method.
Easy-to-use & Compatible with ALL
- Cloning in 3 easy steps!
- Unlike the competition, the included NTI Echo software is not tied up with the included NTI adapter cable. It works with any cable, and any brand SSD or HDD, 2.5" or 3.5".
- Important Note: The tie-up with cable makes the competition software completely dependent on its cable to function. As a result, you won't be able to use their kit to clone to a 3.5" internal HDD. That is a big limitation!
High-Speed Adapter Cable

User questions & answers
Question: | Can I connect a usb cable to this drive to access what's stored on it via computer or tv? or can you only access stuff through a network connection |
Answer: | if you really want to access via USB, just get a harddrive docking station. They are so much cheaper then networked attached storage anyway, less electronics to fail...just better all the way around unless you are dealing with someone who can't cope with connecting and disconnecting stuff, it's far better. You can sway in and out many drives and store them... |

Question: | Anyone use this successfully as a Plex media server |
Answer: | To clarify, this can absolutely be used as storage for the media you host on a plex server but you will need to run the plex server on another device. Kind of Similar to DC Mike's setup; I have a an old AMD PC that hosts my plex server (Athlon x2 4400+, 8gb DDR2, and Radeon HD 6870 *can't remember if video card helps with plex decoding at all, but it's there anyway and has no other use to me) I do have a couple TB worth of media on HDDs in that box but the majority of my data is on similar NAS devices like this buffalo Linkstation. Literally any USB external or NAS drive can host media for a Plex server with extremely little chance of limited performance. The limiting factor in Plex performance comes with the capability of the computer hosting the server to decode and encode media to play on the device you're trying to stream to (for instance, accessing your plex server from another pc takes much fewer resources than on your ipad would require because the server pc has to reencode the media to a format that iOS can utilize) and, in the case of remote streaming, your internet connection. The 10+ year old pc I described can stream multiple 1080p video remotely with no visible lag and I've tried as much as 7 local network 1080p streams and had not issue there.tl;dr - This can host all of your music, video, pictures for a plex server to access but not run the plex server itself. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Will a Dell PW 2950 with 3.5 inch caddies accept this to create bays for 2.5 inch drives |
Answer: | If you currently have 3.5 inch sata hard drives installed, this will allow you to use a 2.5 inch instead. Its frame and connector are in position to make a 2.5 inch sata drive look exactly like a 3.5 inch drive for both mounting and interfacing to the electrical connector. Therefore, if you are removing a bare, standard 3.5 inch hard drive out of something, you can mount your new 2.5 inch hard drive into this bracket, and install the bracket with the new drive into the exact same position the old drive was previously installed. It has mounting holes and the interface connector in the exact place of a bare 3.5 in hard drive. |
Question: | Hi, I have ordered a CoolerMaster Cosmos II Case that has 2 x 3.5" Hotswap Bays that I want to fit a 2.5" SSD Into. Will these suit |
Answer: | Yes, this adapter is exactly what you need. |
Question: | Hi - can someone tell me what size screws I need to buy to attach my SSD to this adapter? And how many |
Answer: | I bought several of this item and screws were included - 4 of a size which fits the SSD mounting holes, 4 of a larger size which fit the threaded holes in the sides and bottom of the bracket. This item is available from several different vendors. It is actually a surplus Hewlett-Packard part, it is very well made, and I presume the fasteners are included no matter which vendor actually sells it to you ... but that is a presumption on my part. |
Question: | Will this work to install my crucial ssd in the new HP z620 series |
Answer: | I used it to install a Samsung Evo 840 in a z620 and it worked very well. The crucial should have the same mounting and should work. |
